When a man was walking by some elephants, he suddenly stopped. He was confused about how these huge animals were being held only by a small rope tied to their front legs. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could break the rope at any time, but for some reason, they did not.
He saw a trainer nearby and asked why the animals just stood there and didn’t have a try at getting away. “Well,” the trainer said, “when they were very young and much smaller, we used the same rope to keep them from running away. At that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break the rope. They believe it can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”

Amazed by traditional Chinese culture, illustrator (插画师) Wan Yue has found a way to give traditional cultural elements (元素) a modern touch with her ability to make objects into beautiful characters.
Based on Chinese archaeological artifacts (考古文物), she creates beautiful ancient characters. Her cool art invites people to explore the historical stories of these artifacts.
One artwork from her cultural artifact series features a silver incense burner (香炉) with patterns of grapes, flowers and birds. Unearthed in 1970, the relic is now kept at the Shaanxi History Museum in Xi’an. In Wan’s work, a young woman dressed in hanfu is shown to be dancing, with the incense burner flying in the air above her hand.
By drawing on various things related to the artifacts, Wan often lets her imagination lead the way. In this way, the artifact she’s drawing seems to have a “spirit of its own”.
“For each painting, I start off with a draft (草图) based on a simple idea of the character ... I try out different possibilities, and then, step by step, present something that in my mind matches with the character,” Wan told China Daily.
Known as Yuyuqing online, Wan has won more than 2 million followers. “I feel a sense of responsibility and honor to contribute, in my own way, to the spread of traditional culture,” she told China Daily.
9. Which of the following might be one of Wan Yue’s artworks?
A B C D

A. She connects artifacts with modern things.
B. She follows her imagination to draw them.
C. She changes objects into beautiful characters.
D. She learns deeply about artifacts’ backgrounds.
11. What’s the most suitable word to describe Wan’s creative process?
A. relaxed B. hard C. magical D. gradual
12. How does Wan feel about having so many online followers?
A. They help her promote her artwork.

C. She does not deserve so many people’s attention.
D. She feels a need to help spread traditional culture.

On May 2, 2023, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) called on its 11,500 members to begin a strike in Hollywood, California, and New York City in the US. It was the first writers’ strike in more than 15 years and made many movie and TV projects stop.
One big problem was the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The WGA wanted Hollywood’s studios and producers to control the use of AI on creative projects. They wanted AI to not be allowed to write or rewrite material or be used as source material, reported China Daily.
Creative AI programs like ChatGPT can now create human-like written works and art. Companies could use these programs instead of people to create scripts (剧本) for movies and TV shows in the future. The WGA was worried that AI could be used to create scripts based on a previous writer’s work.
Another problem was pay. Warren Leight, an executive producer (执行制作人), said that “What AI could do is put out a garbled (混乱不清的) piece of work ... instead of hiring you to do a first draft, studios hire you to do a second draft, which pays less.” This made writers want to “nip that in the bud”.
AI is already being used widely in other parts of the entertainment industry, such as de-aging actors and removing swear words (脏话) in post-production, said Fortune magazine. Even the WGA and others are open to using AI “less as a creator and more as a tool”, similar to how writers might refer to research material for their work, said tech news website Gizmodo. Still, although AI is not set to replace human writers just yet, the chance could be there in the future.
13. What is the WGA’s opinion on AI?
A. AI does not help much with creative projects.
B. Hollywood should limit its use of AI.
C. AI should only be used on creative projects.
D. Many Hollywood workers lose their jobs due to AI.
14. Warren Leight was worried that _____.
A. AI would create better works than human writers
B. AI cannot write creative works
C. no writers would work with AI
D. the use of AI may influence writers’ pay
15. What does the underlined phrase mean?
A. Writers are happy to see the use of AI.
B. Writers want to stop it from happening.
C. Writers don’t care about it at all.
D. Writers think it’s possible to live with AI.
16. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. AI has been used in entertainment. B. AI is not set to replace human writers.
C. AI will possibly replace all human jobs. D. AI works as a helpful tool for writers.

You’re in your favorite clothing store. You don’t really need to buy anything, but everything is so cheap and fashionable (时髦的)! Before you know it, you leave the store with bags of new clothes.
On the surface, this doesn’t seem so bad. However, there are a lot of hidden costs behind the cheap price put forward by fast fashion brands.
To put it simply, the fashion industry is terrible for the planet. Not only does it use up a lot of resources (资源), but it also heavily pollutes the environment with chemicals (化学品), microplastics (微塑料) and unwanted waste.
Fashion is one of the least sustainable (可持续发展的) industries on the planet, said Michael Stanley-Jones, a program management officer with the United Nations Environment Program.
It doesn’t just take up space at home. It ends up in landfills (垃圾场), too. In fact, three out of every five pieces end up either being burnt or sent to landfills.
However, things are changing. People are now examining their own act of buying and what changes they can make to become sustainable. Shopping secondhand, with its typically lower prices and unique finds, has become a very popular and eco-friendly choice.
The only truly sustainable way to shop is to not shop at all, Rachel Kibbe, a brand consultant (顾问) told Insider, unless you’re buying clothes that already exist.
1. Does Michael Stanley-Jones support the fashion industry?

2. Where do unwanted clothes end up at last?

3. What eco-friendly choice does the passage mention when we shop?
