(2023-2024学年高二下·山东枣庄·期末)Kendall Griffith is a student at Bard College majoring in both the pipa, a four-stringed Chinese lute, and Asian studies. Born and raised in Boston, Griffith started her journey into Chinese culture nine years ago, when she began learning Chinese for its writing system and tones.
While learning Chinese, she was captivated by traditional Chinese music in a drama she was watching. Griffith did some research and discovered that the instrument she was drawn to was the pipa.
“I like the sound of the pipa, especially the techniques that are incorporated with it,” Griffith says, adding that her parents and friends have been very supportive of her learning Chinese traditional music.
Griffith’s father helped her discover the instrument and she found her first pipa teacher, who was part of the Boston Chinese Ensemble. Sometimes, after performances, people would tell her, “I’ve never seen a non-Chinese person play this before. That’s very cool.”
Last semester, Griffith studied at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Learning the pipa in the city, where “Chinese music is happening”, Griffith felt pushed beyond her comfort zone and learned more about her passion.
“There was an interesting lecture that talked about how most Chinese music emulates things in calligraphy. There’s a lot of empty space, and I can now incorporate that feeling into a lot of the music I play,” she says.
“Chinese music also emulates nature in a way. The sound it makes can resemble a horse; you can visualize it. There are many techniques not seen in Western instruments, such as bending the strings or using your five fingers to create a tremolo. I enjoy telling my friends about it,” she says. Griffith’s friends, who were amazed by her impressions, started attending more Chinese music concerts, wanting to learn more.
Diving into another culture through music makes Griffith value the culture more. She said, “When you learn about a different type of music, it makes you appreciate the culture more. It makes you realize how important it is to be open-minded. I feel more open-minded about why things are the way they are.”
4. How did Griffith begin to learn the pipa?
A. Inspired by her Asian studies. B. Influenced by her friends.
C. Attracted by its unique sound. D. Encouraged by her father.
5. What do some people think of Griffith’s pipa playing?
A. Amazing. B. Odd. C. Shocking. D. Curious.
6. Why does Griffith mention the calligraphy in Paragraph 6?
A. To explain the Chinese writing system. B. To display its link with Chinese music.
C. To show different forms of Chinese arts. D. To explore the origin of Chinese music.
7. What benefit does Griffith get from learning Chinese music?
A. It has promoted her Chinese learning. B. It makes her abandon western music.
C. It has developed her critical thinking. D. It makes her love Chinese culture more.
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. B 7. D

(2023-2024学年高二下·重庆渝中·期末)Some songs might speak to your soul even if you don't know the words. The almost magical way that music reflects and influences our emotions led American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to declare it the “universal language of mankind”. But how universal is it really?
A team of more than a dozen researchers and countless undergraduates set out to collect and interpret descriptions and recordings of musical performances around the world. Their first finding: Music is indeed universal. Or at least statistical modeling strongly suggests that more than 99% of societies have music. Then, they analyzed the song descriptions for sixty very different societies and looked at different qualities related to song performance.
As they classified the songs, they found that three dimensions(方面) accounted for more than a quarter of the variability between songs. The first was how formal or informal a song was. Songs high in formality had large audiences and lots of instruments, often involved ceremonial events, and frequently had adult-only audiences. Informal events had smaller audiences, including children, or no audience at all. The second was how arousing a song was to its listeners. Lively events involving lots of dancing were high on this dimension, while a low value reflected a calmer event, like someone singing to themselves or a baby. The last was how religious song was. Songs used in ceremonies were high in religiosity, while those without a spiritual context scored low.
The researchers applied their findings to four widespread categories of music: lullabies(摇篮), dance songs, love songs and healing songs, and found clear trend. Most dance was highly arousing and formal, but low in religiosity. Lullabies were mostly low in formality and low in arousal. And healing songs scored high in all dimensions while love songs were low in all dimensions. Even more interesting, the distribution of these behaviors was similar in all societies studied.
Scholars say that their database could fuel future research into even more inspiring questions about music universals. And their method might be used to pick out patterns in other hard-to-analyze fields, like storytelling or visual art.
8. How was the research conducted?
A. By making comparison and contrast. B. By finding similarities.
C. By collecting and analyzing data. D. By illustrating examples.
9. Which kind of music may involve the most audiences and instruments?
A. Lullabies. B. Dance songs. C. Love songs. D. Healing songs.
10. How is the future of their research findings according to the scholars?
A. Promising. B. Unpredictable. C. Impractical. D. Limited.
11. What can be concluded from the passage?
A. Songs can speak to your soul only if you know their words.
B. Differences in formality lead to the variability between songs.
C. Music is classified by the number of audience and instruments.
D. Research on the universals of music can help explore other fields.

(2023-2024高二下·湖南郴州·期末)In the past decades, songs have been “losing weight”. From 1990 to 2020 or so, the average duration of the top 100 popular songs reduced from over four minutes to about three minutes, reported The Washington Post. In the summer of 2023, Super Shy, a K-pop song by New Jeans, swept TikTok with its uncommonly short duration— two minutes and 34seconds.
What has caused this change? The widespread use of TikTok and streaming music media might be the top triggers. It is no exaggeration that these two influences have changed the way hit songs are made and publicized, as well as the way we find music, noted Billboard.
On streaming platforms like Spotify, artists only get paid when their songs are played for 30 seconds or more. The often-skipped songs will be less likely to be recommended by the platform. Therefore, artists try to get their songs played longer to enhance their earnings and visibility(关注度).
According to research, 25 percent of listeners will skip the song they are listening to in the first five seconds. One theory holds that a concise(简洁的) track is more likely to get more listens. “There’s a charm to a short song because the person hits repeat —play it again, play it again,” Mitch Allan, a longtime writer-producer, told Billboard.
On TikTok, however, users prefer even simpler versions of these short songs —snippets(片段). “To a lot of people, I think the snippet they encounter on TikTok is the song. They rarely have the interest in getting the full picture of the song, not to mention the background or the inspiration behind the song. ” said vocal producer Bart Schoudel to Billboard.
This series of changes has also reshaped songwriting. The Guardian reported that research has found lyrics of pop songs are becoming simpler and angrier than ever.
For many, lyrics are a form of literature, weaving imagery and emotion into their content. US songwriter Bob Dylan was even awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his lyrics in 2016. With all these changes, will lyrics still be regarded as literature in the future?
12. What is the main reason for the songs to “lose weight”?
A. People have no time to listen to long songs.
B. Short songs are easier for listeners to understand.
C. Many people have been losing weight nowadays.
D. The TikTok and streaming music media are widely used.
13. Which song is more likely to get more listens according to the passage?
A. A song which is simple and short. B. A song sung by a pop singer.
C. A song often skipped by users. D. A high-quality song.
14. What is Bart Schoudel’s attitude to the snippets on TikTok?
A. Supportive. B. Interested. C. Negative. D. Indifferent.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Will Lyrics Be Regarded as Literature?
B. Will Music Become Shorter and Shorter?
C. The Wide Spread of Streaming Music
D. Pop Songs “Lose Weight” Facing Streaming Media
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. D
【语篇导读】这是一篇新闻报道。文章主要探讨了近年来流行歌曲时长缩短的趋势及其原因,主要归因于TikTok和流媒体平台的影响。
12. 细节理解题。根据第二段的“What has caused this change? The widespread use of TikTok and streaming music media might be the top triggers.(是什么导致了这种变化?TikTok和流媒体音乐的广泛使用可能是最主要的诱因。)”可知,歌曲“减肥”的主要原因是TikTok和流媒体音乐被广泛使用。故选D。
13. 推理判断题。根据第三段的“According to research, 25 percent of listeners will skip the song they are listening to in the first five seconds. One theory holds that a concise track is more likely to get more listens. “There’s a charm to a short song because the person hits repeat—play it again, play it again, ” Mitch Allan, a longtime writer-producer, told Billboard.(根据研究,25%的听众会在头五秒跳过他们正在听的歌。一种理论认为,简洁的曲目更有可能获得更多的听众。“一首短歌有一种魅力,因为人们会重复播放,再播放,再播放,”资深作家兼制作人米奇·艾伦在接受《公告牌》杂志采访时表示。) ”和第四段的“On TikTok, however, users prefer even simpler versions of these short songs —snippets.(然而,在TikTok上,用户更喜欢这些短歌曲的更简单版本——片段。)”可知,一首简单而简短的歌更有可能得到更多的倾听。故选A。
14. 推理判断题。根据第五段的“On TikTok, however, users prefer even simpler versions of these short songs—snippets. “To a lot of people, I think the snippet they encounter on TikTok is the song. They rarely have the interest in getting the full picture of the song, not to mention the background or the inspiration behind the song. ” said vocal producer Bart Schoudel to Billboard.(然而,在TikTok上,用户更喜欢这些短歌曲的更简单版本——片段。

Firstly, you have to decide which song you are going to sing. I would recommend nursery rhymes. Moreover, what you have to do is remember the lyrics by heart. Singing without referring to notes will give you an advantage over other competitors. Lastly, you had better practice singing every day.

(2023-2024学年高二下·河南南阳·阶段练习)When I first moved to the south of America in the summer holiday before middle school, I realized that I was stepping into a completely different world. New Orleans, Louisiana, was unlike any place I had ever been to. In the French Quarter, tourists walked around all year with long skinny cups in their hands, and there was a popular game going on the streets which were crowded with cars but had few people. What surprised me more than anything, though, was the constant friendliness and compassion of the people of New Orleans.
“What can I get for you, sugar?” a waitress about my age asked me on my first day in New Orleans.
I was taken aback. The waitress did not even know me, but she treated me like family. She smiled down at me as I pointed to an item on the menu.
“Is the pasta good?” I asked her.
“It’s not my favorite,” she admitted with a smile. “But I’m more of a girl who prefers rice!” She shrugged, letting out a loud laughter.
I looked at her in shock. What was I supposed to say to that? I couldn’t believe that the waitress had just prevented me from ordering something. Actually, she had given me her honest opinion, as if we were best friends. She even told me her name—Mary. She even told me that she just worked as a part-time waitress and that she would be a high school student soon.
After a few days in New Orleans, I got used to kind reminders and polite greetings. I also realized how comforting it was to be treated like I belong wherever I went.
As soon as I settled into my new high school, I adapted myself to the school life. I was drawn to the lively music scene that New Orleans was famous for. I was a trumpet (小号) player, and I wanted to join the school music club. However, I was afraid that I was too poor in music to be qualified for the school music club.

【答案】
One afternoon, I was surprised to see a group of students including Mary practicing jazz in the school playground. The vibrant notes of trumpets, saxophones, and drums intermingled under the warm sun, creating a harmonious symphony that echoed throughout the campus. Mary, her fingers dancing across the valves of her trumpet, noticed me watching from afar and beckoned me over with an inviting smile. “You play, don't you? Come join us!” she shouted above the music, her eyes sparkling with genuine enthusiasm. My heart raced; this was the chance I had secretly hoped for, yet my insecurities held me back.
Finally, with Mary’s encouragement, my hesitation slowly melted away. I gathered my courage and approached the ensemble, trumpet in hand. The group warmly welcomed me, their acceptance dispelling my fears. Under Mary’s patient guidance, I began to find my rhythm within the ensemble. Our practices became a haven where mistakes transformed into learning opportunities, and every note played strengthened my confidence. Through this experience, I learned that sometimes, it takes a little push from a friend to realize one’s potential and truly belong.

Make More Time for Music
Are you one of those people who loves listening to music? Do you listen to it whenever you can? If so, you’re doing something good for your mind and body. 16 It just might make you happier, healthier, and it could even make you a better student.
Music can make you smile, sing along, or get up and dance. These experiences are proof of music’s power. In fact, scientists believe that music makes people happier. Valorie N.
