Paying off student loans (贷款) can be challenging and stressful. It may mean starting out one’s life with debt. This is exactly what college basketball star Anthony Leal did not want for his beloved sister.
Anthony Leal, smart and athletic, is a business major at Indiana University and plays as a point guard for the Indiana Hoosiers. When he found out that his sister had a huge amount to pay in student loans, he thought of taking advantage of the benefits he could get from playing basketball. In 2021, NCAA allowed college athletes like Leal to earn promotional money through photograph signing, social media interactions, advertising campaigns, and even teaching camps and lessons. Thanks to it, Leal was able to save money and helped take off the burden on his sister’s shoulders.
On Christmas day, he surprised his sister Lauren by letting her know what he’s been up to in the past two years. Lauren was very emotional after reading her brother’s heartwarming note. “There is no doubt that I have made it to where I am today because of you,” Leal wrote. “Someone like you deserves no burdens or restrictions in life, and I feel that the best way to help with that is by paying off your student loan debt.” Besides looking back on several precious moments in their childhood, Leal also mentioned in the note that he didn’t expect his sister to pay back the money. Instead, he hoped she would pay it forward.
Lauren was grateful for her brother’s huge efforts to pay off her student loans. “After those things were done, I was going to sit down and get a settled plan,” said Lauren. “I can go full steam ahead in my future and what I want to accomplish, what I want to do, without having that just weighing me down and holding me back. So it’s just incredible,” she said.
4. How did Leal help his sister pay off the loans?
A. By winning scholarships.
B. By turning to his team.
C. By joining in commercial activities.
D. By reducing daily expenses.
5. What did Leal expect Lauren to do?
A. To enjoy absolute freedom. B. To realize childhood dreams.
C. To show kindness to others. D. To pay back the money later.
6. How did Lauren feel with her debts paid off?
A. Hopeful and concerned. B. Free and excited.
C. Relieved but nervous. D. Pleased but anxious.
7. What’s the best title of the text?
A. A Surprising Christmas Gift B. A Targeted Student Loan
C. A Challenging University Life D. A Talented Basketball player

Many people dream of going into space, but until recently only professional astronauts had that privilege. That all changed in 2022, with successful first missions for several space tourism companies.
First off the runway, in early July, was Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic company. Its spaceship, called VSS Unity, took four passengers and two pilots on a trip to the edge of space, where they experienced weightlessness and saw the Earth from above.
Unity has a fully reusable design--it is carried to a height of 9. 5 miles under a larger “mothership” plane called Eve. It is then released before firing its own rockets to reach its maximum height of 53 miles. As it begins to fall, its wings turn around so that it floats down slowly like a shuttlecock (羽毛球), before levelling out and flying back to land like a normal aeroplane. Virgin Galactic hopes to begin regular flights in 2023.
Less than two weeks later, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s New Shepard rocket made its first flight, launching a space capsule with four passengers to an altitude of 66 miles. Among those on board were Bezos himself and 82-year-old Wally Funk, a pioneering female pilot who trained for NASA’s Mercury programme in the early 1960s but had waited 60 years for her chance to go into space. Funk became the oldest person to fly in space but only held that record until October, when 90-year-old actor William Shatner flew on the second New Shepard launch. Shatner played Captain Kirk in the Star Trek TV series and films.
In September, the Inspiration 4 mission carried four ordinary people into orbit around Earth. The launch was the first private passenger flight for Elon Musk’s SpaceX company, using a Dragon spacecraft that is also used for NASA missions. Designed to raise awareness and funds for St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, US, the mission was paid for by billionaire Jared Isaacman. He was joined on the three-day flight by medical researcher Hayley Arceneaux, competition winner Dr Sian Proctor and hospital supporter ChrisSembroski.
8. What can we know about VSS Unity?
A. It can be used several times. B. It has started normal flights.
C. It takes off from the ground. D. It touches down like a shuttlecock.
9. What does “it” refer to in Paragraph3?
A. Eve. B. a shuttlecock. C. an aeroplane. D. Unity.
10. Who is the latest person to go into space according to the passage?
A. Hayley Arceneaux. B. William Shatner. C. Jeff Bezos. D. Wally Funk.
11. Which statement will the author probably agree with?
A. New spacecrafts will weigh increasingly light.
B. Old people are more suitable to have space travel.
C Ordinary people can go into space in the near future.
D. Space travel missions can meet the demand for hospitals.

ChatGPT designed by OpenAI to carry on conversations just like humans, has become a viral excitement. The AI-powered tool went from zero to a million users in just five days! Its ability to provide in-depth answers to user questions has even drawn the attention of distinguished technology companies.
The intelligent robot understands what the user says or types and then responds in a way that makes sense. Its vast body of knowledge has been gathered from the internet and archived books. It is further trained by humans. This makes ChatGPT a useful tool for researching almost any topic.
“We have a lot of information on the internet, but you normally have to Google it, then read it and then do something with it,” says Ricardo, chief science officer and co-founder of AI company Erudit. “Now you’ll have this resource that can process the whole internet and all of the information it contains for you to answer your question.”
ChatGPT cannot think on its own. It depends on the information that it has been trained on. As a result, the AI tool works well for things that have accurate data available. However, when unsure, ChatGPT can get creative and flow out incorrect responses. OpenAI cautions users to check the information no matter how logical it sounds. Also, ChatGPT has only been trained with information till 2021. Hence, it cannot be relied upon for anything that happened after that.
Experts believe ChatGPT has limitless potential to solve real-world problems. It can translate long texts into different languages, create content on almost any topic, and even summarize books.
However, ChatGPT has received mixed reactions from educators. Some believe it could serve as a valuable tool to help build literacy skills in the classroom. It could also be used to teach students difficult science or math concepts. But other educators think ChatGPT will encourage students to cheat. They fear this will prevent them from building critical thinking and problem-solving skills. As a result, many districts are starting to ban its use in schools.
12. What is the unique feature of ChatGPT?
A It has artificial intelligence. B. It can answer users’ questions.
C. It has the largest number of users. D. It can engage in meaningful conversations.
13. What makes ChatGPT helpful to research various topics?
A. Its capability of information processing. B. Its accurate information.
C. Its availability of up-to-date data. D. Its vast body of questions.
14. Why do ChatGPT users have to be cautious when using it?
A. ChatGPT is unable to think itself. B. ChatGPT lacks creativity.
C. ChatGPT offers illogical information. D. ChatGPT is not properly trained.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards ChatGPT?
A. Favorable. B. Disapproving. C. Objective. D. Intolerant.

Paying off student loans (贷款) can be challenging and stressful. It may mean starting out one’s life with debt. This is exactly what college basketball star Anthony Leal did not want for his beloved sister.

Thanks to it, Leal was able to save money and helped take off the burden on his sister’s shoulders.
On Christmas day, he surprised his sister Lauren by letting her know what he’s been up to in the past two years.
C. Ordinary people can go into space in the near future.
D. Space travel missions can meet the demand for hospitals.

ChatGPT, designed by OpenAI to carry on conversations just like humans, has become a viral excitement.
However ChatGPT has received mixed reactions from educators.
A. It has artificial intelligence.
