When you want to ask your teacher a question during the math class, what do you do? Do you simply shout (喊) out your question as soon as it comes into your mind? Or do you put up your hand and wait until the teacher calls your name?
If you put up your hand first, it’s maybe because your teacher has a rule (规则) that tells what you should do when you have a question. Can you imagine (想象) what it would be like if everyone could simply talk whenever they want during class?

Some are very important rules, they are known as laws and braking them can have bad consequences (后果), such as going to jail (监狱) or paying a fine.
When you learn to drive, you’ll understand how many rules you should follow when driving on the road. The rules for driving have a common goal (共同目标): keeping you safe. If you make a list of the rules you follow each day, you can quickly understand how many of them exist (存在) to keep you safe and make your life more enjoyable. Nine year old Kason has cerebral palsy (脑瘫痪). He can’t walk well and he has to use a wheelchair (轮椅). One day, he and his grandmother stopped at a playground and Kason was excited. The playground had swings (秋千) he could easily use. “I loved it.” he said. There wasn’t a playground with the same kind of equipment (设备) near his home. He wanted to build a playground so that all kids could play together in his town.
In 2022, Kason spoke to local leaders. He told them about the need for the new playground. Nick Farline is a leader in this place and he loved Kason’s idea. “He’s got something here,” Farline said, “We need to listen and take it seriously (认真对待).”
After that, Farline and other people held meetings to study the playground. They asked Kason to take part in the meetings. He shared (分享) ideas on how to build the new playground. “It was so great.” Farline said. When it came time to name the playground, they named it Kason’s Komer to praise Kason’s great idea.
Kason’s Komer opened on November 7th. There is a merry-go-round (旋转木马) that can fit wheelchairs there. There’s also a play center that kids can explore (探索) through touch and sound. The playground is covered with playground grass and kids can move their wheelchairs on it.

The blue whale (鲸) is the largest animal in the world. Most grow 80 feet (25 meters). Some reach 100 feet (30 meters). That’s as long as three school buses. Adult blue whales can weigh over 150 tons (吨). That’s as much as 30 African elephants. And a blue whale’s heart is the size of a small car! Some blue whales stay in the same place all year round. However, most travel fur to colder waters to find food and to warmer waters to have babies. Some travel alone. Others travel in pairs or small groups. They often use calls and songs to communicate with other blue whales hundreds of miles away. Since these whales are so large, you might think they have a lot of teeth. However, blue whales have no teeth!
The blue whale brings water into its mouth and it swallows (吞) small shrimp (虾). Adult blue whales cat up to 8,000 pounds of shrimp every day. A newborn (新生) blue whale is also very large. It is over 20 feet long and weighs 5,000 to 6,000 pounds.
Like many animals, blue whales are now endangered (濒危的). There were 350,000 blue whales swimming in the sea many years ago. Today, there are only 10,000 to 25,000. Now people stop hunting (猎取) blue whales in most places. However, blue whales still face dangers. Millions of tons of plastic (塑料) bags come into the sea every year. Whales, seabirds, and fish swallow them. It is dangerous for these animals. So it is time to do something for the blue whale and other sea animals.
27. What can we know about the blue whale?

When you want to ask your teacher a question during the math class, what do you do? Do you simply shout (喊) out your question as soon as it comes into your mind? Or do you put up your hand and wait until the teacher calls your name?
If you put up your hand first, it’s maybe because your teacher has a rule (规则) that tells what you should do when you have a question. Can you imagine (想象) what it would be like if everyone could simply talk whenever they want during class?
What if everyone could simply get up and do whatever they want to do during class? Do you think much learning would take place? Everyone needs an orderly and peaceful classroom. If there are no rules, the classroom will be chaotic!
You may feel like there are too many rules. After all, you have rules at home. You have rules at school. You have rules in the sports you play and the clubs you take part in. Why do we have to have so many rules? In fact, why do there have to be any rules at all?
To live in a society, we must have rules. Some rules are informal (非正式), your teacher and parents will be angry with you when you break (打破) these rules.
If there are no rules to follow, things could get dangerous.
30. The writer uses the math class as an example to show ______.
A. students should act freely during class B. everyone should keep quiet in the classroom
C. classroom rules help to keep learning in order D. teachers should answer students’ questions in class

33. The writer wants to tell us ______.
A. following rules helps people live safely and happily

Every month, the Birthday Party Project holds birthday parties for the homeless kids. For some kids, it is the first birthday party they have had.
The Birthday Party Project wanted to make every kid feel special (特别的). “Everyone is special,” Paige said. So she started the Birthday Party Project in 2012 and the group’s first celebration was at a homeless shelter (避难所) in Texas.
Today, the Birthday Party Project holds about 50 monthly parties in cities around the county. Nearly 10,000 kids have celebrated their birthday. Dipson, 8, is one of those kids. He lives in a homeless shelter in Minnesota. At a party in March, he and other kids played games and ate cakes. They also opened gifts. “It was very fun.” he said.
The Birthday Party Project has held parties for years. Kids always look forward to (盼望) them. “Mary people come to the party,” Paige said. “It brings the whole place together.”
There are many ways you can help other kids feel celebrated. Join the Birthday Party Project and visit the homeless shelters. Raise (筹集) money by holding sales of old clothes and other activities.
