One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goal: to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside “the polar bear capital of the world”-the town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears-like all wild animals should be photographed from a safe distance. When I'm face to face with a polar bear, I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.
Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though-he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws(爪子).
I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way, but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter(相遇), I took some pictures of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn’t last through 30 more minutes of the bear's punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears’ eyes, but doesn't hurt them. So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar(吼叫), the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph1:A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph2:At that very moment, the helicopter arrived.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【Paragraph 1】
Sobbing with fright, Elli was trembling in my arms and yelled, “it is coming back, what should we do? How can we deal with this dangerous situation?”(紧张、焦虑、害怕兼而有之,只能在哭泣的同时依靠自己的丈夫)
Terrified as I was, what I could do was comfort her while holding the pepper spray, ready to use it to scare the bear off again.(害怕,但必须要保持镇定)
Obviously, the bear knew exactly what I held and dared not to step forward. He just roared at us, and anger with hunger drove him nearly crazy.(被伤害了以后,作为脾气暴躁的大型攻击性动物,肯定是恼羞成怒,寻求报复)
With night approaching, darkness was falling while wind was blowing.(环境描写可以增加紧张感,使得读者身历其境,不禁为作者夫妇捏了一把汗)
【Paragraph 2】
I looked at the eyes of the bear and rays of sympathy filtered through my heart. Maybe he had babies to feed, I thought. I ran back into the camp and out with a bag of food like meat, vegetables, which were leftovers of our camping with the help of the camp manager. The bear became calm when obtaining the food and finally left, with eyes focusing on me, from which I could see gratitude.

Miguel opened the door to his grandpa’s shoe shop. Grandpa was drawing a customer’s foot onto a piece of paper. He didn’t look up. Miguel sat down. He looked at the cut leather, hammer (锤子) and pliers (钳子).
The tools reminded Miguel of something else he loved. Grandpa always gave him a piece of candy whenever Miguel helped clean up. Miguel knew he wasn’t supposed to take candy without asking. But he was hungry then. It looked like Grandpa would be busy for a while. “Maybe I don’t need to wait,” Miguel thought.
Miguel reached secretly for the candy box. He hurried and put it in his mouth. Pretty soon the customer left. Grandpa was busy picking up a piece of leather and putting it in some water. Miguel ate the rest of the candy as fast as he could. Then he walked over to Grandpa.
Grandpa looked up from his work. “Hello!” he said with a smile. Miguel hugged Grandpa. He hoped Grandpa couldn’t tell he’d eaten a piece of candy. “It looks like you’re busy today,” Miguel said. “Do you need any help?” “Sure! Could you pass me that thread (线)?” Miguel nodded. He pulled it between his hands. “Wow, that’s strong.” Miguel said. Grandpa laughed, “It has to be, to last through the wear and tear of life.” Grandpa pulled the thread through the leather.
“You know, we need to be more like this shoe,” Grandpa said. Miguel looked at the leather, “Um. We do?” “Yes, indeed. We need to stay strong. That way temptations (诱惑) won’t make us fall apart,” Grandpa said with a nod.
Miguel suddenly thought of the candy. He knew he should tell Grandpa about it. Grandpa took an old shoe off the shelf, “See this big hole?” Miguel nodded. “This was once a small hole that could have been fixed easily. But the owner waited, and now it’s going to be much harder to fix. Bad habits and bad choices are like that hole. It is best to fix them early.”Paragraph 1:
They kept talking as Grandpa worked.

Wednesday night, it was the closing time of the mall. But there was an hour’s work, at least, to get everything cleaned up. It would be 11 :00 pm before I finally got home. I hadn’t even had time to have dinner. I was starving. My feet ached. My whole body, from head to foot, was filled with tiredness. I couldn’t wait to go to bed. But it would be only 6 hours before the alarm went off at 5 :00 am for my day job.
Things had been tight for over a year. My husband Paul’s business had taken a huge hit. I had a full-time job at a day care centre and somehow did my homework for my college class too. Then I had to work nights at the mall. Without me taking my second job, there wouldn’t be enough money to pay the bills, let alone buy any New Year presents for my 15-year-old daughter, Marie. No one wanted to wake up on New Year’s morning to no presents.
I barely even saw Paul and Marie anymore. Marie was growing up, but a teenage girl still needed her mom. I worried about her. Was she eating enough? Keeping up with her school work? I wasn’t afraid of hard work. Everyone was having to dig deeper these days, putting in extra hours. I knew I was lucky to have two jobs, when millions of people couldn’t find one.
How I hoped to quit my job at the day care centre and obtain a full-time degree. I’d dropped down to one class a semester. If I quit that, there was no way I’d find the willpower to try again. Besides, wasn’t I always telling Marie to never give up?
My mind went back to the conversation I’d had with Marie earlier. Paul had dropped her off at the mall, where she was getting picked up for a babysitting job. “Remember we’re going shopping this night,” she said, “I’ll even have my own money. See you later.”
The floor was nearly done. The manager asked me to leave.
Paragraph 1:
I opened the back door of the mall and saw Marie outside with a bag of food, smiling.

Paragraph 2 :
I pulled her tight towards me.

I was a volunteer for an organisation at the beginning of this year. The organisation is aimed at helping children who suffer from cancer. One day, we were asked to raise money for cancer research and programme funding at an event.
Since my friend Lisa was also a volunteer for the organisation, I went to the event with her. There were many people at the event. After seeing our poster, some people came to us and talked with us. But few people donated money. It was a bit hot that day. Both Lisa and I got really upset.
Half an hour later, Lisa started complaining, “I don’t think we can raise much money today. ”
“Don’t worry. The event lasts for three hours. There is still a lot of time left,” I said, though I also thought poorly of our plan to raise much money that day.
While Lisa and I were talking, a little boy of about eight years old came to us. He stood in front of our poster and started reading.
After a while, he asked, “What is cancer?”
I explained what cancer is. Then I said, “Many people around the world are suffering from cancer. It can be really dangerous. More research is needed to learn about it so that people with it can suffer less. That’s why we’re collecting money for it. ”
“Do children suffer from cancer, too?” asked the boy.
“Yes. Many children suffer from cancer. Some of them may die. They need help. ” Lisa said and I nodded.
Hearing that, the boy became sad. Then the boy asked, “How much money have you collected?”
Both Lisa and I were embarrassed to tell him that we didn’t raise much money. At last, we said, “Not much. ”
The boy looked into our donation container and only saw a few onedollar and fivedollar bills. The boy said nothing after seeing that and left. Then some girls came to us and we started talking with them. Neither Lisa nor I thought the boy would return. However, about twenty minutes later, the boy did return.
The boy happily ran to us and asked, “Would you take a donation from children?”

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp, then we realized the spray had only angered him even more, for he seemed much fiercer this time and violently pushed the fence like mad. My heart raced wildly, not knowing what to do. At this critical moment, Elli grabbed several pieces of garlic bread and threw them over the fence. It worked! The bear stopped the attack and ran to the bread. But it wasn’t long before he eat up all the bread and came back again.
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. “Thank goodness we are saved!” Elli cried out. Once the helicopter landed, we got onto it in no time, excited and relieved. When we were safe on the helicopter up in the air, I was amazed to the spot that the bear had finally tore down the fence and ran towards the food we left behind. I quickly took out the camera and photographed the rare scene- we were robbed by a polar bear.

Paragraph 2:
Miguel told him all about taking the candy. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
They kept talking as Grandpa worked. The whole time, Miguel kept thinking about the candy. When Grandpa finished, Miguel helped him clean up. Then Grandpa reached for his box of candy as usual. Finally, Miguel couldn’t take it anymore. “I took one piece of your candy without asking,” he said and hung his head in shame. Grandpa set down the box in surprise and wondered what had actually happened.Miguel told him all about taking the candy. “I’m so sorry, Grandpa! I’ll never do it again. I promise!” Grandpa hugged Miguel and kissed him lovingly. Miguel felt so much better. “Thank you for being honest. That’s more important to me than just about anything else.” On the way home, Miguel felt just like one of Grandpa’s new pairs of shoes, strong and ready for life.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2 :
I pulled her tight towards me.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
I opened the back door of the mall and saw Marie outside with a bag of food, smiling. She finished her babysitting job fifteen minutes ago. She figured I didn’t have time for dinner, so she bought me food with her own money and waited for me there all the time. While I was eating, she told me that I was her heroine and that she admired everything I did for the family. When she was tired of babysitting, she would think about my hard work and remembered “never gave up”.
Paragraph 2:
I pulled her tight towards me. Tomorrow the alarm would still ring at 5:00 am. The bills would still be waiting. There would be more rough days ahead. And yet I was ready to face them together with Paul and Marie, all of us willing to work hard and holding on to each other. Things would get better with the love of a family.

The boy happily ran to us and asked, “Would you take a donation from children?” Lisa and I looked at each other. We couldn’t believe such a little boy would care. Though we didn’t believe it, we said “yes”. The boy put his hand in his pocket and took out some fivedollar bills. He said, “I just asked for them from my mother. I really want to help the children suffering from cancer. ”
Both Lisa and I were deeply touched. We thanked the boy, but he left soon. Looking at his back, both Lisa and I were greatly encouraged. We wanted to try harder to raise money. So instead of just standing there, we went to people and told them about our programme. At the end of the day, we raised over three thousand dollars, a lot more than Lisa and I had expected in the beginning.
