【答案】18.B 19.C 20.A
W: Good evening, everyone. I recently learnt Arabic in Cairo as part of my degree. My interest in the language was due to the passion of our Arabic lecturer and as the course progressed, my interest in the culture also grew with it. I considered studying in the Middle East, but ultimately decided on Cairo due to its energetic cultural scene. However, in the city, we faced some challenges, including difficulties finding a hotel and accommodation as we were a group of unmarried individuals. Once settled, the culture shock was intense for some of us. One member of our group returned home within the first week. Luckily I became accustomed to the life in Cairo gradually. The biggest challenge of learning Arabic is the disconnection between the written and the spoken forms. Despite these challenges, learning Arabic has been a rewarding experience, including absorbing myself in the culture and getting to know the locals and even negotiating at a local market. Highlights were being invited to a traditional Arabic meal at one of the locals’ home and being able to confidently communicate. Overall, this experience was outside of my comfort zone and allowed me to learn and grow in interesting ways. I encourage others to consider involving themselves in new cultures and languages. Thanks for listening.

On a drizzly British spring day, the 2024 Guinness World Records held a ceremony in Bournemouth to award local lifeguard Chris Lewis the title of the world’s longest-serving lifeguard.
Lewis, 74, began volunteering as a lifeguard at the age of 16. Over the years, he patrolled the beaches as a member of the Royal lifesaving Society, and in 2001, became part of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguard service when the charity began providing beach patrols for local authorities. “It’s the best job in the world,” Lewis said. “You’re working on the beach, which you love, and you’re helping people. What could be better?”
Most of his colleagues are half his age, but he is still fighting fit. A Royal National Lifeboat Institution lifeguard must complete a 400m pool swim in under 7.5 minutes, and run 200m along the beach in under 40 seconds. The swimming fitness tests are still reasonably easy for Lewis. But a little hip trouble, the legacy of a rugby injury, can slow down his running. “I’ve been doing yoga to try to help with that”, he said.
Lewis’s most memorable rescue took place in 2010 when a 16-year-old girl and her two younger brothers got into trouble while swimming off Durley Chine beach. On that day, the girl was being hurled into a groyne (防波堤), leaving her with nasty cuts. One of her brothers was hanging on to the groyne while the third child was being knocked around by the waves. Lewis swam out with a rescue tube and managed to get all three back to the beach. As he got out, everyone on the beach stood up and applauded.
if Lewis does stop any time soon, there is someone else who may just break his record. His wife of 49 years, Elaine Lewis, 70, has been a lifeguard in Bournemouth for 50 years and still competes in lifeguard competitions. Their two children are lifeguards and their grandchildren are in training.
24.How long has Lewis been working as a RNLI lifeguard?
A.58 years. B.49 years. C.35 years. D.24 years.
25.What made Lewis work so long?
A.His interest in swimming. B.His colleagues’ challenge.
C.His love for helping others. D.His desire to regain health.
26.Which of the following best describes Lewis’s job?
A.Well-paid. B.Demanding. C.Creative. D.Exciting.
27.What is presented in Paragraph 4?
A.A practical example. B.The social response.
C.The risks Lewis faces. D.The author’s attitude.
【答案】24.D 25.C 26.B 27.A
根据第二段“Over the years, he patrolled the beaches as a member of the Royal lifesaving Society, and in 2001, became part of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguard service when the charity began providing beach patrols for local authorities.(多年来,他作为皇家救生协会的成员在海滩上巡逻,并于2001年成为RNLI救生员服务的一员,当时该慈善机构开始为地方当局提供海滩巡逻。)”和第一段“On a drizzly British spring day, the 2024 Guinness World Records held a ceremony in Bournemouth to award local lifeguard Chris Lewis the title of the world’s longest-serving lifeguard.(在英国一个细雨绵绵的春日,2024年吉尼斯世界纪录在Bournemouth举行了一场仪式,授予当地救生员Chris Lewis世界上服役时间最长的救生员称号。)”
根据第二段“You’re working on the beach, which you love, and you’re helping people. What could be better?(你在你喜欢的海滩上工作,你在帮助人们。还有比这更好的吗?)”可知,让Lewis工作了这么久的是他乐于助人。故选C。
26.推理判断题。根据第三段“A Royal National Lifeboat Institution lifeguard must complete a 400m pool swim in under 7.5 minutes, and run 200m along the beach in under 40 seconds.(Royal National Lifeboat Institution的救生员必须在7.5分钟内游完400米泳池,在40秒内沿着海滩跑完200米。)”
根据第四段“Lewis’s most memorable rescue took place in 2010 when a 16-year-old girl and her two younger brothers got into trouble while swimming off Durley Chine beach. On that day, the girl was being hurled into a groyne, leaving her with nasty cuts. One of her brothers was hanging on to the groyne while the third child was being knocked around by the waves. As he got out, everyone on the beach stood up and applauded.(Lewis最难忘的救援发生在2010年,当时一名16岁的女孩和她的两个弟弟在Durley Chine海滩游泳时遇到了麻烦。那天,这名女孩被扔进了一个防波堤,留下了严重的伤口。她的一个哥哥紧紧抓住了礁石,而第三个孩子则被海浪拍打着。Lewis带着救生管游了出来,成功地把三个人都救回了海滩。当他出来时,海滩上的每个人都站起来鼓掌。)”可知,第四段主要讲的是一个实际的例子。故选A。
C
Alan Jamieson remembers seeing it for the first time: a small, black fiber floating in liquid. It resembled a hair, but when Jamieson examined it under a microscope, he realized that the fiber was clearly synthetic (人工合成) — a piece of plastic. And worryingly, his student Lauren Brooks had pulled it from the gut of a small amphipod (片脚类动物) living in one of the deepest parts of the ocean.
For the past decade, Jamieson, a marine biologist at Newcastle University, has been sending vehicles to the bottom of marine trenches (海沟), which can be as deep as the Himalayas are tall. These landers have collected amphipods — scavenger relatives of crabs and shrimp that thrive in the depths. Jamieson originally wanted to know how these animals differ from one distant trench to another. But a few years ago, he decided to analyze their body for toxic, human-made pollutants, which have been banned for decades but which persist in nature for much longer.
“It’s not a good result,” Jamieson said. “I don’t like doing this type of work.” When he submitted his findings to a scientific journal, the researchers who reviewed the paper reasonably asked how he could tell that the fibers were actually plastic. To satisfy the critics, his team chemically analyzed a subset of the fibers and found that all of it was synthetic.
Food is scarce in the deep, so amphipods eat pretty much anything, which makes them particularly vulnerable to plastics. And since they sit at the bottom of the ocean food webs, their appetite can upset entire ecosystems, “They’re like bags of peanuts,” Jamieson says, “Everything else eats amphipods — shrimp, fish — and they’ll end up consuming plastics, too. And when the fish die, they get consumed by amphipods, and it goes round and round in circles.”
“So what can we do? The International Union for the Conservation of Nature recommends we protect 30 percent of every marine habitat to address human impacts, but that will only help if we’re also sustainably managing the remaining 70 percent, reducing carbon emissions, and limiting the pollution being dumped in the ocean in the first place.”
28.Which conclusion can NOT be drawn about the fiber?
A.It has been proved to be generated by human. B.It won’t appear again through human’s efforts.
C.It was found in the body of a small amphipod. D.It indicates plastic pollution in the deep ocean.
29.What docs Jamieson’s research focus on?
A.The food of amphipods.
B.The habitat of amphipods.
C.The difference between amphipods in different trenches.
D.The existence of human-made pollutants in amphipods.
30.What’s the scientific journal’s initial attitude towards Jamieson’s findings?
A.Negative. B.Doubtful. C.Supportive. D.Disapproving.
31.By saying “their appetite can upset entire ecosystems”, the author means ________.
A.amphipods have occupied a lot of ocean space because of their appetite
B.amphipods’ habitat should be protected so as to address human impacts
C.amphipods can produce chain effects since they are food resources of others
D.amphipods consuming too much marine resources affect the balance of nature
根据第一段“It resembled a hair, but when Jamieson examined it under a microscope, he realized that the fiber was clearly synthetic (人工合成) — a piece of plastic. And worryingly, his student Lauren Brooks had pulled it from the gut of a small amphipod (片脚类动物) living in one of the deepest parts of the ocean. (它看起来像一根头发,但当贾米森在显微镜下观察它时,他意识到这种纤维显然是人工合成的——一块塑料。令人担忧的是,他的学生劳伦·布鲁克斯从一种生活在海洋最深处的小片脚类动物的肠道中取出了它)”可知,C选项“它是在一个小片脚类动物的身体里发现的”和D选项“这表明深海中有塑料污染”可以得出;根据第三段“When he submitted his findings to a scientific journal, the researchers who reviewed the paper reasonably asked how he could tell that the fibers were actually plastic. To satisfy the critics, his team chemically analyzed a subset of the fibers and found that all of it was synthetic.(当他把他的发现提交给一份科学杂志时,审查这篇论文的研究人员合理地问他是如何判断这些纤维实际上是塑料的。为了让批评者满意,他的团队对其中一部分纤维进行了化学分析,发现它们都是人工合成的)”可知A选项“它已被证明是由人类产生的”。故关于纤维的结论中,B选项“经过人类的努力,它不会再出现了”无法得出。故选B。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段“Jamieson originally wanted to know how these animals differ from one distant trench to another. But a few years ago, he decided to analyze their body for toxic, human-made pollutants, which have been banned for decades but which persist in nature for much longer.(贾米森最初想知道这些动物在不同的海沟之间有何不同。但几年前,他决定分析它们体内的有毒、人为污染物,这些污染物已经被禁止了几十年,但在自然界中存在的时间要长得多)”可知,贾米森的研究重点是片脚类动物体内存在人为污染物。故选D。
30.推理判断题。根据第三段“When he submitted his findings to a scientific journal, the researchers who reviewed the paper reasonably asked how he could tell that the fibers were actually plastic. To satisfy the critics, his team chemically analyzed a subset of the fibers and found that all of it was synthetic.(当他把他的发现提交给一份科学杂志时,审查这篇论文的研究人员合理地问他是如何判断这些纤维实际上是塑料的。为了让批评者满意,他的团队对其中一部分纤维进行了化学分析,发现它们都是人工合成的)”可知,科学杂志对贾米森的发现最初的态度是怀疑。故选B。
31.词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段“Food is scarce in the deep, so amphipods eat pretty much anything, which makes them particularly vulnerable to plastics. And since they sit at the bottom of the ocean food webs, their appetite can upset entire ecosystems, “They’re like bags of peanuts,” Jamieson says, “Everything else eats amphipods — shrimp, fish — and they’ll end up consuming plastics, too. And when the fish die, they get consumed by amphipods, and it goes round and round in circles.”(深海里的食物很少,所以片脚类动物几乎什么都吃,这使得它们特别容易受到塑料的伤害。由于它们位于海洋食物网的底部,它们的食欲会扰乱整个生态系统,“它们就像一袋袋花生,”贾米森说,“其他所有的东西都吃片脚类动物——虾、鱼——它们最终也会消耗塑料。当鱼死后,它们会被片脚类动物吃掉,然后它就会一直循环下去。”)”可知,作者所说的“他们的食欲可以扰乱整个生态系统”,是指片脚类动物作为其他动物的食物资源,可以产生连锁效应。故选C。
D
Adults check their phones, on average, 360 times a day, and spend almost three hours a day on their devices in total. The problem for many of us is that one quick phone-related task leads to a quick check of our emails or social media feeds, and suddenly we’ve been sucked into endless scrolling.
It’s an awful circle. The more useful our phones become, the more we use them. The more we use them, the more we lay neural (神经的) pathways in our brains that lead to pick up our phones for whatever task is at hand-and the more we feel an urge to check our phones even when we don’t have to.
What we do know is that the simple distraction of checking a phone or seeing a notification (通知) can have negative consequences. This isn’t very surprising; we know that, in general, multitasking does harm to memory and performance. One of the most dangerous examples is phone use while driving. One study found that merely speaking on the phone, not texting, was enough to make drivers slower to react on the road. It’s true for everyday tasks that are less high-risk, too. Simply hearing a notification “ding” made participants of another study perform far worse on a task-almost as badly as participants who were speaking or texting on the phone during the task.
It isn’t just the use of a phone that has consequences-its mere presence can affect the way we think.
In one recent study, for example, researchers asked participants to either put their phones next to them so they were visible (like on a desk), nearby and out of sight (like in a bag or pocket), or in another room. They were found to perform far better when their phones were in another room instead of nearby-whether visible, powered on or not.
32.What is the frequency, on average, for phone users to check their phones?
A.Once every 3 minutes. B.Once every 4 minutes.
C.Once every 5 minutes. D.Once every 6 minutes.
33.What causes phone users’ endless scrolling?
A.The curiosity for friends’ latest behaviors.
B.The responsibility for the online safety.
C.The desire for emails or social media information.
D.The information for ensuring personal development.
34.What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A.Simple distraction results in car accidents.
B.Multitasking does no harm to intelligence.
C.A notification “ding” can disturb our work.
D.Answering a phone scarcely affects the driver.
35.Why is an experiment conducted in the last paragraph?
A.To clarify multitasking does harm to memory and performance.
B.To draw a conclusion that we shouldn’t use phones much.
C.To prove that it’s dangerous to check phone s while driving.
D.To demonstrate the presence of a phone impacts our thinking.
根据文章第一段“Adults check their phones, on average, 360 times a day, and spend almost three hours a day on their devices in total. (成年人平均每天查看手机360次,每天花在手机上的时间总计接近3个小时。)”可知,平均每天查看手机360次,每天24小时,1440分钟,平均每4分钟查看1次。故选B。
33.细节理解题。由文章第一段第二句“The problem for many of us is that one quick phone-related task leads to a quick check of our emails or social media feeds, and suddenly we’ve been sucked into endless scrolling. (对我们许多人来说,问题是一个快速的与手机相关的任务导致我们快速检查我们的电子邮件或社交媒体动态,突然我们被卷入无休止的滚动。)可知,需要浏览我们的电子邮件或社交媒体动态导致我们查看手机。故选C。
34.推理判断题。根据第三段最后一句“Simply hearing a notification “ding” made participants of another study perform far worse on a task-almost as badly as participants who were speaking or texting on the phone during the task. (在另一项研究中,仅仅听到“叮”的提示声就会让参与者在任务中表现得更差——几乎和在任务中打电话或发短信的参与者一样糟糕。)”可知,“叮”的声音可以扰乱我们的工作。故选C。
35.推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段“It isn’t just the use of a phone that has consequences-its mere presence can affect the way we think. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
In the journey of life, there’s an often ignored hero — labor. Yes, that’s right, good old-fashioned hard work. Whether it’s mowing lawns, babysitting, or washing dishes, the act of laboring not only fills pockets but also shapes characters and molds futures.
Let’s face it, we live in a world where instant satisfaction is the norm (标准). But what if we told you that delaying that satisfaction and putting in some good, honest sweat can actually be beneficial? It’s true! 36
37 Imagine a teenager tasked with mowing lawns for a summer job. Suddenly, they’re responsible for showing up on time, doing a thorough job, and managing their earnings. These are life skills that no classroom lecture can match.
Moreover, labor breeds (培养) perseverance. 38 Instead of throwing in the towel, they persevere, learning from each setback and growing stronger in the process. This perseverance becomes a cornerstone (基石) for success in all aspects of life.
But perhaps the most profound impact of labor is its ability to foster empathy and appreciation. 39 As teenagers serve meals to the less fortunate, they gain a newfound perspective on privilege and gratitude. Suddenly, that new smartphone doesn’t seem as important as lending a helping hand to those in need.
In conclusion, labor isn’t just about earning a paycheck but it’s also about shaping character and building a foundation for success. So, the next time you see a teenager sweating it out on a hot summer day, remember — 40
A.Labour is significantly beneficial to health.
B.Take, for instance, volunteering at a local soup kitchen.
C.labor isn’t just about earning money and training skills.
D.First, labor gradually acquires a sense of responsibility.
E.Imagine a young adult facing rejection after rejection while job hunting.
F.they’re not just mowing lawns, they’re paving their path to a brighter future.
G.The process of laboring teaches invaluable lessons that textbooks simply can’t convey.
36.上文“But what if we told you that delaying that satisfaction and putting in some good, honest sweat can actually be beneficial? It’s true!(但如果我们告诉你,推迟这种满足,投入一些好的、诚实的劳动实际上是有益呢?这是真的!)”是肯定劳动是有好处的,那么下文将说明劳动有哪些好处。选项G“The process of laboring teaches invaluable lessons that textbooks simply can’t convey. (劳动的过程教会了教科书无法传达的宝贵教训。)”符合语境。故选G。
37.这是段首句,是标题句。下文“Suddenly, they’re responsible for showing up on time, doing a thorough job, and managing their earnings. These are life skills that no classroom lecture can match. (突然之间,他们很负责,会按时到场,从头到尾多做工作,并管理自己的收人。这些都是任何课堂讲座都无法匹配的生活技能。)”是说明劳动会培养责任感。选项D“First, labor gradually acquires a sense of responsibility (首先,劳动逐渐获得了一种责任感。)”
和下文“Instead of throwing in the towel, they persevere, learning from each setback and growing stronger in the process. This perseverance becomes a cornerstone for success in all aspects of life. (他们没有认输,而是坚持不懈,从每一次挫折中学习,并在这个过程中变得更强大。这种毅力成为了在生活的各个方面取得成功的基石。)”,可知空格处要举例说明劳动如何培养出毅力。选项E“Imagine a young adult facing rejection after rejection while job hunting. (想象一下,一个年轻人在求职时面临被一而再的拒绝。)”符合此语境。故选E。
39.根据上文“But perhaps the most profound impact of labor is its ability to foster empathy and appreciation. (但也许劳动最深刻的影响是它培养共情心和欣赏的能力。)”和下文“As teenagers serve meals to the less fortunate, they gain a newfound perspective on privilege and gratitude. (当青少年为不幸的人提供食物时,他们对特权和感激有了一种新的看法。)”,可知空格处引出了如何培养共情心和欣赏的能力的例子,可以承接上文,引出下文。选项B“Take, for instance, volunteering at a local soup kitchen. (以在当地的施粥所做志愿者为例。)”符合此语境。故选B。
40.本句是文章尾段的尾句,结合上文“In conclusion, labor isn’t just about earning a paycheck but it’s also about shaping character and building a foundation for success. (总之,劳动不仅仅在于挣钱,还在于塑造性格和为成功奠定基础。)”,可知破折号后对劳动的意义进一步说明,给出了忠告。选项F“So, the next time you see a teenager sweating it out on a hot summer day, remember — they’re not just mowing lawns, they’re paving their path to a brighter future (所以,下次当你看到一个青少年在炎热的夏天大汗淋漓的时候,请记住——他们不只是在修剪草坪,他们还在为通往更光明的未来铺平道路。)”

My name is Maeja, and it is my job to watch my younger brother, Jungho, as we walk home from school.
“I’m tired,” Jungho complained one day on our way home, “and hungry.” So we stopped to rest. “What do you think Mom is cooking?” I asked. “Barbecue for me!” said Jungho. “Come on.” I stood up. “We need to keep walking.”
At a busy corner, I noticed a street banner(横幅标语)flapping high above. It read, “First Annual Walking Race to Jasan Park! Climb the Mountain to Win a Washing Machine!”
It might be fun to race. I walked to and from school with Jungho every day, and I had hiked with Daddy in Jasan Park. But could I walk fast enough to win?
At home, Mom was working in the kitchen. We had only a single burner stove, so she made rice first. Then she cooked vegetables and fish. When Daddy arrived, everyone ate and talked and shared about their day.
Afterward, Mom and I washed dishes. When she pulled out two metal laundry tubs, her smile disappeared. I knew doing laundry hurt her back and knees. In our neighborhood, only a few families have a washing machine. Mom said a washing machine would be a gift from above. I remembered the banner and told Mom about it.
She sighed, “Maeja, many people will enter that race. You cannot expect to win.”
We carried wet laundry to the flat roof, where Mom hung it to dry. I loved being on the roof with her, but I wished we hadn’t got so many chores. Then I would have had more time to play with friends. If we had a washing machine, both Mom and I would be happy. So I signed up to participate in that race.
注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

Knowing I was not going to win, I was disappointed.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
When the day came, I arrived at the place for the race early. Soon after, the judge blew a whistle. The crowd moved, and I swept along. The road wound up between houses and shops. Children hung out of windows, cheering. I was thirsty and hot, but I thought of Mom bending over the washtub. I kept on walking. We had been walking for hours now, and my legs ached and my lungs burnt. How much longer could I go on? Then I heard excited voices ahead. When I reached the finishing line, I saw a boy in a dark suit. The boy’s face told me he had won.
Knowing I was not going to win, I was disappointed. I never got the washing machine, but instead, I received a mysterious gift. Exhausted, I made my way home. My family came close as my mom opened the box. Nestled inside was a stove with a single burner. “I wanted to win, Mom, but I couldn’t walk fast enough.” I said, feeling very sorry. “But you did win,” Mom hugged me. “With this new stove burner, cooking will be easier. Thank you, Maeja. Tonight we will celebrate with a feast!” We ate barbecue and the food smelt sweet and tasted extra delicious that night.

注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
When the day came, I arrived at the place for the race early.
