Be the best of whatever you are
Douglas Malloch
If you can't be a pine on the top of the hill,
be a scrub in the valley.
But be---the best little scrub by the side of the rill.
Be a bush if you can‘t be a tree.
If you can't be a bush be a bit of grass.
18
And some highway happier make.
If you can't be a muskie then just be a bass.
But the liveliest bass in the lake!
We can‘t all be captains, we’ve got to be crew.
There's something for all of us here.
There's big work to do, and there's lesser to do.
19
And the task you must do is the near.
If you can't be a highway then just be a trail.
If you can't be the sun then be a star.
It isn't by size that you win or you fail.
Be the best of whatever you are!

It isn’t by size that you win or you fail.
Be the best of whatever you are.
So what the writer of this poem and Anderson want to teach us is…..
I hope you can read together.

Characters:
Pea1 Boy
Pea2 Girl
Pea3&Pea4 Mother
Pea5 Narrator
Narrator: Five peas live in a pod together.
They like to talk about the future.
Pea1: Are we going to live here in this
pod forever?
Pea2: Of course not! We’ll get bigger
and stronger. One day we’ll leave
this pod and see the world.
Pea1: Good. I can’t wait for that day!
23
Narrator: The peas are
getting bigger. One day, a
boy picked the pod.
Pea1: Great! We are going to
be free.
24
Narrator: The boy takes the peas out of the
pod.
Boy: Hey, these will make great bullets!
Pea1: Wow! We can get out soon. Maybe
I’ll go and see the world.
Pea2: I’ll fly to the sun.
Pea3&Pea4: We’re happy anywhere. We
only want to sleep.
Pea5: I’ll do something useful.
Narrator: The first pea falls on a roof. A
bird eats it. The second pea falls into
some water. The third and fourth peas
fall into a yard. Two chickens ate them.
The fifth peas hits the window and falls
onto the ground.
Pea5: Ouch! It hurts! Where am I? Oh!
What a nice place! I can get sunshine
and rain.
Narrator: This is Amy. Amy is ill. Her mother
is looking after her.
Mother: Are you feeling better, Amy?
Girl: I’m afraid not, Mum. Look at that plant. It
was very small a few weeks ago. Now it is as
tall as our window! It must be strong. I’ll try
to do the same.
Narrator: The girl looks at the plant every day
and she gets better a few weeks later.
Mother: Thank you, little pea.
