W: School gardening has become very popular recently, with parents and teachers saying its hands-on lessons can be used to teach many subjects. Finding the money to keep a school garden going can be tough. Some experts and teachers, however, are finding creative ways to make it work. Susan Hobart is a retired elementary school teacher. She manages the school’s large garden with 12 raised beds. She said that the gardens help calm the kids and give them a whole different perspective they wouldn’t have just sitting at desks. Toby Adams directs the New York Botanical Garden’s Edible Academy, where schoolchildren learn about growing food. He said that school gardens can teach lessons in health, science, social studies and even arts classes. “For schools without space for even a small garden, turning to local botanical gardens and parks can sometimes be the answer,” Adams said. Ron Finley supports teaching city kids about seeds and growing. His non-profit Ron Finley Project aims to “change the culture around food”. Finley remembered being amazed as a boy when he witnessed how “a seed destroys itself to become food”. “Having a garden in a school is just as important as any other education,” Finley said. Finley used the term reverence, or honor or respect that is shown, when talking about gardening. “If kids respect soil, they’ll respect themselves and this planet. Gardening is not a hobby but a life skill. I see this as one of the most valuable lessons of humanity,” Finley said. A Anyone who has seen a waterfall up close will agree that their majesty(壮观)is almost indescribable. These are the four falls on the planet, each of which is wonderful in its own way. Niagara Falls At 3,950 feet wide, Niagara Falls is far from the largest waterfall around, but it is the falls with the largest volume of water traveling through it and is undoubtedly the best known waterfall on the planet. It receives somewhere between 14 and 20 million visitors annually. It has three separate parts: American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Horseshoe, or Canadian Falls. Chutes Kongou Also known as Kongou Falls, Chutes Kongou measures 10,500 feet wide, making it the world’s third largest existing waterfall. It’s part of the Ivindo River in Gabon, and is roughly 185 feet tall. Among the most powerful waterfalls in the world, roughly 31,800 cubic feet of water f low down it each second. It is located within the Ivindo National Park, which was set up to protect the biodiversity of the Ivindo River. Salto Para Salto Para, or Para Falls, is an 18,400-foot wide waterfall on the Rio Caura in the Bolivar region of Venezuela. These half-moon-shaped falls are formed where two parts of the river come together and drop down almost 200 feet, each side of which is a green jungle island. Chutes de Khone Chutes de Khone—also known as Khone Falls—is the largest waterfall in the world. At 35,376 feet wide, it’s almost twice the width of its next largest competitor. The falls are part of the Mekong River in Laos, and occur where the river divides into seven large channels and many more smaller ones. It’s made up of several different rapids and falls, pouring down from a height of 69 feet. 21. What is special about Niagara Falls? A. It is the most famous waterfall. B. It is next to a green jungle island. C. It is made up of four separate parts. D. It is a half-moon-shaped waterfall. 22. Where is Chutes Kongou? A. In Laos. B. In Canada. C. In Gabon. D. In Venezuela. 23. Which is the largest waterfall in the world according to the text? A. Salto Para. B. Chutes de Khone. C. Chutes Kongou. D. Niagara Falls, 【答案】21. A 22. C 23. 根据Niagara Falls部分“At 3,950 feet wide, Niagara Falls is far from the largest waterfall around, but it is the falls with the largest volume of water traveling through it and is undoubtedly the best known waterfall on the planet.(尼亚加拉瀑布宽3950英尺,远不是世界上最大的瀑布,但它是流经水量最大的瀑布,毫无疑问是地球上最著名的瀑布)”可知,Niagara Falls是最有名的瀑布。故选A。 根据Chutes Kongu部分“It’s part of the Ivindo River in Gabon, and is roughly 185 feet tall.(它是加蓬伊文多河的一部分,大约185英尺高)”可知,Chutes Kongou位于加蓬。 根据Chutes de Kh one部分“Chutes de Khone—also known as Khone Falls—is the largest waterfall in the world.(孔恩瀑布也被称为孔恩瀑布,是世界上最大的瀑布)”可知,Chutes de Kh one是世界上最大的瀑布。故选B。 B As she spoke, Zhang Yue put her hands behind her back to hide that they were shaking. She couldn’t, however, hide the line of sweat running down her forehead, which was caused partly by the heat of the television studio, but more by fear of the four people seated in front of her. They stared back, their blank faces giving no clue as to what they would say next. Feeling dizzy, Zhang Yue took a deep breath as she struggled to finish her presentation, “And that is why I need your help in turning my new and exciting business into a successful one.” Now chairwoman of her own company, Zhang Yue is fond of saying, “The early bird catches the worm.” The place where this happens is a valley, a world away from any television studio. Moving carefully through the darkness, she passes row upon row of rose plants. In an hour, these fields will be full of people, working quickly to pick the flowers before sunrise. “It has to be done then,” says Zhang. “These flowers are delicate.” Zhang never thought that this was something she would end up doing. Surrounded by roses as she was growing up, she paid them little attention. It was only after graduating from university overseas and returning to visit her parents that Zhang realised the potential. “Condition s are ideal here,” she says. “This is a place where roses grow wild. I also wanted to give something back to my home town.” She is not the only young person to have been bitten by the start-up bug. All over the world, an increasing number of enterprising young people are thinking of starting their own businesses, as the growing economy creates more opportunities. Like Zhang, they present their ideas in the hope of getting investment and advice, and they have the same passion and devotion. “I love running my own business, but it’s not for everyone,” says Zhang. “To succeed in business, you need more than a good idea, hard work and determination. What really matters is a sound business plan, access to capital, and good management and negotiating skills. Most of all, don’t be too ambitious. You should know your own limits and those of the people you work with. For young people who have little life experience, that can be a challenge.” 24. From the first paragraph, we know that ______. A Zhang Yue was not a confident business woman B. Zhang Yue was happy to meet her partners C. Zhang Yue was nervous during her presentation D. Zhang Yue needed to be recognized by others 25. What does the sentence “She... bitten by the start-up bug.” mean? A. She was once bitten by a bug. B. She needs other people to help her. C. She is not the only person to be bitten by a bug. D. Many young people share her passion for entrepreneurship. 26. Which words can best describe Zhang Yue? A. Potential and doubtful. B. Passionate and devoted. C. Intelligent and experienced. D. Realistic and pessimistic. 27. What’s the main idea of the text? A. Zhang Yue’s business and suggestions for young people. B. The reason why Zhang Yue chose to be a farmer. C. How to start your own businesses. D. The introduction to Zhang Yue’s home town. C 25. D 26. B 27. 根据第一段中“As she spoke, Zhang Yue put her hands behind her back to hide that they were shaking. She couldn’t, however, hide the line of sweat running down her forehead, which was caused partly by the heat of the television studio, but more by fear of the four people seated in front of her.(张悦说话的时候,把手放在背后,以掩饰手在颤抖。然而,她无法掩饰额头上的汗珠,这部分是由于电视演播室的高温,但更多的是由于害怕坐在她面前的四个人。)”可知,张悦在讲话的时候手在颤抖,额头上留下了汗水,她害怕坐在她前面的四个人,这表明她在演讲时感到紧张。故选C。 【25题详解】 词句猜测题。根据画线句下一句“All over the world, an increasing number of enterprising young people are thinking of starting their own businesses, as the growing economy creates more opportunities.(在世界各地,随着经济的不断增长创造更多的机会,越来越多有事业心的年轻人开始考虑自己创业。)” 根据第四段中的“Like Zhang, they present their ideas in the hope of getting investment and advice, and they have the same passion and devotion.(和张一样,他们提出自己的想法是希望得到投资和建议,他们也有同样的激情和奉献精神。)”和最后一段中的“I love running my own business(我喜欢经营自己的事业)”可推测出,她对自己的事业充满热情(passionate)和奉献(devoted)。 A。 C NASA’s first humanoid robot, Valkyrie, is going through a few of its final testing stages at NASA’s Johnson Space Center(JSC) in Houston, Texas. The humanoid robot, much like Iron Man but constructed from metal and electronics, copies human walking and appearance. NASA is exploring if such machines can further space exploration, starting with the Artemis mission, according to Reuters. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches(188 centimeters) and weighing 300 pounds(136 kilograms), Valkyrie is an electric humanoid robot capable of operating in degraded or damaged human-engineered environments, like areas hit by natural disasters. JSC designed and constructed NASA’s Valkyrie specifically for participation in the 2013 DARPA Robotics Challenge Trials. Drawing on the knowledge gained from the creation of Robonaut 2, the Valkyrie team at JSC created this robot in fifteen months. They integrated enhanced electronics, actuators and sensing capabilities based on the advancements made in earlier generations of humanoid robots at JSC. In July, the humanoid robot went through testing in Australia to assess its software, generating valuable data and feedback for NASA. These tests aimed to advance remote mobile dexterous manipulation(灵活操控) capabilities to enable the remote maintenance of unmanned and offshore energy facilities. NASA has cooperated with robotics firms, including Apptronik based in Austin, Texas, to explore the insights gained from humanoid robots designed for Earthly applications. This cooperation aims to learn how humanoid robots developed for purposes on Earth could help the development of future humanoid robots meant for space. Humanoid robots to be arranged in space hold the potential to perform dangerous tasks such as cleaning solar panels or inspecting malfunctioning equipment outside spacecraft. This capability allows astronauts to prioritize exploration and discovery without putting their safety at risk. “We’re not trying to replace human crews; we’re just trying to take the dull, dirty and dangerous work off their plates to allow them to focus on those higher-level activities,” told Shaun Azimi, NASA Dexterous Robotics Team Leader, to Reuters. 28. What do we know about Valkyrie? A. It is able to walk like a human being. B. It was created within five months. C. It has passed the final tests successfully. D. It looks very different from Iron Man. 29. Why does the author mention "natural disasters" in paragraph 2? A. To predict sales of robots in disaster-hit areas. B. To explain the cause of extreme weather events. C. To show the robot Valkyrie’s working environments. D. To stress the impact of environmental change on humans. 30. What can be inferred about Valkyrie from Shaun Azimi’s words? A. It has disadvantages in comparison to humans. B. It could easily break the plates used by humans. C. It may be a good helper for astronauts in the future. D. It will replace humans to finish higher-level activities. 31. What is the best title for the text? A. A Wide Range of Applications of Robots B. Robot Valkyrie Will Be Tested in Australia C. The History and Future Development of Robots D. NASA Aims to Put Human-like Robots in Space 【答案】28. A 29. C 30. C 31. 根据第一段“The humanoid robot, much like Iron Man but constructed from metal and electronics, copies human walking and appearance. (这个人形机器人很像钢铁侠,但由金属和电子元件构成,模仿了人类的行走和外表。)”可知,Valkyrie能够像人类一样行走。故选A。 根据第二段“Valkyrie is an electric humanoid robot capable of operating in degraded or damaged human-engineered environments, like areas hit by natural disasters. (瓦尔基里是一种电动人形机器人,能够在退化或受损的人类工程环境中工作,比如遭受自然灾害的地区。)”可知,作者提及“自然灾害”是为了展示机器人Valkyrie 的工作环境。故选C。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“ ‘We’re not trying to replace human crews; we’re just trying to take the dull, dirty and dangerous work off their plates to allow them to focus on those higher-level activities,’ told Shaun Azimi, NASA Dexterous Robotics Team Leader, to Reuters. (“我们并不是要取代人类;我们只是想把枯燥、肮脏和危险的工作从他们的盘子里拿出来,让他们专注于那些更高层次的活动,”美国宇航局灵巧机器人团队负责人肖恩·阿齐米告诉路透社。)”可推断,Valkyrie 未来可能是宇航员的好帮手。故选C。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“NASA’s first humanoid robot, Valkyrie, is going through a few of its final testing stages at NASA’s Johnson Space Center(JSC) in Houston, Texas. The humanoid robot, much like Iron Man but constructed from metal and electronics, copies human walking and appearance. NASA is exploring if such machines can further space exploration, starting with the Artemis mission, according to Reuters. (美国宇航局的首个人形机器人瓦尔基里正在德克萨斯州休斯顿的美国宇航局约翰逊航天中心(JSC)进行最后的几个测试阶段。这个人形机器人很像钢铁侠,但由金属和电子元件构成,模仿了人类的行走和外表。据路透社报道,美国宇航局正在探索这种机器是否能进一步进行太空探索,从阿尔忒弥斯任务开始。)”以及全文内容可知,本文主要讲美国宇航局计划将类人机器人送入太空。故选D。 D The heavy use of fossil fuels over the last 150 years has released massive amounts of greenhouse gases, which have caused Earth to warm up. Just planting trees and protecting forests won’t solve the problem. When the plants and trees die, the carbon they’ve stored gets released again. That means humans need to come up with ways of removing carbon from the air and storing it. This is called Direct Air Capture (捕获) (DAC). A company called Heirloom has just opened the first DAC plant in the United States. Heirloom’s process uses limestones, a kind of common rocks, to capture carbon dioxide (CO₂). The company heats up the limestones to separate out the CO₂, which are then locked away in concrete. Heirloom uses renewable electricity to produce the heat, so the process doesn’t produce more CO₂. The process is extremely expensive, but many large polluting companies are paying Heirloom to share the credit for removing CO₂. The new plant can remove 1,000 tons of CO₂ a year. That’s a tiny amount compared to how much carbon needs to be removed from the atmosphere. But the company says it hopes to remove a billion tons per year by 2035. Graphyte is another US company working on DAC. The company claims its carbon capture method is very cheap, mainly because Graphyte lets plants do the work of capturing CO₂. The company collects unwanted plants and wood products and dries them completely so they can’t break down. Graphyte says its process doesn’t use much energy and can work anywhere. The plant and tree material the process uses would release carbon if it weren't treated. Not everyone is excited about carbon removal. Some people worry that focusing on removing carbon could take attention away from more important climate actions, like switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy. But experts say even if people stopped using fossil fuels tomorrow, the climate crisis wouldn't go away. There are still many greenhouse gases, like CO₂, in our atmosphere. The world needs to end fossil fuel use and pull carbon out of the air. 32. What can be learned from paragraph 2? A. How CO₂ is captured. B. What Heirloom's history is. C. Where CO₂ should be released. D. Why Heirloom is established. 33. What is the large polluting companies’ attitude to Heirloom? A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Unconcerned. D. Supportive. 34. What advantage does Graphyte have over Heirloom in terms of capturing CO₂? A. It uses fewer limestones. B. It is less expensive. C. It mainly depends on green energy. D. It builds the DAC plant earlier. 35. Which statement will the author probably agree with? A. It is enough to plant more trees and plants in forests. B. It is essential to capture carbon dioxide from the air. C. People should focus their attention on climate adaption. D. It is impractical to pull carbon out of the air at present. A 33. D 34. B 35. 根据第二段的“Heirloom’s process uses limestones, a kind of common rocks, to capture carbon dioxide(CO₂). The company heats up the limestones to separate out the CO₂, which are then locked away in concrete.(传家宝的工艺使用石灰石(一种常见的岩石)来捕获二氧化碳。该公司加热石灰石以分离出二氧化碳,然后将其锁在混凝土中)”可知,第二段谈及了二氧化碳是如何被捕获的。故选A。 根据第三段的“The process is extremely expensive, but many large polluting companies are paying Heirloom to share the credit for removing CO₂.(这一过程极其昂贵,但许多大型污染公司正在向传家宝支付费用,以分享去除二氧化碳的功劳)”可推知,其他大型污染超标的公司对 Heirloom 的态度是支持的。 根据第三段“The process is extremely expensive, but many large polluting companies are paying Heirloom to share the credit for removing CO₂.(这一过程极其昂贵,但许多大型污染公司正在向传家宝支付费用,以分享去除二氧化碳的功劳)”以及第四段的“Graphyte is another US company working on DAC. The company claims its carbon capture method is very cheap, mainly because Graphyte lets plants do the work of capturing CO₂.(Graphyte是另一家致力于DAC的美国公司。该公司声称其碳捕获方法非常便宜,主要是因为Graphyte可以让植物完成捕获二氧化碳的工作)”可知, Graphyte 相较于 Heiroom的优势在于它捕获二氧化碳的花费更少。故选B。 【35题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段的“But experts say even if people stopped using fossil fuels tomorrow, the climate crisis wouldn't go away. There are still many greenhouse gases, like CO₂, in our atmosphere. The world needs to end fossil fuel use and pull carbon out of the air.(但专家表示,即使人们明天停止使用化石燃料,气候危机也不会消失。我们的大气中仍有许多温室气体,如二氧化碳。世界需要停止使用化石燃料,并从空气中去除碳)”可推断,作者可能认为从空气中捕获二氧化碳是必要的。故选B。 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Anyone who has cooperated with coworkers on a group project knows just how hard it can be to share ideas. In August 2015, at the age of 18, Beale suffered a Jet Ski (水上摩托车) accident on Lake Gaston, along the Virginia-North Carolina border. She and a schoolmate were riding a Jet Sk when another ran over them, hitting Beale. She suffered a spinal cord (脊髓) injury. Prior to the accident, Beale was an active student at college, involved in competition cheerleading and hockey. Afterwards, she had to relearn how to perform daily tasks. “When was in the hospital, doctors told my parents I would be a vegetable, and that I wouldn’t be able to breathe or swallow. I wanted to disprove everything they had on their list,” Beal said. “I told my parents, ‘I am going to work and do this.’” Her parents discovered a facility in California for people fighting with spinal cord injuries and flew Beale there to spend four hours a day for more than a month relearning tasks and strengthening her muscles. She traveled to California nine times to work on her recovery. To process her thoughts, Beale began writing about her experiences. By the time she finished, she had written 32 stories. She eventually gathered them into her first nonfiction book about how people react to her and how she has overcome her injuries and stays positive. “I never thought it would become a book, but that’s how it all started,” Beale said. After the accident, her disability affected her life in some way, especially after her graduation. “For whatever reason, all my dates were bad.” she said. “Each meeting was disability-centered dating. It didn’t feel like dating; it felt like interviewing about my disability. I would open up on the dates and then never see them again. It happened over and over.” Fortunately, Beale has the distinct ability to turn everything about her into humorous and creative ones by writing books. In fact, Beale didn’t start dating to get material for a book. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Shortly after her second book was published, Beale built a happy family. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: In fact, Beale didn’t start dating to get material for a book. She loved to meet people, go out and do things. Eventually, it turned into, “How can I turn a waste of time and hurt feelings into something good? Why not try to find humor in something that is not really funny.” Therefore, she drew comics about her dates’ reactions to her wheelchair-bound status. And her second book—a collection of comics coming from unsuccessful dates—was completed. Shortly after her second book was published, Beale built a happy family. She met her husband in 2021 when she found him sitting in her seat at a church service—they usually attended different services. It was a great encounter. “He was an attractive man,” she said. “He came to my small group at church two weeks later.” After that, they started dating and got married one year later. The most exciting thing was that this couple recently welcomed their son. Everyone around Beale felt overjoyed for her. 词汇激活 行为类 ①完成:complete/finish ②喜爱:love to/enjoy doing ③遇见:meet/encounter/run into 情绪类 ①令人兴奋:exciting/thrilling ②高兴:overjoyed/delighted 【点睛】[高分句型1] The most exciting thing was that this couple recently welcomed their son. Niagara Falls, B As she spoke, Zhang Yue put her hands behind her back to hide that they were shaking. C NASA’s first humanoid robot, Valkyrie, is going through a few of its final testing stages at NASA’s Johnson Space Center(JSC) in Houston, Texas. NASA Aims to Put Human-like Robots in Space D The heavy use of fossil fuels over the last 150 years has released massive amounts of greenhouse gases, which have caused Earth to warm up. 35 Which statement will the author probably agree with? A. It is enough to plant more trees and plants in forests. B. It is essential to capture carbon dioxide from the air. C. People should focus their attention on climate adaption. D. It is impractical to pull carbon out of the air at present. Anyone who has cooperated with coworkers on a group project knows just how hard it can be to share ideas. Instead, she used life-changing injuries to fuel her creativity. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
