In a trading company, we usually need to meet and pick up foreign guests or clients, arrange for their transportation, food and lodging, conventions and trade fairs, etc., which are all included in event organizing activities. In this unit, we are going to practice interpreting skills in event organizing activities, such as meeting foreign guests at the airport, making small talk on the way, helping foreign guests check in at the hotel and informing them of meeting agenda, etc.
Scenario
Rachel Wong, a new graduate from School of Foreign Languages of Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology, is now working as an interpreter at ABC trading company of Shenzhen. She is asked to pick up an important foreign client from Shenzhen Bao’an international airport with the assistant manager in her company. Imagine you are Rachel. What do you need to do in advance in order to fulfill the interpreting task successfully and smoothly?
Task 1: Group work
Work in groups of four. Agree on a list of things you need to do before the interpreting task with your group members.
To check the flight departure and arrival information (delayed ?)
To make a pick-up board
To get familiar with the guests’ information(name, nationality, title, company, religion, taboo…)
To find out the guest’s purpose of the trip…

Mock Interpreting
