In Western countries, some people think the number 13 brings bad luck. In the past, a lot of tall buildings didn’t even have a 13th floor. However, there aren’t really any other numbers that are special in this way in the West.
There are superstitions (迷信) about some numbers in China as well. For example, the number “4” is said to be unlucky because it sounds like the Chinese word for “death”. But that’s just one small example of China’s obsession (迷恋) with numbers.
When I first came here, I was surprised to see that many websites had numbers in their names instead of letters. Because Chinese characters (文字) cannot be used for website addresses. They can only use numbers or the letters of the Roman alphabet.
In pinyin, the telecom company China Unicom is called Zhongguo Liantong. If the company used their pinyin name for their website address, it would be quite long. So instead, they use their customer service hotline number —10010. com. This is easier to type and remember.
In addition, the pronunciations (发音) of some numbers sound similar to other words in Chinese. This makes for some clever wordplay. For example, the numbers “5-2-0” in Chinese sound similar to the pronunciation of the Chinese phrase “I love you”. Many couples choose to get married on May 20 for this reason.
It is interesting to see how Chinese people have used numbers in so many different ways. “88” for now!
16.Which number do some people in Western countries think is unlucky?
A.2. B.4. C.5. D.13.
17.What surprised the writer when he came to China?

C.Some tall buildings don’t have a 13th floor in China.
D.China uses numbers in website addresses.
18.What’s the website address of the telecom company China Unicom in the passage?
A.Zhongguoliantong. com. B.TCCU. com.
C.10010.com. D.TelecomChina. com.
19.Why do many couples in China choose to get married on May 20?
A.Because the weather is usually good on that day.
B.Because it always falls on a weekend.
C.Because 5, 2 and 0 are all lucky numbers in China.
D.Because its Chinese pronunciation is similar to “I love you”.
20.What’s the best title of this passage?

【答案】例文:
How do the students solve their problems?
Our school asked 100 students about their ways of solving problems this week. Here are the results.
52% of students talk to their friends when they have problems. 22% of them ask their teachers or parents for help. And 17% solve problems by themselves. And 9% choose other ways to solve their problems.
For me, asking the teachers or parents for help is the best way to solve problems. I was too shy to make friends when I was in Grade 7. So I was upset. I told my parents the problem. They advised me to join some clubs and taught me how to make friends during activities. From the experience, I know that sharing a problem is like cutting it in half. I believe that as long as we work hard, we will find a solution to the problem. I hope we can get better and better.

Do you know anything about the invention of the bar code (条形码)?
A small food store owner found it was difficult to keep records of the product information. In 1948, he contacted (联系) the Drexel Institute of Technology to solve this problem. Bernard Silver was interested in it and he began to look into it. Silver and his students realized their answer in the form of ultraviolet light (紫外线), ink and a scanner (扫描仪).
The system did work at first, but it’s very expensive and sometimes the system didn’t work well. If the invention was to become popular in grocery stores, the problems had to be solved. Finally, Silver solved them.
The patent (专利权) for the bar code system was asked by Silver and Woodland in 1949. But the patent was not given until 1952. Although this patent was given, the system was still not popular among store owners. In 1966, the system began moving its way into more grocery stores.
Logicon developed the Universal Grocery Products Identification Number (通用标识码) in 1970. Marsh’s superstore in lroy was the first store to set up this bar code reading system. It became very popular ever since, and now it’s obviously popular in all types of stores worldwide (在世界各地).

A.Because the weather is usually good on that day.
B.Because it always falls on a weekend.
C.Because 5, 2 and 0 are all lucky numbers in China.
D.Because its Chinese pronunciation is similar to “I love you”.
20.What’s the best title of this passage?
A.China loves numbers B.The special numbers in West
C.Lucky number in China D.Lucky number in Western countries
