B Joanne Kathleen Rowling entered the world in Chipping Sudbury General Hospital in England, a fitting beginning for someone who would later enjoy making up strange names for people, places and games played on flying broomsticks (扫帚). Many of her favorite memories center around reading — hearing stories read aloud by her father when she had the measles (麻疹), enjoying the fantastic adventure stories, reveling in the magical world and her favorite story of all, The Little White Horse. Rowling remembers that she always wanted to write and that the first story she actually wrote down, when she was five or six, was a story about a rabbit called Rabbit. After college she moved to London to work for Amnesty International as a researcher and bilingual secretary. The best thing about working in an office, she has said, was typing up stories on the computer when no one was watching. During this time, on a particularly long train ride from Manchester to London in the summer of 1990, the idea of a boy who is a wizard (男巫) came to her. He attends a school for wizardry — she could see him very plainly in her mind. By the time the train pulled into King’s Cross Station four hours later, many of the characters and the early stages of the plot were fully formed in her head. The story took further shape as she continued working on it in pubs and cafes over her lunch hours. In 1992 Rowling left off working in offices and moved to Portugal to teach English as a Second Language. She worked afternoons and evenings, leaving mornings free for writing. After her marriage to a Portuguese TV journalist ended in divorce, Rowling returned to Britain with her infant daughter and a suitcase full of Harry Potter notes and chapters. She settled in Edinburgh to be near her sister and set out to finish the book before looking for a teaching job. Wheeling her daughter’s carriage around the city to escape their tiny, cold apartment, she would duck into coffee shops to write when the baby fell asleep. In this way she finished the book and started sending it to publishers. It was rejected several times before she found an London agent, chosen because she liked his name — Christopher Little, who sold the manuscript to Bloomsbury Children’s Books. Rowling was working as a French teacher when she heard that her book about the boy wizard had been accepted for publication. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published in June 1997 and achieved almost instant success. 24. What can we learn about JK Rowling in the first two paragraph? A. Previously, there have been AI models that can turn text into images. They can do this by learning from a large amount of data from both tests and images. This time, researchers from Osaka University in Japan have trained an AI system called Stable Diffusion to recreate images based on people’s brain scans, reported Science magazine. The researchers used an online data set provided by the University of Minnesota, US, which consisted of brain scans from four participant as they each viewed a set of 1,000 photos. The scans were recorded by functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI). The AI then learned about the brain activities by analyzing changes in blood flow shown by the fMRI data: when a part of the brain is activated, more blood will flow to it. It then matched the brain activities with the photos. Finally, the researchers tested the AI on additional brain scans from the same participants when they viewed photos of a toy bear, airplane, clock and train. If the person looked at an airplane, for example, the AI would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very blurry airplane. Then , it would turn on the previous “text-to-image” model and improve the quality of the image by feeding itself the keyword “airplane”. The final images were “convincing” with about 80 percent of accuracy, according to the researchers. The new study created a novel approach that incorporates texts and images to “decipher the brain”, Ariel Goldstein from Princeton University, US, told Science magazine. In the future, scientists hope that the technology can be used to record imagined thought and dreams or allow people to understand how differently other animals perceive reality. 28. What makes Stable Diffusion different from previous AI models? A. It can turn text into images. B. It can reproduce images based on human’s brain scans. C. It can learn from a large amount of date. D. It assist people recollect their previous memory. 29. How did the researchers test the AI if it can recreate image? A. On additional brain scans from the same participants when they saw photos. B. They analyzed changes in blood flow. C. They used functional magnetic resonance imaging. D. They analyzed the date. 30. What is the meaning of “decipher” in the last paragraph? A. Know about. B. Break down. C. Take over. D. Become ill. 31. Which can be the best title of this passage? A. A new study. B. Artificial Intelligence. C Functional magnetic resonance imaging. D. Visualizing our dreams. D The new reported by Coltura offers one of the most detailed pictures yet of Americans’ driving habits and gasoline consumption. The study analyzed GPS data from millions of vehicles and Census Bureau surveys. It builds on earlier reports the group has issued, including a detailed study of high-mileage drivers in California. Here are some of the findings: around 21 million Americans account for 35 percent of the nation’s gasoline use from private light-duty vehicles; that’s cars, pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles, vans and minivans. That’s more gasoline than is burned each year in Brazil, Canada and Russai combined. These drivers are more likely to live in rural areas and small towns, drive an average of 116 miles per weekday and own vehicles that are larger and less fuel-efficient. “If we want electric vehicles to have the greatest impact, we need to get the highest-mileage drivers behind the wheel,” said John Helveston, an assistant professor of engineering at The George Washington University. Helveston is an author of a recent study finding that electric vehicles were driven less than gasoline cars. Recently , lawmakers in California, Maryland, Vermont and Washington have proposed policies to encourage high-mileage drivers to go electric. “We are at the point where we need to start targeting our electric vehicle policies toward the people who are harder to reach” said Phil Ting. In its latest climate action plan, the state of Maryland proposed an electric vehicle rebate worth up to $5,000 for people who drive long distance. The program, which is not finalized, would require applicants to trade in their older cars and show that they previously had used at least 800 gallons of gasoline per year. Burlington Electric Department, a Vermont utility, will soon test an incentive worth up to $500 aimed at helping high-mileage drivers go electric. It the program works, it could be expanded. 32. Which of the following statement is incorrect about the study in paragraph 2? A. These drivers are more probably live in rural areas and small towns. B. The consumption of gasoline is higher than Brazil’s. C. Less fuel-efficient vehicles may be the reason of high consumption of gasoline. D. Americans’ gasoline use from private car is very low. 33. What can we learn from John Helveston’ s words? A. Highest-mileage drivers are encouraged to use electric vehicles. B. Electric vehicles don’t consume gasoline. C. People are forced to use electric vehicles. D. Electric vehicles have a number of advantages. 34. What might the passage talk about in the following paragraphs? A. The measures of Burlington Electric Department’s incentive. B. The construction of Burlington Electric Department. C. Some programs about electric vehicles. D. Some details about a Vermont utility. 35. Where does the text probably come from? A. A science magazine. B. A research plan. C A economy magazine. D. A story book. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Mastering time management is a crucial skill that can enhance productivity and reduce stress, especially for beginners. She always closed the door and never volunteered to help grandpa with housework. In spite of this, grandfather had always been tolerant of her and never got angry with her. This day, was Adela’s good friend Edmund’s birthday. She told her grandfather coldly before going out, “Today is Edmund’s birthday, and he invites me to his birthday party. I won’t be at home for dinner tonight.” The grandfather smiled and nodded and told her to bring Edmund a present. Time flew, and night come quietly. After dinner, grandfather sat in the living room watching TV, but his sight always glanced at the clock on the wall. Once or twice, he do not know how long it was. The clock on the wall was still two minutes away at twelve, and the silk outside the door was not moving at all. Worried and anxious, grandfather began to pace back and forth in the living room. As if for grandfather’s mood, there was a sudden burst of thunder outside, indicating a heavy rain. Thinking that his granddaughter did not have an umbrella, he wrapped himself in a raincoat, took an umbrella, and hurried out to Edmund’s house. A. Artificial intelligence may be able to help. A. Know about. B. It then matched the brain activities with the photos. 和划线单词所在句子“The new study created a novel approach that incorporates texts and images to “decipher the brain””(这项新研究创造了一种结合文本和图像来“decipher大脑”的新方法)可知,这项新研究了解了大脑活动,由此可知,这项研究创造了一种结合文本和图像来“了解大脑”的新方法。所以“decipher”在这里的意思是“了解”。故选A。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。根据全文内容,特别是第二段“This time, researchers from Osaka University in Japan have trained an AI system called Stable Diffusion to recreate images based on people’s brain scans, reported Science magazine.”(日本大阪大学的研究人员训练了一个名为Stable Diffusion的AI系统,该系统可以根据人的大脑扫描重建图像)和根据文章最后一段“In the future, scientists hope that the technology can be used to record imagined thought and dreams or allow people to understand how differently other animals perceive reality.”(在未来,科学家希望这项技术可以用来记录想象的思想和梦想,或者让人们了解其他动物对现实的感知有何不同。) D。 D The new reported by Coltura offers one of the most detailed pictures yet of Americans’ driving habits and gasoline consumption. C. A economy magazine. D. A story book. 【答案】32. D 33. A 34. A 35. Not knowing how many times he tried, grandfather finally stood in the wind and rain. Then he stumbled on,dragging his heavy steps. Through the heavy rain, Adale dimly saw a familiar figure. As the figure came closer and closer, she was surprised that the man was her grandfather. Looking at grandfather’s wet hair, bleeding hands, and dirty raincoat, she couldn’t help feeling guilty and distressed. She cried and asked, “Why do you come to me in this heavy rain?” “It’s late and it’s raining so hard. I’m just worried about you,” grandfather replied with a smile. She couldn’t stop hugging her grandfather and whispered in his ear, “I’m so sorry, grandfather.” Then She took grandfather to the hospital. She learned to take care of her grandfather in the way he had taken care of her. She began to learn to listen to her grandfather, and take care of his daily life and diet. Before long, grandfather gradually recovered. In this process, Adale gradually realized the preciousness of family affection and learned to be grateful.
