Adelaide schoolgirl Tilly Williams, aged 11, has broken a world distance running record, beating other girls who were eight years older than her to run 5000m in just 17 minutes and 22.7 seconds.
The Parkside Primary student beat the previous record by 19 seconds, making her the fastest distance runner under the age of 19 across 60 countries. Tilly started running just two years ago and has already shot straight to the top. When some of her friends informed her of the international record, she decided to give it a try while competing at the SA State Championships. Since then, she has run two to three times a week with her and, Mark Williams, or at the Adelaide Harriers Athletics Club.
Tilly has been inspired by runners Caitlin Adams, Tara Palm, and her favourite book character, Matilda by Roald Dahl. “I could really relate to the main character Matilda because she set herself goals and really had to work hard to achieve them.” she said.
Tilly is set to represent South Australia in Tasmania on Friday at the National 10-12 years Track&Field Championships competition at Launceston. She also has dreams of competing in the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. “In the long-term, maybe, but in the short-term, it’s just achieving a goal and then getting to the next one and then achieving that: it’s a long way down,” she said.
“You never think that anyone’s going to get a world record at this age, at any age really, it’s just surreal,” Mr Williams, Tilly’s dad said. “We’re very proud. It’s very important to recognise these achievements, but also to stay very much grounded and just enjoy the other pursuits that she likes. She loves her running, but she does so many other things as well and I think it’s really important that the focus is on life rather than just one thing.”
4. Which words can best describe Tilly from Paragraph 2?
A. Excellent and courageous. B. Caring and grateful.
C. Ambitious and reliable. D. Daring and generous.
5. Why did Tilly mention Matilda?
A. Matilda was ambitious. B. Matilda was brave enough.
C. Matilda influenced her greatly. D. Matilda was an independent person.
6. What is Tilly’s immediate future goal?
A. To break another world record.
B. To start a professional career in athletics.
C. To represent South Australia in a national competition.
D. To become a member of the Adelaid e Harriers Athletics Club.
7. What does the underlined word “surreal” in Paragraph 5 most likely mean?
A. Expected. B. Very unusual. C. Disappointing. D. Completely normal.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. C 7. B

Gladiator (角斗士) stick figures drawn by young children more than 2000 years ago have been unearthed in the Ancient Roman city of Pompeii.
Archaeologists discovered the figures drawn by children as young as six while digging the ruins of Pompeii, an ancient city near Naples, which described gladiators fighting in battle. Archaeologists also found the outlines of three small hands, two figures playing with a ball, a hunting scene possibly featuring a wild pig, and two fighters, one of whom is lying flat on the ground.
“The drawings were found on the wall of a house known as the ‘Colonnaded Cenacle’ and were probably done by children aged six or seven,” said site director Dr Gabriel Zuchtriegel. Scientists in Naples believed the sketches were drawings of things the children had seen, rather than imagined.
“In Pompeii, even young children were exposed to extreme violence between humans and between humans and animals in the sands of the ancient city,” Dr Zuchtriegel said.
Gladiator fights were a popular form of entertainment in Ancient Rome. Gladiators were fighters who battled one another or animals in a public outdoor stadium called amphitheatre. Many gladiators were slaves (奴隶) who had been purchased by wealthy businessmen and made to light. The people of Pompon and other Roman cities regularly filled the amphitheatre to watch the bloody bottles much in the same way modern folk gather together to stadiums to watch football games.
Other discoveries this week included a unique painting of a child with a small dog at his feet, found in the so-called “House of the Painters at Work”. At the entrance of that house, the skeletons (骨骼) of a man and a woman were discovered, an elderly couple that had probably tried to take shelter during the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD-a disaster that destoryed the entire city completely.
8. What do the figures mainly describe?
A. Family events. B. Gladiator battles. C. Daily life activities. D. Imaginary creatures.
9. What did the children likely base their drawings on?
A. School lessons. B. Their imagination. C. Stories told by adults. D. Things they observed.
10 What can be inferred about the skeletons found at the house entrance?
A. They died in a battle. B. They were in poor health.
C. They were seeking safety. D. They were visitors to the city.
11. What’s the best title for the text?
A. The Daily Life of Ancient Pompeii B. Recent Archaeological Finds in Pompeii
C. The Role of Gladiators in Roman Society D. Natural Disasters in Ancient Civilizations
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. B
【解析】

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Archaeologists discovered the figures drawn by children as young as six while digging the ruins of Pompeii, an ancient city near Naples, which described gladiators fighting in battle.”(考古学家在挖掘庞贝遗址时发现了由六岁左右的儿童绘制的描述角斗士在战斗的图画。)可知,这些图画主要描述的是角斗士的战斗,故选B。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Scientists in Naples believed the sketches were drawings of things the children had seen, rather than imagined.”(那不勒斯的科学家们认为,这些素描是儿童们所看到的事物,而不是他们想象的。)可推知,儿童们的画作很可能是基于他们观察到的事物,故选D。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“At the entrance of that house, the skeletons (骨骼) of a man and a woman were discovered, an elderly couple that had probably tried to take shelter during the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD-a disaster that destoryed the entire city completely.”(在那个房子的入口处,发现了一个男人和一个女人的骨骼,他们可能是在公元79年维苏威火山爆发时试图寻找避难所的一对老夫妇,这场灾难完全摧毁了整个城市。)可推知,这对骨骼可能是在寻找安全的地方,故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Gladiator (角斗士) stick figures drawn by young children more than 2000 years ago have been unearthed in the Ancient Roman city of Pompeii.”(在古罗马城市庞贝出土了2000多年前由小孩子绘制的角斗士简笔画。)可知,短文主要介绍了在古罗马城市庞贝的遗址中发现了2000多年前由儿童绘制的角斗士图画,以及其他一些考古发现。所以短文的标题为“庞贝的最新考古发现”切题。故选B。

In the early 2000s, a great white shark named Nicole swam about 20,000 kilometers from South Africa to Australia then back again within nine months. The first arm of this journey eastwards across the Indian Ocean included the fastest known transoceanic return migration (迁移) among sea animals.
On November 7, 2003, researchers attached an electronic tracker to her fin (鳍) while she was in the waters of South Africa. After completing the first le g of the journey, the tag (标签) fell off near Exmouth Gulf in Western Australia and sent the data to a satellite.
It showed that she had swum from South Africa to Australia, around 11,100 kilometers, in just 99 days—a record-breaking achievement. The researchers thought this would be the end of the story, but she was spotted again on August 20, 2004—all the way back in South Africa.
“This is one of the most significant discoveries about white sharks and suggests that we might have to rewrite the life history of this powerful fish,” Dr Ramón Bonfi l said. “More importantly, Nicole has shown us that separate populations of great white sharks may be more directly connected than previously thought, and that wide-ranging white sharks that are nationally protected in places such as South Africa and Australia are much easier to be hurt by human fishing in the open oceans than we previously thought.”
Great white sharks are some of the world’s toughest travelers, which are regularly seen crossing extreme routes around the world’s oceans. They don’t gently wander on their voyages either; the species can complete some of the fastest transoceanic migrations ever seen by sea animals. While most of the journey was made at the ocean’s surface, Nicole regularly jumped into the Indian Ocean basin (盆地) at a depth of 980 meters. In 2005, this was a record breaker for great whites, but scientists have since found they can swim as deep as 1,128 meters.
12. What was unique about Nicole’s journey to Australia?
A. It was the longest journey by a shark. B. She was the first shark tagged electronically.
C. It was the fastest recorded transoceanic trip. D. It took her less than 100 days to complete.
13. What can we learn from Dr. Bonfil’s research?
A. Populations of white sharks are completely alone. B. White sharks has no significant interconnections.
C. White sharks have closer connections than thought. D. Human fishing has fewer influences on sharks.
14. What does Nicole’s deep swimming behavior suggest?
A. Great whites prefer deeper waters. B. Great whites hunt in deep ocean basins.
C. All great whites jump into similar depths. D. Great whites can survive extreme pressures.
15. In which section of a newspaper many the text appear?
A. Nature. B. Technology. C. Entertainment. D. Education.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. A

The most important goal of discipline (管教) is teaching children and teenagers self-management and responsible decision-making. It is not about control but instead using positive discipline. When children know what will happen, they can make choices. Parents benefit, too, from having a plan of how they will respond to specific behaviour rather than reacting in anger.
____17____ Have a conversation to work through what happened in a particular situation, asking the young person how they made the decision and what the impact of their choices was. Teenagers are often unwilling to talk to parents, facing their parent’s disappointment and requests for explanations. ____18____ The goal of this difficult conversation is to help the teenagers understand the impact of their behaviour.
Taking responsibility and repairing harm by making changes is a powerful consequence that teaches young people about the impacts of their behaviour on others. If an older child has hurt a friend’s feelings, coaching them in talking it through and apologising. ____19____

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Anybody have a bandage (创可贴) ?” a roommate spoke in a loud voice in the dormitory (宿舍) hallway.
It was our first week at college and we were all experiencing “being forgetful”. I had forgotten to bring snacks for late-night talks. Some poor girl who caught the earlier flight to the college had obviously forgotten bandages. It seemed that we were forced to move away from the home where we used to live.
Several months ago, I sat at my high school graduation party admiring my gifts and I was lost in thought. I found it hard to say goodbye to old friendships while longing for what would happen at college. The usual and beloved inspirational books were seated around my feet, silently telling about the wealth of wisdom they wished to share. A small pile of personal checks lay nearby. Notebooks with nice covers, desk supplies, and a collection of photos — all well-intentioned and well-received — they would show their givers’ thoughtfulness over and over during my college life.
But one gift struck me as strange. I frowned (皱眉) , figuring out what stayed inside when I opened it. Medicine? A small box of pills, creams, bandages and some other medical items lay within the package. Who would give that as a gift?
“You’ll need that once you’re at college,” Mom pointed out. “You won’t have to turn to the campus nurse for every cough. Luck can often mean simply taking advantage of a situation at the right moment. It is possible to make your luck by always being prepared.”
Not long after, in August, I packed my life into a borrowed truck and carried the bag of medicine along with my backpack. I hardly thought about it once I reached the campus, caught in the massive work of unpacking, book-buying, scheduling and preparing myself for the new school life.
注意:1. 续写词数应150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When hearing the roommate’s words that day, I remembered my medicinal package.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The little gift I had questioned now led me toward new friendships.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】When hearing the roommate’s words that day, I remembered my medicinal package. “Actually,” I replied with much confidence, “I have one.” “Great,” my roommate sounded hopeful. As I dug out the pack, we began to chat. Soon, many of the other girls on the same floor heard of my little medicinal package and paid me a visit. A girl with a headache nearly kissed my hands when I passed her simple painkillers. As the cold season approached, many needed cough drops. Each girl stayed to chat for a few moments.
The little gift I had questioned now led me toward new friendships. As it broke fevers, it also broke the ice, allowing me to meet and befriend many at college. A month later, I received a birthday party invitation from my roommate. “Come and celebrate with us!” read the cheerful type. Memories of my own party rushed back to me, and I smiled at the opportunity presenting itself. I knew exactly what the birthday party would mean — the chance to meet like-minded people.

10. What can be inferred about the skeletons found at the house entrance?
A. They died in a battle. B. They were in poor health.
C They were seeking safety. D. They were visitors to the city.
11. What’s the best title for the text?
A. The Daily Life of Ancient Pompeii B. Recent Archaeological Finds in Pompeii
C. The Role of Gladiators in Roman Society D. Natural Disasters in Ancient Civilizations
D
Great white sharks are some of the world’s toughest travelers which are regularly seen crossing extreme routes around the world’s oceans.

14. What does Nicole’s deep swimming behavior suggest?
A. Great whites prefer deeper waters. B. Great whites hunt in deep ocean basins.
