55-year-old Rob Kenney, who grew up without a father, has been doing his part to make a difference in the lives of kids today.
He created a YouTube channel, called Dad, How Do I, which aims to give youths the valuable lessons a father is meant to give. Launched only two months ago, his channel already has more than two million subscribers (订阅者). Rob teaches children and adults, many of whom are also without a dad, basic skills such as how to tie a tie, how to cook meals, how to repair a lamp and many more.
“I didn’t start this to make money,” Rob told his viewers. “I just thought I was going to help a few people... 30 or 40 subscribers... but it’s turned into a way more than that. And please don’t think I am only aiming this at young men. It is for anybody who feels that they need to learn something.”
Now that his channel has had such huge unexpected success, Rob plans to give his earnings to a number of international charities.
Many viewers have been touched by the warm words Rob shares in his videos. Such simple words, like “I love you”, “You’ve done a good job” and “I’m proud of you,” can have a deep impact on many children, even some adults. He starts each video with an enthusiastic “Hey, kids!” — but Keiha Danaher said that she was a 33-year-old woman, and she answered back crying, saying, “Hi, dad!”
Rob’s childhood story makes him a role for the kids who watch his channel. By the age of 14, his parents had divorced. He had to move in with his elder brother and learn from the tough life experiences without parents in his life. But that didn’t prevent him from being a good father to his children. His experience shows his viewers that there is always opportunity in the face of difficulties.

The earliest discovered cave paintings date back to the Upper Paleolithic (旧石器时代晚期) period. We might expect that they would be simply made, but the cave paintings of Spain and southern France show a high degree of skill. So do the cave paintings in southern Africa. Some of those appear to have been painted as much as 28,000 years ago, which suggests that painting in Africa is as old as that in Europe. The early Australians may have painted on the walls of rock shelters at least 30,000 years ago.
The researchers identified three principal locations of paintings in the caves of western Europe: in obviously inhabited (有人居住的) rock shelters and cave entrances; in galleries near the inhabited areas of caves, and in the inner reaches of caves, whose difficulty of access has been considered as a sign that magical religious activities were performed there.
The subjects of the paintings are mostly animals. The paintings rest on bare walls, with no decoration. Perhaps, like many contemporary peoples, Upper Paleolithic men believed that the drawing of a human image could cause death or injury, and if that was their belief, it might explain why human figures are rarely found in cave art. Another explanation for the focus on animals might be that these people sought to improve their luck at hunting.
The particular symbolic significance of the cave paintings in south western France is more clearly revealed by the results of a study. The data suggest that the animals in the cave paintings were mostly the ones that the painters preferred for meat. For example, wild cattle and horses are found more often than we would expect by chance, probably because they were larger and heavier meatier (多肉的) than other animals in the environment. In addition, in the paintings there are mostly animals that the painters may have feared the most because of their size, speed, natural weapons such as horns. That is, mammoths (猛犸) were drawn more often than deer.
8. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Painting in Europe is not so old as that in southern Africa.
B. The cave paintings in southern Africa reflect ancient people’s super skill.
C. The early Australians drew cave paintings later than the early Europeans.
D Most of the cave paintings of Spain and southern France were simply drawn.
9. Where can we find galleries in western Europe?
A. Close to the inhabited areas of caves.
B. In the inner reaches of caves.
C. In a place too far from caves.
D. At cave entrances.
10. What does the third paragraph reveal about the cave paintings?
A. The subjects mainly include plants and animals.
B. Human figures are usually found in cave art.
C. The paintings were drawn on bare walls.
D. They were carefully and well decorated.
11. Which might NOT be the reason why mammoths were often drawn in the paintings?
A. They were very fast.
B. They were quite large.
C. They were rather tasty.
D. They had natural weapons.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. C

【16题详解】
由上文“Soft skills can make a huge difference to your life. (软技能会对你的生活产生巨大的影响。)”以及下文的“Without them, you’ll struggle to find work, partners and happiness. Happy and successful people are likely to have most, if not all, of the soft skills listed below. (没有它们,你将很难找到工作、伴侣和幸福。快乐和成功的人很可能拥有下面列出的大部分软技能。)”可知,这里需要对软技能进行举例,进行进一步的解释。因此,选项G“They include being a good listener, working with other people well and showing a positive attitude (它们包括做一个好的倾听者,与他人良好合作,表现出积极的态度)”能承上启下,符合题意。故选G。
【17题详解】
由上文“Being-able to work harmoniously in a team is a skill of vital importance. Whether you work in a factory or an office, it’s certain that you are part of a team. 【19题详解】
由上文“See the best in others. Ask yourself if you have this quality. Many people don’t have it. (看到别人的优点。问问你自己,你是否有这种品质。很多人都没有。)”可知,要看到别人的优点,并且指出了很多人不具备这种品质,接下来应该强调具备这种品质的好处。因此,选项B“However, having this skill is great (然而,拥有这种技能是很好的)”是一个合适的转折,表明拥有这项技能的积极意义,能承接上文,符合题意。故选B。

Dear Jack,
These days, I feel rather upset. At school I am good at maths and English, while I find physics and chemistry a bit difficult to learn. But my parents think I should be good at every subject. Whenever I come back home late, they get very angry with me and they often quarrel with me. You know I like playing basketball, but when a weekend comes, they always tell me to do my lessons and they don’t allow me to do anything else. Now I am even bored of my study.
As we’re growing up, all of us may meet with these problems. Can you give me some advice on how to get along well with my parents and how to keep balance between my study and hobby?
Yours,

47. 读后续写
My son David was injured in his forehead so I had to take him to a hospital. I looked around the crowded waiting room in the hospital and sighed. I thought, “Will the doctor be able to see my eight-year-old son soon?” I tried steadying the ice pack (冰袋) over his forehead, but it was no use. I couldn’t stop shaking. The injury in his forehead was deep, but at least blood wasn’t pouring from it anymore.
His face was full of tears, but he seemed really brave for his age. I handed him the ice pack, and he covered his forehead with it. He was doing a much better job than I had. We were at the hospital because another child had thrown a rock at David during a break between classes as he was running around the corner. His teacher called me, and when I arrived, I found him sitting in front of her. His teacher was caring for his injury, trying to keep him calm. She felt terrible about what had happened, but I knew none of it was her fault.
David received four stitches (缝线) and didn’t cry once throughout the whole treatment. For the next two days, his forehead was swollen and black and blue. I felt like I’d had a mini nervous breakdown. Every time I tried to sleep or tend to housework, horrible thoughts crept into my mind. Fear had taken over, and then the fear turned to anger. I was angry with the child who’d thrown the rock. I just couldn’t shake it. What was she thinking? She should have known about that better.
David’s headmaster and teacher called me that evening to see how David was feeling and told me Cherry, the girl, felt terrible. I wanted to stand up for my son, do the right thing and protect him.
The next day, David’s teacher stopped by to see how David was feeling and dropped off a get-well card that Cherry had made. David and I read it several times, and I couldn’t help but feel a little choked up. It was a sincere apology.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
This card mattered a lot to us.

We wondered how Cherry would make a response after reading the letter.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
This card mattered a lot to us. I wanted this to be a teachable moment for David. I asked David if he was ready to forgive Cherry. After all, his opinion counted the most. He thought about it for a moment, smiled and said, “Yes.” He knew Cherry hadn’t done it on purpose. Children are so friendly and so honest. They don’t hold onto anger like adults do sometimes. Their hearts are pure, so we wrote her a letter together, reading, “We know it was an unfortunate accident. We forgive you, and we hope you forgive yourself.” We asked David’s teacher to pass the letter to Cherry.
We wondered how Cherry would make a response after reading the letter. Later, David’s teacher told us Cherry was relieved after reading our letter. She was glad that David was feeling better and healing. David and Cherry both learned that forgiving someone was a part of healing and could release anger. The next time I showed up at David’s school, Cherry gave me a big hug. I hugged her back. We didn’t have to say anything else. We both knew forgiveness was the most important step to get healed.

55-year-old Rob Kenney who grew up without a father, has been doing his part to make a difference in the lives of kids today.
4. Why did Rob Kenney create the channel Dad, How Do I in the beginning?
A. To cheer up those who feel upset.
B. To make some money to support his family.
C. To teach children and adults some useful life skills.
D. To offer youths advice on how to get on well with others.
5. What can we infer from Rob’s words in the third paragraph?
A. Rob’s videos are only intended for young men.
B. Subscribers are mainly made up of poor people.
C. The number of subscribers is larger than Rob expected.
D. Rob guesses there won’t be more people to subscribe his channel.
6. What does Rob plan to do in the future?
A. Make his videos more entertaining and instructive.
B. Help more children improve their intelligence.
C. Let more people have sympathy for him.
D. Donate the money he earns to charities.
7. Why are the viewers moved by what Rob shares in his video?
A. They think Rob is just like their real father to take care of them.
B. The words in Rob’s videos are warm and encouraging.
C. Rob’s experiences remind them of their own.
D. Rob’s attitude toward life is always positive.

My son David was injured in his forehead so I had to take him to a hospital. I looked around the crowded waiting room in the hospital and sighed. I thought “Will the doctor be able to see my eight-year-old son soon?” I tried steadying the ice pack (冰袋) over his forehead, but it was no use.
