Good packing should not only keep the goods in perfect condition without loss and leakage on arrival, but also push sales. Shipment is quite complicated as it involves various parts. Goods can be transported by train or by air, but most often, by sea or by water. Learning Objectives 1. To know the classification of packing and the terms on shipment; 2. Chapter 7 Packing and Shipment 4 Step 01 Shipment usually covers a wide range of work which includes: (1) buyers sending shipping instructions (2) sellers sending shipping advice (3) booking shipping space (4) chartering ships (5) appointing shipping agent (6) arranging shipment (7) nomination of vessels, etc. 7.1 Introduction Chapter 7 Packing and Shipment 5 Step 01 Before shipment, the buyers generally send their shipping requirements to the sellers, informing them of packing, mark, mode of transportation, etc. This is the shipping instruction. On the other hand, the sellers usually send a shipping advice to the buyers, especially under FOB and CFR terms. Shipping advice, also known as declaration of shipment or notice of shipment, is what the seller send to the buyer after making the shipment, informing him of the shipment details. In general, a shipping advice may include: contract and/or L/C number(s) name of commodity number of packages total quantity shipped name of the vessel sailing date of the vessel total value of the shipment gross weight and net weight 7.1 Introduction Chapter 7 Packing and Shipment 6 Step 01 7.1 Introduction Chapter 7 Packing and Shipment 7 also called as outer packing or large packing, aims to protect goods from damage in the process of transportation. Transport packing also called inner or small packing, is designed to promote sales as well as present the goods, which must be nice to look at, easy to carry and beneficial to the sales. Sales packing marked with neither name of the origin country, name and address of the manufacturers nor original trademark. The purpose of using neutral packing is to elude the discriminatory tariffs of some importing countries or to meet the buyer’s special requirements. Neutral packing Chapter 7 Packing and Shipment 7.1.1 Types of Packing 8 Shipping marks, also named as transport marks, are mainly used to identify the goods in transportation and storage, which is printed on the outer packing. Shipping marks should contain the information as follows: * initials or abbreviations of the consignee’s name * reference number (contract number, order number, credit number) * port of destination * number of the packed goods 7.1.2 Shipping Marks Chapter 7 Packing and Shipment 9 7.1.2 Shipping Marks Chapter 7 Packing and Shipment 10 Indicative marks usually consist of simple and noticeable diagrams and words printed on the outer package of the product which is fragile or perishable regarding the way of proper handling, storing, loading and unloading, such as: 7.1.2 Shipping Marks Chapter 7 Packing and Shipment 11 Warning marks are used to warn against the potential danger of the commodities which are flammable, explosive, poisonous, radioactive and so on, such as: * EXPLOSIVE * INFLAMMABLE * RADIOACTIVE * POISON 7.1.2 Shipping Marks Chapter 7 Packing and Shipment 12 Goods are carried by several means of conveyance—on road or rail, by sea or air, or by combined transport which has appeared in recent years. 7.1.3 Shipping Methods Chapter 7 Packing and Shipment 13 Apart from negotiations on packing and shipping method, there are other factors that should be taken into consideration in international trade. Therefore, terms of shipment serve as an integral part in negotiating the clause in a sales contract. Time of shipment refers to the time limit for loading the goods on board the vessel at the port of shipment (if shipment is made by sea) in accordance with the terms and conditions of the contract. Port of loading is the port of departure. Port of destination is the destination that the goods are finally designated to. Means of conveyance covers direct shipment, transshipment and partial shipment.
