Payment
Payment plays an important role in commercial transactions. Compared with domestic trade, the payment terms of international trade turn out more complex.
Learning Objectives
1. To get acquainted with the different terms of payment;
2. To comprehend the essential content of a letter related to payment;
3. To master relevant and useful expressions.
Chapter 6 Payment
4
The international trade usually spans a long time from establishment of business relations to placement of orders, execution of contract, and then to shipment and pick-up of goods, so the buyer may have effected payment several months before receipt of the goods, or the seller may have to wait for several months to get paid after arranging shipment. Both the buyer and the seller run certain risks. Therefore, a reliable and safe method of payment should be established.
The most generally used modes of payment in international trade comprise remittance, collection and letter of credit.
6.1 Introduction
Chapter 6 Payment
5
In the case of remittance, the importer remits the amount of money for the goods to the exporter through banks. It includes primarily three kinds: mail transfer (M/T), telegraphic transfer (T/T) and demand draft (D/D).
6.1.1 Remittance

M/T T/T D/D
Instrument of payment Letter of authorization Telegraph, telex or SWIFT Sight draft

Comparison of M/T, T/T and D/D
Chapter 6 Payment
Collection means that the exporter draws a draft after shipment and submits the draft and shipping documents to the seller’s local bank, which sends instruction to its branch bank or a corresponding bank in the importer’s country to collect the payment for the goods.
According to whether commercial documents are attached to financial documents when submitting to the remitting bank, collection can be divided into clean collection and documentary collection.
6.1.2 Collection
Chapter 6 Payment
8
Documentary collection is often used, including documents against payment (D/P) and documents against acceptance (D/A).
D/P refers to an arrangement that involves the exporter giving the key shipping documents to the importer only when the exporter has paid the full amount under the bill of exchange.
By D/A, the importer does not have to pay in order to receive the shipping documents. Instead, the importer needs to show that he agrees with the payment amount, and then sends the signed accompanying bill of exchange back to the exporter, who after receiving signed bill of exchange, would hand over the documents to the importer through the corresponding bank.
6.1.2 Collection
Chapter 6 Payment
9
Most frequently used method of payment in international transactions.
A letter of credit is an arrangement where an issuing bank (typically, the buyer’s or importer’s bank) unconditionally guarantees to pay the seller’s bank when the goods are delivered along with specific documents containing very precise information.

Dear Sirs,
We thank you for your order No.880 for 150 metric tons of cement, but we regret that we are unable to accept your terms of payment mentioned therein.
In our last letter, we sent you a copy of our specimen contract which contains the general sales terms and conditions. If you have gone through the specimen contract, you will notice that our usual terms of payment are by confirmed, irrevocable letter of credit in our favor, available by draft at sight, reaching us one month ahead of shipment, remaining valid for negotiation in China till the 21st day after the prescribed time of shipment, and allowing transshipment and partial shipments.
We also mentioned in our letter of 14 June that several big Italian firms had already done business with us according to above terms. We hope therefore that you will not hesitate to come to agreement with us on payment terms so as to get the first transaction concluded.
As soon as we hear from you in the affirmative, we will send you the contract, so that the goods can be ready for shipment as requested.
We look forward to receiving your favourable reply soon.
Yours faithfully,
Chen Hong

Dear Sir,
We have received your sales confirmation No. 768 regarding our order for 1,000 dozen men sweaters. On perusal, we find all other terms are acceptable to us except the terms of payment that require irrevocable and confirmed L/C.
For a small size order on advertised promotion, we feel it unnecessary to have a letter of credit opened since we have to put a deposit and the charges resulting therefrom would increase our cost. Could you please accept payment by T/T which will be more convenient and faster?

Letter 8 Asking for Payment by D/A
6.2.6 Documents against Acceptance (D/A)
Chapter 6 Payment
Dear sirs,
We have received your contract for the present order. Our past purchase of steel sheets from you has been paid as a rule by confirmed, irrevocable L/C.
On this basis, it has indeed cost us a great deal. From the moment we open the L/C till the time our buyers pay us, the tie-up of our funds lasts about four months. Under the present circumstances, this question is particularly taxing owing to the tight money condition and unprecedented high bank interest.
If you would kindly make easier payment terms, we are sure that such an accommodation would be conducive to our further businesses. We propose D/A which will give us more time for funding.
Your kindness in giving priority to the consideration of the above request and giving us an early favourable reply will be highly appreciated.
Yours faithfully,

Thank you for your letter of November 18. We have carefully studied your proposal for payment by D/A for a trial order of T-shirts. We regret that we are unable to entertain your request.
Our usual practice is to require payment by confirmed and irrevocable letter of credit. That is to say, at present, we cannot accept D/A terms in our transactions with buyers abroad. However, considering our friendly relationship, we are, only in this exception, prepared to accept D/P at sight. In other words, we will draw on you by documentary draft at sight, through our bank, on collection basis.

Looking forward to your earliest reply.

V. Translate the following letter into English.

V. Translate the following letter into English. 将下列信函翻译成英文。
We’ve received your letter of February 9, asking us to send you a shipment (delivery) of tea set for sale on D/A term.
As is known to all, our payment must be made against sight draft drawn under a confirmed, irrevocable letter of credit for the amount (our terms of payment must be made by confirmed, irrevocable L/C by draft at sight for the amount). Therefore, we regret we cannot accept your request. But in view of your goodwill of pushing the sale of our products, we can exceptionally accept the payment by L/C at 60 days’ sight draft.
We trust that the special accommodation given to you will enable you to make a favor decision.

DOLLARS THIRTY SIX THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED AND EIGHTY ONLY”。
(3)目的港应为MONTREAL而非TORONTO。
请你给Jason White先生去函要求对方尽快改正。

Dear Mr. White,
We are in receipt of your letter dated No.25 informing us of the establishment of the L/C No. CTS 386599. On examination, we have found some discrepancies from our S/C. Please make the following amendments without the least possible delay:
1.The letter of credit shall be stated in compliance with the UCP 600 rules;
2.The total amount of the contract shall be “SAY U.S. DOLLARS THIRTY SIX THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED AND EIGHTY ONLY”;
3.The port of destination will be MONTREAL, rather than TORONTO.
We suppose that the above mistakes are clerical and hope you will make necessary amendments without delay by fax in order for us to make the shipment in time.
Your early reply is highly appreciated.
Yours faithfully,
Chloe Lee
