B Skiing has been around since early civilization, evidenced by a 5,000-year-old rock carving representing men on skis hunting deer in Norway, and the discovery of a ski dating back to 6000 B.C. found in Vis, Russia. Historians debate where skiing first got its start, though; some argue that it was in Altay, China, in 8000 B.C. Modern skiing, however, can date back to the Scandinavians, who mainly used skis as a means of travel or for other practical purposes, particularly the Indigenous Sámi people in Norway, Finland, and Sweden, writes Raymond Flower in The History of Skiing and Other Winter Sports. Norse myths (挪威神话) even described Ull, a winter god, on skis with curved tips and included other stories of heroes and goddesses skiing down mountains. Some of the first official competitions began around 1850 in Norway, with the first recorded race in Sweden held outside Stockholm in 1879. Skiing became a household word with the publication of the popular book offering a thrilling account of Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen’s difficult and historic journey on skis across Greenland in 1888. The sport spread to the Swiss Alps, where it was enjoyed largely by British vacationers, before clubs popped up around the world in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Variations of the sport developed over the years, such as the slalom race (障碍滑雪), downhill jumping, and mountaineering. The British are largely credited with transforming skiing from its Scandinavian roots into the highly competitive sport it is now. In 1921, they developed rules that became widely accepted and adjusted the slalom race to include flag gates to test the skill of skiers’ turns. Skiing then exploded in popularity after World War II, when ski resorts (胜地) gradually developed to receive single-day skiers as well as those taking longer vacations. 24. What can we learn about Raymond Flower? A. He wrote about skiing. B. He invented skiing. C. He recorded Norse myths. D. He was good at rock carving. 25. Why did skiing become a well-known word in the late 1800’s? A. Some official competitions were held. B. The British spread it all over the world. C. It was written in the textbook on history. D. An adventure book about skiing came out. 26. Who contributed most in changing skiing to a more competitive sport? A. The Swiss. B. The British. C. The Norse. D. The Finn. 27. What can be the best title for the text? A. How Did Skiing Develop in Norway? B. Why Did People Kill Time by Skiing? C. What Are Skiing Adventures All About? D. What Are the Ancient Origins of Skiing? C Concrete has served as the foundation stone of the construction industry for hundreds of years. However, the process of producing concrete is one of the most environmentally unfriendly processes in the world. In the process, not only is carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) released into the air by the energy used to heat the limestone, but the limestone itself also gives out a huge amount of the element. Luckily, a number of start-ups throughout the world are using creative thinking to make the construction industry a whole lot more friendly for the planet. A Canadian company called CarbonCure, has found a way to inject (注入) concrete with carbon dioxide itself. Not only does this trap the carbon dioxide into the concrete, keeping it from running away into the atmosphere, but it also creates a super strong material called calcium carbonate, which reduces the total amount of concrete that needs to be used. California-based Brimstone, is creating carbon-negative concrete by doing away with limestone entirely and instead using silicate rock, a material that does not release carbon dioxide when heated. Instead, the process produces magnesium (镁) , which absorbs carbon dioxide, as the basis for their concrete. Additionally, researchers at Australia’s RMIT University have recently released a study showing that adding coffee grounds instead of sand to concrete could make it much stronger, reducing both the amount of sand used, as well as the amount of concrete that would need to be used in the final product. The biggest barrier at this point is convincing members of the industry that the new types of concrete are safe to be used, according to Stacy Smedley, director at a nonprofit focused on decarbonizing construction. Hopefully these new solutions to the environmental problems of concrete will soon be widely adopted. Given the significant part the construction industry has in releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, great improvements can be made when more environmentally-friendly materials are used. 28. What is the environmental issue associated with traditional concrete production? A. The high demand for energy. B. The processing of waste materials. C. The mass release of carbon dioxide. D. The use of non-renewable resources. 29. How does CarbonCure deal with the environmental impact of concrete production? A. By using silicate rock as the basis. B. By putting carbon dioxide into concrete. C. By replacing sand with coffee grounds. D. By absorbing carbon dioxide with magnesium. 30. According to Smedley, what is the major challenge facing these solutions? A. Difficulty in making profits. B. Convincing the public of the convenience. C. Lack of funding for research. D. Removing the industry members’ safety concerns. 31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A To promote an alternative to concrete. B. To advocate environmental protection. C. To introduce new ways to produce concrete. D. To emphasize the significance of creativity. D Scientists Diego Kersting and Cristina Linares have found that some coral species are able to recover from harmful warming events through a unique survival strategy(策略)—known as “rejuvenescence”(新生)—among corals in the Mediterranean Sea. The findings represent some rare good news for corals around the world, which are facing numerous severe threats—most notably, climate change. “The main threats are climate change, overfishing, pollution and coastal urbanization,” Kersting said. “But currently, climate change is probably the one causing the most coral cover declines. Warming stresses corals up to a point that may cause death. Some corals bleach(白化)before dying. Other corals do not bleach but die directly.” He went on, “Our findings are significant because this survival strategy was only known from fossil corals that existed hundreds of millions of years ago. It is the first time that it has been found in a living coral. Thanks to our findings, we know now that some corals are able to recover, but unfortunately this is not enough in the currentclimate change context.” For their research, Kersting and Linares monitored 243 colonies of the endangered reef-building coral Cladocoracaespitosa in Spain’s Columbretes Islands Marine Reserve over 16 years. The monitoring revealed that Cladocoracaespitosa in the Mediterranean uses rejuvenescence to cope with warming events. This process involves the polyps — or the individual coral animals in a colony—shrinking inward and abandoning their skeletons(骨骼)during warm periods, before rejuvenating at a later point. “What happens is that some polyps in a coral colony—sometimes just one—reduces completely its dimensions and partially retreats from its skeleton,”Kersting said. “Once the stressful event is over, the shrunken or rejuvenated polyp recovers its size and builds up a new skeleton. Eventually, it begins to reproduce itself through budding and begins to cover the deadcolony surfaces.” He continued, “The results were very surprising because I started to observe colonies that were dead years ago, that were showing living parts many years after their death.” 32. What is the greatest threat to corals now ? A. Overfishing. B. Climate change. C. City growth. D. Light pollution. 33. What can we learn about the survival strategy? A. It was found for the first time. B. It is the cause of warming events. C. It represents the evolution of the corals. D It will bring hope for the endangered corals. 34. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. How the extreme corals forms. B. How the research was conducted. C. How the polyps survive their competitors. D. How the coral species manages to recover and regrow. 35. What is the purpose for the author to write the passage? A. To entertain. B. To persuade. C. To inform. D. To complain. 第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 With more people concerned about the environment, you can expect to see many more electric vehicles( EVs电动汽车) on the road in future. ___36___ Drivers say there are a few things to get used to when switching to a vehicle powered by electricity. First of all, there’s no clutch (离合器). Instead, drivers use a simple selector to put EVs in park, drive, and reverse. Since they’re powered by electricity, EVs also apply full power as soon as the driver hits the accelerator (加速器). ___37___ Also, EVs slow down as soon as the driver lifts their foot off the accelerator. Drivers end up using their brakes much less. ___38___ The most obvious is that EVs don’t rely on gas. This means drivers of electric cars don’t need to stop at the gas station—in the long run, this can save a great deal of money. EVs are also low maintenance (维护). For example, they don’t need oil changes. ___39___ This is likely because of the placement of the battery, which sits just below the seats. This helps keep the vehicle’s center of gravity low. Of course, there are also disadvantages. Most EVs can drive over 200 miles on one full charge. ___40___ With limited charging stations in many areas, this could cause problems on long trips. Additionally, the batteries are expensive to replace. Finally, while EVs may save drivers’ money on gas and maintenance in the long run, the price of buying an EV is often higher than that of a gas-powered vehicle. A. There are many benefits of owning an EV. B. At that point, though, they need to be recharged. C. Many drivers also report that EVs feel more secure. D. This may help them speed up faster than gas-powered cars. E. As the name suggests, electric vehicles rely on electricity alone. F. Many people prefer EVs because they can reduce their stress. G. So what is it like to drive an electric vehicle instead of a gas-powered car? 第三部分 完形填空(共15小题,每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. For me, the Easter holidays were so boring that it was impossible to find something fun to do. My mom had suggested that I do some studies since the promotion test was coming up. However, I didn’t follow my mother’s suggestion. Instead, I went outside to seek out my friends to play with. When I had successfully contacted some of my friends, none of them seemed to be much in a playful mood, but one friend Jimmy agreed to play with me. He suggested we go down to the river and just relax there. The river was not far from my home, and we arrived there quickly. Just relaxing on the river bank with nothing but some waste logs, it wasn’t fun for us at first. Clearly what was on our minds was to jump into the river and just take a swim in the clear cool water. So we took off our clothes down to our underwear and walked into the shallow part of the water. The water was truly cool and refreshing and we were starting to have fun then, playing and laughing, as we splashed the cool water onto each other’s faces. Then we started to chase each other around on the river bank and then we ran straight into the river. We were having so much fun that we didn’t notice danger was around the corner. Before Jimmy could know it, and before he could do anything to keep his balance, he lost his footing on a tree branch, which was in the shallow part of the water, and slipped, bringing his whole entire body into the deep water. He tried to resurface from the water but found it extremely hard to keep his head above the water. 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 I was scared to see him struggling in the water but I knew I must rescue him. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After a while, Jimmy recovered from panic and thanked my mom and the neighbors. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2023—2024 学年第二学期高二年期末质量检测 英语学科试卷 (完卷时间120分钟;满分150分) 第 Ⅰ 卷 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 What did Ken probably expect to do? 【答案】24. A 25. D 26. B 27. Additionally researchers at Australia’s RMIT University have recently released a study showing that adding coffee grounds instead of sand to concrete could make it much stronger, reducing both the amount of sand used, as well as the amount of concrete that would need to be used in the final product. A. To promote an alternative to concrete. B. To advocate environmental protection. C. To introduce new ways to produce concrete. D. To emphasize the significance of creativity. 【答案】28. C 29. B 30. D 31. The findings represent some rare good news for corals around the worldwhich are facing numerous severe threats—most notably, climate change. 【答案】32. B 33. D 34. D 35. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】I was scared to see him struggling in the water but I knew I must rescue him. I took a deep breath to keep calm. Looking around, I found a waste log, I threw it to him immediately and asked him to hold it and not to give up. At the same time I yelled for help, hoping someone could come to our rescue. Luckily, my mom heard my cries, rushed out of the house and raced towards us. She jumped into the water and reached out her hands to pull him. Several neighbors also quickly joined the rescue. They managed to get Jimmy out of the water. Finally, Jimmy was saved, pale and shivering. After a while, Jimmy recovered from panic and thanked my mom and the neighbors. We hugged each other in tears. I thought my mom would scold me. But she just held us in her arms tightly. She warned us it was dangerous to swim in the river. Both of us felt ashamed and promised never to do that again. This was really a special Easter, one I would never forget. For Jimmy, he had a narrow escape from drowning. For me, I felt the kindness of my neighbors. 词汇激活 行为类 ①放弃:give up/abandon ②大叫:yell/shout ③拥抱:hug/embrace 情绪类 ①感到羞愧:feel ashamed/feel abashed ②冷静的:calm/dispassionate 【点睛】[高分句型1].
