Hand gestures mean different things in different countries. Some gestures may even get you in trouble in foreign countries if you don’t know them well. So maybe it is best to keep your hands in your pockets when travelling.
There are many kinds of hand gestures, here are some we usually use.
People in most countries such as Canada and the USA use a thumbs-up (翘拇指) to agree about something. But it may be unfriendly in some countries and shouldn’t be used at all in Iran, Iraq and Thailand.
What does making a circle with your thumb and index finger (食指) mean? In many countries, it means OK. That is not the only meaning,it usually means “zero” rather than OK in Australia. And in Japan, it usually means money.
Don’t try to call someone to you by using this gesture of your index finger. It may mean “come here” in the USA. But it is an unfriendly hand gesture in most parts of the world. There are places where this could even get you in trouble!
You have to worry about the “V” for winning sign. If you use it, you should keep your palm (手掌) facing away from you. If you turn your palm towards you, you’ll be thought to be unfriendly.

There is a large forest called Saihanba in Hebei Province. It is famous for the “beautiful highlands (高地)”.
During the Qing Dynasty (清朝), this green Great Wall was a royal hunting land (皇家狩猎场) because of its cool summer weather and beautiful plants.
However, most of the area had turned into a desert by the end of the Qing Dynasty. In the1950s, this desert had fewer and fewer green plants or grass there. The wind only blew sand from this northern desert into Beijing.
In the early 1960s, over 350 foresters came to this area to fight the desert. They were asked to plant trees in Saihanba. Few people, including the foresters, when they found the 200-year-old tree standing alone in the wind, they knew if one tree could live here, millions of trees would be here.
After years of hard work, three generations (世代) of the foresters have increased forest cover from 11% to 80%. The forest now provides 137,000 cubic meters (立方米) of clean water for Beijing and Tianjin each year.
“In the 55 years, people have been growing trees and ______,” said Liu Haiying (主任) of Saihanba Forest Farm.
“I believe that, as long as we go on promoting ecological civilization (推动生态文明), year after year, China can make more green miracles (奇迹) like Saihanba and own harmony (和谐) between humans (人类) and nature.”

Have you ever seen vegetables growing in balconies, rooftops (屋顶) and window boxes around your neighborhood? China’s natural environment is good for vegetables’ growth. It has more than 160 kinds of vegetables, they will grow vegetables.
Also, Chinese scientists have built vegetable greenhouses in Antaretic (南极洲) research stations (莴苣), such as the Kunlun Station. They use the greenhouses to grow cucumbers and lettuce.
In 2016, Chinese astronauts successfully planted lettuce on the Shenzhou XI spacecraft. Lettuce there grows upward, just like it does on the earth. But this lettuce grew taller and greener, according to Jing Haipeng, the astronaut who planted it.
China was also open to foreign vegetables. For example, during the Western Han Dynasty, Zhang Qian, brought back carrots, garlic and other vegetables. During the Ming Dynasty, peppers, tomatoes and more vegetables were brought into China. China has a long history of planting vegetables. The Book of Songs (《诗经》) mentions many kinds of vegetables. China was also open to foreign vegetables. For example, during the Western Han Dynasty, Zhang Qian, who went to the Western Regions, brought back carrots, garlic and other vegetables. During the Ming Dynasty, potatoes, peppers, tomatoes and more vegetables were brought into China.
Chinese people are good at turning vegetables into delicious dishes. Take eggplants for example. In the West, people often grill them, which means cooking them over a fire without a pot. But Chinese people might stir-fry (炒) or steam them.
Planting vegetables brings more than just food. It also brings joy and peace. Poets like Tao Yuanming lived in the countryside and did farm work like planting vegetables. Perhaps, some Chinese people still hope to live a simple life in the country.
