Hai became the third Chinese winner of the Hugo Award, following sci-fi writers Liu Cixin and Hao Jingfang. The Space-Time Painter was published in 2022. It was inspired by the life experience of the talented Chinese painter Wang Ximeng during the Northern Song period, who created the 12-meter-long painting One Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains.* It tells a story about the political power struggle of the time combined with different elements (元素) such as traditional Chinese culture, history, deduction (推理) and science fiction. In this story, Hai did his best to balance the relationship between the story, characters and history, hoping to bring readers a good work. Hai, also a financial worker, thinks himself more of a sci-fi fan than a writer. "I write while doing my job, so I have very little time to write every day," he said. I'm going to make the world map that I've always dreamed of," he says. From his home in Melbourne, Thomas began his artistic journey in Alaska, drawing a grizzly bear with a mouthful of salmon in colored pencil. Three years later, his Wild World map was finished. The map shows 1,642 animal species (物种). Thomas had three rules for choosing species to draw: they had to be wild, native, and currently(当前)living. "It's a celebration of the nature that we still have," says Thomas. "There is plenty of very bad news to look at about the ecology(生态)of this planet. But I want people---especially the next generation---to know that there's still so much to protect." During the expedition(探险)of drawing the map Wild World, Thomas had the chance to explore nature in distant locations. He saw monkeys in the Amazon that look strange and deep-sea fishes that look terrible. One of the fishes he discovered was the giant oarfish, which seems like a huge sea snake.* All the weird and wonderful species on the map are listed in an accompanying(随附的)booklet. The map itself gave up political borders, roads and cities to focus only on nature. "Mountains, deserts, forests, ice, ocean and millions of species---of which we are but one. It's a map of nature, rather than nations," Thomas said. Labelled geographical features make the map not just an artwork, but a resource. This is also part of Thomas' idea: using art to draw people in. 9.What did Thomas do to get rid of being stuck at home? A. He started his artistic journey. B. He studied animals across the world. C.
