If you are a painting lover, you shouldn’t miss the following four famous masterpieces which have stood the test of time.
The Arnolfini Portrait
Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait, an oil painting on wood produced in 1434, in which a man and a woman hold hands with a window behind him and a bed behind her, is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces in the National Gallery, London. This painting is as visually interesting as it is famed. It is also an informative document in fifteenth-century society, through Van Eyck’s heavy use of symbolism — while husbands went out to engage in business, wives concerned themselves with domestic duties.
The Starry Night
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night, oil on canvas, a moderately abstract landscape painting of an expressive night sky over a small hillside village, during his 12-month stay at the mental hospital near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France between 1889 and 1890. When the Museum of Modern Art in New York City purchased the painting from a private collector in 1941, it was not well known, but it has since become one of Van Gogh’s most famous works.
The Harvesters
The Harvesters is an oil painting on wood completed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565. It depicts the harvest time which most commonly occurs within the months of August and September. Nicolaes Jonghelinck, a merchant banker and art collector from Antwerp, commissioned this painting. The painting has been at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City since 1919.
Guernica
Guernica, a large black-and-white oil painting, was painted by the Cubist Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso in 1937. The title “Guernica” refers to the city that was bombed by Nazi planes during the Spanish Civil War. The painting depicts the horrors of war and as a result, has come to be an anti-war symbol and a reminder of the tragedies of war. Today, the painting is housed at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofaí in Madrid.

Would you take a trip if you couldn’t use your cellphone? A new tour company called Off the Grid is asking travellers to put their cellphones away and not even use them for photos. The company founder, Zach Beattie, is developing his business, using money he saved from a tech job at a mapping company. He’s hired guides for every trip but will help lead the first few himself.
The first trip is to Lisbon, Portugal, in July. It takes 7 to 10 days, with small groups of up to 16 people. Prices range from $1,500 to $1,650, including accommodations, meals and ground transportation. The plan includes at least three excursions (远足) and two social events, with an emphasis on unique experiences over bucket-list sightseeing. The tour also includes surfing lessons, yoga on the beach, a day of sailing and dinner with a local family.
“When you’re somewhere new, there’s a lot to see and a lot of cool and interesting people to meet,” Beattie said. “Your phone can distract (使分心) you.” The phone ban won’t be enforced quite as strictly as it seems at first glance. “We want it to be voluntary,” he said. “We’re not collecting phones and throwing them in a locked trunk. It’s held by you, but put in your pocket, and you state your intentions for the week, whether that’s checking your social media once or twice a day or a total blackout.”
Tour-goers also get a “dumbphone” without Internet access that’s loaded with numbers for group leaders and other participants, both for emergencies and to promote socializing. Participants may bring regular cameras, but Beattie is hiring a photographer for each tour so there will be plenty of photos to remember the trip. Once the trip is over, participants will have access to those photos for use in social media posts.
4. What can be learned about Zach Beattie?
A. He set up his business at his own expense.
B. He is always guiding every trip personally.
C. He forbids tourists to take along cellphones.
D. He used to earn his living in a tour company.
5. What do we know about the Lisbon trip?
A. The trip features sightseeing.
B Participants live in homestays.
C. Air ticket is covered in the cost.
D. Tourists experience water sports.
6. What does Zach Beattie expect the participants to do?
A. Lock their phones in a trunk.
B. Post their photos on social media.
C. Free themselves from their phones.
D. Shift their focus onto dumbphones.
7. What can tour-goers do with the dumbphone?
A. Take photos. B. Access the Internet.
C. Record the trip. D. Contact group members.
C
We live in an era, where a vast ocean of information is available immediately, and the question arises: can one learn too much? Because no individual can grasp the entirety of human knowledge. However, there exists a phenomenon where too much learning can lead to inaction, a state of being flooded with too much information.
Consider a situation where you’re eager to achieve a particular goal. You begin by conducting lots of research, diving deep into the subject. As you absorb more information, it paradoxically (矛盾地) feels like your understanding weakens. Each new concept or strategy reveals further layers, making the goal seem more complicated and out of reach.
This situation is a common trap: the endless pursuit of more information. Although gaining comprehensive knowledge is valuable, that is to say there’s nothing wrong with learning a lot, issues arise when this pursuit affects practical application. If learning continuously prevents you from starting, you’ll find yourself stuck, unable to achieve your desired outcomes.
A more effective approach to achieving goals is to strike a balance between learning and doing. Gather necessary information and then shift into action quickly, even if you feel somewhat unprepared. This is often the best way to learn, as hands-on experience provides insights that theoretical knowledge alone cannot.
The comparison with a baby learning to walk is a good example here. A baby doesn’t learn to walk by sitting and analyzing the process. Instead, it learns by attempting to walk, falling, and then understanding from each fall what works and what doesn’t. Through repeated effort, walking is eventually mastered. This method applies to goal achievement too. By engaging in action, learning from the outcomes, and adjusting accordingly, you gradually move closer to your goals.
In summary, while the pursuit of knowledge is valuable, it’s crucial not to let it become a barrier to action. Learning should be a stepping stone to doing, not an end in itself. It’s through the interaction of gathering knowledge and applying it that we can truly progress towards our ambitions.
8. What stops people from achieving the goal?
A. The confusion caused by too much information. B. The inability to find relevant information.
C. The distraction caused by unrelated tasks. D. The desire to learn basic concepts or strategies.
9. How do you achieve goals effectively according to the text?
A. Sticking to continuous learning. B. Gaining as much knowledge as possible.
C. Taking practical action without delay. D. Focusing more on theoretical knowledge.
10. Why is the example “baby learning to walk” mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. To compare different learning styles.
B. To illustrate learning through action and experience.
C. To show the significance of making mistakes.
D. To emphasize the necessity for parental guidance.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Process of Absorbing Information B. The Harmony of Learning and Doing
C. The Pursuit of Advanced Knowledge D. The importance of Hands-on Experience
D
Designers are increasingly using different kinds of materials to produce products that do not harm the environment. Reused plastic bottles wood, plant fiber, and even seaweed are being used in place of traditional materials for household goods and clothing.
Nina Edwards Anker’s electronic lights look like ancient pieces of paper placed around LEDs. But a closer look shows that they are made of algae (海藻). Anker came up with the idea while working on a doctoral research project at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. She wants to find ways to mix design ideas with production and supply methods that do not use up resources.
Heimtextil is an international trade show for new textiles (纺织品) in Frankfurt, Germany. This year’s show placed attention on making new products that came from reused materials. Olaf Schmidt, vice president of textile technology, said, “We’ll see companies bespeaking how materials like nylon, plastic and metal can be reused—for example, carpet tiles (方块地砖) that can be reused at the end of their life as materials for new tiles.”
Fashion industry expert Veronika Lipar described the field’s most important change—a move to sustainability (持续性). She said, “The industry is trying to reduce ‘effect’ on the environment and no longer be the biggest polluter.”
Patagonia, North Face and Timberland are among the companies now using natural materials to produce goods. Italian company Frumat has developed a plant-based leather made from the waste created by apple juice makers. Two Mexican developers, Adrian Lopez Velarde and Marte Cazarez, have created a leather using cactus (仙人掌) leaves. Cactuses interest new material developers because they can live in hot climates and poor soil. Meanwhile, Pinatex helps support farms in the Philippines by using waste from the pineapple harvest to create material that is sold to makers of shoes, clothing and other products.
12. Why are Nina Edwards Anker’s electronic lights made of algae?
A. To save resources. B. To cut down the costs.
C. To improve the lights’ quality. D. To produce more electronic lights.
13. What does the underlined word “bespeaking” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Responding. B. Predicting. C. Refusing. D. Displaying.
14. What do Veronika Lipar’s words suggest?
A. Fashion industry is not satisfying people’s demands.
B. Fashion industry does great harm to the environment.
C. Fashion industry uses lots of environment-friendly materials.
D. Fashion industry has been developing too fast over the years.
15. How does the author mainly develop the text?
A. By making comparisons. B. By providing examples.
C. By listing data and analyzing them. D. By asking questions and answering them.

American football can be pretty competitive. From old opponents to fan drama, it’s just another part of the game. There have even been all-out violent fights in the name of defending your team. However, one high school football player Mario Hoefer showed that his love for the sport didn’t take priority over helping a person in need.
One afternoon in September, Charles City High School football team Mario was on faced nearby New Hampton in a Friday football game. Mario was captain of his team and Carter the quarterback of the opposing team.
It was really foggy and awfully hot. Filled with excited audience in the stands, the stadium felt like a heated steamer. Every player was we win sweat even during the warm-ups. All this meant the game would be a tough one and a test or the mind and body of both teams.
Soon the game began and for the first three quarters, each team seemed to have a chance to win and they took the lead by turns. So exhausted was Mario running back and forth that he cramped (抽筋) up twice. Each time he got a cramp near the New Hampton sideline, his teammates came to his assistance and stretched his leg to ease the cramp. Though feeling uncomfortable and worn out, Mario soldiered on as Charles City protected a slim lead and New Hampton attempted a late comeback.
In the fourth quarter, Mario saw his teammates across the field break up a crucial pass intended for Carter. Mario was about to cross over to the other side of the field to high five his teammates when he noticed that beside him, Carter fell onto the ground, screaming in pain, his eyes wide open and a look of panic on his face. Carter grabbed his left calf (小腿肚), trying to move his leg in different positions. Judging from Carter’s desperate expression, Mario realized Carter was possibly experiencing an unbearable cramp just as he himself had gone through minutes before. But the New Hampton players were farther away from the quarterback.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Mario knew what to do next.

B. Participants live in homestays.
A 5. D 6. C 7. D

根据文章第一段中“A new tour company called Off the Grid is asking travellers to put their cellphones away and not even use them for photos. The company founder, Zach Beattie, is developing his business, using money he saved from a tech job at a mapping company. (一家名为Off the Grid的新旅游公司要求游客把手机收起来,甚至不要用手机拍照。该公司的创始人扎克·比蒂(Zach Beattie)正在用他在一家地图公司从事技术工作攒下的钱发展自己的业务。)”可知,Zach Beattie用之前工作省下来的钱自己出钱创办自己的旅游公司,名为Off the Grid。故选A。
根据第二段最后一句“The tour also includes surfing lessons, yoga on the beach, a day of sailing and dinner with a local family.(行程还包括冲浪课程、海滩瑜伽、一天的帆船航行以及与当地家庭共进晚餐。)”
根据第三段中““When you’re somewhere new, there’s a lot to see and a lot of cool and interesting people to meet,” Beattie said. “Your phone can distract (使分心) you.” (‘当你到了一个新的地方,你会看到很多东西,会遇到很多很酷很有趣的人。’贝蒂说:‘你的手机会让你分心。’)”以及““We want it to be voluntary,” he said. “We’re not collecting phones and throwing them in a locked trunk. It’s held by you, but put in your pocket, and you state your intentions for the week, whether that’s checking your social media once or twice a day or a total blackout.”(‘我们希望这是自愿的,’他说:‘我们不会收集手机,然后把它们扔进锁着的后备箱。你拿着它,但把它放在口袋里,你陈述你一周的意图,无论是每天查看一两次社交媒体还是完全不上网。’)”可知,贝蒂希望参与者能够远离手机,把自己从手机中解放出来,因为手机会让人分心、会错过旅途中遇到的人和风景,但是不会收手机并把手机锁在后备箱里。故选C。

You begin by conducting lots of research diving deep into the subject.
A 9. C 10. B 11. B

根据第一段中“However, there exists a phenomenon where too much learning can lead to inaction, a state of being flooded with too much information. (然而,有一种现象是,太多的学习可能导致无所作为,一种被太多信息淹没的状态)”可知,信息过多造成的混乱会阻碍人们实现目标。故选A项。
根据第四段中“Gather necessary information and then shift into action quickly, even if you feel somewhat unprepared. This is often the best way to learn, as hands-on experience provides insights that theoretical knowledge alone cannot. (收集必要的信息,然后迅速采取行动,即使你觉得有些措手不及。这通常是最好的学习方式,因为实践经验提供了理论知识无法提供的见解)”可知,通过毫不拖延地采取实际行动,你可以有效地实现目标。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“A baby doesn’t learn to walk by sitting and analyzing the process. Instead, it learns by attempting to walk, falling, and then understanding from each fall what works and what doesn’t. Through repeated effort, walking is eventually mastered. (婴儿不是通过坐着和分析走路的过程来学习走路的。相反,它通过尝试走路和摔倒来学习,然后从每次跌倒中了解什么有用,什么没用。通过反复的努力,最终学会了走路)”可知,婴儿学习走路的例子充分体现了在尝试中吸取经验,再反复尝试,最终实现目标的模式。由此推知,作者举这个例子是为了展示通过行动和经验来学习。故选B项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第四段中“A more effective approach to achieving goals is to strike a balance between learning and doing. (实现目标更有效的方法是在学习和实践之间取得平衡)”和最后一段中“Learning should be a stepping stone to doing, not an end in itself. It’s through the interaction of gathering knowledge and applying it that we can truly progress towards our ambitions.

Designers are increasingly using different kinds of materials to produce products that do not harm the environment. Reused plastic bottles, wood, plant fiber, and even seaweed are being used in place of traditional materials for household goods and clothing.
13 What does the underlined word “bespeaking” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Responding. B. Predicting. C. Refusing. D. Displaying.
A 13. D 14. B 15. B

This year’s show placed attention on making new products that came from reused materials.(Heimtextil是在德国法兰克福举行的新纺织品国际贸易展。
根据第四段“Fashion industry expert Veronika Lipar described the field’s most important change—a move to sustainability (持续性). She said, “The industry is trying to reduce ‘effect’ on the environment and no longer be the biggest polluter.”(时尚产业专家Veronika Lipar描述了该领域最重要的变化——向可持续发展的转变。她说:“该行业正在努力减少对环境的‘影响’,不再是最大的污染者。”)”可推知,维罗妮卡·利帕尔的话暗示了时尚产业对环境危害很大。故选B。

Mario knew what to do next. He bent over to check Carter. Having made sure Carter was indeed merely experiencing a cramp, he knelt down on the ground and held his left foot, pulling it towards himself to relieve Carter’s pain. Meanwhile, he comforted Carter," Take it easy, bro. You’ll be all right soon." Gradually, Carter’s panicked and painful expression began to soften. When his teammates and trainer made it to him, he had recovered. Carter rose to his feet, giving Mario a big hug to express his heartfelt gratitude. The game continued, nobody realizing the moment had been captured by a viewer in the stands.
The photo was posted on social media. Surprisingly, it received a flood of supportive responses. Thousands of netizens sang high praise for Mario’s act of kindness. Many thought what he did showed the true sportsmanship on the field and that the world needed to see more of such touching pictures. Mario didn’t expect his instinctive action would arouse such a big reaction, saying modestly," It was no big deal to step in to stretch Carter’s leg out. It was more like a brotherly thing to help him out." Mario and Carter, the two former opponents, have since become sincere friends, whose story convinces people of the true spirit of sports.
