His wife, Penny Merritt said her husband’s doctor suggested he get more exercise after he had some heart trouble about 12 years ago. When their son, Kevin brought a bike to his parents’ house, AI started to pedal around the local road and hills. At first, his rides were about five miles long, then 10 to 12 miles, and gradually the length of his outings grew due to all the social stops — from an hour to two hours. Since 2010, Merritt has been on a personal pursuit to cycle the circumference (周长) of the earth — 24,901 miles without even leaving his own neighbourhood. As a result, over the years, he got to know many of his neighbours and send them message of love and kindness. Judy Keene, one of his neighbours, has been waving to Merritt on his daily rides for the past five years. “He is so reliable, like clockwork. Every day I see him flying by on his bike. He is totally cheerful and takes time with everybody,” Keene said. “He inspires so many people and shows everyone how you can be in your 80s and still have a good time.” It was not until October 24 that the old man finally realized his daily bicycle trips were as important to them as they were to him. At 3 p.m. that Sunday afternoon, nearly 200 people gathered near his home to surprise and congratulate him on the completion of his “round-the-world” adventure. As he pedaled down the hill towards his house, a roar erupted from the crowd waving international flags, hand-painted signs and Earth-shaped balloons. The outpouring of love stunned and overwhelmed Merritt. “It’s just unbelievable. I couldn’t have imagined anything like this ever happening” he said. Although Merritt has now accomplished his cycling goal, he has no plans to change the routine that has become the highlight of his daily life. 4. Why did old AI Merritt start to cycle? A. He has always been an athletic person. B. His son Kevin brought him a new bike. C. He wanted to send love and kindness to others. D. He was advised to work out for the sake of his health. 5. The underlined phrase “social stops” in the second paragraph probably means ________. A. Merritt stopped to help those in need B. Merritt tried to help build stops for social use C. Merritt had interactions with his neighbours D. Merritt was stopped for some social reasons 6. What can we learn about AI Merritt in the text? A. His trips mattered more to his neighbours than to him. B. He was warmly congratulated on his completion of the plan. C. He will keep on cycling on a different route as he has planned. D. He accomplished his goal of cycling 24,901 miles around the earth. 7. Which of the following can best describe AI Merritt? A. Diligent and determined. B. Optimistic and selfless. C. Ambitious and romantic. D. Kind and inspirational. D 5. C 6. B 7. 根据文章第二段“His wife, Penny Merritt said her husband’s doctor suggested he get more exercise after he had some heart trouble about 12 years ago.”(他的妻子Penny Merritt说,他的医生建议他在大约12年前有些心脏问题后多做运动。) 根据文章第二段“At first, his rides were about five miles long, then 10 to 12 miles, and gradually the length of his outings grew due to all the social stops — from an hour to two hours.”(起初,他的骑行时间大约是5英里,然后是10到12英里,由于所有的social stops,他的骑行时间逐渐从一个小时增加到两个小时。)以及第三段“As a result, over the years, he got to know many of his neighbours and send them message of love and kindness.”(因此,多年来,他认识了许多邻居,并向他们传递了爱和善良的信息。) 根据倒数第二段“At 3 p.m. that Sunday afternoon, nearly 200 people gathered near his home to surprise and congratulate him on the completion of his “round-the-world” adventure.”(那个星期天下午3点,近200人聚集在他家附近,为他完成“环球”冒险而惊喜和祝贺。) 根据文章第三段“As a result, over the years, he got to know many of his neighbours and send them message of love and kindness.”(因此,多年来,他认识了许多邻居,并向他们传递了爱和善良的信息。)以及根据第四段“He inspires so many people and shows everyone how you can be in your 80s and still have a good time.”(他激励了很多人,向所有人展示了你可以在80多岁的时候仍然过得很开心。”) D。 C Adults perform better when they have a lot to gain or lose. But scientists did not know whether teens did too. To find out, Insel asked 88 people between the ages of 13 and 20. She had them try a game. The participants looked at pictures of planets on a computer screen. They had to click as fast as they could when they saw a planet with designs. They were not supposed to click if a planet had no designs. The participants could earn 20 cents for right answers but lose 10 cents for wrong ones. In other sessions, they’d get a dollar for right answers, and lose a half dollar for wrong ones. Players of all ages wanted to win the money, and cared more about bigger rewards than smaller ones. As Insel expected, adults performed better when the stakes were high. But teens 13 to 18 played just as well whether they stood to win 20 cents or a dollar. Only 19- or 20-year olds stepped up their game for the higher stakes. Insel’s team published this work November 28, 2017, in Nature Communications. Brains change and mature during adolescence. And not all parts grow at the same rate. Insel was interested in two areas in particular. One is deep inside the brain and just above the ears. Called the ventral striatum (腹侧纹状体), it helps the brain calculate rewards. The ventral striatum becomes mature during the teen years. The brain’s prefrontal cortex (前额叶) takes longer to mature. This area is important for planning and setting goals. It may not mature until early adulthood. Nerve pathways - think of them as the brain’s “wiring” - connect the ventral striatum and prefrontal cortex. This lets the two regions communicate to make decisions. But because the prefrontal cortex matures later, the wiring between the two may not be complete until adulthood. 8. Which of the following can explain Insel’s research? A. Teens ignore key points in many aspects. B. Adults behave better with higher rewards. C. Teens give more attention to exams than usual work. D. Adults behave more maturely than children in every way. 9. What does the underlined word “stakes” refer to? A. The final results of games or experiments. B. The things that can be gained or lost in races. C. The ambitions or energies that one experiences in games. D. The powers that make one feel less pressure or pain. 10. From the passage, we can know ___________. A. the experiment aims to find out adults’ behaviour facing high stakes B. teens have better performances in the first rounds C. adults care less about the experiment at first D. adults and teens show differently with high stakes 11. Which is the best title of the passage? A. Unlike adults, teens don’t perform better with high stakes B. Who perform better, adults or children? C. Stakes are the key points in promoting one’s passion D. Whether low stakes or high stakes, one behaves similarly 【答案】8. B 9. B 10. D 11. Only 19- or 20-year olds stepped up their game for the higher stakes.(当提高筹码时,只有19岁或者20岁地孩子在游戏中表现更好)可推知,18岁的成年人在筹码增大时,表现更好。 根据上文可知,stakes在此处指实验中提到的earn 20 cents for right answers but lose 10 cents for wrong ones(正确答案赚20美分,错误答案损失10美分)和get a dollar for right answers, and lose a half dollar for wrong ones.(正确答案得到1美元,错误答案损失0.5美元。) But teens 13 to 18 played just as well whether they stood to win 20 cents or a dollar. Only 19- or 20-year olds stepped up their game for the higher stakes. A。 D Pride and Prejudice for the Modern Woman Let us imagine how Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen’s most famous work, might be updated, 200 years on. Austen’s popularity is rooted in her intelligence. But today she would certainly have had a very different life, as would her characters. Here’s my own suggestion. It is a truth finally and universally acknowledged that a single woman with brains deserves to have equal opportunities to men, however disadvantaged she may feel by sexism. “My dear husband,” said his hopeful wife one day, “have you heard that the local store, standing empty for so long, is taken over by a bright young businesswoman?” Her dull and indifferent (漠不关心的) husband replied that he had not. “But it is, it is,” she replied excitedly. Mr Dull-Husband made no reply. “Don’t you want to know her plans?” she cried with some impatience. “Well clearly you think it matters to your silly little head... so I’d better listen.” “Well, my dear, the rumour (传言) is that she has already set up a string of successful businesses in northern England, though how a woman can know anything about that is beyond me. She will move in herself next month.” “What is her name?” “Bingley.” “Is she married or single?” “What a question! And none of your business. But her coming will be a fine thing for our five boys.” “How so? How can it possibly affect them?” “My dear love; those lazy boys need something to wake them up. There are bound to be jobs going.” “Is that her point in settling here? Surely as a woman she has simply taken a fancy to the place.” “Nonsense, my love, how little you’ve noticed the world has changed. She’s got a first-rate degree and some sort of business qualification, I’m told. She surely needs one of our boys! Perhaps you might give her a call.” “Me? No. Perhaps you can take an interest. You still have your looks, after all. She may even offer you a job.” “Oh, that’s not likely. These new chances belong to the younger generation. But now you mention it, I think I’ll go along all the same.” And Mrs Bennet went along. That was 10 years ago. She is now managing director of a FTSE-listed company. ...It would remain the case, of course, that Mrs Bennet would be one of very few women on the company board, that her salary would be lower than her male colleagues, her bonus of a more “female” dimension and her lifespan (年限) among the city’s business leaders shorter than theirs. Still, she’d no doubt have enjoyed Davos — and might even have hobnobbed (攀谈) with influential figures. 12. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. Austen was born 200 years ago. B. Austen rewrote Pride and Prejudice. C. Austen’s success lies in her wisdom. D. Austen’s updated work gains popularity. 13. The underlined part in the passage suggests that Mrs Bennet ____. A. had mixed feelings of admiration and surprise about Bingley B. felt kind of worried and doubtful about Bingley C. was extremely anxious to meet Bingley D. had a great curiosity about Bingley 14. In the eyes of Mrs Bennet, Bingley surely needed one of their boys to ____. A. get married to B. work for her C. help her move in D. take over her store 15. What does the writer intend to tell us? A. Women with brains can also be as successful as men. B. Women have to pay a high price for success. C. A judgment must be made free from prejudice. D. Sex discrimination still exists nowadays. C 13. A 14. B 15. 根据文章的第二段的“Austen’s popularity is rooted in her intelligence(奥斯汀的受欢迎源于她的智慧。)” 故选A项。 根据文章第十一段的“There are bound to be jobs going(肯定会有工作的)。”和倒数第四段的“She surely needs one of our boys!(她肯定需要我们家男孩子中的一个!)” 通读全文并结合文章最后一段中“It would remain the case, of course, Mrs Bennet would be one of very few women on the company board, that her salary would be lower than her male colleagues(当然,班纳特太太仍将是公司董事会中为数不多的女性之一,她的薪水将低于她的男同事)”可知,公司委员会的女性还是很少,Mrs Bennet的奖金还是比男性同事要少。 Soothe the Sunday scaries Most of us look forward to the weekend as a time to relax connect with friends and family, and deal with tasks from a to-do list that gets neglected during the workweek. B Every afternoon for the past 11 years, 83-year-old AI Merritt has been a reliable and cheery presence in his southeast Carlsbad neighbourhood, California. I couldn’t have imagined anything like this ever happening,” he said. Although Merritt has now accomplished his cycling goal, he has no plans to change the routine that has become the highlight of his daily life. 4. Why did old AI Merritt start to cycle? A. Ambitious and romantic. D. Kind and inspirational. C Adults perform better when they have a lot to gain or lose. Called the ventral striatum (腹侧纹状体) it helps the brain calculate rewards. C Teens give more attention to exams than usual work. Whether low stakes or high stakes, one behaves similarly D Pride and Prejudice for the Modern Woman Let us imagine how Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen’s most famous work, might be updated, 200 years on. “Well, clearly you think it matters to your silly little head... so I’d better listen.” “Well, my dear, the rumour (传言) is that she has already set up a string of successful businesses in northern England, though how a woman can know anything about that is beyond me. She will move in herself next month.” “What is her name?” “Bingley.” “Is she married or single?” “What a question! And none of your business But her coming will be a fine thing for our five boys.” “How so? Soothe the Sunday scaries Most of us look forward to the weekend as a time to relax, connect with friends and family, and deal with tasks from a to-do list that gets neglected during the workweek.
