At the time, I had practiced medicine in my home country, Cameroon, for over 20 years. A close friend advised me to join the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) program as a way to expand my experience in medicine, while traveling and volunteering in service of others. My remembrance of my sister’s illness made me decide right away that this was right for me. When I was younger, my sister developed a medical condition. She underwent two heart surgical operations and lots of suffering, but she survived and inspired me. She later asked me to consider a career in medicine to help other young girls. When this volunteering opportunity came up, I took it and became a volunteer in the UNV on 27 March 2008. I was recruited for the first volunteer assignment in Haiti. As a mother of seven-year-old twins, it was not easy for me to travel and leave them behind. But I did it with the support of my husband; who understood my motives and took good care of our children while I was working overseas. My volunteering journey took me involved in inpatient and outpatient services, medical evacuations and capacity building activities. These experiences were wide-ranging and led my career growth within the UNV. At first, my children didn’t want to study medicine. While in Cameroon, they saw me work long hours and weekends and come home tired. They found it challenging to accept the career that demanded a lot of their mother’s time. However, my children began to view medicine differently after I joined the UNV. They began to understand how important doctors are to crisis-affected communities and now see themselves in the lives we save. This is everything to me. 4. What drove the author to immediately engage in the program? A. A friend’s suggestion. B. Memory of sister’s disease. C. Traveling experiences. D. Medical practice in Cameroon. 5. Why did the author’s sister persuade her to work in medicine? A. To help her treat her illness. B. To become a volunteer of the UNV. C. To inspire her to make a good work choice. D. To give a hand to other young girls like her. 6. What difficulty did the author face when she volunteered in Haiti? A. She had to work overseas. B. She couldn’t attend her kids. C. She was separated from her husband. D. She did the first volunteer work in Haiti. 7. What can we know about the author’s children from the last paragraph? A. They disliked the study of medicine. B. They were deeply inspired by their mother. C. They complained about her constant absence. D. They became doctors and had saved many lives. B 5. D 6. B 7. 根据第一段中“My remembrance of my sister’s illness made me decide right away that this was right for me.(我对姐姐病情的记忆让我立刻做了这对我来说是正确的决定。)” 根据第二段中“She later asked me to consider a career in medicine to help other young girls.(后来她让我考虑从事医学事业来帮助其他年轻女孩。)” 根据第三段中“I was recruited for the first volunteer assignment in Haiti. As a mother of seven-year-old twins, it was not easy for me to travel and leave them behind.(我被招募到海地参加第一个志愿者任务。作为一对七岁双胞胎的母亲,我很难把他们留在身边)”可知,作者在海地做志愿者时遇到的困难是她无法照顾孩子。故选B。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“At first, my children didn’t want to study medicine. However, my children began to view medicine differently after I joined the UNV. They began to understand how important doctors are to crisis-affected communities and now see themselves in the lives we save.(起初,我的孩子们并不想学医。 B。 C When you look at the public maps of the seafloor, you can get the impression that the job of mapping the planet is over. However, far from it. Even these seemingly precise representations, often based on satellite estimates of ocean depths, are not particularly revealing. They’re rather like throwing a wet blanket over a table set for a fancy dinner party. You might see the outlines of a big table surrounded by a dozen chairs, perhaps some drinking glasses if the blanket’s really wet. But that’s about it. You wouldn’t see the plates, let alone what’s for dinner. Satellite data, in other words, only give a rough idea of what lies beneath the sea. That’s why exploration and mapping, and making the data open source, would be necessary for the betterment of all citizens, not just in economic terms but in opportunities for unexpected discoveries. In one way or another I’ve been exploring and mapping the ocean since 1967. In 2013 I mounted the latest multi-beam sonar (多波束声纳) on Nautilus, a large ship operated by the Ocean Exploration Trust, the nonprofit education and research organization I founded. The set of instruments can make highly accurate 3-D maps, detect if the seafloor is hard or soft, and can even discover oil and gas in the water column. One of our standout missions included surveys over natural gas seeps (渗漏) in the Gulf of Mexico, where Nautilus mapped the wreck (残骸) of the U-166, the only German U-boat known to be sunk during World War II. All in all, Nautilus has helped us map nearly 40,000 square miles of seafloor—a vast area the size of Kentucky, but a drop in the bucket compared with what’s left to do. Next year’s expeditions include trips south of the Equator for the first time, where the ocean covers more than 80 percent of the area and where few other explorers have ever been. 8. What can we infer from paragraph 2? A. It is not necessary to map the planet. B. There is a wet blanket on the dinner table. C. Satellite data give a general picture of the ocean. D. We know exactly what is happening under the sea. 9. What do we know about “Nautilus”? A. It has been to the Gulf of Mexico. B. It is operated by the author himself. C. It discovered a new type of marine life. D. It was originally built for military purposes. 10. What does the underlined phrase “a drop in the bucket” in paragraph 5 imply? A. Kentucky covers a big area. B. A lot of areas are still unmapped. C. Nautilus has made great contributions. D. The previous expeditions are insignificant. 11. What is probably the author? A. An official. B. A detective. C. An explorer. D. A businessman. C 9. A 10. B 11. 根据第二段“Satellite data, in other words, only give a rough idea of what lies beneath the sea.(换句话说,卫星数据只能大致了解海底的情况)”可知,卫星数据提供了海洋的大致情况。 根据第四段“One of our standout missions included surveys over natural gas seeps (渗漏) in the Gulf of Mexico, where Nautilus mapped the wreck (残骸) of the U-166, the only German U-boat known to be sunk during World War II.(我们的一项杰出任务包括调查墨西哥湾的天然气渗漏,Nautilus在那里绘制了U-166的残骸图,U-166是已知的唯一一艘在第二次世界大战期间沉没的德国U型潜艇)”可知,Nautilus去过墨西哥湾。故选A。 根据第五段“All in all, Nautilus has helped us map nearly 40,000 square miles of seafloor—a vast area the size of Kentucky, but a drop in the bucket compared with what’s left to do. Next year’s expeditions include trips south of the Equator for the first time, where the ocean covers more than 80 percent of the area and where few other explorers have ever been.(总而言之,Nautilus已经帮助我们绘制了近40000平方英里的海底地图,这是一个相当于肯塔基州大小的广阔区域,但与剩下的工作相比只是a drop in the bucket。明年的探险包括首次前往赤道以南,那里的海洋覆盖了80%以上的面积,几乎没有其他探险家去过)”可知,Nautilus已经绘制了近40000平方英里的海底地图,但还有极多的海洋面积几乎没有探险家去过,没有绘制过地图,推测划线短语表示“许多地区仍未绘制地图”。故选B。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“In one way or another I’ve been exploring and mapping the ocean since 1967. In 2013 I mounted the latest multi-beam sonar (多波束声纳) on Nautilus, a large ship operated by the Ocean Exploration Trust, the nonprofit education and research organization I founded.(自1967年以来,我一直在以某种方式探索和绘制海洋地图。2013年,我在Nautilus号上安装了最新的多波束声纳,这是一艘由我创立的非营利教育和研究组织海洋探索信托运营的大型船只)”可知,作者一直在探索和绘制海洋地图,由此可知,作者是一个探险家。故选C。 D In November 2020, Semantic Scholar introduced their new TLDR (Too Long Didn’t Read) feature. This AI-powered tool can shorten even the most complex computer science papers into a single-sentence summary, using natural language processing. If you’re a researcher, you might be considering how much time you could save by not having to map out evidence for a new topic. This new tool will finally allow you to shift your attention to the parts of your job that are more complex, analytical and social. At the same time, you are probably a little concerned that it could replace you or one of your colleagues. The last time it took a team of four researchers to review the evidence. Will it only require three or fewer researchers in the future? So will the impact of AI on the labour market be the same as “a new disease… namely, technological unemployment” warned by John Maynard Keynes? It seems too early to give this question an answer now. But we’ve learned from history the fact that previous technological waves did not cause massive job loss. Instead, they have led to transformations within the labour market and brought challenges that policymakers continue to deal with. Workers may need to re-skill or up-skill. This will help them to adapt to new ways of organizing tasks and the appearance of new ones. New skills will enable them to face potential job loss and manage transitions to new jobs. Policies and institutions can play a key role in ensuring that all workers can successfully handle a changing labour market. Even if AI increases the scale of the challenge, widens inequalities and brings new challenges for the work environment, policymakers should keep these lessons in mind to help workers ride the waves of technological change. 12. What can “TLDR” do according to the first two paragraphs? A Shift your attention. B. Find evidence of a case. C. Improve work efficiency. D. Help you write your paper. 13. Which statement will John Maynard Keynes probably agree with? A. Technological change will cause job loss. B. A new disease will lead to unemployment. C. Technological advancement can lead to diseases. D. The appearance of AI is a warning for humanity. 14. How can workers adapt to technological changes in the labor market? A. By finding more new jobs. B. By managing the labour market. C. By actively working with policy makers. D. By improving existing skills or learning new ones. 15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. The Advanced Features of TLDR B. New Development in AI Technology C. The Impact of AI on the Labour Market D. The Application of an AI-powered Tool 【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. 根据第一段中的“This AI-powered tool can shorten even the most complex computer science papers into a single-sentence summary, using natural language processing.(这款AI驱动的工具可以利用自然语言处理技术,将最复杂的计算机科学论文缩短为一句话的摘要。)”和第二段中的“This new tool will finally allow you to shift your attention to the parts of your job that are more complex, analytical and social.(这款新工具最终将使你能够将注意力转移到工作中更复杂、更分析性和社会性的部分。)” 根据第三段中的“So will the impact of AI on the labour market be the same as “a new disease… namely, technological unemployment” warned by John Maynard Keynes?(那么,人工智能对劳动力市场的影响是否会如同约翰·梅纳德·凯恩斯警告的那样,是一种新的疾病……即技术性失业?)”可知,John Maynard Keynes可能同意技术变革会导致失业的观点。故选A项。 根据第四段中的“Workers may need to re-skill or up-skill. This will help them to adapt to new ways of organizing tasks and the appearance of new ones. New skills will enable them to face potential job loss and manage transitions to new jobs.(工人可能需要重新学习技能或提升技能。 When life and work start to feel like each day is repeating itself, you may start thinking about traveling. Every time he sat down to solve a math problem, his mind would wander to playing with his building blocks (积木). One day, while others were listening to the math teacher, Jack was totally lost in his world of tiny buildings. Suddenly, a tap interrupted. Surprised, Jack saw the teacher’s stern look, his half-done creation showing a sign of his wandering mind. This did not happen once. His distraction in math was also evident in his homework, which was often filled with mistakes. When the midterm math exam arrived, Jack remained the same. However, upon receiving his paper from the math teacher, he was shocked to see a disappointing 58 staring back at him. What’s worse, the teacher required students to have their parents review and sign the test paper. Jack’s heart sank! He knew that his parents, especially his dad would be very upset. He spent hours figuring out what to do, trying to come up with a way to avoid their anger. With desperation and anxiety he finally came up with a risky plan. Late that night, he sneaked (潜入) into his parents’ room and carefully studied his father’s signature (签名). Nervously, he picked up his courage and pen and copied his father’s signature onto his math test paper. His hands trembled with fear and guilt, but he pushed those feelings aside, convincing himself that it was the only way to escape punishment. The next day, Jack handed in the test paper with the fake signature, feeling a mix of relief and anxiety. He hoped that his plan would work and that his parents would never find out the truth. Feeling guilty, he not only lost interest in playing with model blocks but also found it hard to look his math teacher in the eye. His math teacher sensed something wrong, so she called Jack’s father and both of them knew what had happened. When Jack returned home, his father was waiting for him in the living room. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next day, Jack came to the math teacher’s office. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 When Jack returned home, his father was waiting for him in the living room. His father looked at him with a mixture of disappointment and concern. Without a word, he handed Jack the test paper with the forged signature. “Son,” he began, his voice heavy, “we value honesty above all else in this family. We understand that you may struggle with subjects like math, but cheating and lying is not the answer.” Jack felt a wave of shame wash over him as he realized the gravity of his actions. His father continued, “Tomorrow, you will go to your teacher and explain what you did. We will face the consequences together.” The next day, Jack came to the math teacher’s office. His father accompanied him. His teacher, Mrs. Thompson, greeted them with a serious expression. Jack’s father explained the situation, and Jack, mustering all his courage, apologized to Mrs. Thompson for his dishonesty. She listened patiently, then said, “Jack, I appreciate your honesty now. Mistakes are part of learning, and we can’t grow without facing our challenges head-on. From now on, let’s work together to improve your math skills and restore your love for architecture through understanding numbers.” Jack nodded, grateful for her understanding and ready to start anew, determined to overcome his difficulties and earn his success honestly. 词汇激活 行为类 ①意识到:realize/be aware of ②继续:continue/go on ③提高:improve/enhance 情绪类 ①担忧:concern/worry ②感激的:grateful/thankful 【点睛】【高分句型1】Jack felt a wave of shame wash over him as he realized the gravity of his actions.(运用了as引导的时间状语从句) 【高分句型2】Tomorrow, you will go to your teacher and explain what you did.(运用了what引导的宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 中山市高二年级2023—2024学年度第二学期期末统一考试 英语试卷 本试卷共8页,三部分,满分120分。 A Here are four of the most iconic places worldwide. C When you look at the public maps of the seafloor, you can get the impression that the job of mapping the planet is over. A It has been to the Gulf of Mexico. D In November 2020, Semantic Scholar introduced their new TLDR (Too Long Didn’t Read) feature. A. Shift your attention. The Application of an AI-powered Tool When life and work start to feel like each day is repeating itself, you may start thinking about traveling. However, he was not a fan of math. With desperation and anxiety, he finally came up with a risky plan. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
