Hale, president of Granite Telecommunications, was onstage during Thursday’s rainy graduation ceremony to accept the medal for his support for the university. In his brief speech, he praised students for their hard work, and, drawing from his own early experiences, encouraged them not to let failure defeat them. Later, just as the headmaster was about to start awarding degrees to graduates, Hale gently pushed him aside, saying he wanted to celebrate the graduates by giving them $1,000 each. Students appeared from under their umbrellas, erupting in loud cheers and applause (掌声). It went on for nearly a minute before Hale could cut back in.
“Listen, there’s a rule,” he said. “The first $500 is our gift to you. The second $500 is for you to do charity, giving to somebody else in need or another organization who could use it more than you.” As he spoke, two big bags were carried onstage. They were filled with 3,000 envelopes, which he said were decorated by students at two local elementary schools, and marked either “gift” or “give”.
It was time for students to walk across the stage. One at a time, wearing, raincoats and big smiles, they accepted their diplomas (文凭) and their pair of envelopes.
“These are kids who are working their tails off to be there,” he recalled. “They could certainly use the gift.” The 57-year-old man put much of his wealth — over$ 270 million — toward charitable causes, including cancer research and educational institutions.
“Some of the most joyous times have been when I’ve had the chance to share,” Hale explained. “If there’s a way that I could create that seed within another generation where they would get to experience the joy of giving, then maybe that becomes something that they would make an effort to do and be accustomed to doing and make us all a little bit better along the way.” He has learned that one of this year’s graduates gave her money to a local charity that provides holiday gifts for poor children. She herself had been a receiver years ago.
4. How did the students feel upon hearing what Hale said in Paragraph 1?
A. Calm. B. Overjoyed. C. Embarrassed. D. Curious.
5. How could the students deal with the money marked “give” according to the rule?
A. Use it to travel with friends. B. Spend it on learning materials.
C. Pay it for gifts for their teachers. D. Donate it for meaningful purposes.
6. What did Hale mean when mentioning students could use the gift?
A. They had good luck to be there. B. They needn’t work hard any more.
C. They were good enough for the gift. D. They were too young to use the gift.
7. What is the significance of Hale’s practice?
A. Paying kindness forward. B. Promoting teaching effectiveness.
C. Driving the world forward significantly. D. Strengthening interpersonal connections.

On the night of March 9, 1860, a storm-driven schooner (帆船) with only 15 boys aboard, ages 8 to 14, crashes into the shore of an unknown island. And so begins Jules Verne’s Two Years’ Vacation, also known as Adrift (漂流) in the Pacific, a novel originally serialized in twenty-four issues in 1888. It was also part of Voyages Extraordinaires, a series of fifty-four Verne’s novels, published between 1863 and 1905.
Verne created quite a few famous works and he is the second most translated author in the world. While not one of Verne’s best, Two Years’ Vacation is a short, fun, energetic boy’s novel about challenge in the face of tough natural and social realities. It’s told with passion and imagination.
The castaways include fourteen boys from Charman’s boarding-school in Auckland, New Zealand, and Moko, a black twelve-year-old, the only professional sailor. Their wild voyage began three weeks earlier while they were sleeping on the schooner before starting a two-month holiday trip. By the time Moko and the others awoke, the schooner was adrift far out to sea. During the weeks of trying to keep the ship afloat, three older boys took positions of leadership—Gordon, a 14-year-old American; Briant, the 13-year-old son of a French engineer; and Donagan, 13, English like all the other boys.
Two story lines develop on the deserted spot of land in the ocean that the boys name Charmin Island. The boys have to find a way to survive. And another line includes the collision among the leading boys. At one point, Donagan charges Briant with cheating, and he took two boys to leave their group and found another place to settle down. In fact, all three of the leader boys turn out to be brave fellows. And even Briant sayes Donagan’s life at the end of the story.
The liveliness of Verne’s story was such that I was able to soldier on past the imperfections and enjoy the hair-raising feeling while reading.
8. What can be known about Verne?
A. He was a productive writer. B. He used to be a professional sailor.
C. He spent two decades in writing. D. He based his story on his own experience.
9. What does the underlined word “collision” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Company. B. Support. C. Disagreement. D. Affection.
10. What is the author’s opinion about the book?
A. He claims it is perfectly written. B. He likes its adventurous story.
C. He thinks little of its characters. D. He feels pity for the soldier in it.
11. What is the type of the text?
A. A travel journal. B. A news report. C. A short story. D. A book review.

As the world’s oldest living organisms, trees have been our silent companions. Although they inspire a large quantity of fancy tales, the richness of what they say is beyond description.
The German forester Peter Wohlleben spent decades working and learning their secrets. Feelings are rarely applied to trees, but Wohlleben has done so without hesitation. According to Wohlleben, that humans do not speak the trees’ language does not mean they do not communicate. Trees are badly misunderstood even if they communicate with chemical and electrical signals.
Wohlleben claims that trees are creatures as human beings. In one of 50 cases, Wohlleben’s team sees the special friendships between trees, as they can distinguish between one individual and another. This means that trees do not treat all other trees the same. For instance, Wohlleben saw two old beeches (山毛榉) standing next to each other. Compared to the usual case, each one growing its branches turned away from the other rather than toward each other. This kind of partnership is well-known to foresters. They know that such tree pairs are really like a human couple. If they cut one down, they need to cut down both because the other will die anyway.
Trees were also found to keep each other alive in different ways. They pass food to nearby sick trees and send signals to warn others of dangerous insects. In one of his investigations, Wohlleben also discovered a beech tree cut about 400 to 500 years ago. The trunk is still alive and was found with green chlorophyll (叶绿素) under the thick bark. Since it has no leaves to create sugar, the only explanation is that neighbouring trees have supported this tree for more than centuries.
The trees that suffered through drought were found to consume (消耗) less water in spring so that they will have more water available in the summer months. This implies that a tree can bear in mind a drought its whole life, which can be seen from the practice that it is more careful about how much water it consumes.
12. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To lead in a topic. B. To give a summary.
C. To make a comparison. D. To highlight a problem.
13. What can we learn about trees from Wohlleben’s research?
A. Trees rely on humans to survive. B. Trees are faithful to their partners.
C. Trees are independent of each other. D. Trees communicate in the same way as humans.
14. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Trees have a lasting memory. B. Trees die from drought easily.
C. Trees save water throughout the year. D. Trees are aware of the good of sharing.
15. What is the suitable title of the text?
A. Settling Troubles of Forests B. Tightening Bonds with Trees
C. Unlocking Mysteries of Trees D. Protecting the Damaged World
We’ve all heard the standard advice for lifting ourselves out of an unfavorable mood (情绪). Here are some novel ideas beyond that.
____16____ We all sometimes find activities we enjoy but then unaccountably stop doing them. Pick up an activity you typically enjoy but haven’t done in the past six months. This could be, for example, visiting a park you used to like to walk around, or tending a plant you’ve previously grown.
Rewrite a story. We all have stories that get us down. For instance, “I should’ve done X better,” or “X was my fault.” Often, we have replayed the story so many times that we begin to see the story as fact. ____17____ Come up with other explanations for the causes or results of what has happened.
Take a highly creative approach to a task. For example, my kid is currently learning about the 50 states. ____18____ A more creative way might be to ask individuals which state they grew up in and engage in a conversation about that.
Solve a problem in a much simpler way. ____19____ It can pull down your mood and energy. It’s necessary to identify a much simpler way to solve a problem that’s populating your to-do list. For example: give something away rather than cleaning or storing it.
Throw out a “must” thought. It can be a huge mental relief. You can even do this physically. Write the thought on a piece of paper and put it out with your trash! Or type out the thought and strike through it. ____20____
A. Then write a replaceable item.
B. Start with a behavioral strategy.
C. Rediscover a forgotten pleasure.
D. A common way to do this is a postcard exchange.
E. Having hanging items on your to-do list can feel weighty.
F. Yet it’s never too late to recompose a story about your own behavior.
G. Use what you already own to solve a problem rather than searching for a new resource.

At a noisy train station, a young couple boarded a train with their one-year-old son. The child, already battling a fever at home, was further unsettled by the motion of the train and the unfamiliar environment. His discomfort made him cry loudly. The noise filled the carriage (客车厢), breaking the quietness that most travelers had found in their books or the peaceful landscape passing by the windows.
Among the passengers was a businessman seated next to the family, who had been looking forward to a peaceful rest to make up for a sleepless night. The child’s continuous crying disrupted (打乱) his plans, and his annoyance became obvious.
The young mother, with an apologetic smile, tried to rock her son back to calm, softly whispering endearments into his tiny ear. The father, with a helpless look at the surrounding passengers, turned to the visibly annoyed man. “We apologize for the disturbance,” he said. “Our boy has fallen ill, and the motion of the train is not helping matters.”
Upon hearing this, the businessman’s annoyance softened. He had a nephew (外甥) around the same age and understood the challenges of traveling with a sick child. His anger died away, replaced by a wave of understanding. “Don’t worry,” he replied, his voice gentle, “I can try to help.”
He reached into his bag and took out a small wooden rattle (拨浪鼓), a gift for his own nephew. Then he offered a gentle hand to the little boy. He tried to make soft sounds with the wooden rattle, together with making funny faces, trying to distract (使分心) the child from his discomfort. To everyone’s surprise, the little boy’s tears began to stop as the rattle’s gentle sound caught his attention. Soon, he was attracted by the toy. The mother’s relief was evident as she offered a silent, heartfelt “thank you” to the man.

B 5. D 6. C 7. A

根据第一段“Students appeared from under their umbrellas, erupting in loud cheers and applause(掌声). It went on for nearly a minute before Hale could cut back in.(学生们从伞下出现,爆发出巨大的欢呼声和掌声。这持续了将近一分钟,Hale才切入。)”可推知,学生们听到Hale的话欣喜若狂。故选B。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的“The second $ 500 is for you to do charity, giving it to somebody else in need or another organization who could use it more than you.(第二笔500美元是给你做慈善的,捐给其他有需要的人或另一个比你更能使用它的组织)和“They were filled with 3,000 envelopes, which he said were decorated by students at two local elementary schools, and marked either ‘gift’ or ‘give.’(里边有3000个信封,他说这些信封由两所当地的小学生装饰,标有“gift”和“give”)”可知,学生可以将标有“give”的钱为了有意义的目的而捐赠。故答案为D。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“‘These are kids who are working their tails off to be there,’ he recalled. ‘They could certainly use the gift.’(‘这些都是努力奋斗站在这里的孩子’他回忆说。‘他们当然可以使用这笔礼物’)可推知,Hale想说明学生们足够好配得上这笔礼物。故答案为C。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“If there’s a way that I could create that seed within another generation where they would get to experience the joy of giving, then maybe that becomes something that they would make an effort to do and be accustomed to doing and make us all a little bit better along the way.(如果我可以创造一种方式在另一代人心里播种种子,使他们体验给予的快乐,那么也许那会变成某种他们会尽力去做并且习惯去做的事情,而且让我们在前进的道路上变得更好)”和“He has learned that one of this year’s graduates gave her money to a local charity that provides holiday gifts to poor children. She herself had been a receiver years ago.(他了解到今年的一位毕业生将她的钱捐给当地慈善,为孩子们提供假期礼物。她自己几年前就当过接收者)”可推知,Hale做法的意义在于将善举继续传递。故答案为A。

10. What is the author’s opinion about the book?

Protecting the Damaged World
A 13. B 14. A 15. C

根据第三段“This kind of partnership is well-known to foresters. They know that such tree pairs are really like a human couple. If they cut one down, they need to cut down both because the other will die anyway.(这种伙伴关系为林业工作者所熟知。他们知道这样一对树就像人类夫妻。如果他们砍倒了一个,他们就需要把两个都砍倒,因为另一个无论如何都会死)”可知,树对它们的伴侣很忠诚。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The trees that suffered through drought were found to consume(消耗)less water in spring so that they will have more water available in the summer months. This implies that a tree can bear in mind a drought its whole life, which can be seen from the practice that it is more careful about how much water it consumes.(研究发现,遭受干旱的树木在春天消耗的水更少,这样它们在夏天就有更多的水可用。这意味着一棵树一生都能记住干旱,这可以从实践中看出,它对消耗多少水更加谨慎。)”可推知,遭受过干旱的树木在春天消耗水更少,这样会让它们在夏天有更多的水可用,是因为这棵树记住了自己春天干旱的状况,由此对水的消耗更加谨慎即树有长久记忆。故选A。
根据第一段“As the world’s oldest living organisms, trees have been our silent companions. Although they inspire a large quantity of fancy tales, the richness of what they say is beyond description.(作为世界上最古老的生物,树木一直是我们沉默的伴侣。虽然它们激发了大量的奇幻故事,但它们所说的内容之丰富是无法形容的。)”以及根据第二段“The German forester Peter Wohlleben spent decades working and learning their secrets. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
C 17. F 18. D 19. E 20. A
根据后文“We all sometimes find activities we enjoy but then unaccountably stop doing them. Pick up an activity you typically enjoy but haven’t done in the past six months. This could be, for example, visiting a park you used to like to walk around, or tending a plant you’ve previously grown.( 有时候,我们都会找到自己喜欢的活动,但后来却莫名其妙地停止了。
同时根据空格前的句子“Often, we have replayed the story so many times that we begin to see the story as fact. (通常,我们把故事重复播放了太多次,以至于我们开始把故事当成事实。)”可知,我们经常因为自己的行为自责,而且多次重复这种负面想法,就会把这看做是事实。F选项“Yet it’s never too late to recompose a story about your own behavior.( 然而,重新编一个关于你自己行为的故事永远不会太晚。)”
根据后文的内容“A more creative way might be to ask individuals which state they grew up in and engage in a conversation about that.( 一种更有创意的方法可能是询问个人他们是在哪个州长大的,并就此展开对话。)” 所以,D项“A common way to do this is a postcard exchange.(一种常见的方法是交换明信片)”符合题意。故选D。
根据空格后的“It can pull down your mood and energy.(它会降低你的情绪和精力。)” 同时再根据后文“It’s necessary to identify a much simpler way to solve a problem that’s populating your to-do list. (有必要确定一个更简单的方法来解决你的待办事项清单上的问题。)”可知,此处强调的是要确定一个更简单的方法来解决自己代办事项清单上的问题。 E选项“Having hanging items on your to-do list can feel weighty.(待办事项清单上挂着的事项会让你感觉很重。)”
本段主题句是“Throw out a “must” thought. (“扔掉一个’必须’的想法”)”。同时根据空格前的内容“Write the thought on a piece of paper and put it out with your trash! Or type out the thought and strike through it.( 把你的想法写在一张纸上,和你的垃圾一起扔出去!或者把你的想法打出来,然后划掉。)”可知,此处列举的是一系列行为,包括把你的想法写在一张纸上,然后和你的垃圾一起扔出去,以及把想法打出来,然后把它划掉,设空处应该顺延这个动作。A项“Then write a replaceable item.(然后写一个可替换的项目)”符合题意。故选A。

Among the passengers was a businessman, seated next to the family, who had been looking forward to a peaceful rest to make up for a sleepless night.

Then the atmosphere in the carriage began to change. Other passengers, who had been quietly observing the situation, were inspired to lend a hand. A young woman with a kind smile offered to share her sketchbook, offering to draw pictures to entertain the child. And a conductor brought more toys from the children’s kit. A group of students traveling together played a soft, comforting music with the guitar to calm the little boy. The once-annoyed passengers had transformed into a caring community, and their collective efforts made a difference to the young family who were struggling.
With the shared care of the passengers, the little boy eventually went into a peaceful sleep. The young couple, touched by the unexpected kindness, felt a profound sense of gratitude and warmth. They exchanged heartfelt smiles with these kind strangers. As the train pulled into its destination station, they shared warm farewells. The passengers were getting off the train with smiles and expressing good wishes for the young family. The young couple, carrying their now sleeping son, stepped off the train with a renewed hope and a story to tell about the kindness of strangers.
