Passage 2
(2023-2024学年高一上·重庆·期中)It’s not hard to see how welcoming Berlin is to families. There are kid-orientated(儿童导向的) cafes and imaginatively themed playgrounds. Parks and woodlands provide plentiful picnicking opportunities and, in hot weather, lakes offer sunbathing.
Getting around is easy, too. The city’s neighborhoods are walkable, and its public transport network efficient and cheap. Its wide, flat streets, bike lanes and family-friendly cycle hire make two wheels a great way to explore while taking in the city's impressive sights—all of which make Berlin a memorable family destination.
What to do with toddlers(学步的儿童)
A popular neighbourhood with families, Prenzlauer Berg has playgrounds, parks and pretty streets with shops selling kids’ clothes and toys, as well as family-friendly cafes. For those gifted in music, the Frank Gehry-designed concert hall at the Barenboim-Said Academy hosts morning concerts for babies under 12 months and afternoon concerts for one-to-five-year-olds. Meanwhile, central Tiergarten is a wonderful spot for walking, picnicking or kicking a ball in the grass; wander through the woods, spotting cultural sights. Of the park’s six playgrounds, the one close to Thomas-Dehler-Strasse is best equipped for toddlers.
What to do with tweens and teenagers
The Deutsches Technik museum will absorb transport and technology fans for hours. For those ready to learn about the darkest chapter of German history, the Topography of Terror museum is located on the site of the former SS and Gestapo(盖世太保) headquarters. Checkpoint Charlie is a few minutes walk away and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe can be reached in around 20 minutes on foot. To experience a little of Berlin's alternative side, Bearpit Karaoke is held on Sundays at Mauer park.

Passage 3
(2023-2024学年高一下·河北保定·期末)Kids are even more in the bag of social media companies than we think. Many of them have given away their online autonomy fully to their phones. For them, the only acceptable online environment is one designed by big tech algorithms(算法).
As children’s free time and imaginations become more and more tightly joined to the social media, we need to understand that uncontrolled access to the Internet comes at a cost. This spring, I visited with a group of high school students in Connecticut to have a conversation about the role that social media plays in their daily lives and in their mental health. More children today report feeling depressed, lonely, and disconnected than ever before.
There are countless problems with children and teenagers using social media. But the high schoolers with whom I met alerted me to a hidden result of teenagers’ growing addiction to social media: the death of exploration and discovery. Algorithmic recommendations now do the work of discovering and pursuing interests, finding community, and learning about the world. Kids today are, simply put, not learning how to be curious, critical adults—and they don’t seem to know what they’ve lost.
We all know the journeys in life matter just as much as the destinations. It is the sweat to get the outcome that makes the outcome more fulfilling and satisfying.
What the kids I spoke to did not know is that these algorithms have been designed in a way that unavoidably makes and keeps users unhappy. Social media companies know that content that generates negative feelings holds our attention longer than that which makes us feel good. If you are a teenager feeling bad about yourself, your social media feed will keep delivering you videos and pictures that are likely to produce negative feelings.
We should take some measures. Teenagers and kids are to be inspired to determine if we will really be happier as a species when machines and algorithms do all the work for us, or if fulfillment only comes when humans actually do the work, searching and discovering, of being human.
7. We can learn from paragraph 1 that social media companies ______.
A. earn a lot of money from kids
B. have a great impact on kids
C. make kids give away their phones
D. provide necessary services to kids
8. According to the author, what is the result of children’s addiction to social media?
A. They become more dependent on their phones.
B. They feel less depressed and lonely than ever before.
C. They are unable to find community and learn about the world.
D. They gradually lose the ability to be curious and critical.
9. Why do social media companies prefer content that generates negative feelings?
A. It helps them gain more attention from users.
B. It makes users feel more satisfied with their products.
C. It encourages users to explore and discover new things.
D. It promotes the development of artificial intelligence.
10. What should be done to change the current situation?
A. Limit the use of social media for children and teenagers.
B. Inspire children to complete the work without the help of algorithms.
C. Encourage teenagers and children to explore and discover the contentment of life.
D. Redesign social media algorithms to make users happier and more fulfilled.
Passage 4
(2023-2024学年高一下·湖北咸宁·期末)I ask every student I interview for admission to my institution, Pitzer College, the same question, “What do you look forward to the most in college?” I was amazed and delighted recently when a student sat across from me at a Starbucks in New York City and replied, “I look forward to the possibility of failure.” Of course, this is not how most students respond to the question when sitting before the person who can make decisions about their academic futures, but this young man took a risk.
“You see, my parents have never let me fail,” he said. “When I want to take a chance at something, they remind me it’s not a safe route to take. Taking a more demanding(要求高的) course or trying an activity I may not succeed in, they tell me, will ruin my chances at college admission. Even the sacrifice of staying up late to do something unrelated to school, they see as a risk to my academic work and college success.”
These days, finding imperfections in a college application is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Students try their best to hide factors they regard as negative and only tell us things they believe we will find impressive. This is supported by a secondary school culture where teachers are under pressure to give students nothing less than an A, and are told not to report disciplinary infractions(违纪) to colleges. Education agents in other countries are known to falsify student transcripts(成绩单), assuming that outstanding grades are the ticket to admission.
I’ve spent enough time in high schools to know teenagers will never be perfect. They do silly things, mess up, fall down, and lack confidence. The ability to bounce(回弹) back is an essential life skill students have to learn on their own. The lessons of failure can’t be taught in a classroom; they are experienced and reflected upon.
Failure is about growth, learning, overcoming, and moving on. Let’s allow young people to fail. Not only will they learn something, it might even get them into college.
11. What can you infer about students in the author’s interviews?
A. They usually try all out to display their strengths.
B. They usually express a desire to experience failure.
C. They usually take a risk so as to get admitted into college.
D. They usually complain about their parents’ control over them.
12. What can you learn from paragraph 3?
A. Students should make their college applications perfect.
B. Secondary school teachers don’t like to give students A.
C. Secondary schools tend to help cover students’ imperfections.
D. Outstanding scores will certainly ensure you a place in a college.
13. According to the author, what quality may be expected from students by college professors?
A. The ability to learn outside class.
B. The ability to deal with failure.
C. The ability to be always confident.
D. The ability to learn on their own.
14. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Failure is the mother of success.
B. Teenagers are far from being perfect.
C. If you want to get into college, learn to fail.
D. If you want to impress interviewers, take a risk.
Passage 5
(2023-2024学年高一下·陕西渭南·期中)Social media allows teenagers to create online identities, communicate with others and build social networks. These networks can provide teenagers with valuable support. Teenagers also use social media for entertainment and self-expression. And the platforms can expose teenagers to current events, allow them to communicate across geographic barriers and touch them about different kinds of subjects. However, social media use can also, negatively affect teenagers, distracting them, influencing their sleep, and exposing them to bullying(恐吓), rumour(谣言) spreading, untrue views of other people’s lives and peer pressure.
There are steps you can take to encourage responsible use of social media and limit some of its negative effects.
Set reasonable limits. Talk to your teenager about how to avoid letting social media affect his or her activities, sleep, meals or homework. Encourage a bedtime routine that avoids electronic media use, and keep cellphones and iPads out of teenagers’ bedrooms. Set an example by following these rules yourself.
Monitor your teenager’s accounts. Let your teenager know that you’ll be regularly checking his or her social media accounts. You might aim to do so once a week or more. And make sure you follow through.
Explain what’s not OK. Discourage your teenager from gossiping, spreading rumour, bullying or damaging someone’s reputation — online or otherwise. Talk to your teenager about what is appropriate and safe to share on social media.
Encourage face-to-face contact with friends. This is particularly significant for teenagers who are easily hurt by social anxiety disorder.
Talk about social media. Talk about your own social media habits. Ask your teenager how he or she is using social media and how it makes him or her feel. Remind your teenager that social media is full of unrealistic images.
If you think your teenager is under the anxiety or depression related to social media use, talk to your child’s health care provider immediately.
15. How does the author mainly develop the first paragraph?
A. By providing reasons. B. By making comparison.
C. By listing numbers. D. By raising questions.
16. What’s a better way to avoid being affected by cellphones according to the passage?
A. Powering them off. B. Putting them in the schoolbag.
C. Listening to them instead of watching. D. Keeping them out of bedroom.

A. Teenagers’ social media accounts should never be checked by other people.
B. It is not necessary to explain what is not good in social media.
C. Face-to-face contact is no longer important for teenagers in the Internet era.
D. You should ask for help if your teenager is experiencing the negative effects of social media.
18. Who is the text written for?
A. Parents. B. Teenagers. C. Officials. D. Doctors.
Passage 6
(2023-2024学年高一广东茂名·期中)When it was my thirteenth birthday, I was overjoyed that the moment has come for me to become a teenager. I would be given more responsibility and freedom. My writing skills would strengthen and become sharper(鲜明的). To me, the experience of being a teenager excited me. I was so focused on the pleasures that I almost forgot my sister’s warning. I didn’t understand at first, but realized later what she meant.
As a teen, you — and probably many others — love the sweets teenhood brings. You are given more freedom from your parents. You can actually have some privacy with the freedom you have. The talents you have start to strengthen and become sharp. Also, you can get a job and earn your own money. Of course, you have to do so when your parents allow you to.
As I said before, being a teenager isn’t all happy and fun. Adults place higher expectations on you as you get older. The peer pressure starts to kick in. As you start to gain friends, you lose friends as well. The mood swings(情绪波动) come and go. To make matters worse, you receive more homework. That’s terrible!
All in all, teen life can be really stresstul. With so many things going on, a teenager can hardly breathe! I, for one, can tell from experience that teenhood can really be a disappointment, with no fun at all. And then, it can be heaven(天堂). That is just the way life goes.
19. What did the author’s sister probably warn?
A. Every coin has two sides.
B. It is never too old to learn.
C. Failure is the mother of success.
D. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
20. What does teenage life mean to the author?
A. Poorer understanding. B. More friends.
C. Less freedom. D. Sharper talents.
21. What’s the worse thing teenagers will experience according to the text?
A. Endless homework. B. Lack of money.
C. High expectations. D. Bad mood.
22. What is the author’s attitude towards teenage life?
A. Favourable. B. Relaxed. C. Objective. D. Doubtful.
Passage 7
(2023-2024学年高一下·浙江·期中)Earlier this month, TikTok announced that it will be introducing screen time limits for the accounts of users aged under 18. Children under 13 will require a parent or guardian to type in a password to continue scrolling(滚屏) through their feed, and those aged 13 — 17 will be asked to set their own password s when the viewing time goes beyond the limit.
Studies suggest that 30 minutes may be the best for social media use, where users are able to stay connected with friends and family and view entertainment. However, many other studies show that overly-heavy social media use can lead to a lot of problems, like physical and mental problems.
By suggesting 100 minutes as a hard line where a password is required to be created by the user, TikTok is gradually making the standards clear about what may be regarded as a problematic social media habit in young people. Although these passwords for older teenagers can obviously be bypassed, they are a step in the right direction in encouraging children to use social media responsibly.
In addition, parents who own their own TikTok accounts will be able to link with their children’s accounts, gaining additional controls, such as muting notifications(消息免打扰) and customizing time limits for different days in the week.
Algorithms (算法) that could tell parents if the child has been viewing dangerous material could soon be put into use. However, the difficulty in this is the amount of content available on the internet. Finally, apps such as TikTok and Instagram will need to continue introducing more measures to improve online safety for children.
Lawmakers around the world are paying close attention to the effect social media has on the young, meaning that the development of new tools to improve its use will no doubt take place soon if big tech wishes to avoid additional legal problems.
23. Why did TikTok introduce screen time limits for teenagers?
A. To prevent their overuse of social media. B. To improve online safety.
C. To strengthen their relationship with parents. D. To develop their ability of self-control.
24. What’s the author’s attitude towards TikTok’s new policy?
A. Indifferent. B. Critical. C. Supportive. D. Unclear.
25. What can parents do to help children use social media responsibly?
A. Type in a password to stop the use. B. Get connected to the children’s account.
C. Set the same time limits in a week. D. Use algorithms to remove dangerous content.
26. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about social media?
A. Its impacts on the young. B. Solutions to its technological problems.
C. Its application to lawmaking. D. Legal pressure on its improvement.
Passage 8
(2023-2024学年高一上·河南濮阳·阶段练习)In January, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook’s parent company Meta, appeared at a hearing to answer questions about how social media potentially harms children. Zuckerberg opened by saying: “The existing body of scientific work has not shown a causal link(关联) between using social media and young people having worse mental health.”
But many social scientists would disagree with that statement. In recent years, studies have started to show a causal link between teen social media use and reduced well-being. One of the most cited studies into this link focused on Facebook.
Researchers tried to discover whether the platform’s introduction across college campuses in the mid-2000s increased symptoms(症状) related to mental health problems. The answer was a clear yes, says Alexey Makarin, a coauthor of the study. “There is still a lot to be explored,” Makarin says, “but to say there is no causal evidence that social media causes mental health issues, and I definitely object to that.”
The concern and the studies come from data showing that social media use in teens aged 13 to 17 is now very common. Two-thirds of teens report using TikTok, and some 60 percent of teens report using Instagram or Snapchat, a 2022 survey found. Another survey showed that girls, on average, spend around 3. 4 hours per day on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, compared with about 2.1 hours among boys. At the same time, more teens are showing signs of depression than ever, especially girls.
As more studies show a strong link between these phenomena, researchers are starting to move their attention to possible solutions. Why does social media use seem to bring about mental health problems? Why do those effects unevenly exist among different groups, such as girls or young adults? And can the good points of social media be teased out(梳理) from the bad points to provide more targeted guidance to teens, their caregivers and policymakers?
27. Why does the author mention Zuckerberg’s words?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To offer a piece of advice.
C. To present the image of a company. D. To add background information.
28. What does Makarin’s study find?
A. It is important to network with others. B. Social media harms teens’ mental health.
C. The Internet plays a key role in our daily life. D. Messaging tools cause parents mental suffering.
29. Which is the percentage of teenagers using TikTok according to the 2022 survey?
A. 34%. B. 60%. C. 67%. D. 76%.
30. What will researchers probably do?
A. Focus on all the Internet users. B. Turn to teenagers’ caregivers.
C. Limit adults’ social media use. D. Work out targeted solutions.
Passage 9
(2023-2024学年高一下·山东青岛·期末)Gitanjali Rao, Colorado teenager who invented mobile device to test for lead (铅) in drinking water, was Time’s Kid of the Year for 2020. The magazine announced the award on Thursday, citing Rao’s ability to apply scientific ideas to real-world problems and her desire to motivate other kids to take up their own causes.
It was just the latest recognition for Rao, 15, who was named last year to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. She won praise in 2017 after she responded to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, by creating a device named Tehys, using carbon nanotube sensors to detect(探测) lead in water. The Lone Tree, Colo., native was named America’s Top Young Scientist when she was in the seventh grade. She went on to cooperate with scientists in the water industry to try to get the device on the market.
More recently, Rao has developed a phone and Web tool named Kindly, which uses artificial intelligence technology to detect possible early signs of cyberbullying(网络欺凌).
“You type in a word or phrase, and it’s able to pick it up if it’s bullying, and it gives you the choice to edit it or send it the way it is,” Rao told Time. “The goal is not to punish people. As a teenager I know teenagers tend to become very angry sometimes. Instead, it gives you the chance to rethink what you’re saying so that you know what to do next time around.”
Rao was chosen in part because of the way she has followed up her technical work with efforts to get other young people to work on solving the problems they see.
“I don’t look like your typical scientist. Everything I see on TV is that it’s an older, usually white man as a scientist,” she told Time. “My goal has really shifted, not only from creating my own devices to solve the world’s problems, but inspiring others to do the same as well. So I really want to put out that message: If I can do it, you can do it, and anyone can do it.”

A. To make sure the security of the network.
B. To punish teenagers’ wrong thoughts.
C. To use artificial intelligence technology.
D. To type a word or phrase on the Internet.
33. Why did Rao say “anyone can do it” in the last paragraph?
A. A white man can work as a scientist.
B. We ought to set a goal at an early age.
C. We are supposed to inspire others to do the same.
D. Everybody may succeed in solving world’s problems.
34. In which section of newspaper may this text appear?
A. Health. B. Science. C. People D. Entertainment.
Passage 10
(2023-2024学年高一下·湖南益阳·月考)Who would have thought a teenager’s mobile phone could help them manage their mental health by supporting a good night’s sleep? A new app aimed at 12-to 16-year-olds is showing strong early results, improving both the hours of sleep and reducing depression and anxiety.
Sleep Ninja, a free app created by a mental health research organization--the Black Dog Institute, has shown significant early results in improving teenagers’ sleep patterns(模式), so critical not just for school readiness but for overall good mental health, co-creator Aliza Werner-Seidler said.
“Adolescents(青少年) struggle to get the recommended 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night,” Dr Werner-Seidler, a clinical psychologist, said. “As a result, approximately 40 per cent of all young people will experience a significant sleep problem by early high school which heightens their risk of mental ill-health, which is a risk factor for a range of disorders including depression and anxiety.”
Those using the app nominate a time to be up in the morning to make it to school or other activities. From there, it work backwards, determining when they should be in bed. The app gives an alert to start a pre-bed routine, which launches at least an hour before bed time. Part of that routine is to put the phone and other devices away, and engage in behaviors more suitable to sleep. Some of this is simply to have a shower, clean teeth, read a book. But the app also offers a form of practical tips to help them establish sleep routines, things like how to set up their bedroom, what to do during the day to improve their chances of sleep and how to reduce those negative repetitive thoughts that come in at night.
Dr Werner-Seidler said Sleep Ninja was the only such app designed specifically for adolescents, and the results so far had been very encouraging. She added that we also saw rates of depression drop from 77 percent at the start of the study to 44 percent after using the app.
35. What do we know about Sleep Ninja?
A. It aims to improve adults’ mental health.
B. It’s a new mobile phone for teenagers.
C. It is invented by 12-to 16-year-olds.
D. It’s a free app designed by Black Dog Institute.
36. What does the third paragraph focus on?
A. The creating process of Sleep Ninja. B. The heavy burden of schooling.
C. The practical need for Sleep Ninja. D. The cost of making Sleep Ninja.
37. How can Sleep Ninja work on teenagers?
A. By reducing negative repetitive thoughts.
B. By setting an alert in the morning.
C. By putting digital devices away.
D. By helping form good sleep routines.
38. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Education Report. B. Society Report. C. Health Report. D. Entertainment Report.
Passage 11
(2023-2024学年高一下·浙江宁波·期中)Parenting styles have shifted over the years with the rapid changes in the world. Nowadays parents generally spend more time in finding out how best to raise their child whether it’s through technology or tried-and-tested parenting practices.
With easy access to countless websites and social media groups interested in parenting, modern parents are capable of finding answers to their questions, from managing a baby’s cries to communicating with a moody teenager. This increased availability(可利用性) of resources has made parents more involved in their children’s academic, emotional, and social development. They are also more eager to find out effective parenting methods to help them raise well-behaved and confident children.
A modern parenting style that has appeared is helicopter parenting, where parents are too much focused on their children. They help children with tasks that children can do on their own, like selecting activities and friends for them, or calling their teachers about homework matters. Such a parenting style can stifle the development of the children’s ability to handle responsibilities independently. Children might be ill-equipped with life skills such as making the bed, clearing their plates or doing their schoolwork. Always protecting children from failures may also stop them from developing adaptability and gaining skills like problem-solving.
On the other hand, parents in the past tended to monitor less. Children were given more freedom to manage their schoolwork and choose the friends they want to play with. In some families, children of the past were often expected to shoulder the responsibilities of caring for younger brothers and sisters and managing housework. Living in the pre-Internet era, parents were less informed about different parenting methods, and their parenting styles were guided more by their personalities, common sense and friendly advice from their parents and neighbours, rather than by social media influences or parenting websites. There is no one right way to raise a child. Each child is unique and should be raised differently by parents who are present, but not wandering; who are supportive but not controlling; and who protect but not care too much.
39. How does the increased availability of resources influence parenting style?
A. It saves parents’ much time spent on children.
B. It makes parents more relaxed in raising children.
C. It encourages parents to be less strict with their children.
D. It enables parents to be more active in their children’s development.
40. What does the underlined word stifle in Para 3 mean?
A. Bring about. B. Hold back. C. Take down. D. Set up.
41. What do we know about parents in the past?
A. They educated kids in a strict way.
B. They over-judged their kids’ independence.
C. They afforded kids more space for self-growth.
D. They tended to stay away from social activities.
42. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. How parents raise all-round children.
B. How people improve parent-child relationship.
C. How parenting modes have changed over the years.
D. How information technology affects people’s lifestyles.
Passage 12
(2023-2024学年高一下·广东珠海·检测) Social media is one of the fastest-growing industries in today’s world. A study conducted by the US think tank(智囊团) Pew Research Center showed that 92 percent of teenagers go online daily.
The wide spread of social media has changed nearly all parts of teenagers’ lives.
Changing relationships
High school student Elly Cooper from Illinois said social media often reduces face-to-face communication.
“It makes in-person relationships harder because people give attention to their phones instead of their boyfriends or girlfriends,” Cooper said.
There’s also a greater possibility of things getting lost in translation over social media.
“If half of your relationship is over social media, you don’t really know how the other person is reacting,” Sienna Schulte, a junior student from Illinois, said.
Yet, some people believe social media has made it easier to start relationships with anyone from anywhere. Beth Kaplan from Illinois met her long-distance friend through social media. He currently lives in Scotland, but they’re still able to frequently communicate with one another.
“I can feel close to someone that I’m talking to via(通过) FaceTime,” Kaplan said.
Wanting to be “liked”
The rise of social media has changed the way teenagers see themselves.
The 19-year-old Essena O’Neill announced on the social networking service Instagram that she was quitting social media because it made her obsessed(痴迷) with appearing perfect online.
Negative comments also can do great damage to a teenager’s self-esteem(自尊).
In particular, anonymous(匿名的) social media apps such as Yik Yak may provide opportunities for cyber bullying(网络欺凌).
The app allows users within 5 miles (8 km) to create and add comments to everything. Teenagers who get negative comments on these sites can’t help but feel hurt.
Opening new doors
However, Armin Korsos, a student from Illinois, takes advantage of the comments he receives over social media to improve his videos on the social networking site Youtube.
“Social media can help people show themselves and their talents to the world in a way that was never possible before,” Korsos said.
But Korsos recognizes that social media has become a distraction(让人分心的事). “Social media, though it helps people connect with their friends and stay updated, is not all necessary.”
43. What is the article mainly about?
A. The major problems with social media. B. The effect of social media on teenagers.
C. How teenagers benefit from social media. D. Why social media appeals so much to teenagers.
44. How does social media change relationships, according to the article?
A. It pushes people to meet their friends more often offline.
B. It encourages people to pay more attention to those around them.
C. It enables users to understand accurately what others are talking about online.
D. It allows people to keep in touch with their friends who live far away more easily.
45. Which statement about the use of social media would Armin Korsos probably agree with?
A. The use of social media taught him to turn negative comments into motivations.
B. Social media can easily become an addiction (着迷), despite its benefits.
C. Social media is mostly a distraction to teenagers, so it is unnecessary for it to exist.

Passage 13
(2023-2024学年高一下河北邢台·检测)“Jordyn Perez was about to turn 8 years old when her mom suggested a new way to celebrate her birthday. “What would you think about donating your gifts to a children’s hospital?” her mom said. At first, Jordyn wasn’t sure. Then she gave it some thought. “I was like, ‘Okay, that’s cool,’ ” Jordyn said. “I already had everything I needed, and these kids that were going through things at the hospital—they needed it more than I did.”
“Just to see these kids’ little faces when Jordyn hands them the gifts at the hospital, that’s always been our favorite part,” says Jordyn’s mother. “Seeing these kids’ reactions just touches our hearts.” Kids can be in the hospital for lots of reasons, for example, asthma, a condition that affects breathing. Whatever the patient’s ailment, a hospital stay can be stressful. Efforts like Jordyn’s are a bright spot during a difficult time.
Since that time, it has kicked off each year in early November, five or six weeks before her birthday. Along with an invitation to her party, Jordyn’s friends get a list of gift ideas for kids at the hospital. For the littlest patients, gifts might include building blocks or toy trains. “And for the teenagers, my age or older,” Jordyn says, “it might be music player or books.”
Natalie Gutierrez works in the public relations office at Baptist Children’s Hospital. She has seen first-hand the effect of Jordyn’s gift-giving. “She puts smiles on the faces of these little patients in our hospital and on our nurses and staff,” Gutierrez says. Jordyn’s efforts to help kids in the hospital have inspired others to follow in her footsteps. More boys and girls have collected and given gifts for their birthdays too. “Giving to others, it’s just a good feeling to have at the end of the day,” Jordyn says. “I want to keep doing this as long as I can.”

Passage 14
(2023-2024学年高一下·江苏扬州·检测)Inside the low lighting of Gather East Rock, the smell of coffee beans swirls(打旋) through the air. Art decorates the blue walls, but one painting stands out among the others. The painting’s name is “Mother Divine”, by the artist Sarahi Zacatelco. The mother in question is a green woman, with colorful plants adorning her head and water dripping(滴下) down her neck. In every brushstroke, Zacatelco pays respect to the man who taught her how to paint: her grandfather Agustin.
Born in 1982, Zacatelco learned how to create art from her grandfather in Oaxaca. At the time, her grandfather lived with her while her mother worked. Together, the two spent hours going out to the central square in Juchitán, where she let her senses take over. “You can see the food, you can smell it, you can see the lady selling flowers, and you can see everything.” she recalled excitedly. When she was six years old, her grandfather gave her a piece of paper and watercolors and showed her how to put the colors on it. She hasn’t stopped making art since.
Zacatelco’s grandparents made chess pieces out of rocks and wood to sell. They also made Talaverapottery(陶器) pieces, which Zacatelco described as “a Baroque tradition” that one might see in old colonial(殖民地的) homes. She no longer has any of her grandparent’s Talavera—“the tradition was lost due to being poorly paid and a lot of effort going into each piece.”
In the 1990s, Zacatelco’s mother decided to move her family to give them a better life. She moved her children to Mexico City, then to the Bronx, and then to the Brownsville neighborhood in Eastern Brooklyn. The family moved to Fair Haven, where Zacatelco still lives, in 2001. She called it the perfect place to raise two boys and two girls. Her family did not keep any of her grandfather’s old art before he died. But his artistic spirit did not die with him. Zacatelco carries on his legacy(遗产) today with her art.
50. How is paragraph 1 developed?
A. By testing an assumption.
B. By giving a description.
C. By making a comparison.
D. By analyzing a phenomenon.
51. How did Agustin inspire Zacatelco’s artistic spirit at first?
A. He instructed her in watercolor painting.
B. He introduced sensory experiences to her.
C. He taught her to make chess pieces out of rocks.
D. He asked her to observe his creation of pottery pieces.
52. Why did Zacatelco’s mother move her family?
A. She wanted them to live a better life.
B. She needed to change jobs frequently.
C. She found their house small for them.
D. She wanted to relieve the pain of life.
53. What would be the best title for this text?

D. An artist’s life: sources of inspiration
Passage 15
(2023-2024学年高一下辽宁沈阳·检测)Back in 1958, I was crazy about the 746 Norfolk & Western. The smooth bullet-nosed engine with its orange and yellow lines and shiny streamlined black tender(煤水车) seemed to completely occupy my mind.
Together the engine and tender measured a little shy of 2 feet—enormous by the toy train standards of the day. Even better, the 746 had a working headlight and smoker, and its tender sang high.
Unfortunately, the amazing 746 also had an amazing price—$50, equal to about $450 today. That was far more than my grandfather could afford. Instead, I had to be content with his little Lionel plastic, which was SIX INCHES shorter than the 746 and had no headlight, no smoker or no sound! But that was the best that my grandfather could give me at that time.
Years passed, and I was in my 30s. Complicated sound systems and computer controls dominated toy trains. I never gave a look. My interest in toy trains, I firmly believed, had faded, so did my admiration for the 746, since my grandfather was not with me. The 746 was never called to mind. On an ordinary day, however, I happened to see the 746 outside the window of a train show. Just one look, I could not look away. Childhood memories that I tried to hide in the depths of my heart raced through my mind, happy or sad.
That day I took the 746 home and placed it in the centre of the room, and let my childhood dream sing its way around me. Smoke rose out from the engine and the soft song sounded from its tender. It seemed as if I could see the soft light in my grandfather’s eyes and hear his cheerful laughter.
54. Which best describes the 746 in the author’s eyes?
A. It was taller than the author.
B. Its price rose from $50 to $450.
C. It was the largest train in 1958.
D. Its beauty was beyond compare.
55. How did the author feel when receiving his little Lionel plastic?
A. Visibly relieved. B. Really excited.
C. Terribly shameful. D. Slightly unsatisfied.
56. What happened to the author in his 30s?
A. He left his grandfather alone.
B. He admired advanced toy trains.
C. He didn’t attempt to recall the past.
D. He was reminded of 746 frequently.
57. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The author found the 746 on purpose.
B. The author liked singing childish songs.
C. The author’s love for the 746 did not change at all.
D. The author’s grandfather lived far away from him.

Passage 1
(2023-2024学年高一下江西抚州·检测) Are you happy with your appearance? 1
“Almost all the girls with single-fold eyelids(单眼皮) in our class have had double eyelid operations,” Zeng, a Senior 2 student from Chengdu, told Xinhua. Zeng had the same surgery done this summer. 2
From popular photo-editing apps to plastic surgery(整形手术), it seems that large eyes, pale skin and a skinny body are the only standard for beauty these days. But can following this standard really make us feel good about ourselves?
3 . According to Huxiu News, over six in ten girls choose not to take part in certain daily activities, such as attending school, because they feel bad about their looks. As much as 31 percent of teenagers avoid speaking up in class because they worry that others will notice their looks.
“Many teenagers are upset about their appearance because they believe in unrealistic standards of beauty,” experts say. 4 Seeing all these things can make anyone believe that they’re too dark, too fat, too short, or too tall.
However, trying to live up to strict standards can make us feel anxious. What troubles us is not just our “imperfect” looks, but the fact that we criticize ourselves too much.
5 Plus-size models are being featured in some fashion shows. All of us should be just as confident as they are.
A. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.
B. Body image anxiety is common among teenagers.
C. Guys care just as much as girls do about their body image.
D. Some teenagers might feel negative about their appearance.
E. It’s common for teenagers to feel confident about their appearance.
F. She and many of her classmates believe bigger eyes look more beautiful.
G. Perfect faces and bodies are everywhere in advertising, TV shows and social media.
Passage 2
(2023-2024学年高一下·山东德州期末) There is increasing evidence that sitting down too much can be a risk to our health. 6
These studies have shown sitting for long periods can slow the metabolism(新陈代谢), which affects the body’s ability to control blood sugar, blood pressure and break down body fat. 7 Being overweight and obese, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancers are the most common ones.
Experts recommend breaking up long periods of sitting time with light activities, for example, walking, jogging, swimming and so on. 8 We are advised to exercise regularly at least 150 minutes a week, and reduce sitting time. However, there is currently not enough evidence to set a time limit on how much time we should sit each day.
However, some countries have made suggestions that children limit screen time, such as TV and video games, to 1 to 2 hours a day. This is to reduce the time spent sitting. For children and teenagers aged 5 to 18, reducing sitting time includes anything that involves moving in or around the home, classroom or community. 9
*Agree a family limit to screen time per day.
*Make bedrooms a TV, electronic device, laptop and phone-free zone.
*Set “no screen time” rules to encourage other activities.
*Encourage participation in house chores, such as setting the table or taking the bins out.
*Choose gifts such as a scooter, skateboard, ball or kite to encourage active play.
10 Researches seem to point to the fact that less sitting and more moving contribute to better health. We might start by simply standing rather than sitting when we have the chance.
A. Anyway, move more, sit less.
B. For starters, you’ll burn more calories.
C. Here are some tips to reduce their sitting time.
D. Most of the evidence is based on scientific studies.
E. They can reduce our risk of bad health from inactivity.
F. Scientists don’t yet know exactly why sitting is so bad.
G. Studies have linked being inactive with health problems.

Passage 4
(2023-2024学年高一上·湖南常德·阶段练习)While teenagers who are at risk of depression with risky behaviors — drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and cutting classes often alert parents and teachers that serious problems are brewing, a new study finds that there’s another group of adolescents who are in nearly as much danger of experiencing the same mental symptoms.
These teens use tons of media, get insufficient sleep and have a sedentary(不爱活动的) lifestyle. 16 But the study warns that it is teenagers who engage in all three of these practices in the extreme that are truly in a dangerous position. 17
The study’s authors surveyed 15,395 students and analyzed nine risk behaviors, including excessive alcohol use, illegal drug use, heavy smoking and high media use. 18 The group that scored high on all nine of the risk behaviors was most likely to show symptoms of depression; in all, nearly 15% of this group reported being depressed, compared with just 4% of the low-risk group. But the invisible group wasn’t far behind the high-risk set, with more than 13% of them exhibiting depression.
The findings caught Carli off guard. “We didn’t expect that,” he says. “The high-risk group and low-risk group are obvious, but this third group was not only unexpected. 19
Carli says that one of the most significant things about his study is that it provides new early warning signs for parents, teachers and mental health-care providers. 20
A. Because their behaviors are not usually seen as a red flag, these young people have been called the “invisible risk” group by the study’s authors.
B. Their aim was to determine the relationship between these risk behaviors and mental health issues in teenagers.
C. Of course, that may sound like a description of every teenager on the planet.
D. It was so distinct and so larger — nearly one third of our sample — that it became a key finding of the study.”
E. It was intended to dig into the reasons for depression.
F. And early identifications, support and treatment for mental health issues, he says, are the best ways to keep them from turning into full-blown disorders.
G. A teenager who suffers from a lack of sleep may have a high risk of depression.

Getting around is easy, too. The city’s neighborhoods are walkable, and its public transport network efficient and cheap.
【答案】7. B 8. D 9. A 10. C
【导语】本文是议论文。主要讨论了社交媒体算法对青少年和儿童的影响,特别是它们如何影响孩子们的探索和发现能力,以及由此产生的心理健康问题。
7. 细节理解题。根据第一段“Kids are even more in the bag of social media companies than we think. Many of them have given away their online autonomy fully to their phones. For them, the only acceptable online environment is one designed by big tech algorithms (算法). (孩子们比我们想象的更容易受到社交媒体公司的影响。他们中的许多人已经把上网的自主权完全交给了手机。对他们来说,唯一可以接受的网络环境是由大型科技算法设计的。)”可知,社交媒体公司对孩子们有很大的影响。故选B项。
8. 细节理解题。根据第三段“There are countless problems with children and teenagers using social media.
根据倒数第二段“What the kids I spoke to did not know is that these algorithms have been designed in a way that unavoidably makes and keeps users unhappy. Social media companies know that content that generates negative feelings holds our attention longer than that which makes us feel good. (与我交谈的孩子们不知道的是,这些算法的设计方式不可避免地会让用户不满意。社交媒体公司知道,产生负面情绪的内容比让我们感觉良好的内容更能吸引我们的注意力。)”可知,社交媒体公司更喜欢产生负面情绪的内容,因为这有助于他们获得更多用户的关注。故选A项。
10. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“We should take some measures. Teenagers and kids are to be inspired to determine if we will really be happier as a species when machines and algorithms do all the work for us, or if fulfillment only comes when humans actually do the work, searching and discovering, of being human. (我们应该采取一些措施。青少年和孩子们应该受到启发,去决定,当机器和算法为我们做所有的工作时,我们作为一个物种是否真的会更快乐,或者只有当人类真正去做作为人类的工作,去寻找和发现时,我们才会得到满足。)”可知,应该鼓励青少年和儿童探索和发现生活的满足感来改变现状。故选C项。
【答案】11. A 12. C 13. B 14. C
【导语】本文是一篇议论文。作者通过个人的面试经历引出了一个关于教育理念的讨论,特别是关于青少年面对失败的态度以及当前教育系统如何处理学生失败的问题。
11. 推理判断题。由文章第一段“I ask every student I interview for admission to my institution, Pitzer College, the same question,“ What do you look forward to the most in college?” I was amazed and delighted recently when a student sat across from me at a Starbucks in New York City and replied, “I look forward to the possibility of failure.” Of course, this is not how most students respond to the question when sitting before the person who can make decisions about their academic futures, but this young man took a risk. (我在Pitzer College面试每一个学生时都会问同样的问题:“你在大学里最期待什么?”最近,在纽约的一家星巴克,一个学生坐在我对面回答我:“我期待着失败的可能性。”这让我既惊讶又高兴。当然,大多数学生坐在能决定他们学术前途的人面前时,并不是这样回答这个问题的,但这个年轻人冒了一个险)”和文章第三段中的“These days, finding imperfections in a college application is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Students try their best to hide factors they regard as negative and only tell us things they believe we will find impressive. (如今,在大学申请中寻找缺陷就像大海捞针一样困难。学生们尽力隐藏他们认为消极的因素,只告诉我们他们认为会给我们留下深刻印象的事情)”可知,学生们在面试中通常会尽力展示他们的优点,隐藏他们认为负面的因素。故选A。
12. 推理判断题。由文章第三段“These days, finding imperfections in a college application is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Students try their best to hide factors they regard as negative and only tell us things they believe we will find impressive. This is supported by a secondary school culture where teachers are under pressure to give students nothing less than an A, and are told not to report disciplinary infractions (违纪) to colleges. Education agents in other countries are known to falsify student transcripts (成绩单), assuming that outstanding grades are the ticket to admission.
由文章第四段中的“The ability to bounce (回弹) back is an essential life skill students have to learn on their own. The lessons of failure can’t be taught in a classroom; they are experienced and reflected upon. (重新振作起来的能力是学生们必须自学的一项基本生活技能。失败的教训不能在教室里教授;他们经历和反思)”可知,作者认为处理失败的能力是一个学生需要自己学习的重要生活技能。故选B。
14. 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段中的“I was amazed and delighted recently when a student sat across from me at a Starbucks in New York City and replied,“Ilook forward to the possibility of failure.” Of course, this is not how most students respond to the question when sitting before the person who can make decisions about their academic futures, but this young man took a risk. (最近,在纽约的一家星巴克,一个学生坐在我对面回答我:“我期待着失败的可能性。”这让我既惊讶又高兴。当然,大多数学生坐在能决定他们学术前途的人面前时,并不是这样回答这个问题的,但这个年轻人冒了一个险)”和最后一段“Failure is about growth, learning, overcoming, and moving on. Let’s allow young people to fail. Not only will they learn something, it might even get them into college. (失败是成长、学习、克服和继续前进的过程。让我们允许年轻人失败。他们不仅会学到一些东西,甚至可能会进入大学)”可知,整篇文章通过一个学生期待在大学里体验失败的例子,引出当前教育体系下学生被过度保护,缺乏面对和处理失败的机会的问题,并强调了失败对于个人成长和学习的重要性,最终呼吁应允许年轻人经历失败。由此可知,选项C“If you want to get into college, learn to fail. (如果你想上大学,就要学会面对失败)” 最能概括文章的主旨。故选C。

【答案】23. A 24. C 25. B 26. D

However, many other studies show that overly-heavy social media use can lead to a lot of problems, like physical and mental problems.(研究表明,30分钟可能是使用社交媒体的最佳时间,在这段时间里,用户可以与朋友和家人保持联系,并观看娱乐节目。然而,许多其他研究表明,过度使用社交媒体会导致很多问题,比如身体和精神问题)”可知,TikTok会对青少年设置屏幕时间限制是为了防止过度使用社交媒体。故选A。
24. 推理判断题。根据第三段“Although these passwords for older teenagers can obviously be bypassed, they are a step in the right direction in encouraging children to use social media responsibly.(虽然年龄较大的青少年显然可以绕过这些密码,但这是鼓励孩子们负责任地使用社交媒体的正确方向)”可知,作者对TikTok的新政策持支持态度。故选C。
25. 细节理解题。根据第四段“In addition, parents who own their own TikTok accounts will be able to link with their children’s accounts, gaining additional controls, such as muting notifications (消息免打扰) and customizing time limits for different days in the week.(此外,拥有自己的抖音帐户的父母将能够与孩子的帐户链接,获得额外的控制,例如静音通知和定制一周中不同日子的时间限制)”可知,父母可以通过自己的账户设定时间限制来帮助孩子负责任地使用社交媒体。故选B。
26. 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Lawmakers around the world are paying close attention to the effect social media has on the young, meaning that the development of new tools to improve its use will no doubt take place soon if big tech wishes to avoid additional legal problems.(世界各地的立法者都在密切关注社交媒体对年轻人的影响,这意味着,如果大型科技公司希望避免更多的法律问题,改善社交媒体使用的新工具的开发无疑将很快展开)”可知,关于社交媒体,最后一段主要讲了对其改进的法律压力。故选D。
【答案】27. A 28. B 29. C 30. D
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了近年来,研究开始显示青少年使用社交媒体与幸福感下降之间存在因果关系。关于这种联系,被引用最多的一项研究集中在Facebook上。

【答案】39. D 40. B 41. C 42. C

They are also more eager to find out effective parenting methods to help them raise well-behaved and confident children.(这种资源的增加使父母更多地参与到孩子的学业、情感和社会发展中。他们也更渴望找到有效的育儿方法,帮助他们培养出行为端正、自信的孩子)”可知,资源的增加让父母更积极地参与孩子的发展。故选D。
40. 词句猜测题。根据划线词前文“A modern parenting style that has appeared is helicopter parenting, where parents are too much focused on their children. They help children with tasks that children can do on their own, like selecting activities and friends for them, or calling their teachers about homework matters.(现代出现的一种育儿方式是直升机育儿,即父母过于关注孩子。他们帮助孩子完成一些孩子可以自己完成的任务,比如为他们选择活动和朋友,或者打电话给老师讨论家庭作业问题)”及后文“the development of the children’s ability to handle responsibilities independently. Children might be ill-equipped with life skills such as making the bed, clearing their plates or doing their schoolwork.(孩子独立处理责任的能力。孩子们可能不具备一些生活技能,比如叠床、收拾盘子或做作业)”可知,过于关注孩子的父母为孩子打点一切,会阻碍孩子独立处理责任的能力。划线词与hold back“抑制、阻碍”意思相近。故选B。
41. 细节理解题。根据最后一段“On the other hand, parents in the past tended to monitor less. Children were given more freedom to manage their schoolwork and choose the friends they want to play with.(另一方面,过去的父母往往监控较少。孩子们有了更多的自由来管理他们的学业,选择他们想要一起玩的朋友)”可知,过去的父母给孩子们更多的自我成长空间。故选C。

D. If used well, social media can create opportunities for teenagers to develop themselves.
【答案】43. B 44. D 45. D

45. 推理判断题。根据Opening new doors下第一段“However, Armin Korsos, a student from Illinois, takes advantage of the comments he receives over social media to improve his videos on the social networking site Youtube. (然而,来自伊利诺伊州的学生Armin Korsos利用社交媒体上收到的评论来改进他在社交网站Youtube上的视频)”和第二段““Social media can help people show themselves and their talents to the world in a way that was never possible before,” Korsos said.
A. Art: a comfort for imperfect lives
B. Baroque tradition: a dying art form
C. An artist’s first teacher: her grandfather
D. An artist’s life: sources of inspiration
【答案】50. B 51. B 52. A 53. C

Zacatelco carries on his legacy (遗产) today with her art.(但他的艺术精神并没有随着他的去世而消逝。 所以C项“An artist’s first teacher: her grandfather(艺术家的启蒙老师:她的祖父)”是本文最好的标题。故选C项。

A. It was taller than the author.
B. Its price rose from $50 to $450.

【答案】54. D 55. D 56. C 57. C

54. 细节理解题。根据第一段的“The smooth bullet-nosed engine with its orange and yellow lines and shiny streamlined black tender (煤水车) seemed to completely occupy my mind.(流畅的子弹头发动机,橙色和黄色的线条,以及闪亮的流线型黑色嫩车似乎完全占据了我的脑海)”和第二段的“Even better, the 746 had a working headlight and smoker, and its tender sang high.(更棒的是,746有一个工作的前灯和吸烟者,它的温柔唱得很高)可知,746在作者眼中是无比美丽的,有着流线型的设计、鲜艳的颜色以及多项功能。故选D。
55. 推理判断题。根据第三段的“Instead, I had to be content with his little Lionel plastic, which was SIX INCHES shorter than the 746 and had no headlight, no smoker or no sound!(相反,我不得不满足于他的小Lionel塑料,它比746短6英寸,没有前灯,没有烟头,也没有声音!)”可知,在作者看来,这个小Lionel 塑料和746相比差得太多。由此可推知,当作者收到他的小Lionel 塑料制品时,稍微有点不满意。故选D。
56. 推理判断题。根据第四段的“Years passed, and I was in my 30s.Complicated sound systems and computer controls dominated toy trains. I never gave a look. My interest in toy trains, I firmly believed, had faded, so did my admiration for the 746, since my grandfather was not with me. The 746 was never called to mind.(几年过去了,我30多岁了。复杂的音响系统和电脑控制主导了玩具火车,我根本没看它一眼。我坚信,自从祖父不在我身边,我对玩具火车的兴趣已经消退,我对746的倾慕也没有了,我再也没有想起746)”可推知,作者30多岁时,因为祖父不在了,所以他尽量不去回忆过去。故选C。
57. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“That day I took the 746 home and placed it in the centre of the room, and let my childhood dream sing its way around me. Smoke rose out from the engine and the soft song sounded from its tender. It seemed as if I could see the soft light in my grandfather’s eyes and hear his cheerful laughter.(那天,我把746带回家,放在房间的中央,让我儿时的梦想在我周围歌唱。烟从发动机里冒了出来,温柔的歌声从发动机里响起。我似乎能看到祖父眼中柔和的光芒,听到他欢快的笑声)”可推知,作者对746的喜爱其实从未改变,重新得到746让他重新连接到那份深藏的热爱。故选C。

However, trying to live up to strict standards can make us feel anxious. What troubles us is not just our “imperfect” looks, but the fact that we criticize ourselves too much.

A. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.

C. Guys care just as much as girls do about their body image.

【答案】6. D 7. G 8. E 9. C 10. A
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了基于科学研究的大量证据表明久坐对健康有害,建议在久坐的情况下进行轻度的活动,同时可以限制青少年的屏幕时间,减少他们坐着的时间。
6. 前文“There is increasing evidence that sitting down too much can be a risk to our health. (越来越多的证据表明,久坐会对我们的健康造成危害)”指出久坐对健康有害是有证据支撑的,因此D项“Most of the evidence is based on scientific studies. (大多数证据都是基于科学研究)”符合语境,说明证据的来源,承接前文,其中的evidence在前文有同词复现。故选D。
7. 后文“Being overweight and obese, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancers are the most common ones. (超重和肥胖、2型糖尿病、心脏病和某些类型的癌症是最常见的)”介绍了一些最常见的疾病,因此G项“Studies have linked being inactive with health problems. (研究表明,不运动与健康问题有关)”符合语境,指出不运动与健康问题之间的关联,后文的疾病是在列举具体的健康问题。故选G。
8. 前文“Experts recommend breaking up long periods of sitting time with light activities, for example, walking, jogging, swimming and so on. (让卧室成为没有电视、电子设备、笔记本电脑和手机的地方)”等提供了具体的方法,因此C项“Here are some tips to reduce their sitting time. (以下是一些减少久坐时间的建议)”符合语境,承前启后,引出后文具体的方法,其中的their指代前文的children and teenagers aged 5 to 18。故选C。
10. 空处位于段首,需引出段落内容。根据后文“Researches seem to point to the fact that less sitting and more moving contribute to better health. We might start by simply standing rather than sitting when we have the chance. (研究似乎指出,少坐多动有助于身体健康。如果有机会,我们可以从站着开始,而不是坐着)”可知,本段主要建议少坐多动,从站着开始保持健康,因此A项“Anyway, move more, sit less.
