On Saturday morning, all the summer world was sweet and fresh. There was cheer in every face and a spring in every step, except Tom Sawyer.
Aunt Polly made him paint their fence (栅栏) as a punishment. It was 90 feet long and 9 feet high. He stared at the fence, and all gladness left him. He painted one board and stopped. “This will take forever,” he sighed (叹气).
He knew the boys with all kinds of toys would soon come along and make fun of him —the very thought of it burnt him like fire. At this dark and hopeless moment, an idea came to him! He went back to work quietly.
Ben Rogers came along the road. He was singing happily and carrying a big apple.
Tom went on painting—paid no attention to him. Ben stared a moment and called Tom.
No answer. Tom surveyed his last touch with the eye of an artist, then he gave his brush another gentle sweep. Ben called him again.
“Why, it’s you, Ben! I wasn’t noticing.” Tom turned suddenly and said.
“I’m going to swim,” said Ben. “Do you want to come? Oh, you have to work, don’t you? What a pity!”
“I’m not working.” Tom answered carelessly. “Well, maybe it is working, but I like it.”
“What?” shouted Ben. “You like it?”
“Well, I don’t see why I shouldn’t,” Tom kept painting, and said. “Boys don’t get to paint a fence every day.”
That put the thing in a new light. Ben stopped eating his apple and watched Tom for a while. Tom swept his brush gently back and forth. The fence looked clean and white. Before long. Ben really wanted to paint, too! “Let me try a little,” he begged (乞求) Tom.
Tom considered, “No, Ben, I can’t. Aunt Polly warned me to do it well. Only one boy in a thousand has the talent to paint.”
“Oh, please, Tom,” said Ben. “I can do it. I’ll be very careful. I’ll give you half my apple. Wait, I’ll give you all of it.”
Tom gave Ben his brush with worry on his face but joy in his heart. Tom rested under the tree. He ate the apple and smiled.

At just 14 years old, Ryan Hickman from San Juan Hills High School, US , has made a beach clean-up campaign (运动). On April 20, he and many volunteers from Project 3R, the nonprofit (非营利机构) he created, started a five-week campaign to remove rubbish from five beaches along the Southern California coast and some in Mexico.
“The rubbish ends up in the ocean, and animals are eating it,” Hickman told The Orange County Register. “Picking up a piece of rubbish may save a whale’s life.”
Ryan first learned about the impacts of pollution at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach, which has been saving sea lions and seals for more than 40 years. Watching the animals improve encouraged him to think about what he could do to help.
From a young age, Ryan had developed a love for recycling and had always liked rubbish trucks. He put the two interests together and began raising money by collecting recyclables. In 2017, Ryan handed a $10,000 (about 72,000 yuan) check over to the PMMC after picking up 50,000 pounds of rubbish and more than 200,000 recyclable bottles.
Along with organizing volunteer cleanups, Ryan has also traveled worldwide, speaking to kids about caring for the planet and oceans. At the Ocean Institute in California, he started a program where primary school students clean local beaches and then board the institute’s teaching ship to learn about pollution’s impact.
“It’s fun,” he said. “The people I talk to ... it may influence them, and they might organize a cleanup, too.”

London is the capital of England and is one of the most famous cities in Europe. It has many fantastic sights, such as Big Ben and London Bridge. Besides, there are more than 170 museums there.
I was only in London for one gray day, so I was in a hurry. My tour started at a building known as the Cheese Grater. Its a new building and was completed in 2010. It has a height of 225m. We took the lift right to the top. It is the fastest lift in Europe. It took just 30 seconds to go all the way up to the 45th floor.
Next, we walked just a few blocks to The Gherkin. It really does look like a cucumber of a different size! It’s 180m tall and has 41 floors. It was built in 2003.
Our next stop was Tower Bridge. It was built from 1886 to 1894 and looks old. It has a height of 54m, and a length of 244m. We walked on it to cross the river to get to our next destination: The Shard.
The Shard is the tallest building in the United Kingdom. It was opened in 2009. It cost 435 million pounds to build. It’s just under 310m tall and has 96 floors. There is a place where you can look at the view on the 72nd floor.
St. Paul’s Cathedral is on the other side of the river. It was started in 1256! It has survived several wars. It is 158m long and 111m tall. It is old and really beautiful. Unfortunately, the rainy weather put a sudden end to our tour.

This April marks 460 years since the birth of William Shakespeare. What do you know about this great writer? Shakespeare was born in a town of England, in 1564. The exact date of his birth is not known, but it has long been celebrated on April 23.
Shakespeare had three younger brothers and two younger sisters. His father was a glove maker. He got married at the age of 18. What he did for the next ten years is unknown. Some people think he was a teacher. Others think he was a lawyer.
By 1592, Shakespeare was working as a writer and actor in London. That year, a big illness kept the city’s theaters closed most of the time. He then turned to writing poetry. His poems were very popular.
Two years later, London’s theaters reopened. Then he joined an acting group called Lord Chamberlain’s Men. They often performed plays for royalty (王室成员). Later, Shakespeare opened a famous local theater with others. This brought him a lot of money.
Shakespeare wrote at least 37 plays in 20 years. They were of different types. His most famous tragedies include Hamlet and King Lear. Among his comedies are A Midsummer Night’s Dream and As You Like It. His historical plays are about some kings of England.

Life’s greatest lesson for Granny Hu can be found in a cup of the green tea she has grown and spent most of her life: the bitter comes before the sweet, and she has known both. She was good at growing things from at least age 14. She loved the soil and worked in her gardens until she was 113. “My grandma is quick-witted and hard-working. She was better at planting crops than others, so in the years when there were shortages of food she was able to support the family,” his grandson said. Granny Hu is the oldest person in her village and she experienced all the hardships during the life. “I have lost my husband, my children and my brothers, but I couldn’t lose myself in sadness. Luckily, I can always find love in my family and that is how I was encouraged to carry on.”
Another centenarian (百岁老人), Granny Yang, gave birth to eight children. “In the darkest days, we didn’t have enough food to support the big family, so I went into the mountains to look for food to feed my children instead of giving them away, as many people did,” she said, “no one in my family was allowed to shout or scream at each other. My children grew up in peace.” What’s more, she helped her children get a better education. “Education is the best soil to support children’s growth and will improve themselves for a lifetime.”
The poor life inspires a strong wish for change. That’s the most important lesson that Grandpa Dong said he has learned in life. Like most older people in China, he expected to spend his life farming. However, because of the wars, he was driven out of his farm. He spent nearly 10 years to make his way home. The condition in his home was more terrible than that before he left. To improve the poor life, he left his farm again to look a new way to make a living. He did business and he finally made a comfortable living. This 108-year-old man gives his advice to others: “Don’t be afraid of change.”
All these centenarians have one thing in common—The quickest way to happiness and long life is to do nothing negative. Have a joyful heart and be kind to others. If you want to live up to be 100 years old, try their ways!

Have you ever paid attention to your school’s security guards or dining hall staff? Would you say “Good morning” to your school’s cleaners? For high school student Ding Jiacheng, it’s a problem that many students ignore (忽视) the important jobs done by these non-teaching workers. He wanted to make a change.
The boy from Hangzhou International Foreign Language School, together with several other students, worked on a project called “The Invisible (隐身的) are Significant”. They hoped more students would see and respect the “invisible” staff on campus. The project won a prize at China Thinks Big, a competition held by Harvard University and Tsinghua University to encourage teenagers to study social issues.
“My team members and I sent questionnaires (问卷) to 158 students,” said Ding. “In one question, 56 percent of the students said they would greet those non-teaching workers, while only 17 percent strongly believed that every student should do so.”
The team also studied relationship between students and workers. “When most students follow the rules of their teachers, one-third of the students go against the rules of the dormitory attendants (宿舍管理员),” said Ding. “It shows that students treat non-teaching staff differently from teaching staff.”
The main reason, according to Ding, is that students know little about the work done by non-teaching staff. They also have few chances to communicate with them. Therefore, Ding’s team shot videos to show staff working around campus. They also held a basketball match between students and non-teaching staff to increase their relationship.
“We’ve also made a series of stickers (贴纸),” said Ding. “We hope these cute images will help young people like the non-teaching staff more.”

Friends are very important in our everyday life. Everyone needs friends. We all want to be close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh and share things with each other.
Of course, no two people are just the same. Friends sometimes don’t get on well. We can also make new friends. It is encouraging to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them.
When I was young, I started to change schools because mom changed her jobs. Once again, I was at a new school. So was a girl in my class named Paris. That was where the similarities (相似处) ended.
I was tall and she was small. I was one of the oldest in the class while she was the youngest. My hair was thick, short and ugly while hers was long and beautiful. I was shy. She wasn’t. I couldn’t stand her, considering her my enemy. But she wanted to be friends.
One day, she invited me over and I said yes. I was too surprised to refuse her invitation. Actually, no one had invited me over to play before. But this girl wanted to see me.
She lived on the fourth floor in a two-room apartment with her big family. When we got to the room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies, which was really surprising. I had never played with them. But we sat on the floor laughing as we made up crazy stories about the Barbies. That’s when we found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older. We both had wild imaginations. We had a great time that afternoon.
She charmed the whole neighborhood. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines, the movie theater gave her free passes and the pizza place let her have free slices (薄片).

My teachers discovered my paper-thin, worn-out clothes, my bad body smell, the countless hurts and burns, and why I hunted for food from dustbins. My second-grade teacher, Ms. Moss, asked the headmaster for help. The next morning, my mother, an alcoholic (酒鬼), and the headmaster had a private meeting. Then Ms. Moss lost her job and I never saw her again.
Things went worse. I lived in the downstairs garage, did all chores, but received almost no food. My mother even changed my name “David” into “it”, and punished my brothers if they gave me food, used my real name or even looked at me.
My only safe haven (港湾) was my teachers. They did their best to make me feel like a normal child. Sitting in the garage and shivering from the cold, I closed my eyes, pictured my teacher’s face and felt warm inside.
One Friday afternoon, I looked at my head teacher, Mr. Ziegler. I knew he felt my pain. I bowed my head in respect, somehow hoping for a wonder.
On March 5, 1973, my hopes were answered. Four teachers, the school nurse and the headmaster decided to ask the local govemment for help. Because of my condition, I was immediately placed into protective custody (监护). Before I left, they hugged me one by one. ▲ They reminded me of Ms. Moss. As a child called “it”, I felt I wasn’t worth their trouble.
One teacher gently whispered, “No matter the result, whatever happens to us, this is something we must do. As teachers…if we can influence one child’s life… This is the true meaning of our job.”
After a round of goodbyes, with tears running down my face, I promised I’d never forget them and do my best to make them proud someday.
On March 5, 1993, I returned to Thomas Edtison Elementary and presented my teachers with my first book, A Child Called “I”. I looked at them, tears running down their faces, and said, “As a child I learned that teachers have but one goal: to somehow make a difference in a child’s life. My four teachers, school nurse and headmaster risked their jobs to save the life of a child called ‘it’. I cannot, will not forget their courage and belief. Holly gets a pet dog. She’s so happy, and the dog is happy, too! “I want to call him Eco,” says Holly. “Come here, Eco!” And Eco wags (摇摆) his tail.
“That dog is your responsibility (责任), Holly,” says her father. “No problem!” Holly agrees.
Before school, Holly takes Eco for his first morning walk. She feels very tired. It’s really cold and dark—and it’s so early! But Eco doesn’t mind. He runs, stops, runs again, sees a black cat, tries to run after it and nearly pulls Holly off her feet!
Holly realizes it’s late when she gets back from the walk. She quickly eats a piece of bread, takes her bag and jacket, and runs to school.
What a busy morning! But that’s not all for looking after a pet dog.
When Holly takes Eco for his evening walk, it’s quite dark outside. Holly feels nervous. She runs along the road with him, but it’s difficult. Because Eco often stops to study the bushes and trees. And he often tries to catch birds, or play with sticks and fallen leaves.
A few days go by. Then…
It’s raining outside. Eco enters…and the trouble starts. Eco’s dirty paws leave prints everywhere, on the floor, on the blanket, on the sofa…“Come here, Eco!” says Holly. She wants to stop him, but it doesn’t work.
Holly gets really angry now. She decides to punish Eco. So that night Eco is kept in the green house alone.
When Holly enters the green house next morning, it’s a disaster. Her mum’s plants and flowers are lying on their sides or on the floor. And the pots (花盆) are broken into a hundred pieces. And Eco is sitting in the soil and leaves.
“Oh, no,” says Holly. She realizes it’s time to train the dog. “He needs to know the rules.”
Every day after school, Holly repeats simple orders to Eco. If he can do as ordered, he can get nice bones. The amazing thing is, Eco really enjoys it. For him, it’s one big game.

Whenever I tell people that I teach English at the Berlin (柏林) Zoo, I almost always get a questioning look because of my job. Behind it, the person is trying to find out who exactly I teach...the animals?
Since June 2017, right before the arrival of the two new giant pandas, Meng Meng and Jiao Qing, I have been helping the panda keepers at the zoo to feel more comfortable and confident speaking English. And why do they need English? Who do they speak English with?
Not the pandas, even though the language that is used for the medical training instructions is actually English. They talk to the crowd of international visitors and to visiting Chinese zookeepers who often come to check on the pandas, which are on loan (租借) from China. As you know, English is widely spoken in the world while German isn’t. They also need to be ready to give interviews in English with international reporters. This is why they need an English trainer.
So what are they learning? Basically, how to describe a panda’s life. And here’s what I’ve learned from them so far:
Note 1: Pandas eat bamboo, lots of bamboo! They can eat up to 30 kilograms a day, and when they’re not eating, they’re sleeping.
Note 2: The two of them live in separate enclosures at the zoo because that is how they live in nature.
Note 3: Giant pandas come from the cool, foggy mountains of south-western China.
Note 4: They are endangered, with fewer than 2, 000 of them living in the wild today.
It’s been an honor to watch the panda program develop and to see the pandas get used to their new home. As a little girl, I wanted to be a zookeeper when I grew up. Now, I’m living out that dream indirectly by helping the panda keepers do their job in English.

①The world’s highest ski place, Chacaltaya, was closed after the 18,000-year-old glacier melted (冰川融化) in 2009. Many scientists agree that the glaciers around the world could disappear in this century, much faster than we thought.
②As we all know, the reason for this is global (全球的) warming. When certain gas such as carbon dioxide (CO₂) is largely emitted (排放) into the atmosphere, it causes the greenhouse effect (效应) which makes Earth warmer.
③As Earth becomes warmer, glaciers melt quickly, and dark rocks are uncovered. Then these rocks take in more heat, causing the temperature to rise. As a result, the remaining snow on glaciers melts faster.
④The effects of global warming will be far-reaching and often devastating (毁灭性的). While the melting of glaciers may flood (淹没) some areas of Earth, in other places, it is making water disappear. An increasing number of heat waves and droughts (干旱) worldwide will also change the face of the world in the future.
⑤Global warming is a real problem, and one largely caused by human activity. Solving the problem is not easy, and there is no single magic way. However, we can begin it by lowering the amount of CO₂ in our daily lives.
⑥Peter Miller, along with his wife, took part in a scientific test to see how much CO₂ they could cut down in a month. The average (平均) U.S. household produces about 80 kilos of CO₂, which was more than twice the European average and almost five times the global average. Their final goal was to make less CO₂ than most American families.
⑦First, they found out how much CO₂ they were producing. Then they asked an expert for advice on how to reduce CO₂ emissions. According to the expert’s advice, they made some changes to their house, replaced their lights, and changed some of their living habits. At the same time, they either biked, walked, or used public transportation. A month later, they saved 70% on electricity, 40% on gas, and drove half as much as others. Their daily CO₂ emissions were less than the U.S. average, at 32 kilos.
⑧Protecting our planet starts small: change a light, open a window, walk or bike. With a little effort, and not much money, most of us can make a difference.
41.Why was the ski place, Chacaltaya, closed in 2009?
A.Because the ski place was too old. B.Because few tourists came to this place.
C.Because the ski place was too high to reach. D.Because the 18,000-year-old glacier melted.
42.How does the writer show that Peter succeeded in the scientific test?
A.By listing numbers. B.By asking questions.
C.By giving explanations. D.By giving suggestions.
43.Which of the following can match the information in the passage?
A. B.
C. D.
44.Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?
A. B.
C. D.
After 10 years of difficult talks, nearly 200 countries agreed to a new United Nations (UN) agreement to protect the world’s oceans. The agreement has been the first of its kind in 40 years. It plans to protect 30% of the open oceans by 2030.
Oceans cover about 71% of the Earth’s surface and are home to hundreds of thousands of different kinds of animals and plants. Healthy oceans are a very important part of a healthy planet. But the oceans are in trouble. Overfishing (捕捞过度) has had a terrible effect on many kinds of fish and other animals. Pollution from ships and other places has caused serious problems. In 1982, an agreement described the “ high seas (公海)”, but it did not protect them. In these areas, all countries have the right to fish, send ships, and do research. The high seas cover about two-thirds of the ocean. But now people only protect 1.2% of the areas.
Last December, over 110 countries agreed to protect 30% of their land and ocean areas by 2030. Without an international agreement, there was no way to make this goal meaningful for the whole ocean. The new agreement now makes this feasible.
The new agreement tries to turn 30% of the high seas into protected areas by 2030. It also says that activities planned for the high seas must first be examined to see what kind of influences they might have on the ocean environment. Businesses in some countries hope to make a lot of money by getting valuable things from the bottom of the sea. Other businesses hope to find plants or animals in the ocean that could lead to new discoveries and new medicines.
Many of the disagreements were about how valuable things would be shared between rich countries and poor ones. Poor countries wanted to make sure that the valuable things would help everyone, not just people in rich countries.

①More researchers are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor the enivironment and support endangered creatures. Unlike traditional methods that can damage the environment or require considerable (相当多的) time and physical work, AI has the ability to quickly and effectively deal with large quantities of data (数据). Let’s learn more details together.
②Creatures are disappearing at a speed thousands of times faster than that millions of years ago, with one million creatures endangered. The United Nations set a goal in 2020 to safeguard at least 30% of Earth’s land and oceans by the end of 2030. “AI is imperfect but could make important discoveries faster and earlier.” says Nicolas Mialhe, founder of The Future Society, an organization that aims to better manage Al. “We need skilled humans to design AI models and check and collect data.”
③A type of AI model called a convolutional neural network (CNN) has been developed to recognize bird sounds. The CNN is able to pick out 75 kinds of the birds the researchers have. “Our results prove that AI is ready for recognizing creatures in the wild from sound.” says Maller, the team leader. “All that is needed now is more training data collected by humans.”
④Besides monitoring creatures in real time, AI can be used to model the impacts of human activities on the environment and rebuild historical changes. Researchers have used AI to discover how a century’s environmental damage in a river has led to creature loss.
⑤Although it is well-known that human activities have resulted in creature loss in rivers and lakes, little is known about which activities have the largest impact. “AI will do soon,” says Luisa Orsini, a researcher from the University of Birmingham.
49.What can we infer from the words Nicolas Miailhe’s and Maller’s said?
A.AI models can be designed by everyone. B.AI models have alreadly developed perfectly.
C.AI’s ability needs CNN to discover and achieve. D.AI’s ability is much greater than what people imagine.

52.Which of the following is true according to the article?
A.Al is only used in monitoring the environment and support endangered creatures.
B.Researchers have already prevented a century’s environmental damage in a river.
C.Creatures are disappearing faster than before with one million creatures endangered.
D.Al has spent more time dealing with large quantities of data than traditional methods.
Human activity is changing the surface and temperature of our planet. But new research shows it is also changing the sound of oceans and seas. Scientists say these changes may have an effect on many sea animals—from very small fish to huge whales.
Sound travels very far underwater. For fish, sound is a better way to sense their environment than light. They use sounds to communicate with each other. Sounds also help some ocean animals find food and avoid their hunters. Sounds help fish and other sea animals survive.
However, increased noise from humans is making it harder for these animals to hear each other. The noise comes from shipping traffic, underwater oil and gas exploration and other noisy human activities.
Experts say that effects of noise on sea animals are not well understood. However, some studies suggest that noise may cause hearing loss. The stress from human noise might also affect the immune (免疫) system. Many sea animals are showing higher levels of stress because of noise. Also, the number of sea animals has gone down by about half since 1970. In some parts of the ocean, scientists now record fewer animals singing and calling than in the past.
When people think of threats (威胁) facing the ocean, we often think of climate change, plastics and overfishing. But noise pollution is another necessary thing we need to consider. When it comes to something humans can do for the ocean, we need to think about how to make it quieter. Sound pollution may be easier to deal with than other ocean threats. You can reduce or turn off sound at once.
53.Sound is important for ocean animals for many reasons, except _________.
A.they use it to communicate
B.they use it to find food
C.they use it to see their environment
D.they use it to avoid hunters
54.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Swimming in the sea will cause noise pollution.
B.Noise does more harm to sea animals than humans realize.
C.There is little that humans can do to reduce noise pollution.
D.Plastic pollution is the biggest threat facing oceans and seas.
55.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
56.According to the article, which of the following statements is not true?
A.Noise has an effect on huge whales as well as small fish.
B.Ocean animals might not hear each other because of increased noise from humans.
C.Many sea animals don’t have much pressure as humans.
D.Plastics or climate change are much harder to solve than noise pollution.
As we all know that recycling is a way to take rubbish and turn it into new products. It’s good for our environment.
There are a number of different recycling steps that allow materials to be used more than once. All kinds of materials can be recycled. Some of the most common things in use today include recycling plastic, glass, metals and paper. Things made of these materials include soda cans, plastic milk boxes, newspapers, computers and cardboard boxes.
Be sure to recycle everything you can in your house and school. There is almost a “recycle” rubbish can around. Be sure to drop your used aluminum (铝) cans and plastic bottles there. At home, be sure to put paper things like the newspapers, paper boxes and homework pages into the recycle box. Plastics are usually marked with an identification code (标识码) that shows a recycling symbol and a number from 1 to 7. This shows that the type of chemicals (化学品), or materials, is used in making the plastic. Used paper can be recycled around seven times.
Also we should set up a recycle station in every street, across the city and the country, so the cleaners can transport the rubbish conveniently. This is the only way out for handling rubbish without causing danger to the environment and our health.
Remember: There are a number of advantages for recycling. These include: Landfills——Recycling materials means less rubbish and saves space in landfills. Resources——When we use materials again, this means we can take fewer resources from the earth. Pollution——In general, recycling materials can produce less pollution. Helping to keep our environment clean. So, for ourselves, our children and our children’s children, let’s take action NOW!

Around the world, people are more and more worried about the environment. Many people now prefer products and companies (公司) that care about the earth and cause less pollution. This need for green products has led large companies to change their business.
Before, customers used cheap plastic (塑料) bags, and then threw them away. But now most supermarkets and stores usually provide reusable shopping bags for them. This causes less waste. They also offer more local products, because less energy is needed for carrying them from one place to another.
To help lower air pollution, big car factories are looking for other ways to control the amount of oil. Cars that use much less oil are very popular. Many companies are also developing fully electric cars. They produce no air pollution at all. Both kinds of cars have another advantage: They are cheaper to run and people don’t need to worry about oil prices.
The airline companies face an even greater green challenge. Airplanes use much more oil than cars. So many airlines are now developing planes that can run on some other kinds of oil. They create less pollution and cost less. The companies are also developing a new kind of planes, and some of them use only solar panels (太阳能板) to fly!
Green businesses used to be popular with only a small group of people. But now, more and more companies have to show they care about the environment. Many products are marked “green” in order to look nice. However, people still have to be careful when choosing green products. It’s important to make sure the products are as environmentally friendly as the businessmen say.

“Fast fashion” refers to how the clothing industry quickly produces lots of cheap clothes and gets them to stores every few weeks. The practice lets shoppers buy new styles all the time. And clothes prices are low. But many of these clothes quickly wear out or go out of style. Their price tags (标签) also don't include all of the clothes’ environmental costs.
“The problem starts with how we think about fashion,” says Kirsi Niinimaki. She’s a fashion, textile and design researcher. “Everyone nowadays owns too many clothes. And we use them a really short time and then dispose of them,” she says. Even if something stays in your closet for years, you might only end up wearing it some 20 times.
Kirsi was part of a team that looked at many studies on the environmental costs of the fashion industry. They found that this industry caused 8 to 10 percent of the global emissions (排放) of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. The industry is also responsible for about one-fifth of the world’s industrial water pollution. And people produce more than 92 million tons of textile and clothing waste each year, the team found. Its report appeared in the April issue of Nature Reviews.
Fashion is a global industry, as Pietra Rivoli learned. She’s an economist at Georgetown University. Rivoli bought a cotton T-shirt in Florida. The tag said it was made in China. But she learned the factory had gotten most of its cotton from Texas. Used or unwanted T-shirts are often popular in Africa. There, people sold them for reuse. She wrote about her findings in The Travels of a T-shirt in The Global Economy.
The journey of your own clothes from fiber (纤维) to finished products comes with environmental costs. Scıentists and engineers have been working on ways to limit some of these influences.

D.Methods of reducing the environmental costs of the fashion industry.
What do you do with clothes you don’t want to wear any more? You may donate them or give them to other people. What happens next? Where do these clothes end up?
It’s reported that 92 million tons of clothes end up in landfills every year. This means that every second a truck full of clothes arrives at a landfill.
Sadly, the beaches of Ghana, a country in West Africa, are one of these places. Now, the beaches are covered with clothing waste.
People from all over the world donate clothes to charity. However, charity shops only sell up 20 percent of donated clothes, said the Guardian. The unsold clothes are then put in large bags and travel to other countries to be sold again or treated as waste.
The Kantamanto market in Accra, the capital of Ghana, is one of the world’s largest secondhand clothing markets. Every week, 20 million pieces of clothes arrive at Kantamanto. But about 40 percent of them leave the market as waste.
Workers either burn the waste or put it underground. However, the city is near the sea, so there’s not enough space for landfills. This is why a lot of clothing waste ends up on the beach. As it goes into the sea, fish and other sea life are in danger. Sea turtles (海龟) can’t get to the land, and fish can’t grow because they may get caught in the clothes.
The waste is also hurting the economy (经济), Ernest Ijawan, a worker at a landfill in Ghana, told Forbes. Fishers can’t catch as many fish as before since most of the things they catch are clothes.
According to another survey, many fast fashion clothes are worn only 7 to 10 times, and then they are thrown away.
Around 15 years ago, this number was 10 to 15 times. People maybe haven’t realized that our clothes can be bad for the environment. But that’s the fact. So please think twice before we buy clothes or throw them away.
69.The writer explains his point by ________.

C.The reasons why there is so much clothing waste.
D.The introduction of the world’s largest secondhand clothing market.
A young boy is crying because his ear hurts. Then a man comes out of the forest. He carries some juice from a white fungus. Carefully, he drips the juice into the boy’s ear. In some rainforest villages of South America, that’s how earaches are cured (治愈)!
Rainforest doctors, called shamans, use many kinds of plants as medicine. They make tea from one type of red vine (藤蔓). It cures stomachaches. Yellow flowers from another plant are used to treat snakebite. Local shamans have used the curing power of plants for thousands of years.
_________
Today, scientists from all over the world want to learn what these shamans know about plant medicines. They are racing to find the secrets of the rainforest before the plants disappear for good. And the rainforests are disappearing fast. Every year, people cut down an area of rainforest as large as Florida. Sometimes they want to use the land for farms. Sometimes they cut down the trees and sell the wood.
Now the scientists travel by boat, air, and foot to tiny rainforest villages. Then they spend long hours making their way through the hot and humid jungle (丛林) with the local shamans. The shamans show the scientists which plants can be used as cures.
Saving the Rainforest
One U.S. company has already found an important new medicine. It comes from a plant found in the rainforests of Ecuador. This medicine may soon be used to cure lung infections in kids. Rainforest plants might cure many bad diseases, such as cancer and AIDS. So medicine companies are working to save the rainforests. When people buy medicines made from the rainforest plants, part of the money will go to help save the rainforests. If the rainforests survive, someday you may find cures in your home that were made from white fungus and red vines.

①More than 100,000 people cheered at the breathtaking moment when 3,000 drones flew over Chaotianmen on the Chinese New Year Eve. The 15-minute drone show had 300 million views online.
②In fact, drones are easy to operate. People send orders to the control system. Rotors push against the air to make the drone rise or stay in the air. By changing the angle (角度) and the speed of different rotors, the drone flies in all directions.
③Drones can complete difficult and special tasks in a timely and effective way.
④After an earthquake, drones can fly over blocked roads to find people or record any possible danger. Reaching the mountain village by road may take several hours, but drones provide information in just a few minutes.
⑤For weak wildlife populations, drones can show where poachers are hiding and if they are carrying guns. At night, drones with infrared (红外线的) cameras can easily find them in the dark.
⑥Drones also provide convenience for the public. For example, at a sports event, drones are used to give a view from above or help coaches see how their players are doing.
⑦In a word, drones have been widely used in emergency (紧急情况), environmental protection, farming, transportation and others, with more fields on the way.
⑧As drones are cheaper, more practical and less dangerous than planes or helicopters, drone flight activities have become the important driving force for the growth of low-altitude economy (低空经济). Besides well-known leaders like DJI, more pioneering companies have appeared. At the end of last year, there were nearly 1.27 million registered (注册的) drones across the country. On a warm spring day. Liu Song walked past the green wheat fields and through the flower fields before arriving at his office. There, he had a meeting with his team to discuss important village matters.
As a graduate of Zhejiang University, Liu used to work in several big companies (公司). In September 2020, he became the manager of Yong’an Village in Hangzhou City. In the beginning, things were difficult for Liu and his team. The village was poor. Most people made a living only by growing rice.
Having grown up in the countryside, Liu loved the land and the people there. And he knew very well that the village’s real advantage was its large farmland. He and his team tried to help the villagers put it to good use. They introduced new technology for farming. They improved the public services. Tea-bag drinking is most Westerners’ favorite way of drinking tea. Do you know how it came about?
The tea bag was invented in 1908 by Thomas Sullivan, an American tea seller. He was sending out free tea in silk bags for people to try, which made it taste better. People put the bags together with the tea leaves into the cup and added hot water. And after drinking, they just needed to throw the tea bags away. So, they were not happy when Sullivan started sending them loose (散的) tea again.
Sullivan realized that he had a hot new thing in his hands, and he built a machine to pack the bags. As tea bags became popular, they were changed from silk to gauze (薄纱) and later paper. In 1952, Lipton Tea made the tea bag even more popular with its invention of the four-sided tea bag. Tea bags were soon a hit in the UK, and today 85% of tea in the UK is packed in paper bags.
However, some people still prefer loose leaf tea. _____________________

As a child, I spent each Thanksgiving with my large family at my grandparents’ house in Maryland, US. It’s a wooden cabin (小屋) on the side of a hill, deep in the forest.
When my parents and I arrived this Thanksgiving, my aunts, uncles and cousins were already in the cabin. They all came back from all over the country to spend the holiday with the families. Aunt Sue touched my face and told me how big I’d gotten. Uncle Peter gave me a big hug and shouted, “Hello, Calvin!”
The next day, by the time I woke up, Grandma and Mom had already begun cooking. Throughout the day we all helped out. The cabin was small, so we had to make room for everyone to sit at the long table together.
Dinner was finally served at about 4 p.m. Before we ate, Grandma asked each person to say at least one thing that he or she was thankful for. I said, “I’m thankful for my parents, my grandma and the turkey!” I was too hungry to think of anything better. Once everyone was finished speaking, we dug in. It was all delicious food.
After dinner, we took a long walk through the woods around the cabin. Under the late-autumn stars, we made a fire in the field and told stories. I looked back up the hill at the cabin in the moonlight, and one word appeared in my mind: “Thanks”.

TIME announced the 2022 Idol of the Year. 60-year-old Michelle Yeoh was named and made the cover. She used her power to tell everyone that ________.
When it came to how she made it, she especially talked about the power of representation (代表). She said that so far, no Asian women had won the Academy Award for Best Actress, so whenever there was a chance, she would catch it and make every effort to play the role.
However, it’s not that easy to be recognized (赏识). “I’ve been working in this industry (行业) for almost 40 years and to finally be recognized for my work. Before that, I’ve been everywhere and I’ve done everything because there are fewer roles waiting for women as we grow older. And then you find you can only play some older women roles. In those days of waiting, I felt really thankful for the love, care and support that I got from the people around me. And now I get everything all at once. So it’s worth the wait.”
That’s the real difficulty actresses need to face. What happened dramatically is that women have started to take control of their own life. They’re not going to wait for someone else to create roles for them. Maybe in the future, more actresses will be recognized for their talent and hard work.

Chongqing International Logistics Hub Park (物流园区) was set up in September, 2007. It is the starting point for the China-Europe Railway Express. The area is 22 square kilometers.
This park is very important for Chongqing’s plan to grow with a nearby city, open up western China to the sea, and become a place that welcomes trade from far away. It’s like a key door for China to connect with the world. Trains go west to Europe and south to the ocean through new roads, plus two more ways. There are 62 train lines going to over 100 countries and more than 500 harbors. A special road called the New Road to the Sea from the West goes through the park. It was named in 2019. It joins the old Silk Road roads in the north and reaches out to the new Ocean Silk Road in the south. It also works together with another big river area’s plan. The government is trying to make this road grow faster and stronger.
Chongqing is a city with a mix of big city life, countryside, mountains, and so on. The Minzhucun Neighborhood is in Xiejiawan. It was built from the 1950s to the 1990s. As a housing area for the workers of a big factory, it was really crowded and old.
At the start of 2022, the Minzhucun Neighborhood started to renovate (更新). It was designed together with nearby neighborhoods. To make the environment better, builders kept some old buildings, improved many of them, and removed the dangerous ones,
In the Minzhucun Neighborhood, the culture and building styles are kept, and the old city’s shape and feel go on. Long bluestone steps, red brick houses, and big Camphor trees are now part of its new city memories. Walking through the neighborhood, one can feel the beauty of old and new things together, inspiring hope for a bright future.
Chongqing’s Digital City Management Center is in Jiangbei. This is a big center in Chongqing city that helps control and run the city. It’s like a brain for the city. It collects information about things like water, electricity, gas, roads, bridges, and tunnels. This helps the city work better and smarter.
The city, districts (地区), and neighborhoods work together very well. This helps the city work faster and better. For example, if a car is not following the rules, they can send the short message to the owner in seconds. They can solve 90% of these problems now, which was only 20% before.

While music makes Jay Chou worldwide popular, he becomes much more than a musician. After trying his hand at acting and making movies, Chou turns his focus on the art world. The pop star shows his art collection in his music videos. Chou’s love for art doesn’t come out of the blue (突如其来). According to the pop star, his first contact (接触) with art goes back to a very early time when he was born. Chou’s mother worked as an art teacher,so his childhood was around art. With the growth of age, . Up till now, he has not only showed people lots of music creations, but also organized many art exhibitions. The latest one, “Art Encounters (邂逅) With Jay” was open in Xuhui, Shanghai in October, 2023.
Art often makes Chou think deeply, and that’s why the pop singer is so interested in it. One great lesson he learns through art is to keep an open mind. For example, the way of dealing with a scene (场景) is different from an artist to another. And different people often understand a piece of art differently. The true value of an artwork (艺术作品) is not in its price, it’s in the viewer’s feelings and experiences.

The next time you look at a painting, a poem or a song, pay attention to how it makes you feel. Then ask your friends about their feelings and ideas. During the Spring Festival, Chinese people should have a wonderful time celebrating the big day. But on February 12, a news event in Monument to the people’s Liberation (解放碑) of Chongqing surprised the whole country. A man from Kunming, Yunnan, drove a cool SUV called Tank 300 on the busy Zhonghua Road in reverse (逆行). After he hit several cars, he not only did not work with policemen, but also tried to run away and fight back to the police officers as well as local people, which not only seriously broke public order, but also had a very bad influence on the image (形象) of Yunnan people.
After receiving the alarm, the police quickly rushed to the scene, and in the face of this sudden situation, the police began to deal with it at once. In the video, we could see police officers holding electric batons (警棍) hitting the car windscreen and continuing to tell warnings to the man. However, this method didn’t work. Instead, the man drove his SUV running through the crowd, seeming to be completely crazy about his behavior.
Faced with this dangerous situation, nearby local Chongqing people also joined in stopping the man’s actions bravely. Some of them pushed trash cans trying to stop the big car, while others threw parking signs in order to warn him.
During the fighting, we may wonder why he had such a mad behavior? One reason is that he got much money from the government and became rich overnight. Another one is that he didn’t get a good education.
Finally, after 30 minutes’ fight, the man was successfully caught by the police and the public. He has been criminally put into the police station and the case is under further discussion.
