But you don’t even know these people.” “It doesn’t matter,” she said. “What matters is that I . ” I was sixteen years old and couldn’t understand why my mother was willing to spend her evenings talking to . She had friends and my two older sisters to call if she felt lonely. “They will talk your ear off. Some people didn’t even stop to catch their ,” I said.
My attitude (态度) didn’t stop my mother’s love for the project. That evening, I listened as she asked the woman on the other line about her day and what she had eaten for dinner. When she finished the call, I said, “ do you care whether she had cookies or rice pudding for dessert (甜点)?” My mother said, “I’m the person she talked to today. ”
It took me more than thirty years to understand the meaning of my mother’s words. Now, as my mother is nearing eighty, I find myself thinking about those nightly she used to make. I am often the only person who telephones my mother, and sometimes I’m the only person she speaks to all day. I ask her what she cooked for dinner, but mostly I just listen as she describes a walk she took, or how her dog Lucky stole foods from the refrigerator. I that my mother’s calls were life lines, which made sure housebound seniors to keep in touch with the world. Without her, their world would have been empty.

Our Christmas Goose (鹅)
a cold morning that December, my brother Rick and I were sent to Uncle Tommie’s on the other side of Little Mountain a goose for Christmas dinner. This long journey over the mountain was hard but worth it.
That morning, dark clouds were coming together overhead. I knew it was going to snow on the .

Writing by hand can give the brain bigger help than typing (打字), according to a new study. The research was done by a team at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. People were shown a word on a computer and asked to either write it on a touch screen or type it on a keyboard.
The people wore machines on their heads fitted with 256 electrodes (电极) to record their brains’ electrical activity. When they were writing, many areas of their brains were active, including the parts that help us visualize what things look like. This is because writing a word by hand requires people to picture letters and use fine sports skills to shape it. When people were typing, however, there was little activity in the same parts of the brain.
“When you are typing, the simple movement of your fingers to produce every letter is the same,” said the scientist in the study. “While you’re writing by hand, your bodily feeling of producing A is different from producing B.”
The results suggest that writing can help children learn, especially when it comes to recognizing (认识) letters. More research is needed to know whether writing by hand helps kids remember things more than typing does.
235.How did the writer lead into the topic?
A.By telling a story. B.By showing a study.
C.By giving an example. D.By asking a question.

According to a study published in February in the magazine Science of the Total Environment, hermit crabs (寄居蟹) are using plastic litter as shells (壳).
Zuzanna Jagiello is the study’s lead. “A hermit crab in a plastic shell could be a symbol of our times, a period in which human activities have had a main effect on the environment.” Jagiello told TIME for Kids. “They don’t have homes, so they use rubbish.”
Hermit crabs using plastic waste as shells is one example of that effect. To protect themselves from hunters, the crabs usually wear seashells. But according to February’s study, at least 386 hermit crabs have been seen wearing plastic. Of the world’s 16 kinds of hermit crabs that live on land, 10 have been seen wearing litter.
Jagiello says that she and her team first learned about hermit crabs wearing litter when they noticed photos of them online. They decided to learn more by doing research. They found photos from all over the world. Scientists are sad to find that plastic pollution harms wildlife and living places in such a terrible way. But they aren’t sure why hermit crabs are choosing plastic instead of other materials, nor are they sure how many crabs are in any danger.
239.What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 2 refer to (指的是)?
A.Human activities. B.Hermit crabs. C.Our times. D.Kids’ homes.
240.What is paragraph 3 mainly talking about?
A.The situation of Hermit crabs. B.The example of littering.
C.The reason for doing research. D.The kinds of plastic waste.
241.How do the scientists feel about the findings of the research?
A.Funny. B.Worried. C.Strange. D.Hopeful.
242.We can probably put the sentence “Many photos were taken by people who were curious.” back to the ______ paragraph.
A.first B.second C.third D.fourth
Wukong, Tiangong, Tianwen…Do you know where the names of Chinese space programs come from?
Wukong, the Dark Matter Explorer satellite (暗物质探测卫星), is named after the Chinese superhero, the Monkey King or Sun Wukong. According to Journey to the West, the Monkey King has a pair of sharp eyes, which can easily tell differences between the good and the bad. The Wukong satellite is just as sharp-eyed as the Monkey King to help scientists search for the dark matter in space.
The name of the space station Tiangong means “Heaven Palace” in Chinese myths (神话), this is the home of Tian Di. Now Tiangong Space Station is home for Chinese astronauts in space. And China welcomes foreign astronauts to Tiangong so that they can work together.
Tianwen, Chinese Mars missions (任务), gets its name from the poem Tianwen by Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan is a well-known poet in ancient China. In Tianwen, he had the questions about the sky, stars, nature, myths and the real world, showing his hunger for the truth of the universe (宇宙). Perhaps the Tianwen missions will end up answering some of Qu Yuan’s questions.
If you look into more names of Chinese space programs, you will find that they all have beautiful meanings. We, almost all the Chinese people, have good hopes and expectations for our space dream. So, the naming of Chinese space programs is taken very seriously.

A.By listing a number. B.By giving an example.
C.By asking a question. D.By answering a question.

A.Answering some of Qu Yuan’s questions.
B.Finding the differences between the good and the bad.
C.Helping scientists search for dark matter in space.

245.Why do we take the naming of Chinese space programs seriously?
A.Because we want to land on Mars. B.Because we want to protect the earth.
C.Because we have the hunger for truth. D.Because we have a hopeful dream for space.
246.Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.What Beautiful Names B.What a hopeful Star
C.What Excellent Poems D.What a Long Journey
Carrots are very easy to grow from seeds (种子) in your garden, a planter box, or even in a large pot. Here are some tips for planting carrots. Before planting
Step 1: Learn some knowledge about how to plant carrots.
As a general rule, carrots are planted in early spring as soon as the soil is workable or 3-5 weeks before the last frost (霜) date. Carrots will do well in a spot that’s sunny six to eight hours a day. The average (平均的) days to harvest are about 50 to 75 days from seeds. During the process of planting seeds
Step 2: Loosen (松) the soil at least one foot deep to make sure it is light and loose and can make the water go well.
Step 3: Create shallow furrows (浅沟) in the soil, 1/4 inch deep and one foot apart if you are planting more than one row of carrots.
Step4: Put the tiny carrot seeds two to three inches apart, 1/4 inch deep, and cover lightly with soil.
Step 5: Press down lightly on the soil to ensure good contact between seeds and the soil. After planting
Step6: Give them one inch of water per week.
Step 7: Thin the carrots. When the top s of the carrots reach two inches high, thin the carrots to one inch apart by pulling the small carrot plants out of the ground.
Step8: Harvest your carrots. The bigger and longer they grow, the sweeter and juicier they become. However, you can harvest them as soon as they grow big enough to eat.

Whenever I tell people that I teach English at the Berlin (柏林) Zoo, I almost always get a questioning look because of my job. Behind it, the person is trying to find out who exactly I teach...the animals?
Since June 2017, right before the arrival of the two new giant pandas, Meng Meng and Jiao Qing, I have been helping the panda keepers at the zoo to feel more comfortable and confident speaking English. And why do they need English? Who do they speak English with?
Not the pandas, even though the language that is used for the medical training instructions is actually English. They talk to the crowd of international visitors and to visiting Chinese zookeepers who often come to check on the pandas, which are on loan (租借) from China. As you know, English is widely spoken in the world while German isn’t. They also need to be ready to give interviews in English with international reporters. This is why they need an English trainer.
So what are they learning? Basically, how to describe a panda’s life. And here’s what I’ve learned from them so far:
Note 1: Pandas eat bamboo, lots of bamboo! They can eat up to 30 kilograms a day, and when they’re not eating, they’re sleeping.
Note 2: The two of them live in separate enclosures at the zoo because that is how they live in nature.
Note 3: Giant pandas come from the cool, foggy mountains of south-western China.
Note 4: They are endangered, with fewer than 2, 000 of them living in the wild today.
It’s been an honor to watch the panda program develop and to see the pandas get used to their new home. As a little girl, I wanted to be a zookeeper when I grew up. Now, I’m living out that dream indirectly by helping the panda keepers do their job in English.

As we know, eating vegetables is good for us. Why do some people like them but others don’t? A new study has found that other people’s likes and dislikes could be a reason. According to the research, people who eat vegetables and show a clear dislike for them can influence others.
People may make facial expressions (面部表情) when eating. How does it affect a person watching them? A team of scientists in the UK did a study. They asked more than 200 young women to watch videos of other adults eating broccoli (西兰花). The people in the videos had different expressions while eating. They would smile, seem neutral (neither happy nor sad), or look disgusted.
The study found that when people in the videos look disgusted while eating broccoli, people watching them began to like broccoli less. The opposite was not true, however. When someone had a smile while eating broccoli, people watching them did not like broccoli more.
By watching others, humans learn which behaviors will be good for them. Scientists believe that people might avoid food that looks terrible. In this way, people can protect themselves from eating something bad or dangerous.
The research focused only on adults, but the team believe that the results could also work for children. This means, if children see their parents not enjoying certain foods, including vegetables, they might not want to eat them either.

Warming temperatures and shorter winters might sound like the end of snow days. However, rising temperatures may actually cause snowstorms to dump more snow, says David Robinson. He is a professor at a university in New Jersey. He studies climate (气候) change.
Temperature change is one of the greatest in Earth’s climate change over a long period of time. It can happen naturally or because of human activities, such as burning gas and coal. Burning these fuels produces carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and other pollutants into the atmosphere, which hold heat in the atmosphere, leading to warmer global temperatures over time.
But how could warmer temperatures lead to more snow? To get snow, you need moisture (水汽) and freezing temperatures (0°C or less), says Robinson. Without moisture in the air, there is no precipitation (rain or snow). Robinson says there are signs that snowstorms are becoming stronger. This is because of this connection between moisture and precipitation.
“The warmer the air becomes, the more moisture it holds. So, if it’s warming and still cold enough to snow, you can get more snow.” Robinson says.
Of the 10 biggest snowfalls in D. C. region, five happened in the past 25 years, according to the NWS. During that same time period, average winter temperatures in D. C. increased. In 1996, the average winter temperature was 1.8°C. In 2020, it was 6°C.
Weather experts suggest that rising temperatures may make winter shorter and less cold. But for now, the snow is still falling. One day, winter might not have any days below the freezing temperature. Once temperatures stay above freezing, snowstorms become rain. Until then, we might continue to see strong storms.
According to Robinson, that time could come sooner than we think. He says, “When we look back, years from now, we may see that this was the breaking point.”

When you are supposed to be listening to your teacher, you might be looking out of the window, making plans for after school, or thinking about nothing at all! If so, you’re experiencing mind wandering.
Thinking about anything other than the task you should be focusing on is called mind wandering. It can happen on purpose or by accident. Some studies find that people may spend nearly half their day mind wandering.
The effects of mind wandering can vary a lot. Sometimes there are no effects at all. Think about drinking a glass of water: this task is simple and happens often, allowing you to drink without much effort or spilling (溢出), even if your mind is wandering. This kind of behavior is automatic. Other times, mind wandering has minor effects. If you briefly (短暂的) lose focus on your teacher’s voice, you may not hear what was said, but by rapidly focusing on the teacher’s voice again, you can get back easily. Finally, there are examples when mind wandering can have very serious results. Imagine crossing the street or riding a bike without focusing on your surroundings.
Much evidence suggests that mind wandering is not a rare mistake, but actually a very normal part of the way the mind works!
So why do we mind wander? The likely reason is that mind wandering serves useful purposes. Mind wandering can help in problem solving, creative thinking, and planning for the future. Even when you are not trying to think about anything, your mind is still working in the background. Without trying, your mind might start focusing on memories that could help solve a problem in the present. This can be when creative or unusual ideas are made!
Also, mind wandering can help with learning and memory. Mind wandering helps strengthen recent memories. This benefit is strongest when the memories are about yourself.
Finally, mind wandering offers a time to “rest” and prepare for upcoming thinking. It prevents new information from entering the mind and using up limited attention to deal with the new information. When our minds wander, creative ideas can be built and used to plan or solve problems. When our minds wander, our attention can also focus on useful information, like thinking about plans for later in the day.
The mind actually does a lot when it wanders! So, do not see mind wandering as a mistake. There are many wonderful things in the world that you can notice when you let your mind wander. So, let yourself gaze out the window or stare at clouds, or even close your eyes and simply “be”.
263.You will most probably experience mind wandering when you ____________.

A giant panda from the Beijing Zoo has been saved by a transfusion(输血)of blood from two black bears. But it’s still under special care, according to the Beijing Zoo.
Yong Liang, two years old, is the first giant panda raised from birth in the zoo. Last month zoo keepers found the panda was suffering from serious anemia(贫血), calling for urgent(紧急的)blood transfusion.
The best way, according to zoo’s experts(专家), to save Yong Liang from anemia would have been to transfuse blood from another panda. But it was the breeding(繁殖) season for giant pandas, making such a transfusion very difficult.
But the experts found that there is a close consanguinity(血缘)between giant pandas and black bears, so they decided to try to take blood from black bears in the zoo and transfuse it to Yong Liang.
With the help of hospitals and Beijing Blood Donor Station(献血站), they make an experiment which proved that the red blood cells(细胞)in the blood of black bears can be used.
On the afternoon of February15th the first red blood cell transfusion was given to the giant panda, from 600ml of black bear blood. Immediately the young panda started to get well again.

In many places, the ground will be covered with snow in winter. Some people will lock themselves in to get away from the cold. Some, however, would like to spend the season building snowmen and snow mazes (迷宫).
Clint Masse, a Canadian man, is one of them. Last winter he and his team worked six and a half days a week. After three weeks of work, they did it. They broke the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest snow maze.
Masse lives in Manitoba. It is in northern Canada. The man has built snow mazes for more than 20 years. However, he had never completed such a large one. The maze covered an area of 2,790 square meters. It had walls that were 2 meters tall and 0.6 meters thick. It took about 30 minutes to walk through the maze, depending on your luck.
The maze cost Masse 57,000 Canadian dollars. The man and his team used a snow machine to make enough snow for the project. Man-made snow is stronger than natural snow. “If you drive through the snow walls, you will break your car before you break the walls,” Masse said.

Question 1: How did you become a National Geographic photographer?
My first job was for a newspaper. After a few years there, I met a National Geographic photographer. He liked my photos and said I should send some to the magazine. So I did. That led to a one-day job. And that led to a nine-day job, and so on.
Question 2: _______
To get into National Geographic, you have to give them something they don’t have. It’s not enough just to be a great photographer. You also have to be a scientist, for example, or be able to dive under sea ice, or spend maybe several days in a tree.
Question 3: Is it hard to get a job as a photographer today?
It’s now harder to work for magazines. Technology makes it easy to take good pictures, which means there are more photos and photographers. What the magazines need to do these days is to pay for these photos.
Question 4: I want to be a photographer. Do you have any advice for me?
Advice? Well, work hard. Be passionate (热情的) about every project you work on. Take lots of pictures in different situations. Look at others’ photos thoughtfully and learn from them. And be curious about everything. There’s something to photograph everywhere.
303.Which of the following can be Question 2?

D.Jason, a photographer who keeps developing skills and idea.
Homework exams and most importantly, test scores--- the things you have to worry about seem endless. You are sure not alone. In China, many students are stressed out because of too much homework. But there might be good news for some of them.
On Oct 28th, the Education Department of Zhejiang Province polished a draft(提纲) on cutting students’ homework to ask about public opinions and it had became a hot topic. It gives primary school pupils the right to leave their homework unfinished after 9pm, and junior high school students after 10pm, with parents’ permission.
Children in Zhejiang will like the draft. However, it has mat strong objections(反对) from parents. Although parents don’t want their children under too much pressure with homework, many disagree to cut homework down.
There is a reason for the objections:gaokao, the “all-important” national entrance exam. If schools reduce homework, “the parents, who want their children to get higher scores, must provide them with more after-school trainings,” said a primary school teacher in Hangzhou.
The aim of this draft, an official in Zhejiang explained, is to help to treat students differently and make sure they get enough sleep.
Chu Zhaohui, a researcher at the National Institute of Education Sciences, also doubted if the guidelines would be carried on. “They are not suitable in the recent social environment.” He said to People’s Daily.
“Even if schools make changes, it is difficult to change the way that students study for scores.” He suggests that it would make better sense to make the system of college admission more flexible, and in many other countries, the performance of students is judged by professional institution rather than government.
307.What does underlined “many” in para.3 refer to?
A.Children who will welcome the move.
B.Parents who are against the move.
C.Teachers who don’t want their students to be under some stress.
D.The officials who are worried about the move.
308.What is NOT true according to the passage?
A.The draft is not welcomed by many parents in Zhejiang.
B.Maybe parents will send their children to more after-school training.
C.The aim of the draft is to make sure students can have enough time to exercise.
D.Students should be treated differently.
309.What does Chu Zhaohui mainly want to tell us?
A.Students will have more chance to take part in the activities they like because of the draft.
B.The system of college admission should be changed as the school has made changes.
C.Students should spend more time doing homework if we change the system of college admissions.
D.The performance of students should be judged by their school.
310.What is the best title of this passage?
A.Can students have the right to do whatever they like?
B.Can parents pay less attention to their kids?
C.Can schools have the chance to choose students?
D.Can students spend less time doing homework?
