B As a young person, I never thought of myself as a sports enthusiast because I was quite clumsy. But there was one thing I enjoyed: running. It felt like I was soaring (翱翔) through the air. Sadly, this changed when I hurt my knee two years ago. I had to stay in be d for two weeks and even walking a short way was hard for me. I was so upset that I cried as I moved to the car for several days. When therapy (治疗,疗法) wasn’t working well for me, I signed up for a hot yoga class for girls, Bikram Yoga to be exact. Starting a yoga practice was truly a blessing because it helped me gain strength in my knees but, most importantly yoga helped me attain a more peaceful state of mind, body and spirit. Since each class was heated to 105°F, every time I stepped foot in the yoga studio, I’d feel a surge (涌起) of negative thoughts come upon me like a big ocean wave. Some of these thoughts were, in the beginning of my practice, so strong that I walked out of the class several times. However, as the months passed by, I noticed that when I didn’t get swayed away (动摇) by my negative thoughts, I could stay in the hot room for longer. After 3-4months of practising hot yoga, my arms and legs were beginning to get definition. I also woke up with so much more energy than I had before starting my yoga practice and I gradually started shedding the pounds (减轻体重) from my body. Yoga literally made me feel as if I’d taken a shot of energy drink and just gave me that burst that helped my knees heal and made my overall health better. As I saw some of my classmates do poses that looked appealing to me, I started to think maybe I could do them too. Therefore, yoga helped show me that I have no real limitations physically unless I set those limitations myself through eating junk and thinking in negative limiting terms. Also, practising yoga in front of a mirror helped me connect with myself and practising with a group of people really helped me to feel a greater sense of connection with humanity whereas before I didn’t. Overall, this yoga practice has helped me to see I’m part of a bigger picture in life! 41. What once depressed the author terribly according to Paragraph 1? A. Her inability to walk. B. Her negative thoughts. C. Her failure to find her car. D. Her serious physical disease. 42. What was the effect of yoga classes on the author’s mind? A. She got emotionally smarter. B. She felt limited but hopeful. C. She became mentally stronger. D. She accepted herself as she was. 43. What difficulty did the author meet while attending each yoga class? A. The temperature was difficult to control in yoga class. B. She couldn’t bear the pain the knee injury brought. C. Lack of confidence prevented the author doing yoga. D. She was greatly influenced by negative thoughts. 44. What can we learn about the author from paragraph 4? A. Her physical state has acquired a new outlook. B. Her social circle was widened in the yoga classes. C. She has developed many healthy eating habits. D. She did better than her classmates at school. 45. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage? A. To call on readers to sign up for yoga courses. B. To present the benefits of practising yoga regularly. C. To show readers the necessary skills needed to do yoga. D. To share with readers her experience in taking yoga classes. C Science fiction writers create imaginary worlds. The way things work in your imaginary worlds will be based on actual science. So it’s important for you to be familiar with the scientific principles and inventions that are related to your creation. For example if you’re writing about humans living on a planet with zero gravity, then you need to know the effects of zero gravity on the human body. Then you have to figure out the exact rules of your imaginary worlds. And you have to follow them. If humans have evolved (进化) to breathe underwater in Chapter 1, your character can’t drown in a swimming pool in Chapter 3. If your robots write poetry but not fiction, then you can’t throw a novelist robot into Chapter 8. The issue here is maintaining your readers’ trust. That means the reader is willing to pretend along with you. If you start out with an ordinary detective novel (侦探小说) and then throw in someone breathing underwater in the 6th chapter, your readers’ reaction might be, “What the h……?” The imaginative spell is broken. You’ve pulled the readers out of their imagination. The same thing happens if you change the rules halfway. Part of your preparation work for the novel is to map out its worlds for yourself in great detail. Decide: the history of the world, the geography, what possibilities it offers, how everything works in this new reality, and how all of these factors affect the way your characters think, feel, and react to things. You don’t have to tell your readers all the rules in the first chapter. But you have to let your readers know enough to understand what’s going on. This also allows you to work out logical problems and contradictions (矛盾) before you start writing. When you are writing, remember to make it feel real. You are inviting readers to visit a new world. They will want to be able to see, hear, feel, smell, and even taste what it’s like. Whether your novel is about a world without disease or an undiscovered planet, help your readers feel like they’re actually there. 46. What’s the relationship between actual science and science fiction? A. Science fiction promotes the development of actual science. B. Science fiction often reflects the development of actual science. C. Actual science limits the imagination described in science fiction. D. Actual science provides basic principles for science fiction. 47. The second paragraph is mainly developed by ________. A. making comparisons B. giving examples C. following the time order D. analyzing causes 48. Which of the following statements is TRUE? A. It is necessary to do some scientific experiments before writing science fiction. B. It is more difficult to write science fiction than ordinary detective novels. C. Readers of science fiction actually pretend the writers’ rules are true. D. It is great to leave some contradictions in your science fiction. 49. The target (目标) readers of the passage are ________. A. young scientists B. science fiction writers C. college students D. professional journalists 50. The passage is mainly about ________. A. how to do scientific research B. how to raise interest in science C. what to expect from science fiction D. how to write science fiction D As the saying goes, “All roads lead to Rome” — but was that really the case? The answer is not as easy as an unqualified “yes” or “no”. It’s a little more complicated than that. In 2015, three researchers at the Moovel Lab dropped a uniform grid (网格) of almost 500,000 points across a map of Europe. These points were simply random spots from which to start a journey to Rome. The team then developed a method to calculate the best route to Rome using modern routes from each of those starting points. The more frequently a road was used across the different points, the thicker it was drawn on the map. Their results showed many roads led to Rome, connecting other major cities along the way, such as London, Constantinople (present-day Istanbul) and Paris, which were also part of the ancient empire. News of the map spread quickly, but it didn’t actually prove that all roads lead to Rome. If the researchers had conducted the same exercise and looked at the quickest way from those same 500,000 points to Berlin or Moscow, the map would also show similar results. The team used computer modeling to look at most logical routes that connect two points on the landscape, and then compared that with their knowledge of Roman roads to see if they’re similar. Modern routes are often the same in most cases. In other words, many of Europe’s multi-lane highways are the successors (继承者) of Roman roads. In ancient times, roads were mainly built to ensure people could travel around within a short time. This has changed in recent years, however; newly built motorways avoid populated places to save money in acquiring land. The main roads in ancient Rome were straight lines whenever geography allowed. These major roads were built with different layers like earth and rock, and finally big pieces of stone on the top. They weren’t flat, but had a round roof to allow proper drainage (排水). Then came other secondary dirt roads that weren’t paved. They connected smaller towns and cities, rather than offering any sort of a route to Rome. So, was the saying in Paragraph 1 right? No, but an awful lot of important ones eventually made their way there. 51. What is the purpose of quoting the saying? A. To draw a conclusion. B. To present an argument. C. To introduce the topic of the text. D. To give an answer to the question. 52. What did the team do with the new method mentioned in Paragraph 2? A. They found the best web of roads leading to Rome. B. They counted all the existing roads in Rome. C They showed the layout of cities in Europe. D. They drew the map of ancient Rome. 53. What might be a significance of building Roman roads? A. It connected urban areas and rural areas. B. It changed the history of European roads. C. It contributed to traffic rules of two runways. D. It set a good example to European road styles. 54. What did people attach importance to while building roads in ancient times? A. Whether the roads were wide enough. B. Whether the roads helped collect rainwater. C. Whether the roads helped people save time. D. Whether the roads were close to people’s residences 55. Which can be the best title for the text? A. How were roads built in ancient Europe? B. Was ancient Rome an empire in Europe? C. Why does Rome have so many roads? D. Do all roads lead to Rome? My son and I had been looking for a Boston Terrier (波士频犬) for months before we found one last year. He was very thin, and looked and smelled near death. I thought the man who had him should be punished for treating an animal in such a cruel way until we were told about the story of Lucky, a black-and-white Boston Terrier with a funny face and big sad eyes. Lucky had been owned by a man called Fred, who had a mental disorder and took medicine every day. This medicine made him sleep quite deeply, so Fred only took it at bedtime. Lucky slept by his side. One night, Fred took his medicine, went to bed and fell sound asleep. The house wiring shorted and set the house on fire. Being under the medicine’s power, Fred just kept sleeping. Lucky barked and barked, but Fred couldn’t hear him. When Lucky realized Fred wasn’t waking up, he jumped into the middle of his chest and started licking his face. Fred finally woke up and realized the house was on fire. He crawled out of the bedroom window. It took Fred a minute to realize he had left his dog behind. He reached through the window and grabbed Lucky, pulling him to safety. After the fire, Fred had to move into an apartment, where he couldn’t keep animals. So he had to give Lucky to a friend of his, asking him to find a good home for Lucky. My son and I saw an ad in the paper putting Lucky up for adoption and we eventually adopted Lucky. Lucky inhaled so much smoke that night that his bark will never be normal again. He sounds like he has a throat full of pea gravel (豆砾石) but he has the spirit of a lion. 故选A项。 根据第二段中的“When therapy (治疗,疗法) wasn’t working well for me, I signed up for a hot yoga class for girls, Bikram Yoga to be exact. 以及最后一段中的“Overall, this yoga practice has helped me to see I’m part of a bigger picture in life! C Science fiction writers create imaginary worlds. The way things work in your imaginary worlds will be based on actual science. So it’s important for you to be familiar with the scientific principles and inventions that are related to your creation. For example, if you’re writing about humans living on a planet with zero gravity, then you need to know the effects of zero gravity on the human body. D Actual science provides basic principles for science fiction. A. how to do scientific research B. how to raise interest in science C. what to expect from science fiction D. how to write science fiction 【答案】46. D 47. B 48. C 49. B 50. The way things work in your imaginary worlds will be based on actual science.”(科幻作家创造了虚构的世界。 由第二段中的“If humans have evolved (进化) to breathe underwater in Chapter 1, your character can’t drown in a swimming pool in Chapter 3. If your robots write poetry but not fiction, then you can’t throw a novelist robot into Chapter 8.”(如果在第1章中人类已经进化到在水下呼吸,那么在第3章中你的角色不会在游泳池里淹死。 和“If you start out with an ordinary detective novel (侦探小说) and then throw in someone breathing underwater in the 6th chapter, your readers’ reaction might be, “What the h……?””(如果你从一本普通的侦探小说开始,然后在第六章中加入一个在水下呼吸的人,你的读者的反应可能是,“什么h……?)及“The same thing happens if you change the rules halfway.”(如果你半途而废也会发生同样的事情。) 由第二段中的“That means the reader is willing to pretend along with you.”(这意味着读者愿意和你一起假装。)和最后一段“When you are writing, remember to make it feel real. You are inviting readers to visit a new world. They will want to be able to see, hear, feel, smell, and even taste what it’s like. Whether your novel is about a world without disease or an undiscovered planet, help your readers feel like they’re actually there.”(当你写作的时候,记得让它感觉真实。 The way things work in your imaginary worlds will be based on actual science. So it’s important for you to be familiar with the scientific principles and inventions that are related to your creation.”(科幻作家创造了虚构的世界。 ,第二段中的“That means the reader is willing to pretend along with you.”(这意味着读者愿意和你一起假装。)和最后一段“When you are writing, remember to make it feel real. You are inviting readers to visit a new world.”(当你写作的时候,记得让它感觉真实。 D As the saying goes, “All roads lead to Rome” — but was that really the case? C. They showed the layout of cities in Europe. C 52. A 53. D 54. C 55. 根据首段“As the saying goes, “All roads lead to Rome” — but was that really the case? The answer is not as easy as an unqualified “yes” or “no”. It’s a little more complicated than that.(俗话说,“条条大路通罗马”——但事实真的是这样吗?答案并不像不加限定的“是”或“否”那么简单。实际情况比这更复杂。)”可知,首段中对“条条大路通罗马”提出质疑,并给出的答案是实际情况并非是简单到用“是”或“否”来回答,进而在下文中介绍了人们为解决该疑问而做的研究;由此可知,首段引用俗语的目的是引出本文的话题。故选C项。 【52题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The team then developed a method to calculate the best route to Rome using modern routes from each of those starting points.(然后,该团队开发了一种方法,利用每个起点的现代路线计算到罗马的最佳路线。)” 故选A项。 根据第四段中的“In other words, many of Europe’s multi-lane highways are the successors (继承者) of Roman roads.(换句话说,欧洲的许多多车道高速公路都是罗马道路的继承者。)” 根据第五段中的“In ancient times, roads were mainly built to ensure people could travel around within a short time.(在古代,修建道路主要是为了保证人们能在短时间内出行。)” 根据首段“As the saying goes, “All roads lead to Rome” — but was that really the case? The answer is not as easy as an unqualified “yes” or “no”. It’s a little more complicated than that.(俗话说,“条条大路通罗马”——但事实真的是这样吗?答案并不像不加限定的“是”或“否”那么简单。实际情况比这更复杂。)”可知,本文引用“条条大路通罗马”这一谚语引出讨论的话题,进而在下文中分析了事实是否真的是“条条大路通罗马”,结合尾段“So, was the saying in Paragraph 1 right? No, but an awful lot of important ones eventually made their way there.(那么,第一段的说法对吗? I’m proud to have him around, and I’m looking forward to many more years with this brave and worthy companion. 56. What did Lucky look like when the author found him? (no more than 8 words) ____________________________________________________________________________________ 57. What made Fred fail to wake up when the house was on fire? (no more than10 words) ____________________________________________________________________________________ 58 Why couldn’t Fred keep Lucky after the fire? (no more than 15 words) ____________________________________________________________________________________ 59. What is the meaning of the underlined word in the last paragraph? (no more than 5 words) ____________________________________________________________________________________ 60. If you meet a dog like Lucky, would you adopt him? Why or why not? (no more than 25 words) ____________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】56. He was very thin and weak/ He was close to dying. 57. The side effect of medicine that he had taken. 58. Because animals weren’t allowed to enter the new apartment he moved in. 59. Breathed in./ Sucked in. 60. Open./ Yes, I would. Because he was brave to save his former owner’s life and he ought to be taken good care of./ Yes, for his bravery and resilience despite his past hardships. 根据第一段的“He was very thin, and looked and smelled near death.(他很瘦,看起来和闻起来都快死了)”,当作者找到Lucky时,他看起来很瘦,和虚弱,看起来快要死了。 He was very thin and weak/ He was close to dying. 根据第二段的“Lucky had been owned by a man called Fred, who had a mental disorder and took medicine every day. This medicine made him sleep quite deeply, so Fred only took it at bedtime. (Lucky的主人是一个叫Fred的人,他患有精神障碍,每天都在吃药。这种药使他睡得很沉,所以弗雷德只在睡觉时服用)”以及第三段中“One night, Fred took his medicine, went to bed and fell sound asleep. The house wiring shorted and set the house on fire. Being under the medicine’s power, Fred just kept sleeping.(一天晚上,弗雷德吃了药,躺在床上睡着了。房子的电线短路了,房子着火了。在药物的作用下,弗雷德一直在睡觉。)”可知,Fred每天吃的药有副作用,让他睡的很沉,所以在大火中没有醒过来。故答案为:The side effect of medicine that he had taken. 根据第四段中“After the fire, Fred had to move into an apartment, where he couldn’t keep animals.(火灾发生后,弗雷德不得不搬进一间公寓,在那里他不能饲养动物)”可知,Fred新搬进的公寓不能养动物,也就是这所公寓不允许动物进入。 Because animals weren’t allowed to enter the new apartment he moved in. 根据最后一段的“He sounds like he has a throat full of pea gravel (豆砾石) but he has the spirit of a lion.(他听起来喉咙里塞满了豌豆砾石,但他有狮子的精神)”可知,Lucky的声音听起来就像喉咙里塞满了豌豆砾石,所以他在大火当中吸入了很多的烟,以至于伤了喉咙。 故答案为:Breathed in./ Sucked in. 为什么?”,可回答为“Yes, I would. Because he was brave to save his former owner’s life and he ought to be taken good care of.”,意为“是的,我会收养他。因为他勇敢地救了前主人的命,应该好好照顾他”,也可以回答为“Yes, for his bravery and resilience despite his past hardships.”,意为“是的,会收养,因为要感谢他在过去的磨难中表现出的勇敢和坚韧。”。故答案为Open./ Yes, I would. Because he was brave to save his former owner’s life and he ought to be taken good care of./ Yes, for his bravery and resilience despite his past hardships. 参考词汇:弘扬科学家精神 promote the spirit of scientists ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Good morning, dear friends!
