An octopus has so many arms eight in fact! You may ask how they can control their arms without catching themselves. Don't worry, octopuses take it as a piece of cake with the help of a chemical (化学物质) on their skin.
Scientists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Palestine, found that an octopus' arms have nervous(神经的)systems that can control movement without contacting the octopus’brain. That's why their arms can live on to catch food for about an hour after being cut off from the body.
Scientists watched an octopus and one of its cut-off arms in a pool. There was also another cut-off arm that has been skinned in the pool. Scientists found that the cut-off arm didn't touch the live octopus. It caught the skinned arm.
Clearly, something about octopus skin was protecting the arms from one another.
To test the idea, scientists offered food with chemicals of octopus skin and fish skin. They found that the octopus' arms again didn't touch the skin. Their grasp on the food with chemicals of octopus skin was 20 times weaker than the grasp on the food with fish skin chemicals.
The chemicals used by octopus skin helped the animal self-recognize(自我认知)their arms. “Self-recognition is common in nature,” Guy Levy, the lead scientist told Live Science, “Immune cells(免粒细胞), for example, must differentiate between body cells and invaders. But the amazing thing about the octopus is that the animals use chemical recognition to control their action."
The findings could help build a robotic octopus arm in surgery, because of the arms' amazing flexibility(灵活性).
