2. When ______ help, one often says “Thank you” or “It’s kind of you”.
A. being offered B. to offer C. offered D. offering

A
Too Much of a Good Thing — the Law of Unintended Consequences
Government leaders try hard to make the best decisions. Sometimes they survey the general public, get expert advice and hold meetings. Of course, we already know the following from Aesop’s fable “The Man, the Boy, and the Donkey”: please all, and you will please none. The policy-makers are well aware of that. But sadly, there are in fact times when decisions made in good faith and with the best of intentions result in undesired outcomes.
In Australia
A large toad (蟾蜍), known as the cane toad, native to the southern United States and Brazil, was introduced into Australia to control a kind of pests (害虫) harmful to people’s crops. This introduction of a foreign species was done after careful examination. At that time, it was believed that the introduction of the toad had served its purpose. However, later studies concluded that the cane toad’s huge appetite has caused considerable damage to the native Australian ecosystem, with its number totally out of control.
In Iceland
A lovely purple flower, the Alaskan Lupin is a big concern in Iceland. The species was introduced into Iceland to prevent soil from being washed away. But it grew and spread like a weed, threatening the growth of nearby plants. Now the government is working on having students from Iceland and abroad moving in to cut down the Lupin and, if possible, remove its seeds from the ground.
In Canada
Canadian Forest Service has become “too successful” with its fire-prevention policy. Fire is a natural part of the life cycle of forests, and the reduction of forest fires created new problems. Aged trees which should have been killed off by fire are easily infected by pests and diseases and pass them to neighboring trees. They are now threatening to destroy the forests of British Columbia and Alberta.
16. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. It’s impossible to satisfy everyone.
B. It’s important to have good manners.
C. It’s challenging to collect opinions.
D. It’s necessary to predict the future.
17. What do Australia and Iceland have in common according to the text?
A. They suffered economic loss.
B. They imported a foreign species.
C. They achieved what they desired.
D. They managed to deal with the trouble.
18. What does the writer try to tell us?
A. Introduction of a foreign species is a mistake.
B. Too many good things can bring bad consequences.
C. Policy making should be taken more seriously.
D. Good intentions may not lead to desired results.
A 17. B 18. D
根据画线词所在句及其上文“Of course, we already know the following from Aesop’s fable “The Man, the Boy, and the Donkey”: please all, and you will please none. The policy-makers are well aware of that. (当然,我们已经从伊索寓言《男人、儿子和驴》中知道了下面这句话:想讨好所有人,你就会弄得人人不悦。政策制定者很清楚这一点)”可推知,政策制定者很清楚的是一则伊索寓言揭示的道理:让每个人都满意是不可能的,画线的that指的就是这一道理。故选A项。
根据In Australia中“A large toad (蟾蜍), known as the cane toad, native to the southern United States and Brazil, was introduced into Australia to control a kind of pests (害虫) harmful to people’s crops. (一种大蟾蜍,被称为甘蔗蟾蜍,原产于美国南部和巴西,被引入澳大利亚,以控制一种对人们的农作物有害的害虫)”和In Iceland中“The species was introduced into Iceland to prevent soil from being washed away. (这种物种被引入冰岛是为了防止土壤被冲走)”可知,澳大利亚和冰岛的共同之处在于它们都引进了外来物种。故选B项。
【18题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是文章的标题“Too Much of a Good Thing—the Law of Unintended Consequences (好事过犹不及——意外后果法则)”和第一段中“But sadly, there are in fact times when decisions made in good faith and with the best of intentions result in undesired outcomes. (但令人遗憾的是,事实上有时出于善意和最佳意图做出的决定会导致意想不到的结果)”可知,文章围绕“好事过犹不及”的现象展开,通过澳大利亚、冰岛和加拿大的三个事例说明了出于善意和良好意图做出的决定有时会导致意想不到的负面后果。由此可知,作者想告诉我们:良好的意图未必会带来理想的结果。故选D项。
B
I’ve been in an 18-year love-hate relationship with a black walnut tree.
It’s a unique tree. In late September or early October, falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls (头骨) of you, your children, your neighbors and those that live next door to them. Umbrellas in the yard are a must while dining in early August, and as for me, I wear my bike helm et while working in the garden.
The black walnut also releases a chemical substance through its roots as a competitive strategy. It’s poisonous to several common plants. There have been many new plant varieties that I brought home with hopes that maybe the black walnut would accept them, but they failed to grow.
What does work are native plants that naturally grow in the area. Native plants are important to have around since they provide beneficial pollinators (传粉者) like birds, bees and butterflies with seeds and contribute to a healthy and biodiverse environment. Native plants for this area are generally easy to grow, so they experience less stress.
Have I thought of getting rid of this giant pain in my tiny backyard? Yes, however, getting rid of this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible. It’s also protected under the law. Rightfully so. Trees are important to the urban forest and for all of those that inhabit it.
Sometimes I think about my life without the black walnut. I can’t imagine a spring without the birds who arrive every year and loudly sing their songs before dawn. I’d miss falling asleep on lazy weekend afternoons as I look up into its leaves.
Every spring, I wonder what the season holds: What are the chances of being knocked unconscious while barbecuing? Like any good relationship, I’ll never be pleased. I’m stuck with this tree, so I’ll listen to its needs and give it the space it requires. In return, my walnut offers a habitat for wildlife and a reminder.
19. Why does the author wear a bike helm et while working in the garden?
A. To protect the injured skull.
B. To avoid being hit by the nuts.
C. To prevent herself from sunburn.
D. To protect herself from falling over.
20. What is the tree’s survival strategy?
A. It accepts new plant varieties.
B. It attracts beneficial pollinators.
C. It lets out a poison to drive away pests.
D. It produces a chemical deadly to some plants.
21. What is the writer’s attitude towards the walnut tree?
A. Pleased. B. Conflicted. C. Curious. D. Disapproving.
22. The author most probably got a reminder from the tree that ______.
A. It's better to accept than to resist.
B. It's better to act than to think
C. It's better to compete than to give up.
D. It's better to protect than to destroy.
B 20. D 21. B 22. A
根据第二段“In late September or early October, falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls(头骨) of you, your children, your neighbors and those that live next door to them.(在9月底或10月初,像棒球一样坚硬的水果会威胁到你、你的孩子、你的邻居和他们隔壁的人的头骨。)”
根据第三段“The black walnut also releases a chemical substance through its roots as a competitive strategy. It’s poisonous to several common plants. (作为一种竞争策略,黑胡桃还通过其根部释放出一种化学物质。它对几种常见的植物有毒。)”可知,黑胡桃树的生存策略就是释放一种对其他一些常见植物物种有毒的物质,以独占生存资源。故选D项。
【21题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第五段“Have I thought of getting rid of this giant pain in my tiny backyard? Yes, however, getting rid of this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible.(我有没有想过摆脱我小小后院的巨大痛苦?是的,然而,要除掉这棵50英尺高、树干87英寸的树几乎是不可能的。)”和第六段“Sometimes I think about my life without the black walnut. I can’t imagine a spring without the birds who arrive every year and loudly sing their songs before dawn. I’d miss falling asleep on lazy weekend afternoons as I look up into its leaves.(有时我会想起没有黑胡桃的生活。我无法想象春天里没有每年黎明前都会到来并大声唱歌的鸟儿。我会怀念在周末慵懒的下午抬头看着它的叶子入睡。)”可知,作者对黑胡桃树是又恨又爱的,换句话说,这种情感是矛盾冲突的。故选B项。
【22题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第三段“Have I thought of getting rid of this giant pain in my tiny backyard? Yes, however, getting rid of this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible. (我有没有想过摆脱我小小后院的巨大痛苦?是的,然而,要除掉这棵50英尺高、树干87英寸的树几乎是不可能的。)”和最后一段“I’m stuck with this tree, so I’ll listen to its needs and give it the space it requires.(我就与这棵树相伴,所以我会倾听它的需求,给它所需的空间。)” 故选A项。
C
Hiring processes can be thought of as a battle between integrity and dishonesty. You might imagine this is a simple fight between truth-seeking firms and self-promoting applicants, and to a certain extent it is. But companies themselves tend to bend reality out of shape in ways that are self-defeating.
Start with the obvious wrongdoers: job applicants. When it comes to writing the resume (简历), they are likely to beautify reality into the most attractive shape possible. Everyone beyond a certain level of experience is a transformational leader personally responsible for generating millions of income; the world economy would be about 15 times bigger than it actually is if all such claims were true. The average British people spend four and a half hours a day watching TV and online videos. But each average job candidate is an enthusiast for public welfare, using their spare time only for worthy purposes, like volunteering in soup kitchens.
But the tendency to overturn the truth negatively impacts companies as well as applicants. The typical firm will write a job description that invariably describes the work environment as fast-paced and innovative, and then lays out a set of improbable requirements for the “ideal candidate”, someone who almost by definition does not exist. Sometimes, the requirements include an ability to go back and change the course of history.
Too few firms offer an accurate account of what a position actually involves in their job previews, which are supposed to give potential employees a real sense of the negatives and positives of the job, as well as a clear idea of the company’s corporate culture. One effective strategy is to lay out in text or video what a typical day in the role would look like.
Such honesty can be its own reward. Research has long suggested that realistic job previews lead to lower turnover and higher employee satisfaction. A paper in 2011 by David Eamest of Towson University and his co-authors concluded that favourable perceptions of the organisation's honesty are the best explanation for why. So a process designed to uncover the truth about job applicants would run a lot more smoothly if firms were also honest about themselves.
23. Why are “leader” and "enthusiast" mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To stress the importance of presenting a personal image.
B To describe the hiring process of a large company.
C. To make a comparison between different interviewers.
D. To show job applicants' attempt to appear good.
24. What problems do many firms hate?
A. They set goals for their employees.
B. They fails to provide honest job description.
C. Their working environment is stressful.
D. They are becoming less friendly to employees.
25. What are job previews expected to be like in paragraph .4?
A. They show a position as it is. B. They are made either in text or video.
C. They are favorable for bigger firms. D. They mainly contain negatives of a job.
26. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Pains and gains of employees. B. How to get the lying out of hiring.
C. How to be more appealing in hiring. D. A war between applicants and companies.
D 24. B 25. A 26. B
根据第二段第一句“When it comes to writing the resume, they are likely to beautify reality into the most attractive shape possible.(当涉及到写简历时,他们倾向于将现实美化为尽可能吸引人的样子。)”及随后举出的例子,如每个人都声称自己是“transformational leader”,以及本段中的“the world economy would be about 15 times bigger than it actually is if all such claims were true.(如果所有这些说法都是真的,那么世界经济规模将是实际规模的15倍左右。)”
根据第三段中的“The typical firm will write a job description that invariably describes the work environment as fast-paced and innovative(典型的公司会写一份工作描述,总是把工作环境描述为快节奏和创新的)”和第四段首句“Too few firms offer an accurate account of what a position actually involves in their job previews, which are supposed to give potential employees a real sense of the negatives and positives of the job, as well as a clear idea of the company’s corporate culture.(很少有公司能在工作预览中准确描述职位的实际内容,这本应让潜在员工真正了解工作的消极和积极因素,并清楚地了解公司的企业文化。)”
根据第四段“Too few firms offer an accurate account of what a position actually involves in their job previews, which are supposed to give potential employees a real sense of the negatives and positives of the job, as well as a clear idea of the company’s corporate culture. One effective strategy is to lay out in text or video what a typical day in the role would look like.(很少有公司能在工作预览中准确描述职位的实际内容,这本应让潜在员工真正了解工作的消极和积极因素,并清楚地了解公司的企业文化。一种有效的策略是通过文本或视频来展示角色的典型一天。)”可知,本段中表达的意思是,大家都期盼的职位预告是让公司准确描述职位的实际内容,让潜在员工真正了解工作的消极和积极因素,通过文本或视频来展示角色的典型一天。故选A项。
根据文章第一段“Hiring processes can be thought of as a battle between integrity and dishonesty. You might imagine this is a simple fight between truth-seeking firms and self-promoting candidates, and to a certain extent it is. But companies themselves tend to bend reality out of shape in ways that are self-defeating.(招聘过程可以被看作是诚信与不诚实之间的一场战斗。
D
“Woman reading book, under a night sky, dreamy atmosphere,” I type into Deep Dream Generator’s Text 2 Dream feature. In less than a minute, an image is returned to me showing what I’ve described.
Welcome to the world of AI image generation, where you can create what on the surface looks like top-rank artwork using just a few text prompts (提示). But closer examination shows oddities. The face of the woman in my image has very odd features, and appears to be holding multiple books. And, while there’s an initial thrill at seeing an image appear, there’s no creative satisfaction.
AI image generation could influence everything from film to graphic novels and more. Children’s illustrators were quick to raise concerns about the technology. They say AI-generated art is the exact opposite of what art is believed to be. Fundamentally, art is all about translating something that you feel internally into something that exists externally. Whatever form it takes, true art is about the creative process much more than it’s about the final piece. And simply pressing a button to generate an image is not a creative process.
Beyond creativity, there are deeper issues. To create images from prompts, AI generators rely on databases of already existing art and text. This could lead to the creation of images that are intentionally meant to imitate (模仿) the style of other artists, without their agreement. There is an argument that AI generators work no differently to humans when it comes to being influenced by others’ work. However, a human artist is also adding emotion and slight difference into the mix. AI doesn’t do the same—it can only copy.
The increasing use of AI will also lead to a devaluing of the work of artists. There’s already a negative prejudice towards the creative industry. People will begin to think that their “work” is as excellent as that created by someone who has spent a career making art. It’s nonsense, of course. You can use your mobile phone to take a nice picture of your daughter, but you are no match for professionals.

根据第二段中“But closer examination shows oddities. The face of the woman in my image has very odd features, and appears to be holding multiple books. And, while there’s an initial thrill at seeing an image appear, there’s no creative satisfaction. (但仔细观察就会发现一些奇怪之处。在我的图像中,这个女人的脸有着非常奇怪的特征,似乎拿着多本书。而且,虽然看到图像出现时会有一种最初的兴奋感,但却没有创造性的满足感)”可知,作者认为这张创作出的图像很奇怪,无法令人满意。故选C项。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Fundamentally, art is all about translating something that you feel internally into something that exists externally. Whatever form it takes, true art is about the creative process much more than it’s about the final piece. (从根本上说,艺术就是把你内心的感受转化成外在的东西。无论采用何种形式,真正的艺术都是关于创造过程而不是最终作品)”可知,儿童插画家最看重的是艺术的创作过程。故选D项。
【29题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Beyond creativity, there are deeper issues. 故选A项。
根据最后一段“The increasing use of AI will also lead to a devaluing of the work of artists. There’s already a negative prejudice towards the creative industry. People will begin to think that their “work” is as excellent as that created by someone who has spent a career making art. It’s nonsense, of course. You can use your mobile phone to take a nice picture of your daughter, but you are no match for professionals. A.

A
Too Much of a Good Thing — the Law of Unintended Consequences
C To prevent herself from sunburn.
B. To describe the hiring process of a large company.
27. What does the writer think of his image creation?
A. Exciting. B. Concerned.
C. Unsatisfying. D. Shocking.
28. What do children’s illustrators value most about art?
A. The final art work. B. External expressions in art.
C. The opposite of reality. D. The journey to creation.
29. What is paragraph 4 of the text mainly about?
A. The ethical concerns in AI art imitation.
B. Human artists’ influence on AI generators.
C. The superiority of human artworks.
D. The over-reliance of human on technology.
30. Which of the following best summarizes the last paragraph?
A. Art is the mirror of life. B. Rome is not built in a day.
C. No man can do two things at once. D. Don’t judge a book by its cover.
