The 29-year-old American, Conor Grennan, didn’t like to be a volunteer at first. He was not sure if he had the skills or a strong feeling for it. When he went to work at an orphanage (孤儿院) in Nepal (尼泊尔), his first thought was to make himself well-known. “I thought that if I volunteered just once, I could retell the story over and over,” Grennan said to a reporter in the Huffington Post.
However, his three-month stay in the orphanage turned into an unusual experience. Grennan gave up his job to begin a year’s long around-the-world trip. His first three months were spent in Nepal. When he arrived in the village, he knew nothing about the children or the local culture. When he opened the gate of the Little Princes Children’s Home, he was faced by the excited children.
The young American cared for 18 children there. He later found that they were trafficked (被拐卖的) children. So he walked through the mountains with great difficulty to find the kids’ families. “I started walking with photos of the kids,” he told the Reuter’s reporter. “I would get to the villages and show photos around. I went with 24 photos, and I found 24 families.”
At the same time, he put his heart into Nepalese culture. Grennan said, “Volunteering is the only best way to see how the rest of the world lives.”

Two baby pandas born in a French zoo have finally got names! They were named Yuan Dudu and Huan Lili on Nov 18. The names were chosen in an online vote (投票). There were five different pairs of names on the zoo’s website for people to pick. _______12_______ The names stand for friendship between France and China, as well as a wish for the babies’ good health.
Pandas usually have two names, a nickname (乳名) and an official name. The nickname is for baby pandas. ______13______ If there are twin baby pandas, the older one gets a nickname with the character “Da” and the younger gets a nickname with the character “Xiao”. They mean “older” and “younger” in Chinese. For example, the panda “Jingjing” gave birth to twins. The older one would be nicknamed “Jingda”, while the younger would be “Jingxiao”. _____14_____ Some pandas get their nicknames because of their appearances, while others are named after their birthplaces.
After they get their official names, nicknames are no longer used. This is because the pandas go into a special database (数据库). Their names will carry information about their family relationships. The pandas will also get a special code (编码) to show who they are, just like our ID card numbers. All of this helps with scientific research.
______15______ For example, the Chinese government will name a panda before giving it away as a gift to other countries.
A. This way, people can tell them from each other easily.
B. Two famous people chose the names for the baby pandas.

Mount Qomolangma is the highest mountain in the world. It is in Asia, which is home to all five of the world’s highest mountains. Mount Qomolangma’s peak (顶峰) is 5.5 miles above sea level. That is very high! So many climbers have tried to climb to the top of it to prove themselves. The first people to reach the peak were Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Since then, thousands of people have succeeded in climbing to the peak of Mount Qomolangma.
One of the most successful climbers is Erik Weihenmayer. Like all who try to climb this huge mountain, Erik faced strong winds, snow and avalanches (雪崩). However, what really made Erik’s climb unbelievable is the fact that he is blind. After losing his vision at age 13, Erik began climbing at age 16. He has climbed the tallest mountains on all seven continents (大陆). Erik became the first blind person to reach the peak of Mount Qomolangma.
At the age of 32, Erik began his climb as part of a 19-member team. His team wore bells that he could follow during his climb, and teammates were quick to warn (提醒) him of such things as a big drop on the right or a rock to the left. Erik also used long climbing poles and an ice ax to feel his way across the ice, rock, and snow on the mountain. During his climb, Erik faced many dangers. He struggled through 100 miles per hour winds and sliding snow, ice and rock. The higher Erik climbed, the thinner the air became, so he wore an oxygen mask. This helped him breathe as he climbed higher and higher. It took Erik about two and a half months to reach the top of this unbelievable mountain—Qomolangma.

C. If there is a third baby, it will get a nickname with “San” (“three”).

We should cut down trees less and protect their homes.
