Seahorses are small, thin fish. Even though they’re fish, seahorses aren’t great swimmers. Instead, they often use their tails (尾巴) to hold onto something in the water.
There are over forty different kinds of seahorses Many kinds of them are in danger because of the actions of humans. Sometimes people catch and sell them as pets. They are also sometimes caught by accident when boats are trying to catch other fish.
Seahorses are unusual because they are the fathers who carry the babies. Fathers can carryover 100 babies at a time. When babies are born, they are about the size of a grain of rice.
Last year, around 380 seahorses were set free into the wild. To begin the project, scientists collected three “pregnant (怀孕的)” father seahorses and brought them to the aquarium (水族馆). After the babies were born, the scientists kept them at the aquarium for five months, looking after them. About a month before the young seahorses were set free, the scientists created eight underwater “hotels” to provide a safe place for them to develop. Putting the hotels into the sea early allowed the hotels to be covered with small sea life that can help provide food for the seahorses.
This is the fifth time the scientists have set free seahorses into the area. Brett Fenton, a scientist of this project, said, “We have high expectations (期待) that we’ll see the number of the animals grow.”
9. What makes many kinds of seahorses in danger?
A. Humans’ actions. B. Weather changes.
C. Food problems. D. Unknown diseases.
10. According to the text, father seahorses take the responsibility to ________.
A. look for food B. carry the babies
C. protect homes D. fight with others
11. Why did the scientists create eight “hotels” for the young seahorses?
A. To help them live safely underwater.
B. To stop them from swimming away.
C. To train them to rely on themselves.
D. To see if they could live on their own.
12. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. There would be more other projects for seahorses.
B. Scientists saved seahorses in other areas five times.
C. The project might be a success for saving seahorses.
D. The number of baby seahorses hasn’t increased a lot.
D
We’ve driven gas-powered cars for over 100 years. Once we run out of all the oil, we can’t make more. Is it time for a change?
Go electric
An electric car has an electric motor (发动机) that runs on batteries. Instead of filling with gas, an electric car owner get it charged (充电). What happens when the batteries run down? You need to find somewhere to recharge. It can take a long time to recharge an electric car. That’s not as easy to use as a quick stop at a gas station.
Hybrid (gas & electric)
A hybrid car has two engines—one uses gas and the other uses electricity. For short trips, it turns on batteries like an electric car. But if the batteries are low, the car can change to the gas engine. This can be a good choice for people who are worried about the batteries running out halfway through a trip. But when the car burns gas, it still gives off waste gases like a regular car.
Solar power
A solar car has an electric motor that runs on batteries. But the batteries are only charged by the solar panels (面板) on the car’s body. To charge up, you just need to park the car in the sun! But making solar panels and batteries that are powerful enough to move a car is very expensive. It might take much time before solar cars come to the public.
13. An electric motor in an electric car gets its power from ________.
A. oil B. batteries C. light D. gas
14. What is the problem with a hybrid car?
A. It runs out of its battery very quickly and easily.
B. It still produces harmful gases when burning gas.
C. It is very expensive to repair a broken hybrid car.
D. It is hard to change the electric engine to the gas one.
15. A solar power car is different from an electric one because ________.
A. it needs more electricity to move B. it is only charged by solar panels
C. it can be recharged in a quick stop D. its electric motor runs on batteries
16. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Three ways to take the place of gas. B. Types of different cars in the future.
C. Suggestions on reducing air pollution. D. Advantages of different kinds of cars.

I’m in 2074 now. Great changes have taken place in China. When I was young, I got a serious illness. Since then, I have dreamed of becoming a doctor. Now my dream has come true. I work in a hospital every day to save people’s lives. There are more advanced (先进的) medical services than before. Doctors can do operations even when they’re far away from the patients. Robots are also widely used in every home. They can do all of the housework. When you return home, your house is clean and tidy. We’re living a comfortable life.
Travelling to the moon has become popular. I know it’s hard for you to imagine, but it’s true. People between the ages of 18 and 60 are able to travel to the moon. I just bought a ticket and I’m going to travel to the moon soon. How exciting!
In 2074, everything is fantastic. But this is because people back in 2024 were working hard. Dear Mary, work hard and create your own bright future!
Yours,
Mary from 2074

We’ve driven gas-powered cars for over 100 years. Once we run out of all the oil, we can’t make more. Is it time for a change?
Go electric
An electric car has an electric motor (发动机) that runs on batteries. Instead of filling with gas, an electric car owner get it charged (充电). What happens when the batteries run down? You need to find somewhere to recharge. It can take a long time to recharge an electric car. That’s not as easy to use as a quick stop at a gas station.
