Section B (3a-3c) Grade Seven Type Writing Period Five Teaching background analysis Teaching materials analysis This lesson is from Unit 7 of PEP English Go for it, the second semester of Grade Seven. The topic of this unit is about weather. Section B (3a-3c) is the writing part of this unit. It’s a new and fun experience for students to write a postcard, some of them may have done it before, but it may be the first time for them to do it in class and also in English. Students have learned how to describe weather and people’s activities in Section A, so it won’t be a big challenge for them to write a post card. Students analysis After the learning of Section A, students now can describe the weather and people’s activities in the way they were taught. The writing part of this unit is designed to enhance and solid the knowledge, and to prepare them for the further study of writing. Teaching objectives 1. Knowledge and skill objects: To know about the standards of a good writing. 2. Process and method objects: Students will be able to write a post card, including the information like, location, weather, activities ...etc. 3. Emotion, attitude and value objects: When travel far away from home, remember to send love and care to the love ones back home. Key points Students are able to write postcards including the information: location, weather, feelings and activities. Difficulties Students can describe the weather and what people are doing using the correct tenses and verb phrases. How to write a postcard: ①Summarize the three elements of writing a postcard: (greeting, closing and the main part) and the four elements of vacation (location, weather, activities, and feelings). ②Review 2b and ask students to find more expressions of each element. ③Show students the standards of a good writing: correct grammar, good hand-writing, different sentences. Group work: Ask students to discuss the detail information in groups and write postcards. 1. Use the multi-media to present students’ postcards. 2. Evaluate the writing according to the three standards of a good writing. 3. Give students feedback. To help students sum up what they have learned. Give your reading a final touch, write the best version and hand it in next class. 1. Watch the video and pay attention to the activities Kate is doing in the video. 2. Answer the questions. Talk about Kate’s activities in the video. Complete Kate’s postcard and check the answers. Summarize the elements of writing a postcard. Think about what to write in a postcard. Compare the two postcards in 2b and try to find the target language. Take notes the whole time, and prepare to use the target language to polish the own writing. Discuss the detail information with their group members, write their own postcards. Check other’s writing with the teacher, correct the mistakes they shared in their own writings. Review the knowledge, try to sum up what they have learned with the teacher’s help. Correct the mistakes in their original postcards, write a new one, hand it in next class.
