After taking in their first child in 1978, a couple in Britain, now in their 80s, have fostered (代养) more than 150 children.
Margaret Isdale and her husband Robert have been given by local government a lifetime achievement award for their fostering efforts. The couple also has two children of their own and are currently caring for an eight-month-old baby, a report said.
“We just enjoy doing it, and I can’t imagine not doing it now,” Mrs. Isdale said. “You’re there to give them a certain period of safety, to allow them to experience being part of a family.”
The first child the couple cared for was a 14-year-old girl, who stayed with them for a week before returning to her birth parents. The couple have also looked after children with a range of needs. Once, they took care of a boy who underwent a kidney transplant (肾移植). The couple spent weeks in the hospital by his bedside.
“People say, how can you hand them over? Well, that’s part of what we do, and sometimes when you hand a child over, the birth parents keep in touch, and they say how appreciative they are. That in itself is a reward,” Mr. Isdale said.
Kim, a child born with a serious disease, died in 2005 at the age of 21 after travelling all over the world with the couple. The doctors had said that she would not live beyond nine months. “She taught us a lot. She was lovely, she had a good sense of humor, and she went everywhere with us,” Mr Isdale said.
The couple said they had no plans to retire from fostering, insisting they would continue caring for children as long as their health permitted them to.
Michelle Thompson from a Fostering Service, said she was “in awe” of the couple. “Their commitment to the fostering service over 46 years has been absolutely remarkable. The difference they’ve made to the children’s lives has been fantastic. Lots of those children have either gone back to their birth families or gone on to be adopted (领养).”
1. What is local government’s attitude toward the couple’s fosterage?
A. Favorable. B. Unconcerned. C. Expectant. D. Hesitant.
2. What is paragraph 4 mainly about concerning the couple’s fosterage?
A. The costs. B. The reasons. C. The difficulties. D. The experiences.
3. Why does the author mention Kim’s story?
A. To call for acts of kindness. B. To express love for the child.
C. To prove the value of fosterage. D. To show support for the couple.

由文章第二段第一句“Margaret Isdale and her husband Robert have been given by local government a lifetime achievement award for their fostering efforts.(Margaret Isdale和她的丈夫被当地政府授予了终身成就奖以表彰他们的代养努力。)” 故选A。
根据文章第四段“The first child the couple cared for was a 14-year-old girl, who stayed with them for a week before returning to her birth parents. The couple have also looked after children with a range of needs. Once, they took care of a boy who underwent a kidney transplant(肾移植). The couple spent weeks in the hospital by his bedside.(这对夫妇照顾的第一个孩子是一个14岁的女孩,她只待了一周就回到了亲生父母身边。
根据文章第六段“Kim, a child born with a serious disease, died in 2005 at the age of 21 after travelling all over the world with the couple. The doctors had said that she would not live beyond nine months. “She taught us a lot. She was lovely, she had a good sense of humor, and she went everywhere with us,” Mr Isdale said.(患有严重疾病的儿童Kim与这对夫妇周游世界后,于2005年去世,享年21岁。

Zach Hackett was 12,000 feet up a Colorado mountain last May when he thought he heard a weak sound. As he walked through a clearing, Hackett, 33, found the source: a black-and-white sheepdog.
“I was a little surprised, because dogs shouldn’t be up there so high,” said Hackett, who had been hiking all day in the mountain. Spring temperatures dropped below zero at night, and the dog looked near death. “I believe what I’d heard was his last cry for help, and that if I hadn’t come along, he would have died there,” Hackett said.
Five weeks earlier, Mike Krugman, 74, had let his dog Riley out for a walk. When the dog didn’t come back, Krugman didn’t worry at first. But later, he became concerned and rode around his farm to look for Riley. He thought Riley might have gone looking for his wife Pam, who had died months earlier. When Pam passed away, Riley hid behind the bed for several days. The next morning, Krugman looked for the dog in the snow and asked a local animal shelter to help search. A volunteer posted “missing” posters and searched the area for Riley. But no one found him.
After Hackett spotted the weak dog, he put Riley in a coat and carefully picked his way down. He thought he had to cross the river instead of walking around it, or it would have taken too long. When he reached his apartment, he ran a warm bath for Riley. “I gave him some water, and cooked some eggs for him,” Hackett says. Hackett cared for Riley through the night, and then drove him to a nearby shelter in the morning.
“People at the shelter were shocked when they checked the records and learned Riley had been gone for five weeks and one day,” he said. In that moment, Hackett realized why Riley was so weak when he found him.
Riley weighed 24 pounds when he went missing and had lost half of his body weight. “I got this call from the shelter, and they said someone had brought Riley in,” Krugman recalled. “Of course, I cried. Riley’s survival is a wonder.”
4. What can be learned about Riley according to paragraph 3?
A. He received little attention. B. He had affection for Pam.
C. He liked to hide in the snow. D. He seldom walked by himself.
5. Why did Hackett choose to cross the river?
A. To get away from danger. B. To give Riley timely care.
C. To send Riley back to Krugman. D. To get to the nearby shelter.
6. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Mountain Mysteries: The Search for Riley B. Lost and Found: A Journey of Exploration
C. The Wonder of Riley: A Mountain Rescue D. A Hiker’s Discovery: The Secret of a Mountain

Can talking to other people online help socially isolated (孤立的) older adults in any way? A new research is seeking evidence to prove the benefits of online social communications.
Lead author Hiroko Dodge started the study about ten years ago, recognizing the harmful effects of social isolation. The experiment, known as I-CONNECT, involved 186 participants aged 75 years and older. The experiment used the Internet to allow for conversational communications between the participants and trained interviewers. To make the experience more interesting, the researchers ensured that the participants had different conversation partners each time, and they provided daily topics and pictures. The experiment lasted a year, with 30-minute conversations held four times a week for the first six months and then twice a week for an additional six months.
At the end of the first six-month period, the participants showed higher cognitive (认知的) test scores compared to another group who did not take part in such conversations. And, at the end of the second six-month period, the participants had test scores indicating better memory-related brain function and improved emotional well-being.
Following the experiment, Dodge and her teammates established the I-CONNECT Foundation, aiming at providing social communications to socially isolated older individuals in the community free of charge.
“Our next goal is to extend these activities to reach more isolated people in need, as well as to study how social communications impact our brain functions,” said Dodge. “Providing frequent stimulating (有促进作用的) conversational communications through the Internet could be an effective home-based strategy against social isolation and cognitive problem.”
Human contacts are important for our emotional well-being. The team is currently researching into chatbots (聊天机器人) as they are aware that chatbots might work as effectively as humans for cognitive stimulations.
7. How did researchers make the conversational communications more engaging?
A. By using trained interviewers. B. By limiting the length of talks.
C. By increasing the frequency of talks. D. By arranging unfixed talking partners.
8. What are the findings of the experiment?
A. Socially isolated people tend to talk online.
B. Online chatting improves cognitive function.
C. High cognitive ability ensures positive emotions.
D. Wide-ranging topics benefit the elderly’s memory.
9. What is one goal of the I-CONNECT Foundation?
A. Increase the sales of chatbots. B. Organize face-to-face activities.
C. Struggle against social isolation. D. Study new ways of communication.
10. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To present findings of Dodge’s team. B. To improve the latest technology.
C. To introduce a non-profit organization. D. To draw attention to a social problem.
D 8. B 9. C 10. D

I was in the ninth grade; my teacher Miss Weaver asked me to join her stage design team for a play.(我是偶然爱上舞台设计的。 点明作者爱上舞台设计是在九年级的时候,因此应该是第一句,引领全文;第一句中“my teacher Miss Weaver asked me to join her stage design team for a play(我的老师Miss Weaver邀请我加入她的舞台剧设计团队)”提到这种的老师邀请作者加入她的舞台剧设计团队,然后就应该讲作者对老师的邀请给的回答,C选项“I told her that I didn’t know anything about it. But Miss Weaver said, “Give it a try, in case you have a talent for it!” So, I became part of her team. Miss Weaver turned out to be right-I was good at stage design!(我告诉她我对那件事一无所知。 说明作者成为了老师的团队中的一员,接下来就应该对老师进行评价或描述,A选项“Miss Weaver was strict and spoke in a direct manner, but she was always encouraging and inspiring.(Miss Weaver很严厉,说话很直接,但她总是鼓励和鼓舞人。)”是对Miss Weaver的描述,应该是第三句话;第三句“Miss Weaver was strict and spoke in a direct manner, but she was always encouraging and inspiring.(Miss Weaver很严厉,说话很直接,但她总是鼓励人。)”说明了老师很严厉,但她总是鼓励人,接下来就应该举例说明她是如何鼓励人,D选项“For example, if we could not figure out what kind of stage design to create for a scene, she would say, “In that case, think about the plot from a different point of view. You never know what will pop into your mind!”(例如,如果我们不知道应该为一个场景设计什么样的舞台设计,她会说:“在这种情况下,从不同的角度考虑情节。” 举例说明了老师如何鼓励人,因此是第四句;最后一句应该是总结全文,说明学习舞台设计对作者的影响及作者对老师的感激,E选项“I have to say, learning stage design greatly broadened my mind. And thanks to Miss Weaver, I began to have more confidence in my own creativity, and I developed such a strong interest in stage design that I realized I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing it.(我不得不说,学习舞台设计极大地开阔了我的眼界。
Art appreciation isn’t just for art experts, and it certainly doesn’t require a fine arts degree. ____12____ In this post, we’ll talk about how art makes us feel, what it can mean, and how colors are used in art.
The first step to appreciating art is to think about how it makes you feel. Do you feel calm or happy when you look at it? Or does it make you feel excited or sad? ____13____ Everyone has different feelings about art, and that’s okay. Over time, you’ll find the kinds of art that you like the most.
Artworks often contain more than what meets the eye. ____14____ For example, a heart might mean love, or a flag might mean freedom. However, symbols can also be deeply personal to the artist. This means they can show what the artist believes, has experienced, or hopes for. When you see symbols in art, think about what they might mean. Can they help you understand the artist’s life or ideas?
____15____ Artists often use them to express emotions or ideas. For example, Van Gogh’s The Starry Night uses massive circles of white and yellow to create a sense of wonder and turbulence (动荡). By knowing how colors work in art, you can understand the artist’s idea better.

Michelle Thompson, from a Fostering Service, said she was “in awe” of the couple.

C By increasing the frequency of talks.
