Imagine going to sleep at night and not knowing if you’ll wake up safely. That’s the difficulty Allison, who lives with diabetes (糖尿病), has had for years. “My blood sugar can jump from 40 to 400. It is very scary,” Allison said. “The scariest time may be when I sleep at night. If my blood sugar drops too low, I will risk falling into a coma (昏迷).” So Allison realized she needed a new way of self-protection. It has come in the form of a four-legged friend, Juno.
Juno is a Diabetic Alert (警示) Dog. It is trained to smell the changes in Allison’s blood sugar, and remind her to take action when it reaches dangerous levels. He was trained in a dog school in Las Vegas. The trainers put cotton balls in Allison’s mouth when her blood sugar level was too high or too low and let Juno get used to the smell. That way Juno can tell when Allison is in danger.
“When I’m sound asleep, and I don’t feel the abnormal blood sugar level, Juno jumps up on me, telling that you’re starting to smell funny, you’re in danger, you need to wake up,” explained Allison.
We all know alarm clocks are easily forgotten about, turned off or not paid attention to. But when you have a 50-pound animal jumping on your body at 2:00 a.m., you have to get up!
11. Why is nighttime scary for Allison?

15. What is the best title of the passage?

When I joined UNICEF (联合国儿童基金会) China as a volunteer, I couldn’t wait to help solve some big social problems right away. But at first, my job was only to interview the new staff (员工) about their training. I did what I was told to do, but to be honest, I didn’t feel like I was creating the value I imagined. After a few days, my fellow volunteers and I were asked to make a video for UNICEF China. In doing so, I was able to work with some experienced staff and learn how they understood their job. Thanks to it, I have learned several important lessons.

For example, it might take ages to help build up one school. Once it begins, it can grow and develop further. Moreover, I find that even the “smallest thing” we do can be valuable.
Later on, the video was completed. It showed what UNICEF China did. In it, some staff were working at the front line (前线), some were doing paper work in the office and I was interviewing the new staff. I see that everyone is helping in their own ways, no matter how small the act is. Together, we are making a difference to our society and creating a brighter future for our children.
