As a high school coach, I did all I could to help my boys win their games. I
cheered as hard for victory as they did. But a game in which I was a referee(裁判),
changed my opinion on victories and defeats.
It was a basketball game between New Rochelle and Yonkers High. New Rochelle
was coached by Dan OBrien, Yonkers by Les Beck. The gym was crowded, and the
noise made it impossible to hear. The game was well played and very close. Yonkers
was leading by one point as I looked at the clock and discovered there was only 30
seconds left.
Yonkers took control of the ball, passed off and shot. The ball rolled around the
edge of the basket and off. The fans shouted. New Rochelle, the home team, got the
ball, and tapped(投进) it in for what looked like victory. The noise of shouts was
deafening(震耳欲聋的).
I took a quick look at the clock and saw that the game was over. I hadnt heard the
final buzzer(终场哨) because of the noise. I checked with the other official, but he
could not help me. So I turned to the timekeeper, a young man. He said, “Sir, the
buzzer went off before the final tap-in was made. ”
Yonkers won!
I had to tell Coach OBrien the sad news. His face clouded over. The young
timekeeper came up and said, “ Im sorry, Dad. The time ran out before the final
basket. ”
Suddenly, like the sun coming out from behind a cloud, Coach OBriens face lit
up. He said, “Thats okay, Joe! You did what you had to. Im proud of you. ”
They then walked away together, with the coachs arm around his sons shoulder.

Everyone knows that good sleep is important for our health. Not
everyone know how important it is to sleep in the dark. A new report
says sleeping with a light on could be bad for our health and turning off
the lights when we sleep could help to keep away from diabetes(糖尿病) and heart
disease.
According to the report, around 40 percent of people sleep with some sort of
artificial light such as light from a television or an alarm clock, which could influence
our health. The worst thing to sleep with is a main light. Sleeping in the dark is more
difficult for people who live in cities where there is a lot of outdoor light at night.
Dr Phyllis Zee is the lead researcher from the Northwestern University Feinberg
School of Medicine in Chicago, the USA. Her team studied 20 participants(参与者).
They recorded their brainwaves, breathing, heart rates and also drew blood from them
to measure melatonin(褪黑激素) levels while they were sleeping.
They found that the participants who slept with a light on had higher blood sugar
(血糖) levels the next morning compared to those who slept in total darkness. Dr Zee
said this is because light makes their brain more active, which raises blood sugar
levels. Besides, having the light on when the participants were sleeping made their
heart rates increase, which in turn made it harder for their body to rest properly.
“Thats bad. Usually, your heart rate is lower at night and higher during the day,” the
researcher said.
Dr Zee said, “Make sure that you start dimming your lights at least an hour or two
before you go to bed to prepare your environment for sleep. There are three things we
can do to reduce the risk of illness: turn off the lights, never sleep with white or blue
light, and use a curtain or wear an eye mask. ”
8. According to the report, why is it more difficult for people in cities to sleep in the
dark?
A. They have more pressure. B. They usually work till midnight.
C. They enjoy a colourful night life. D. They cant escape from outdoor light.
9. The researchers did the following things EXCEPT .
A. drawing blood from the participants
B. recording the participants breathing
C. waking the participants up in the midnight
D. measuring the participants melatonin levels
10. What may be a result of sleeping with a light on?
A. Making the brain less active. B. Raising blood sugar levels.
C. Lowering the heart rate. D. Helping the body rest well.
11. Whats the main idea of the text?
A. Sleep in darkness is better! B. Sleep is very important.
C. Good sleep is good for our health. D. Bad sleep causes diseases.
D

Like tree leaves, no two human beings are exactly the same. Theyve got different eyes
and different hair. And everyone has a different way of working or moving.
This technology can tell you from others. At the moment if you travel through an
airport, you need your ID card or passport. If you go to your bank to get some money,
you need a card and a special number. But what should you do if you lose your passport
or forget your number? Biometric technology can solve this problem. The technology is
becoming more and more popular with old people because they no longer need to
remember their passwords(密码).
This technology is all around us in our life. We use them to unlock a smart phone,
get into our homes, start our cars without a key or even pay for our shopping.
