B When the leaves begin to change their colors and the birds head south, we know the season is starting to change. On September 7 comes White Dew, the 15th solar term (节气) of the year. It indicates the beginning of the cool autumn. As the temperature falls, white dew is often seen on the grass and trees at night. For writers and poets, autumn is a difficult season to describe. It’s the end of the summer, and therefore a little sad. The days seem to get shorter, and when you wake in the morning, there’s mist and it’s cooler. Winter is just around the corner. American writer Ernest Hemingway wrote in his book A Moveable Feast (《流动的盛宴》), “You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintry light. ” But on the other hand, autumn has its good side. There are so many changes at this time of year, such as the colorful leaves and cooler nights. French writer Albert Camus even thought autumn was a second spring, “when every leaf is a flower.” This view is also found in the most famous autumn poem in English literature, To Autumn by John Keats. In that poem, Keats says that autumn has its own songs, just like spring. Another theme of this season is wisdom. The arrival of autumn is thought to be similar to a person becoming mature. The great Irish poet W. B. Yeats used this idea in his poem The Wild Swans at Coole (《库尔的野天鹅》), writing about the changing seasons in Coole Park in the west of Ireland. Seeing and counting 59 swans, he remembers first making the count as a young man. Seeing the swans do the same thing for all those years, he’s reminded that even though we get older, our hearts always stay the same age. 24. What can be concluded about White Dew? A. It is often ignored by writers and poets. B. It is the time of year with the most rainfall. C. It is when the temperature begins to drop. D. It indicates the end of the autumn. 25. A Moveable Feast was mentioned to ______. A. point out that autumn is very cold B. present the sad part of autumn C. show that winter will soon come D. express sadness about the end of life 26. What does “this idea” in the last paragraph refer to? A. Autumn is an important season for man. B. We can always stay young at heart. C. Autumn is related to one’s growing old. D. Nature is full of lessons to be learned. 27. What’s the article mainly about? A. The solar term White Dew. B. Why autumn is a sad season. C. Autumn weather and activities. D. Famous writers’ description of autumn. C Ralph Emerson once said that the purpose of life is not to be happy, but to be useful, to be loving, to make some difference in the world. While we appreciate such words of wisdom, we seldom try to follow them in our lives. Most people prefer to live a good life themselves, ignoring their responsibilities for the world. This narrow perception of a good life may provide shortterm benefits, but is sure to lead to longterm harm and suffering. A good life based on comfort and luxury may eventually lead to more pain because we spoil our health and even our character, principles, ideals, and relationships. What then, is the secret of a good life? A good life is a process, not a state of being : a direction, not a destination. We have to earn a good life by first serving others without any expectation in return because their happiness is the very source of our own happiness. More importantly, we must know ourselves inside out. Only when we examine ourselves deeply can we discover our abilities and recognize our limitations, and then work accordingly to create a better world. The first requirement for a good life is having a loving heart. When we do certain right things merely as a duty, we find our job so tiresome that we’ll soon burn out. However, when we do that same job out of love, we not only enjoy what we do, but also do it with an effortless feeling. However, love alone is insufficient to lead a good life. Love sometimes blinds us to the reality. Consequently, our good intentions may not lead to good results. To achieve desired outcome, those who want to do good to others also need to equip themselves with accurate world knowledge. False knowledge is more dangerous than ignorance. If love is the engine of a car knowledge is the steering wheel(方向盘). If the engine lacks power, the car can’t move; if the driver loses control of the steering, a road accident probably occurs. Only with love in heart and the right knowledge in mind can we lead a good life. 高一上 10 月检测 英语 试卷第 5 页共 10 页 高一上 10 月检测 英语 试卷第 6 页共 10 页 With love and knowledge, we go all out to create a better world by doing good to others. When we see the impact of our good work on the world, we give meaning to our life and earn lasting joy and happiness. 28. What effect does the narrow perception of a good life have on us? A. Making us simpleminded B. Making us shortsighted. C. Leading us onto a busy road. D. Keeping us from comfort and luxury. 29. According to the author, how can one gain true happiness? A. Through maintaining good health. B. By going through pain and suffering. C. By recognizing one’s abilities and limitations. D. Through offering help much needed by others. 30. In what case may good intentions fail to lead to desired results? A. When we have wrong knowledge of the world. B. When our love for the world is insufficient. C. When we are insensitive to dangers in life. D. When we stay blind to the reality. 31. According to Paragraph 5, life can be made truly good when ________. A. inspired by love and guided by knowledge B. directed by love and pushed by knowledge C. purified by love and enriched by knowledge D. promoted by love and defined by knowledge D Electric vehicles (EVs) now are not practical for longdistance travel due to the need for repeated or lengthy stops at charging stations. But what if they could—like planes being refueled in the air from another aircraft—get a chargeonthego? The idea sounds impossible, but there are already technologies in use that would help charge specialized vehicles. With rural electric charging stations almost nonexistent, Swarup Bhunia and engineers at the University of Florida, Gainesville, are suggesting that“cartocar charging”and“mobile charging stations”could likely solve this problem faster than the sudden increase of charging points or battery advancements. Along with mobile charging stations idea, Bhunia believes that if more and more people buy electric cars, it would be superefficient if all cars on road could share charge with one another. What Bhunia and his team are describing is a cloud system that examines all of the EV drivers on the road, where they are going, and how much charge each vehicle has. The cloud then determines, for example, that EVA has an 89% battery charge, but requires only 4% to reach its destination, while EVB has a 22% battery charge, yet requires 31% to reach its destination. If the two EVs are going in the same direction, the system would instruct them to carry out the charge transfer. The system would then link the provider with the receiver, and a credit system would ensure that everyone is paying for the charge they use. Inside the given traffic network, every vehicle charge could be examined against each vehicle's demand, and “mobile charging stations”, which would be large automated trucks with onboard charging equipment to fill in the demand gaps. “We imagine a safe and firm telescopic arm(伸缩臂) carrying the charging cable,” said Bhunia, describing how to get one charge into another car while running down the freeway, much like to aircraft during midair refueling. After two EVs lock speed and are in range for charge sharing, they will extend their charging arms. 32. To realize longdistance travel for EVs faster, Bhunia agrees with ________. A. stops at charging stations B. mobile charging stations C. increase of charging points D. battery advancements 33. According to the text, the cloud system can do the following but ________. A. guide the EV drivers to complete the charge transfer B. determine where EVs are going and how EVs will be charged C. figure out how much charge a car needs to reach its destination D. guarantee that all the drivers are paying for the charge they get 34. What are mobile charging stations? A. Power plants for the charge transfer. B. Charging equipment to fill in the charge gaps. C. Vehicles providing charge for other cars. D. Trucks getting charges from other vehicles. 35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Can we charge EVs with cartocar mobile charging? B. Can charging points be a possible way to charge EVs? C. How does a cloud system make charging EVs easier? D. How do we charge EVs with mobile charging stations? 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Many people think that positive thinking is mostly about keeping one’s head in the sand and ignoring daily problems, trying to look optimistic. In reality it has more to do with the way an individual talks to himself. Self-talk is a constant stream of thoughts of a person, who is often unaware and uncertain of some events, phenomena, people, or even the person himself. 36 Meanwhile, positive thinking can help to stop negative self-talks and start to form a positive view on an issue. People who regularly practise positive thinking tend to solve problems more effectively. They are less exposed to stress caused by external factors. They tend to believe in themselves and in what they do. 37 People who think positively demonstrate increased life spans lower rates of depression and anxiety, better physical and psychological health, reduced risks of death from heart problems. Positive thinking also contributes to one’s ability to deal with problems and hardships. 38 For example, researchers have found that in the case of a crisis accompanied by strong emotions, such as a natural disaster, positive thinking can provide a sort of buffer against depression and anxiety. Resilient people who think positively tend to treat every problem as a challenge, a chance for improvement of any kind, or as an opportunity for personal growth. Pessimists, on the contrary, tend to perceive problems as a source of additional stress. 39 In conclusion, positive thinking is a powerful and effective tool for dealing with hard times and improving the quality of one’s life. It doesn’t have anything to do with ignorant optimism when an individual refuses to notice a problem. 40 Thinking in a positive, self-encouraging way brings about many benefits to one’s physical and mental health. A. It doesn’t cause any severe emotional discomfort, either. B. Negative self-talk damages self-confidence and decreases self-respect. C. It helps one to remain clear-headed and confident in difficult situations. D. Positive thinking has several beneficial effects on the body and the mind. E. As thinking changes, an individual’s behaviour and habits change as well. F. They often offer a real alternative to the common and regular way of thinking. G. They often feel discouraged long before trying to solve the problem, even if small. 41. To fully realize your potential(为了充分实现你的潜力), it is important for you to make the most of our school resources(充分利用我们的学校资源). 第四部分 写作(共一节,满分 15 分) Dear classmates, After entering No.29 High School, I find large numbers of students confused/puzzled about their future. If you are eager to solve the problem, please set your own goals. As Alburt Einstein wisely put it, “If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal.” Setting goals is of great significance in many ways. Not only does setting goals offer you a focus, enabling you to decide what to achieve, but also help you make plans in advance, manage your time well and become more confident. But how can you set practical goals? First of all, based on your ability, set goals that can be achieved. Secondly, break big goals down into small ones, which are easier to reach. With each small goal realized, you will gain encouragement to achieve your long-term goal. Most importantly, after setting a goal, stick to it and work hard towards it with a positive mind. By following the tips above, I do believe you won’t be confused any more and will succeed in time. Yours sincerely, Li Hua 详解 A【文章大意】 本文是应用文,主要介绍了一系列流媒体服务和频道。 21. It doesn't have anything to do with ignorant optimism when an individual refuses to notice a problem. A。 41. M: I’m sorry. I wanted to go swimming. (1) It’s just a dollar. I was going to use these coins I’d saved, but I dropped them. Text 2 M: How many days are you working one week? W: Aw, let me see, I work Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at the restaurant…and Saturday afternoon. M: That’s good. Then we can go shopping on Sunday. (2) Text 3 M: How many tickets do you need for the play? The Friday performance is already sold out. W: Oh, no! I really wanted to see it on Friday night. But I guess I can go on Saturday afternoon instead. (3) Text 4 W: Would you like to help me cook tonight? I’m making Mexican food. I know you love it. And I think you should start learning to cook, since you’re leaving for college soon. M: Sure, Mom! You’re right. I need to be able to feed myself when I’m on my own. (4) Text 5 M: Over here is the weight room. Down the hall is the entrance to the pool. And over there is the classroom where we host our classes like yoga and cycling. (5) W: Wow, this is great! I’d like to sign up for a membership. Text 6 W: There is a man trying to cut in line over there. M: Someone should stop him. It’s not fair. We have waited for such a long time. W: No one likes to wait, but we should obey the rules and be polite. M: Yes. Even the most polite Englishmen don’t like waiting in line. W: Really? M: Yes. I read a survey that the average British adult is able to stand in line for only 10 minutes and 42 seconds before he becomes annoyed. (6) W: That’s interesting. Standing in line is really a waste of time. M: So nowadays, most British people would rather avoid lines entirely. About 90% of them choose to pay their bills online now. (7) Text 7 W: Hey, Tom. When does college start for you? In August? (8) M: Well, I actually decided to take a year off. (8) W: Really? Are your parents disappointed? M: Well, they weren’t happy about it, but I told them my plan and they’ve accepted it. W: Really? What is your plan? M: Well, I want to major in computer science. But I know it can be difficult to find a job after college. So, I decided to move in with my uncle in Silicon Valley and volunteer at his company to get some experience first. (8) I’ll start college next year, and I’ll already know a lot about the field. W: Well, it sounds like you really know what you want to do. My brother graduated from college last year, (9) and he still doesn’t know what he wants to do. I’m worried that it may take a while before he gets a really good job. Text 8 W: I’d like to get a snack before we go into the theater. (10) M: Perfect! I usually go for popcorn and a soda. (10) It’s such a classic. W: Yeah, I used to get that before every movie myself. But then I started getting real food. M: What do you mean by “real food”? (11) W: Nowadays, many movie theaters are offering things that are closer to what you might find at a café. (11) It used to be that hot dogs were the only other hot food besides popcorn. But sandwiches and fresh French fries are just as common now. M: Really? I guess I never noticed that before. Let’s see what they’ve got here… W: Well, I’m definitely going for the fried chicken and a side salad. And look, you can even get beer! (12) M: It’s great. We should come to this theater more often. W: OK. But a lot of theaters are doing this now, you know… (12) Text 9 (第16题为推断题) W: Are you going to the student information session on Monday at 1:00 p.m.? I am deciding whether or not to go. (13) Do you think it’s really necessary? M: Well, it’s not required, but I’m going anyway. It will be a good introduction to the course, and it will probably cover a lot of useful information about the upcoming semester. (14) W: Maybe you’re right. It’s just that I hate being in large groups. I’m not going to know anyone there. (13) M: You’ll know me, though. Besides, I think it will be a good chance to meet people, and there will probably be times when we will have to work together in groups. (14) W: Our course outline seems to have all the information we need. I can’t see there is anything new to discuss. M: I heard there will be a former graduate there to provide details about what kind of job opportunities are out there after we graduate. It could be more helpful than you think. (14) W: I don’t know… M: I’ll be with you the entire time, I promise. See you at 10:00 a.m.? (15) W: Fine. (15) Text 10 Hot Springs is a fascinating city located in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas, in the southern United States. (17) The famous hot springs give the city its name. (18) People from all over the U.S. have been traveling there for almost 200 years to take baths in the hot water. These hot waters come naturally from the earth. (18) They were once thought to act like a kind of medicine for those who bathed in them. Although they are now known to not carry any special powers, people still travel from far away to enjoy the calming heat of the natural pools. Temperatures of the hot water can reach 145 degrees Fahrenheit! (19) The city is fascinating for other reasons, too.
