Lesson plan: Unit 10 I’d like some noodles. Section B (2a-2c) Analysis of the teaching content The lesson is from Unit 10 of PEP English Go for it, the second semester of Grade 7. It is the reading part of this unit. The topic of the unit is food, and the reading material of this lesson is a text named Birthday Food Around the World. The text has a very clear structure: The first paragraph opens the text by asking and answering what people would like to eat on their birthday. The second paragraph talks about birthday food in many countries. The third paragraph gives an example talking about the birthday food in China, and the last paragraph tells the idea behind these birthday food. Analysis of the students Students of Grade 7 are very familiar with and interested in the topic of lesson. And also, when coming to the reading part of this unit, the students will have prior knowledge of the vocabulary required to understand the text. So it won’t be a big challenge for them to learn this lesson. Yet, they are still lack of the using of reading strategies. The most important thing of learning the reading part is never about words or phrases, but the different reading strategies that suit different kinds of texts. Teaching objectives By the end of the class, students are expected to 1. be able to use different reading strategies to get the target information. 2. get information from analyzing the picture and title of the text before reading. 3. understand the meaning of birthday food and people’s pursuit for beauty in life. 4. reflect on other special food people eat on other special days. Important and difficult points 1. Use effective reading strategies to process the information for better understanding. 2. Understand people’s pursuit for beauty in life. While-reading: Read for skills (reading strategies) Fast reading on the title and main idea of each paragraph 1. Read the title and answer two questions: -What does the text talk about? -Is the text about only one country or about many countries? 2. Choose one from the four structures. 3. Match the main ideas with each paragraph. 1. Introduce a common type of structure: from general to specific. 2. Introduce the reading strategy: Read the first sentence of each paragraph. 3. Another reading strategy: locate information with key words. While-reading: Read for comprehension Detailed reading focusing on understanding 1. Finish the task True or False. No.1: People always eat the same food in different countries on their birthday. No.2: Six candles tells us this person is six years old. No.3: In the US, we can find a candy in the birthday cake. No.4: Dumplings and eggs are Chinese birthday food. 2. Check up the answers and discuss the answers for more details. 1. The sentences in True or False task are used as scaffolding for students to understand the text and find more detailed information. 2. To help students build an English mindset. While-reading: Read for information 1. Read and fill the information in the chart. 2. Use reading strategies to locate the information. Apply the reading strategies students have learned from this class. Post-listening & Consolidation Language review: (words and phrases) Review the key phrases and words with the help of the mind-map. Focus on the basic language: To practice the language by locating the phrases in the text and filling them in the blanks. Homework Level A: Search for information about other kinds of birthday food. Draw a mind-map of it, and introduce it next class. Level B: What else can you do to show your love the loved ones? Write about your ideas.
