B After having her second child, 35-year-old Eman Wagdy Selim felt that she had a bigger purpose in life. Although her background was in language and translation, the young Egyptian woman, with her husband’s support, had an idea to create a platform called “Al Faraza” to provide high-quality fruits and vegetables at competitive prices. After listing 150 products, the platform began offering meat and cheese as well through start-up companies. In 2019, Eman developed the project further into an app that allowed Egyptian women and other small-business owners who sold homemade meals, as well as local farmers, to bring their products to a wider audience. Today, “Al Faraza”, an Egyptian word that refers to careful and attentive selection, supports Egyptian women in particular, providing them with job opportunities and income to secure decent lives for themselves and their families. They also have access to training opportunities to learn how to best prepare, market and sell homemade food to customers in Egypt through the app. Eman’s idea only became a reality after she heard about the One Million Arab Coders Initiative, which provides online training courses to help Arab youth build and master coding (编码) skills so they can pursue jobs in digital technologies and develop their own high-tech projects. She enrolled in the Initiative’s Data Analysis track, where she learned how to transform data into successful ideas. Acquiring these skills was a vital step towards the success of “Al Faraza”, and Eman is proud of the personal growth and achievements she has experienced thanks to the Initiative. Overjoyed at the success of her project, Eman says, “‘Al Faraza’ has helped change the lives of 800 Egyptian women, and we will continue to grow and develop our project. We promise that we will expand the app’s reach to be accessible to all Egyptian women, wherever they are, so that we can grow together as one team.” 4. What can we know about “Al Faraza”? A. It was created in 2019. B. It only sells homemade products. C. The prices of its products are the lowest. D. It offers a wide range of excellent products. 5. What can Egyptian women learn from “Al Faraza”? A. Coding skills. B. Marketing skills. C. Communication skills. D. Language skills. 6. What is the key to Eman’s success? A. The financial support from her husband. B. Her working experience in the Initiative. C. Her background in language and translation. D. Her skills learnt from online training courses. 7. Which of the following can best describe Eman? A. Peace-loving and strong. B. Kind-hearted and capable. C. Hard-working and brave. D. Good-tempered and clever. C Children’s books for those under age five often include science. Well before they enter their first classroom, children eagerly explore their environment in search of answers to an endless stream of why and how questions. Roughly 1,100 books begin with “How do...”. Of those, about one tenth are about engineering and science (e.g., How Do Airplanes Fly? and How Do Animals Move?). In that tenth, the vast majority (well over 90%) are children’s books. Children seem to be more interested in the hows and whys of the world than adults. A burst of research in the last decade confirms the apparent pattern in book titles. From three to six years of age, children ask many how and why questions, but then those questions decrease quickly during the elementary school years and beyond. Most children naturally love science, but this love often disappears as they grow up. Is it a problem with science itself? Despite some claims to that, the real cause is a decline in wonder. Wonder is the engine that drives exploration and discovery; and when it disappears, a strong feeling of love for the workings of the world melts away. Every child wants to know how the world works. We are all born with wonder-with curious minds, fascinated by the world around us. Young children and even babies are naturally engaging in attractive science every day, often with complex methods. This loss of wonder is not because we suddenly understand everything—we don’t but because distrust, disengagement, and denial can become embedded (嵌入) into many aspects of our lives. Besides, the consequences of this loss of wonder are profound. Because loss of wonder can lead to especially poor understandings of underlying mechanisms, we become weak to misinformation. Even worse, abandonment of wonder deprives (剥夺) us of the rewarding joy of discovery. This loss of wonder, however, is not unavoidable. We can all take simple actions to reawaken that initial spark and live lives lit by wonder. 8. When do children begin to ask how and why questions less frequently? A. When they are in elementary school. B. When they are three years old C. When they grow up into adulthood. D. When they attend secondary school. 9. Why does most children’s love of science fade by adulthood? A. They gradually lose their interest in science. B. Science becomes too complicated for them. C. Their childhood wonder declines over time. D. Adults are too busy to spend time on science. 10. What does the underlined word “profound” in Paragraph 5 mean? A. Excellent. B. Temporary. C. Far-reaching. D. Predictable. 11. What will the author most probably discuss in the following paragraphs? A. What adults can do to live a life lit by wonder. B. What the consequences of the loss of wonder are. C. Why the loss of wonder is not unavoidable for adults. D. Why wonder is important to people’s rewarding joy. D Recent experiments by psychologists at Temple University threw new light on how we learn and how we remember our real-world experiences. The research suggests that varying what we study and spacing out our learning over time can both be helpful for memory — it just depends on what we’re trying to remember. Benjamin Rottman, an associate professor of psychology said, “If you cram (塞进) the night before a test, you might remember the information the next day for the test, but you will probably forget it fairly soon. In contrast, if you study the material on different days leading up to the test, you will be more likely to recall it for a longer period of time.” But while the “spacing effect” is one of the most repeated findings in psychological research, much of this work has been predicated on the idea that what you are trying to learn — the content of the experience itself — repeats identically each time. Yet that is rarely the case in real life, when some features of our experiences may stay the same, but others are likely to change. For example, imagine repeat trips to your local coffee shop. While many features may stay the same on each visit, a new barista (咖啡师) may be serving you. “In contrast,” Rottman said, “we found that for associative memory benefited from stability. Spacing only benefited memory for the pairs that were repeated exactly, and only if there were pretty long gaps between study opportunities. For example, if you are trying to remember the new person’s name, it is more helpful to repeat that same exact name with spacing between each. ” Rottman continued, “This work demonstrates the benefits of spaced learning on memory are not absolute, instead depending on the variability present in the content across repetitions and the timing between learning opportunities, expanding our current understanding of how the way in which we learn information can impact how it is remembered. Our work suggests that both variability and spacing may present methods to improve our memory for isolated features and associative information, respectively, raising important applications for future research, education, and our everyday lives.” 12. How does the “spacing effect” benefit memory? A. By varying what we study. B. By stabilizing what we learn. C. By repeating the material exactly. D. By spreading out learning over time. 13. Why does Rottman mention the example of repeated trips to the coffee shop? A. To illustrate the “spacing effect”. B. To show the variability in real life. C. To stress the significance of memory. D. To explain the importance of stability. 14. What can we infer from the text? A. Repetition is not useful for memory. B. Real-life experiences are easy to forget. C. The findings of the research are limited. D. Memory can be improved by proper methods. 15. Which is the best title for the text? A. How to Improve Our Memory B. The Benefits of Spaced Learning C. Stability and Variability in Memory D. I already knew that it was another plastic sheep. She had done so since my 7th birthday, and it had become a tradition. For a long time, I couldn’t understand why she gave me a plastic sheep on my birthday. On my 20th birthday, my mum gave me a little box with another sheep. “Your grandma gave me this before she passed away,” Mum said. “She said that it was the last one.” I looked at the little plastic sheep and cried my eyes out. I deserted my little birthday party, leaving my brother’s children to devour (贪婪地吃) the birthday cake, and returned to my room. Carefully, I placed the new sheep on the shelf above my bed with the others. I used to wonder whether my grandmother had a memory problem, which was why she gave me a sheep year after year. But now, looking at them was the most comforting thing I could have asked for. “Clem?” my older brother Sheldon called from the doorway, taking a step into my room. “I miss her,” I said. “Even if I did think she was odd for the plastic sheep.” “So you haven’t figured it out yet?” Sheldon asked with a knowing smile. I shook my head. “Look underneath the sheep,” he said. In confusion, I turned it around and read the printed message beneath the sheep. “I love you,” followed by a number. And another number beneath one of the legs, keeping the order of the sheep. “Go to the bank, Clem” was the final message. I arranged the numbers in the order of the years my grandmother had gifted me the sheep. A bank account number emerged from the underbellies of the sheep. The following day, I went to the bank I knew my grandmother had dealt with. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ From that day onwards, I decided to use the savings wisely and made a positive impact on the world. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力1~5 BABCВ 6~10 AВСCА 11~15 CBABA 16~20 CCВCA 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 绝密★启用前 2023~2024学年度下学期期末质量检测 高二英语 全卷满分150分, 考试时间120分钟。 How much is the shirt? 9 Why does most children’s love of science fade by adulthood? A. They gradually lose their interest in science. B. Science becomes too complicated for them. C Their childhood wonder declines over time. 【答案】8. A 9. C 10. C 11. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章阐述好奇心从何而来以及它为什么会随着年龄增长而消失。好奇心的丧失对成年人的生活影响深远,但这并不是不可避免的,我们依旧可以点亮我们的好奇心。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“From three to six years of age, children ask many how and why questions, but then those questions decrease quickly during the elementary school years and beyond. (从三岁到六岁,孩子们会问很多“如何”和“为什么”的问题,但这些问题在小学及以后会迅速减少)”可知,孩子们问这些的数量在小学及以后的时间里急剧下降。故选A。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Most children naturally love science, but this love often disappears as they grow up. Is it a problem with science itself? Despite some claims to that, the real cause is a decline in wonder. (大多数孩子天生热爱科学,但这种热爱往往随着他们长大而消失。这是科学本身的问题吗?尽管有些人这么说,但真正的原因是人们对奇迹的兴趣下降了)”可知,真正的原因是好奇心的下降。故选C。 【10题详解】 词句猜测题。根据下文“Because loss of wonder can lead to especially poor understandings of underlying mechanisms, we become weak to misinformation. Even worse, abandonment of wonder deprives (剥夺) us of the rewarding joy of discovery. (因为失去好奇心会导致对潜在机制的理解特别差,我们对错误信息变得脆弱。更糟糕的是,放弃惊奇剥夺了我们从发现中获得的快乐)”可知,这种失去惊奇的影响是深远的。故选C。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章最后一句“We can all take simple actions to reawaken that initial spark and live lives lit by wonder. (我们都可以采取简单的行动来重新唤醒最初的火花,让生活被奇迹照亮)”可知,下文最有可能继续讨论采取什么行动唤醒好奇心,过上被好奇心点亮的生活。故选A。 D Recent experiments by psychologists at Temple University threw new light on how we learn and how we remember our real-world experiences. Varying What You Study for Better Memory 【答案】12. D 13. B 14. D 15. C 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。Temple University的心理学家最新实验表明, 变化学习内容和分散学习时间对记忆有益处;同时还发现稳定性对联想记忆有作用, 且间隔学习的效果取决于内容的变化性和学习机会的时间间隔。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“In contrast, if you study the material on different days leading up to the test, you will be more likely to recall it for a longer period of time.(相比之下,如果你在考试前的不同日子学习材料,你就更有可能在更长的时间内记住它)”可知, 如果你在考试前的不同日子学习材料,你将更有可能在更长的时间内回忆起它。这说明“spacing effect”通过分散学习时间来帮助提高记忆。故选D。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“Yet that is rarely the case in real life, when some features of our experiences may stay the same, but others are likely to change. For example, imagine repeat trips to your local coffee shop. While many features may stay the same on each visit, a new barista (咖啡师) may be serving you.(然而,在现实生活中,这种情况很少发生,我们经历的一些特征可能保持不变,但其他特征可能会发生变化。例如,想象一下你经常去当地的咖啡店。虽然很多功能可能在每次访问时都保持不变,但可能会有新的咖啡师为你服务。)”可知,作者提到重复去咖啡店的例子是为了说明现实生活中的变化性。故选B。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“The research suggests that varying what we study and spacing out our learning over time can both be helpful for memory — it just depends on what we’re trying to remember.(研究表明,随着时间的推移,改变我们学习的内容和间隔学习时间对记忆都有帮助——这取决于我们想要记住的是什么)”以及最后一段中“Our work suggests that both variability and spacing may present methods to improve our memory for isolated features and associative information, respectively, raising important applications for future research, education, and our everyday lives.(我们的研究表明,可变性和间隔可能分别为提高我们对孤立特征和联想信息的记忆提供了方法,为未来的研究、教育和我们的日常生活提出了重要的应用。)”可知,间隔学习和变化学习内容都对记忆有帮助,同时稳定性对联想记忆也有益处,这些发现表明通过适当的方法可以提高记忆能力。故选D。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“Recent experiments by psychologists at Temple University threw new light on how we learn and how we remember our real-world experiences. Often when bad things happen, we get stuck thinking about negative outcomes. ___17___ Unfortunately, negative thought cycles just get us caught up in our thoughts. To put an end to these negative thought cycles, you can focus on something else entirely. ●Question the catastrophe (灾难). Catastrophizing is when we expect the worst possible outcome in a situation. When we believe the worst will come true, we set ourselves up for unnecessary stress and poor resilience. ___18___ Every time you find yourself imagining the worst, touch the object and remind yourself that the best possible outcome is just as likely to occur as the worst possible outcome. ●Find the benefits of past challenges and failures. Plenty of smart folks will tell you that you should take action and reflect on your failures right after you experience them. ___19___ An easier way to start may be to look at past challenges—challenges that you’re no longer upset about. For example, if you missed an important deadline, maybe you learned that you need to arrange better, or tone down your perfectionism, ● ___20___ When you’re experiencing a challenge, the ability to think about your experiences as if you were “a fly on the wall”, or as if you were someone else who is witnessing your experiences from afar, keeps you from getting stuck in your negative emotions. Emotional distancing also makes it less likely that you will replay the unpleasant details of the event, and as a result, you may feel better when bad things happen. A. Emotionally distance yourself from challenges. B. But negative emotions can cloud your thinking. C. Many things may make you feel uncomfortable in life. D. Sometimes life’s challenges can even make you stronger. E. One way to break this thought pattern is to carry a small object with you. F. (使用了省略关系代词的定语从句) 第二节(满分25分) 47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。 As the day ended on my 19th birthday, Grandma did her usual shuffle (拖着脚走) over to me, a little box in her hand. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150 左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 The following day, I went to the bank I knew my grandmother had dealt with. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ From that day onwards, I decided to use the savings wisely and made a positive impact on the world. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: The following day, I went to the bank I knew my grandmother had dealt with. With the bank account number in hand, I nervously entered the bank. The teller greeted me with a warm smile and I explained the reason for my visit. After a few minutes of checking, she confirmed that the account indeed belonged to my grandmother. It was filled with money she had saved over the years, presumably for my future. Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized the depth of her love and sacrifice. From that day onwards, I decided to use the savings wisely and made a positive impact on the world. I knew that this was not just a gift, but a responsibility. I wanted to make my grandmother proud and show her that her love and hard work would not be in vain. I started by donating a portion of the money to a local charity that helped children in need. It felt great to be able to give back and make a difference in someone else’s life. I was so grateful to my grandmother, who influenced me and made me a better person. 词汇激活 行为类 ①进入:enter/get into ②解释:explain/elucidate ③确认:confirm/identify 情绪类 ①紧张地:nervously/tensely ②感激的:grateful/thankful 【点睛】【高分句型1】After a few minutes of checking, she confirmed that the account indeed belonged to my grandmother.
