Theo is an artificial intelligence (AI) robot that looks for diseased tulips (郁金香) each spring.
The work prevents sickness from spreading among the valuable plants. The robot looks for troubled tulip bulbs (球茎) and destroys them if necessary. They are removed from the healthy ones in a processing center after the harvest.
There are 45 robots like Theo working in the tulip fields of the Netherlands. Their job becomes important as the winter turns to spring and high season nears. People come from around the world to see the colorful flowers.
Allan Visser’s family has been growing tulips for three generations. This is the second season that he has used a robot. He said it is very costly — the same as a sports car — about $200, 000. In the past, knowledgeable farmers would walk around the fields looking for tulips that showed signs of sickness.
“I prefer to have the robot because a sports car doesn’t take out the sick tulips from our field,” he said. “Yeah, it is expensive, but there are fewer and fewer people who can really see the sick tulips.”
Visser explained how the robot works Red stripes (条纹病) show up on the leaves of sick plants. The robot has been trained to see the sick plants. It has cameras and can take thousands of photos of the tulips as it slowly rolls through the fields. The Al software considers the photos and decides which tulips need to be killed.
He said all of the knowledge they use in the computer program that informs the robot comes from tulip farmers—farmers like Theo van der Voort. He is the farmer that the robot is named after. Van der Voort retired after 52 years of looking for sick flowers in his fields.
4. What can the AI robot do for the farmers?
A. Kill extra plants. B. Build flower farms.
C. Harvest and pack tulips. D. Recognize sick plants.
5. What does Allan Visser think of the AI robot?
A. It moves too slowly. B. It is worth the money.
C. It is not easy to operate. D. It is no match for a human helper.
6. How does the Al robot judge the plant as being sick?
A. By comparing the flowers’ sizes. B. By recording plants’ growing speed.
C. By observing the plants’ leaves. D. By smelling the plants’ flowers.
7. Why is Theo van der Voort mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To honor his contribution to the robot.
B. To explain why the robot needs improving.
C. To stress the difficulty he faces when growing tulips.
D. To show the great benefit he receives by using the robot.

Historic covered bridges in the United States are under threat by the use of the modern technology GPS.
The historic bridges usually have signs, including flashing lights, to warm trucks that are too tall or too heavy not to cross. But some truck drivers do not follow the warnings and crash into the bridge. They say the GPS directed them onto the bridge. Many times, the drivers are using systems made for cars instead of large trucks.
In Lyndon town, Vermont state, the 146-year-old Miller’s Bridge has been hit more than 20 times. GPS is the most general excuse that is given by drivers that do hit the bridge. Drivers can face a fine (罚款) of $5, 000 from the town, plus payments to the state. But the real problem is that drivers simply don’t think about their actions.
The bridge had to be closed twice for repairs. Each time, it took several months to finish the job. In 2019, a truck hit the bridge supports. Engineering and repair costs were nearly $100, 000.
About half the time, the town gets its money back through the drivers’ insurance-if it catches them. Many drivers simply drive away without telling officials about the accident. A nearby safety camera aimed at the bridge has helped officials find some drivers.
Trucks hit a covered bridge in Cobb County, Georgia, so many times that officials put metal bars (护栏) at both ends of it. The bridge also has warning signs and flashing lights. Even with all the warnings, the bars are still struck.
A Google spokesperson said their Google Maps’ app is made for drivers of cars and small trucks. The spokesperson added that drivers of larger vehicles should use different systems.
In Lyndon, there are different opinions in town about what to do. Some people obviously want to see something that protects the bridge so they can keep it in place. Others are like: It’s time to take it off and set it on the side and put a more standard bridge in.
8. What do most drivers say about their accidents?
A. The bridges are too old for vehicles. B. The warning signs are not obvious.
C. They are caused by the GPS. D. The bridges are improperly designed.
9. What do we know about the measures to protect the bridge in Cobb County?
A. They don’t work well. B. They protect drivers’ safety.
C. They are not accepted by drivers. D. They help make up for all the repair costs.
10. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. It is necessary to make drivers aware of traffic rules.
B. It is time to reconsider the location of the bridge.
C. People have mixed reactions to protecting the bridge.
D. People hold different ideas about using the GPS.
11. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Truck Drivers Should Give Up GPS
B. Historic Bridges Cause Problems for Truck Drivers
C. Many Drivers Run from Scenes of Traffic Accidents
D. Historic Bridges Are Under Threat from Modern GPS
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. C 11. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述了历史悠久的桥梁正受到现代GPS导航系统的威胁的现象。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“GPS is the most general excuse that is given by drivers that do hit the bridge.(GPS是司机们撞到桥上的最普遍的借口)”可知,司机们认为事故是由GPS造成的。故选C。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“Trucks hit a covered bridge in Cobb County, Georgia, so many times that officials put metal bars (护栏) at both ends of it. The bridge also has warning signs and flashing lights. Even with all the warnings, the bars are still struck.(卡车在乔治亚州科布县撞上了一座有顶棚的桥,次数太多,官员们在桥的两端安装了金属栏杆。这座桥也有警告标志和闪光灯。尽管有这么多警告,栏杆还是被撞)”可知,科布县保护桥梁的措施的效果不是很好。故选A。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“In Lyndon, there are different opinions in town about what to do. Some people obviously want to see something that protects the bridge so they can keep it in place. Others are like: It’s time to take it off and set it on the side and put a more standard bridge in.(在林登,人们对该做什么有不同的看法。有些人显然想看到一些保护桥梁的东西,这样他们就可以把它固定在原地。另一些人则说:是时候把它取下来,放在一边,装上一个更标准的桥了)”可知,最后一段主要告诉我们人们对保护大桥有不同的反应。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Historic covered bridges in the United States are under threat by the use of the modern technology GPS.(美国历史悠久的廊桥正受到现代GPS技术的威胁)”表明文章主旨,接下来通过实例来说明主旨,谈论的话题是历史悠久的桥梁正受到现代GPS的威胁。因此D选项“历史悠久的桥梁受到现代GPS技术的威胁”能够概括文章主旨。故选D。
D
A group of environmental organizations are seeking an official announcement that American horseshoe crabs (马蹄蟹) are at risk of not existing.
The American horseshoe crab is known as a living fossil (化石) . It is one of the oldest living creatures on Earth. It is believed to date back at least 450 million years. Horseshoe crabs walk on10 legs and use their last pair to move food into their mouths. Scientists do not actually consider horseshoe crabs to be true crabs for the reason that they have a closer relationship with spiders (蜘蛛) than with other sea creatures.
Research suggests that horseshoe crab populations in the U. S. have experienced a sharp drop in the past 30 years. The growth numbers for these creatures in the Delaware Bay region, which once held the largest horseshoe crab population, have also plummeted. This change is a big concern.
The environmental groups have joined hands to get the government’s announcement. They also seek the founding of a “critical habitat” for horseshoe crabs to be protected. They mentioned numerous threats to the animals—all of which are blamed on human activities, which include harvesting the crabs to be used for bait (诱饵) , use in biomedical activities, habitat loss and climate change.
Drug makers harvest horseshoe crabs in large numbers for their blue-colored blood. The blood is used to test and develop drugs and medical devices. In 2022, nearly 1 million of the animals were used for medical purposes.
Current law allows the biomedical industry to get small amounts of horseshoe crab blood before freeing the animals alive to areas where they were collected. However, 10 to 15 percent of harvested animals die during this process. Non-industry research suggests the actual rate is even higher. Those guesses show that 30 percent of horseshoe crabs hunted for blood collection die in the process.
The groups say another main cause of population drops is fishing companies’ overharvesting of horseshoe crabs. Environmental activists say this is likely to continue, even after harvesting limits are established.
12. Why don’t scientists regard horseshoe crabs as true crabs?
A. Because they walk on ten legs. B. Because they are living fossils.
C. Because they are closely related to spiders. D. Because they eat in different ways.
13. What does the underlined word “plummeted” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Increased gradually. B. Remained unchanged.
C. Changeda bit. D. Reduced sharply.
14. What can be learned about the horseshoe crabs according to the text?
A. They are of great medical value.
B. They recover from blood loss in a short time.
C They are harvested mainly for their bait value.
D. They have to fight against other animals for food.
15. What’s the environmental activists’ attitude to the effect of the harvesting limits?
A. Mixed. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Uncaring.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述了一些团体寻求政府对瀕危马蹄蟹进行保护的官方声明及马蹄蟹目前的处境。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Scientists do not actually consider horseshoe crabs to be true crabs for the reason that they have a closer relationship with spiders (蜘蛛) than with other sea creatures.(科学家们实际上并不认为马蹄蟹是真正的螃蟹,因为它们与蜘蛛的关系比与其他海洋生物的关系更密切)”可知,科学家不认为马蹄蟹属于真正的蟹类,是因为其与蜘妹的关系更为亲近。故选C。
【13题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词上文“Research suggests that horseshoe crab populations in the U. S. have experienced a sharp drop in the past 30 years.(研究表明,在过去30年里,美国的马蹄蟹数量急剧下降)”和画线词前的“also”可推知,马蹄蟹的数量也急剧下降。故划线词plummeted的意思是“急剧减少”,与reduced sharply意思相近。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数倒数第三段“Drug makers harvest horseshoe crabs in large numbers for their blue-colored blood. The blood is used to test and develop drugs and medical devices.(制药商大量捕获马蹄蟹,因为它们有蓝色的血液。这些血液被用来测试和开发药物和医疗设备)”可知,马蹄蟹具有药用价值。故选A。

In 2017, Jennifer’s life took a big turn while driving to work. After dropping her kids off at school, she felt light-headed and ran off the road, crashing into a tree. A passing driver called 911 and she was taken to hospital in time. Her injuries and illness were so serious that she was in a coma (昏迷) for five years.
Throughout this challenging time, Jennifer’s mother, Peggy, never lost hope for her daughter’s recovery. Doctors repeatedly told Peggy that Jennifer’s chances of waking up were very thin and that even if she did wake up, she would not be able to function, losing the ability to support herself.
“They discouraged me,” Peggy recalls. “They discouraged me from expecting too much. On the second or third day, the doctors were going to take my daughter off life support, I said, ‘No, not today, we’re not going to do that.’ Every day after that, they discouraged me more, but I kept saying, ‘No, I will never allow this.’”
In spite of all the difficulties, Peggy cared for Jennifer daily, keeping a positive attitude and treating her daughter as if she could hear. She would tell her daughter what the kids were doing, and what they had been doing. Besides, Peggy would keep playing her daughter’s favorite music. She tried her best to wake her daughter up.
“For years, I would hold her hands and say ‘Just hold my hand, Jennifer. Hold my hand.’ But she never did,” Peggy recalled.
Jennifer’s son, Julian, always cared about and loved his mother. He would say goodbye to his mother every time before he went to school. When he got home, he would talk to his mother about what had happened at school. He wanted her to watch his basketball games and attend his graduation ceremony. On August 25, 2022, during a usual talk, Peggy told Jennifer her son won a game.

【答案】One possible version:
To everyone’s surprise, Peggy felt different — Jennifer held Peggy’s hand back. The whole family was overjoyed. It was the result they had been waiting for. The doctors and nurses called it the wonder of love. In the next few weeks, Peggy actively cooperated with the doctors. Slowly but surely, Jennifer started showing more signs of awareness. Gradually she could open her eyes. Then, she recovered more of her body functions, and could recognize her family members and even speak simple words. Within a year, she made a full recovery.
Jennifer finally attended her son’s graduation ceremony. The moment Jennifer arrived at the school, she was warmly welcomed by the headmaster, teachers and students who had heard about her inspiring story. Jennifer was invited to give a speech on the stage, and she thanked all those who loved her, specifically mentioning the huge role that love played in her recovery. The story touched everyone present and taught them a lesson that couldn’t be learnt from the textbooks: As long as there is love, nothing is impossible.

“I prefer to have the robot because a sports car doesn’t take out the sick tulips from our field” he said. “Yeah, it is expensive, but there are fewer and fewer people who can really see the sick tulips.”
Visser explained how the robot works. Red stripes (条纹病) show up on the leaves of sick plants.
4 What can the AI robot do for the farmers?
A. Kill extra plants. B. Build flower farms.
C. Harvest and pack tulips. D. Recognize sick plants.
5. What does Allan Visser think of the AI robot?
A. It moves too slowly. B. It is worth the money.
C. It is not easy to operate. D. It is no match for a human helper.
6 How does the Al robot judge the plant as being sick?
C
