M: I’m going to talk about an activity that I enjoy doing, and that’s fishing. Actually, I think someone said that fishing’s the most popular hobby in the world. So how do I get ready? Well, if you go fishing, first you have to get up early. Then you need to pack all your equipment and that includes, er, like a long, thin stick, a box to put the fish in and some little things that you need to attract the fish. Also, you need to take some warm clothes. And lastly, you need to take something to drink and maybe a sandwich because you can get hungry. There are lots of places where you can go fishing. Some people go to rivers or lakes, but I live near the beach, so I fish in a small boat. I wear a life jacket(救生衣), because I usually boat out to sea alone-about a kilometer-so people can’t always see me. Sometimes it may be dangerous. However, fishing is really quite simple. You just sit and wait. I love it mainly because it’s so peaceful. Also, it’s very exciting when you catch something. All in all, it’s a wonderful activity-it’s like a sport, but you’re just competing with yourself or with the natural world.

For the past century, people of all ages have sung a four-line tune to mark their loved ones’ birthdays. Happy Birthday to You was described by Guinness World Records as the most frequently sung English-language song. But few know the names behind it: Mildred Jane Hill and Patty Smith Hill.
In 1893, the Hill sisters co-wrote and published a tune called Good Morning to All. Their goal was to create songs that expressed words and emotions and ideas fitted to the limited musical ability of a young child. Patty tested out the song, set to the same melody (旋律) as “Happy Birthday” on her kindergarten students. The lyrics went like this: “Good morning to you /Good morning to you /Good morning, dear children /Good morning to all.”
How and when did these lines change into “Happy Birthday”? In Louisville, locals often went to the Little Loomhouse, a cabin that now houses a nonprofit arts organization. “The story goes that the sisters were at a birthday party at the summer cabin, and that’s where the lyrics were changed,” says a director at Louisville’s Frazier History Museum.
Happy Birthday may be the Hill sisters’ main claim to fame, but their impact on American history goes far beyond the beloved song. Patty is the reason people now attend kindergarten. She introduced the progressive philosophy of early childhood teaching, which stresses the importance of children’s creativity and focuses on social and emotional well-being in addition to academic learning. She was convincing the public that kindergarten was not just worthwhile but absolutely necessary.
Mildred was an internationally known pianist. She also acted as a historian of Louisville’s music scene. She collected examples of the unique songs and pushed for the music’s preservation.
24. What does the author tell us in paragraph 1?
A. The creative inspirations for the Hill sisters.
B. The popularity of Happy Birthday to You.
C. The worldwide reputation of the Hill sisters.
D. The main origin of Happy Birthday to You.
25. What can we know about Good Morning to All?
A. It was full of mixed emotions. B. It was written by two students.
C. It was created for young kids. D. It was first used in music tests.
26. What caused the change of the lyrics?
A The advice from some local people. B. The request from a nonprofit group.
C. The birthday party for a local director. D. The sisters’ attendance at a birthday party.
27. What did Mildred and Patty have in common?
A. They both had a talent for children music.
B. They both focused on kids’ education.
C. They were both well-known as historians.
D. They both made a great difference to the United States.
B 25. C 26. D 27. D

根据第一段中“For the past century, people of all ages have sung a four-line tune to mark their loved ones’ birthdays. Happy Birthday to You was described by Guinness World Records as the most frequently sung English-language song.(在过去的一个世纪里,各个年龄段的人都会唱一首四行歌来纪念他们所爱的人的生日。《祝你生日快乐》被吉尼斯世界纪录评为演唱频率最高的英文歌曲)”可知,作者在第一段告诉我们《祝你生日快乐》这首歌非常受欢迎,故选B。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“In 1893, the Hill sisters co-wrote and published a tune called Good Morning to All. Their goal was to create songs that expressed words and emotions and ideas fitted to the limited musical ability of a young child.(1893年,Hill姐妹共同创作并出版了一首名为Good Morning to All的曲子。她们的目标是创作出能够表达文字、情感和思想的歌曲,以适应幼儿有限的音乐能力)”可知,Good Morning to All是为年幼的孩子创作的,故选C。

C
In 2019 tiny green plants spouted (发芽) on the moon. The plants arrived as cotton seeds, carried by Chang’e 4, a Chinese spacecraft that had landed, in a historic first, on the far side of the moon, the side that never turns toward Earth. The seeds came with the comforts of home: Water, air, soil, and a heating system for warmth. However, about a week later, they all died. Lunar night had set in. Without enough sunlight, surface temperatures near the spacecraft suddenly lowered to-52 degrees Celsius. The heating system wasn’t designed to last. The plants froze. Outer space, as you might expect, is not kind to plants, or people, or most living things.
China’s experiment marked the first time biological matter has been grown on the moon. But plants have blossomed (开花) in space for years. They just need a little more care and attention than their peers growing on earth. Plants are planted inside special rooms equipped with artificial lights pretending to be the sun. Seeds are planted in nutrient-rich substance with fertilizers (化肥). Water, unable to flow on its own, is administered carefully and precisely to roots.
Scientists are thinking about more than nutrition in these planting experiments. Research has shown that gardening is soothing and can be beneficial for good mental health. Future deep-space astronauts, who are in a small spaceship for a long time with the same people, will need all the soothing activities they can find. Plants, especially flowers, grown not for consumption but for decoration may help the astronauts feel connected to the comforts of Earth. “There’s a great deal of joy in growing and watering the plants and producing a flower,” Robinson, the ISS(International Space Station)scientist says. “There can also be some real sadness if plants you’ve been cultivating are not successful and are dying.”
28. What led to the plants’ death?
A. Low temperature. B. Unfamiliar surroundings.
C. Too much sunlight. D. Not enough water.
29. How can a plant blossom in space?
A. Let it grow in natural environment. B. Mark its growth every day.
C. Provide it with artificial lights. D. Equip it with a water pump.
30. What does the underlined word “soothing” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Boring. B. Relaxing. C. Disappointing. D. Satisfying.
31. What can we infer from Robinson’s words?
A. Planting is a hardworking task for astronauts. B. Only producing a flower brings astronauts joy.
C. It is a pity that some plants are not cultivated. D. Both delight and sadness exist in planting.
A 29. C 30. B 31. D
根据文章第一段“However, about a week later, they all died. Lunar night had set in. Without enough sunlight, surface temperatures near the spacecraft suddenly lowered to-52 degrees Celsius. The heating system wasn’t designed to last. The plants froze. Outer space, as you might expect, is not kind to plants, or people, or most living things.(然而,大约一个星期后,它们都死了。月夜已经来临。没有足够的阳光,航天器附近的表面温度突然降至零下52摄氏度。供暖系统的设计不能持久。植物都冻僵了。正如你所料,外太空对植物、人类或大多数生物都不友好。)”可知,月球夜晚的低温是导致植物死亡的原因,因为航天器上的加热系统无法长时间维持温度,导致植物被冻死。故选A。
根据文章第二段“Plants are planted inside special rooms equipped with artificial lights pretending to be the sun. Seeds are planted in nutrient-rich substance with fertilizers
根据文章最后一段““There’s a great deal of joy in growing and watering the plants and producing a flower,” Robinson, the ISS (International Space Station) scientist says. “There can also be some real sadness if plants you’ve been cultivating are not successful and are dying.”(国际空间站(ISS)的科学家Robinson说:“种植、浇水和开花是一件非常快乐的事情。如果你种植的植物不成功或正在死亡,也会有一些真正的悲伤。”)”可知,这句话直接表明了在种植和照顾植物的过程中,既有快乐也有悲伤。因此,我们可以推断出种植中既存在喜悦也存在悲伤。故选D。
D
When I interview the students for admission to my institution, Pitzer College, I usually ask them the same question, “What do you look forward to the most in the university?”. I was surprised and delighted recently when a student sat across from and replied, “I look forward to the possibility of failure.” Of course, this is not how most students respond to the question when sitting before the person who can make decision about their academic futures, but this young man took a risk. “You see, my parents have never let me fail,” he said. “When I want to take a chance at something, they remind me it’s not a safe route to take. Taking a more rigorous course or trying an activity І may not succeed in, they tell me, will ruin my chances at college admission.”
Kids all over the world admit they are under heavy pressure to be perfect. So students are usually in shock when I tell them I never expect perfection. How could a dean (院长) of admission at one of America’s most selective institutions not want the best and the brightest ? The reality is(that)perfection doesn’t exist.
I’ve spent enough time in high schools to know teenagers will never be perfect. They do silly things, mess up, fall down, and lack confidence. The lessons of failure can’t be taught in a classroom; they are experienced and reflected upon. During my weekend of interviews, another student told me, “I’m ashamed to admit I failed English, but I decided to take it again and got a B-plus. I’ m now taking English lessons, and even though I don’t love it, I’m glad I pushed through!” I asked him what he learned from the experience. “I learned to let go of shame,” he said. “I realized that I can’t let a grade define my success. I also learned that if you want anything bad enough, you can achieve it.”
I smiled as I wrote his words down on the application-review form. This kid will thrive on my campus. Not only will the college teachers love him, but he has the skills he needs to adjust to the life in a college. Failure is about growth, learning, overcoming and moving on. Let’s allow young people to fail. Not only will they learn something, it might even get them into college.
32. What can we learn from the student mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. Teachers can help students to admit failure.
B. Parents define their children’s success by grades.
C. Young people spend enough time letting go of shame.
D. Teenagers get lessons of failure through experiences.
33. Which of the following statements may the author disagree with?
A. To make error is human and nobody can achieve perfection.
B. Pursuing perfection puts too much pressure on kids.
C. A student should keep pushing for what he wants and try to avoid failure.
D. Failure is viewed as an unavoidable but valuable learning opportunity.
34. Why did the author smile as he wrote the student’s words down?
A. Because the college teachers would love the student for his perfection.
B. Because he succeeded in recommending the student to enter the college.
C. Because the student realized his dream of being a perfect person.
D. Because he thought the student would have a promising future.
35. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Learn to Fail B. Live to Learn
C. Try to Succeed D. Decide to Experience
D 33. C 34. D 35. A
根据文章第三段“The lessons of failure can’t be taught in a classroom; they are experienced and reflected upon. I also learned that if you want anything bad enough, you can achieve it.”(失败的教训不能在教室里教授;他们经历和反思。
根据文章第二段“So students are usually in shock when I tell them I never expect perfection.(因此,当我告诉学生们我从不期望完美时,他们通常会感到震惊。)”、最后一段“Failure is about growth, learning, overcoming and moving on. Let's allow young people to fail. Not only will they learn something, it might even get them into college.(失败是成长、学习、克服和继续前进的过程。
根据文章最后一段“I smiled as I wrote his words down on the application-review form. This kid will thrive on my campus. Not only will the college teachers love him, but he has the skills he needs to adjust to the life in a college.(我微笑着把他的话写在申请审查表上。
根据文章最后一段“Failure is about growth, learning, overcoming and moving on. Let’s allow young people to fail. Not only will they learn something, it might even get them into college.(失败是成长、学习、克服和继续前进的过程。让我们允许年轻人失败。他们不仅会学到一些东西,甚至可能会进入大学。)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讨论了将失败视为学习机会的重要性,而不是去避免它。作者举了学生从失败中学习并获得宝贵经验的例子,并因此成长。选项A“Learn to Fail(学会失败)”准确地概括了文章的主要信息,即失败是学习过程中的一个自然且必要的部分,学生应该学会接受并从中学习。故选A。

Betty was my best friend. My mom didn’t like her, but to me, she was a dog with a personality. At seventeen, I fell in love with the tiny, curly-haired dog. Betty was smart, too. I taught her tricks. She would sit by my feet and when I put a stick or a piece of carrot by her mouth, I’d say “eat” and she would stand and obey. She loved going for walks with my friend and me. She danced around us as if listening to our conversations about school and clothes and movies we’d seen.
Sometimes, I sat with her in the front yard, letting her explore the soft grass. I’d tell her about my friends, the movies I liked and the tests I was about to take. Betty would sit and stare at me as if listening to everything I told her.
Then my uncle, my mother’s younger brother, came to live with us. He and his wife slept in my room and I slept on the couch. My mom didn’t want Betty’s curly fur all over the living room, so she slept in the utility room (杂物间). Instead of being beside my bed as usual, she was out of my aunt and uncle’s way. I hated their presence and kept Betty outside with me as much as possible.
But one afternoon, I went to get her from the back yard and she wasn’t there. The back gate was partly open. Had Betty been searching for me? “Sorry,” my uncle said. “I guess when I went through the gate to check something in my car, I forgot to close it completely.”

I didn’t want his apology, so I cried and searched. I looked everywhere around the neighborhood, knocking on doors and asking everyone if they’d seen her. I called her name where we usually played together. At the same time, my mom, my uncle and aunt, and my friends were coming to help me search Betty. But this time she didn’t appear. Every night I prayed for her safe return. Then two days later, my uncle left without breakfast. An hour later he was home, with Betty sleeping sweetly in his arms.
I hugged Betty and asked uncle how he found her. “I guess she may be picked up by the animal shelter, so I registered Betty’s information there and just now the shelter informed me a kind person found Betty and sent her there.” he said. I felt relieved that she was home safe and sound. My uncle felt very guilty and offered to buy me another dog to keep Betty company outside. I knew he and my aunt were having a hard time and that it wasn’t his fault. So I told uncle there was no need to buy another dog. From this incident, I knew all my family members cared about me.

C. It was created for young kids. D. It was first used in music tests.
26. What caused the change of the lyrics?
A. The advice from some local people.

In 2019, tiny green plants spouted (发芽) on the moon.
C Young people spend enough time letting go of shame.
