When I was around seven years old, my parents, sister, brother and I were coming back from a tennis ball game. That was our usual weekend activity, but a surprise was waiting for us. There, in our yard, we saw two adult geese(鹅)and a small baby goose. The adults were startled by our return and flew away, but their baby was still too young to fly and couldn’t follow. We were no strangers to the ways of wild animals, so we knew we should avoid touching the baby goose or it would stay with us and be lost to its family forever. Hours passed, and night fell. It became very cold. At that point, we knew we had to help and we brought him into our house.
We all pretty much slept with one eye open until morning came. And then another morning. And still another. Each morning, we would try to drive the goose over to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn’t go to them though, and they wouldn’t come close enough to take him back. My sister Joanna decided to call the little guy Peeper, because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping(唧唧叫)noise without stopping.
Almost a year passed. My family filled our days with Peeper’s hugs and my dad would throw Peeper up into the air so he could fly a circle around the house.
One evening, my uncle came, and my dad wanted to show him Peeper’s circle. He threw him up into the air, but this time, Peeper just flew off. Everyone was very, very sad. We looked for him for days, calling his name, but he didn’t come back. Twenty years passed, and Peeper became a wonderful memory for my family.
Geese are very loyal(忠诚的), and never forget their first home. Even so, I was still shocked when an old adult goose came to my home. At first, I guessed it was just another goose. After two weeks of the goose coming back again and again, it became clear to me that this wasn’t another goose. My old best friend returned, 20 years later.
People need connection with the natural world. Through Peeper, I have learned so much about myself and about the nature of love.

When you eat a pineapple, the pineapple eats you? Now, don’t be afraid. This question is not about a pineapple monster that eats people. In fact, the common pineapple sold in supermarkets can “eat” a little bit of you.
When you eat something, your stomach breaks down its large molecules(分子)into smaller ones. In the same way, pineapples can “eat” you by breaking down the molecules.
Pineapples have certain enzymes that can break down proteins(蛋白质). To understand this better, you can imagine a pearl necklace. Many smaller molecules—the pearls—come together to form the long necklace of a protein. You can cut a necklace with a pair of scissors. In the same way, the enzymes in pineapples “cut up” proteins.
Proteins are an important part of the cells(细胞)in your body. If an enzyme can break down a protein, it has the ability to damage cells. When you eat pineapple, the enzymes in it will “eat” the cells of your tongue. This is why your mouth will hurt if you eat too much pineapple. But luckily, the cells in your tongue will be well fast. And after you have eaten the pineapple, the special enzymes will end up getting broken down by your stomach. It won’t “eat” you anymore.
Why does pineapple have these enzymes? Some scientists believe that they are created by the plant to prevent animals from eating its immature(未成熟的)fruits. Once the fruit is mature, its enzymes won’t hurt an animal’s tongue and the fruit will be okay to eat. Another explanation is that the enzymes help the seed to mature. They send messages when to start and stop growing to the cells of the plant.
36. What does your stomach do when you eat something? ________
A. Hurt people’s body. B. Break down the large molecules.
C. Create some new cells. D. Be a monster to eat people.
37. What are the enzymes like according to the text? ________

②A protein can be broken down by enzymes.
③The special enzymes can hurt you all the time.
④The enzymes in pineapples can damage your tongue.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
39. Why does pineapple have these enzymes? ________

C. They stop people from picking them up.
D. They send messages about against animals.
40. What’s the purpose of the text? ________
A. To express the importance of enzymes.

Now, an increasing number of tourists flock to the lake each year to experience the ancient ice-fishing tradition.

A. A pearl. B. A necklace.

②A protein can be broken down by enzymes.
③The special enzymes can hurt you all the time.
④The enzymes in pineapples can damage your tongue.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
39. Why does pineapple have these enzymes? ________
A. They help the seed to mature.
B. They help to spread immature seed.
C. They stop people from picking them up.
D. They send messages about against animals.
40 What’s the purpose of the text? ________
A. To express the importance of enzymes.

April 22 is the 55th birthday of Earth Day! The event was created in 1970 to draw people’s attention to environmental problems. Now we still face many challenges, but we can all make a difference.
Her Trees Save Lives
Adeline was 12 when her family’s home flooded. She wanted to help. She learned that mangrove trees (红树林) played a key role in flood protection. But the trees were being cut down. Adeline and her classmates planted 200 mangrove trees during a school break. They started a group called Friends of Nature to call on more people to protect the environment.
Teens’ Creative Invention
Expanded polystyrene (EPS) (膨胀聚苯乙烯泡沫) is used to make things like takeout-food containers. It takes up much space and is difficult to recycle. Three teenagers in Ohio worked together to study the chemical makeup (化学成分) of EPS and found that it was mostly carbon (炭). They did about 50 hours of experiments to turn it into activated (活性的) carbon, a material that can filter (过滤) water. Finally, they succeeded!
Solar for Her School
When Claire was in Grade 7, she learned about plans to make her middle school modern. Claire asked the school to add solar panels (太阳能板) to the project because she thought clean energy would contribute to a truly modern school.
The school liked the idea but said it was too expensive. So Claire organized a group of kids and adults. They put on a talent show and raised some money. At last, the group paid for the solar panels.
“One person could start something small and then the project could grow and have an influence on the society,” Claire said.
