OUTLINING
Creating an Outline Summary
Previously, we looked at how to annotate a text by making notes in the margins (see Unit 9B Reading Skill). Another way to organize your thoughts as you read is to create an outline summary. This is helpful when dealing with large amounts of information. To create an outline, first pick out the main ideas of the text. Next, write down the subtopic(s)—what the author says about each main idea. Lastly, write the details given about each subtopic (usually two or three).
