Waimea Canyon (峡谷) State Park

The Grammys celebrate the best in music; but behind every songwriter, performer, and producer that makes it to that stage are music teachers and educators who inspired them from a very young age. That’s why the Grammy Awards also hands out a Special Music Award, which recognizes those who have made a significant contribution to music education.
This year, the award went to Annie Ray, the performing arts department chair and orchestra (管弦乐队) director at Annandale High School in Fairfax County, Virginia—a community with many poor people. With the creation of the Crescendo Orchestra, she works to make music accessible to all students, particularly those with disabilities. Additionally, she created a parent orchestra, in which 200 caregivers learn to play the same instrument as their child every year.
Ray took home both a $ 10, 000 prize and a matching prize for her school’s music program. In an interview following the Merit Award ceremony, Ray credited her pupils for this award. “This is the students’ award,” she said. “I’m just lucky enough to have been a part of their journey and their process and to have been taught by them.”
Now, Ray will use the prize money to buy instruments—something the school has struggled to do. She also plans to create an ongoing scholarship for students who want to become musicians and music educators when they graduate.
For Ray, the moment appears to come full circle, since it was a music teacher who first changed her life at age 5. “The reason I am here is because a teacher changed my life and made me want to be a music educator,” she said. “The work is hard, but it is truly rewarding, and there’s nothing else like it.”
24. Who is the Special Music Award intended for?
A. Songwriters. B. Music teachers. C. Music performers. D. Music producers.
25. Why did Ray set up the Crescendo Orchestra?
A. To let parents learn about music.
B To provide students with access to music.
C. To make more money to support the community.
D. To enable disabled students to become musicians.
26. What did Ray want to show in the interview?
A. She helped her students a lot. B. Her students appreciated her teaching.
C. Her students had a great talent for music. D. She won the award thanks to her students.
27. What does Ray think of her job?
A. Creative. B. Easy. C. Worthwhile. D. Boring.

Over the last 40 years, 90% of the King Penguins (企鹅) on a faraway island have been lost. This is especially worrying because it was the largest group of King Penguins in the world.
Penguins living in large groups are called “colonies”. And about half of the world's King Penguins live in the Crozet islands, which lie between Antarctica and the tip of Africa. In 1982, the scientists visited the colony on one of the Crozet islands — the Pig Island. At that time, they figured that there were around 2 million King Penguins there. But now, after carefully studying images taken from space, the scientists believe there are only about 200,000King Penguins left on the island.
The scientists are trying to figure out what might have caused the problem. There are some parts that they understand. For example, it got very warm in 1997. That meant the penguins had to swim much farther to get to the colder water where they could find their food. Many penguins couldn't find enough food to feed their babies. That year was a hard year for the penguins all around Antartica, and many died.
It's possible that there was some kind of sickness just on the Pig Island. It's also possible that the penguins could have problems with the cats or mice which are also on the island. But there are cats and mice on the other islands, and the penguins there seem to be in good condition.
Before this news, people thought the King Penguins were fine. Now, the scientists are worried that they may be in danger. And it will probably get worse because of climate change. The scientists are planning to travel to the Pig Island to count the penguins again and to find out what is going on. But they won't be able to make the trip until this autumn.
28. What can we learn about the Crozet islands from the second paragraph?
A. Two million penguins live there now. B. They are the largest islands in Africa.
C. They are home to the King Penguins. D. People discovered the islands in 1982.
29. How did the warm weather in 1997 affect the penguins?
A. They could feed more babies. B. They swam slowly in the water.
C. They grew up in a faster way. D. They had difficulty in getting food.
30. What are the scientists going to do about the penguins?
A. Study their images taken from space. B. Explore what threatens their life.
C. Make them live in different groups. D. Protect them from cats and mice.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. A Sharp Drop in Penguins' Number B. The Wonderland of the King Penguins
C. A Team's Journey to the South Pole D. The Major Change in Global Climate
D
Tiny, black-capped chickadees (北美山雀) have big memories. They store food in hundreds to thousands of different locations in the wild — and then comeback to these places when other food sources are low.
Scientists have known that chickadees have incredible memory skills That memory can be a matter of life or death for these birds when there are no enough food resources in colder months.
Some researchers thought that neurons called place cells (细胞) would explain these birds’ ability to remember where their food is stored. These cells are known to include information about where things are in space. But recently,Selmaan Chettih and his team found that each time a chickadee hides a seed (种子) in a specific location, a unique brain pattern appears — separate from place cells
To observe this, Chettih and his team created special areas with lots of feeders filled with sunflower seeds. They put small flaps (片状下垂物) where birds could hide seeds.
The scientists tracked the activity in their brains. Each time a bird hid a seed under a flap, researchers saw a brief unique brain pattern appear—what they called the barcode. Different patterns appeared even if the birds hid many seeds in the same location. When the birds revisited these sites and retrieved the hidden seeds, the same barcode-like pattern appeared again, as though all the information about each location and seed were related to a unique brain pattern.
The researchers compared these memories to episodic memories in humans, which are memories of specific events or personal experiences. They’re important to how humans connect time, people, places and sensory information together.
Chettih says that this see chiding behavior has a clear pattern of activity, which may help researchers build a structure for how the brain creates and stores memories
32. Why are memory skills necessary for chickadees?
A. Memory skills can help them survive in colder months.
B. Memory skills show their intelligence and learning abilities.
C. They need memory skills to identify different types of food.
D. They use memory skills to avoid being attacked by other animals.
33. What did Chettih and his team find?
A. Chickadees’ memories were controlled by place cells.
B. Chickadees preferred hiding sunflower seeds.
C. Unique brain patterns appeared when chickadees hid seeds.
D. Chickadees often hid many seeds in the same location.
34. What does the underlined word “retrieved” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Repaired. B. Regained. C. Decorated. D. Designed.
35. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To introduce a study on chickadees’ memory.
B. To present a detailed description of chickadees.
C. To compare chickadees and human memory skills.
D. To provide readers with a way to improve memory skills.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
School mornings were always busy. The first sentence I usually heard was, “It's time to rise!” It was Mom's loudest voice, and there was no way I could pretend not to hear it or avoid it.
By then, I couldn't get to the kitchen fast enough. In fact, it was a race between my sister and me. We usually seated ourselves at the same time, sometimes knocking each other out of our places. After breakfast, we all rushed out to the bus stop as we took our lunch bags that contained a sandwich, fruit, and a dessert.
Then, one day, much to my surprise, there was no dessert in my lunch! What could have happened to it? Did Mom forget to make or buy it? Oh, well, I thought. It's only one time, so it's no big deal. But, for the next few days, my lunch contained no dessert! So one day, after school, as soon as I got home, I asked, “Mom! Why haven't you been putting a dessert in my school lunch?”
Mom answered, “Why, Eugene, I have been including a dessert in your lunch. If you're not getting it, then who is?”
So then we thought of my activities, and what I did with my lunch each day. As soon as I arrived at school, I always put my lunch in the classroom closet (储物间) along with all of the other lunches. And that brought us to Carl—the bad boy of the third-grade class. The teacher didn't like him in class and would send him to the closet, where he would spend most of his time each day.
Carl lived in a foster home (寄养家庭). He was loud and somewhat of a thief. He would take just about anything that wasn't fastened (盖好), so he wasn't welcome at school. Mom and I decided that with nothing else to do Carl was probably going through the lunches and eating what he liked.

【原文】My father woke me up early one morning when I was fourteen and announced, “Get up! You’re going with me to cut grass”. I felt proud and excited because my father thought I was responsible enough to help him in his business. That first day was really hard. From sunrise to sunset, my father, my younger brother and I cut and arranged a very large yard in the city. By the end of the day I was exhausted but I felt good. I had put in a hard day’s labor and had earned six dollars. The next day my father found some weeds I had missed cutting and pulled me aside. “Do that again,” he said firmly.
“Don’t make me tell you again. Do the job right the first time.” In the following days, besides the work in the yard I did many other jobs, like washing dishes and operating a machine in a construction site. From all these jobs I have learned something that has helped me in my next job. I realize if you work hard enough, you can learn from many jobs you do.

B. To provide students with access to music.

Tiny, black-capped chickadees (北美山雀) have big memories. They store food in hundreds to thousands of different locations in the wild — and then comeback to these places when other food sources are low.
Scientists have known that chickadees have incredible memory skills. That memory can be a matter of life or death for these birds when there are no enough food resources in colder months.
A Repaired. B. Regained. C. Decorated. D. Designed.
35. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To introduce a study on chickadees’ memory.
B. To present a detailed description of chickadees.
C. To compare chickadees and human memory skills.

第二节(满分25分)
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Paragraph 1:
My mother and I talked about ways to solve this problem.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Another day, Carl asked me if he could come to my house and meet my mother.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
My mother and I talked about ways to solve this problem. After some thinking, my mother said she was going to put two desserts in my lunch: one for me and the other one for Carl. And then I put my lunch bag in the classroom closet as usual. One day, Carl stopped me and asked why there were always two desserts in my lunch. I told him that one was for him. He was surprised.
Paragraph 2:
Another day, Carl asked me if he could come to my house and meet my mother. I told him that he would be welcome at our house as long as he did not steal anything. He agreed. After that, Carl would come to our house every day after school and we enjoyed our time together playing games. I learned a lifelong lesson from Mom about how to treat others.
