Attached to the balloon were a joke and Laura's e-mail address. “At the time, I thought it was funny,” said ten-year-old Laura. Amazingly, six weeks later, Laura received an e-mail from another ten-year-old girl who lived in the town of Buton, about 200 kilometers away. In the e-mail, the young girl explained how she had found the balloon and she enjoyed the joke. Incredibly, the little girl’s name was also Laura Buxton. A Walking Book During a tour of the US, the British actor Sir Anthony Hopkins lost one of his favorite novels, a copy of The Girl from Petrovka by George Feifer. Inside the book was a dedication (献词) from his mother. He searched everywhere for it, but the book had disappeared. However, three years later, Hopkins was on the London Underground when he noticed a copy of the book on the seat next to him. On opening the first page, he saw his mother's familiar handwriting. Supermarket Surprise 66-year-old John Foundergen of Liverpool had been trying to trace his brother for decades. Many years before, there had been a family argument and the two brothers hadn't seen one another since. However, one day, John met a woman in a supermarket who said, “Hey, you know, you look just like my husband.” You can guess the rest. Delayed Gratitude In 1965 Roger Akua, aged four, was saved from drowning by a woman called Alice Blaise. Nine years later, Roger saw a man drowning on the same beach. Roger dived in and saved the man. Roger later found out that the man was Alice Blaise’s husband. 21. Why did Laura Buxton release a balloon? A. To tell a story. B. To ask for help. C. To have some fun. D. To convey her kindness. 22. What can we learn about the book Hopkins found on the London Underground? A. It is written by a British actor. B. Moving stories. C. Adventurous stories. D. Fairy stories. B I’m approaching the Knight Street Bridge as I try to get home after work. It’s 5:15 pm. Traffic is slowing down and then it comes to a full stop. I’m stuck even before getting on the bridge. This has become my normal work commute(上下班往返) routine. Ahead of me is a heavily jammed on-ramp (匝道). I stare at the endless rows of vehicles, depressed. Seconds pass. Minutes pass. Looking at the rows of cars and trucks, I start counting—299, 300, 301—and I give up. Suddenly I remember I’m one of the 300 helpless drivers. When the cars do move, I move carefully, making sure not to knock into other vehicles. Finally, I make it onto the bridge. The traffic is still crawling at a snail’s pace. Tired and hungry, I become very anxious. Just then, I hear a faint sound in the distance. The sound gradually becomes louder, until I can identify it as an emergency vehicle approaching from behind. What do we do? The bridge is packed. There’s no room for us to move. But I’m wrong. Every single car quickly, yet carefully, moves to the side. Without thinking, I follow suit. The lane remains open for a few seconds during which the ambulance flashes through. Afterward, every car moves back into formation (队形). We close up the emergency lane, continuing our patient wait. Back in my spot, I’m awestruck. My exhaustion and anxiety are gone. I start reflecting upon what 300 fellow drivers and I just did. Despite our exhaustion, we all decided to help the stranger who needed the time more desperately than we did. We drew on our compassion (同情心) and intelligence, requiring no orders. Although I may seem alone stuck on the bridge, I’m connected to all the other drivers. Together we could make the impossible possible. 24. How does the author feel when seeing the on-ramp? A. Calm. B. Shocked. C. Delighted. D. Discouraged. 25. What does the author think when knowing an ambulance is approaching? A. All drivers will be willing to move. B. It will be hard for it to pass through. C. Someone should direct the traffic. D. Whoever is inside needs immediate help. 26. What does the word “awestruck” underlined in paragraph 6 most probably mean? A. Deeply doubtful. B. Extremely confused. C. Feeling confident. D. Filled with amazement. 27. What does the author think made the miracle happen? A. People’s kindness. B. The drivers’ positive attitude. C. Instructions from a stranger. D. The drivers’ good driving skills. C For any astronaut hoping to survive on the surface of the moon, growing crops will be necessary. Now, scientists have taken “one small step” towards growing plants on the lunar surface, after showing it’s possible to grow thale cress, a small flowering plant, in lunar soil. The findings raise hopes that plants could be grown on the moon during future space missions, and even enable mankind to set up a lunar settlement. “For future, longer space missions, we may use the moon as a launching platform,” explained Professor Rob Ferl. “It makes sense that we would want to use the soil that’s already there to grow plants.” Until now, scientists have not grown plants in the soil. “So, what happens when you grow plants in lunar soil? What would plants do in a lunar greenhouse? Could we have lunar farmers?” Professor Ferl questioned. To answer these questions, researchers from Florida set out to plant thale cress seeds in lunar soil, add water, nutrients, and light, and see what happened. The researchers chose to use thale cress because its genetic code has already been fully mapped. For comparison, the researchers also planted seeds in a variety of soils. To their delight, the researchers found that nearly all of the seeds grew. However, they did observe differences between the plants grown in the lunar soil and those grown in the control soils. Some of the plants grown in the lunar soils were smaller, while others grew more slowly or were more different in size. Growing plants in lunar soils may also change the moon itself, according to Dr Stephen Elardo. “The moon is a very, very dry place,” he said. “How will minerals in the lunar soil respond to having a plant grown in them, with the added water and nutrients? Will adding water make the minerals friendlier to plants?” The researchers hope to answer these questions in follow-up studies. 28. What’s the second paragraph mainly about? A. The significance of the findings. B. The plants grown in the lunar soil. C. The missions of future space exploration. D. The hope for setting up a lunar settlement. 29. Why did researchers use thale cress in the experiment? A. Its genes are suitable for lunar soil. B. It has a long evolutionary history. C. It has been tested with lunar soil before. D. People have a good knowledge of its genes. 30.What did researchers find about the plants grown in lunar soi1? A. They absorbed few nutrients. B. They didn’t grow well enough. C. They grew slowly in the dark. D. They needed more water to grow bigger. 31.What is the best title for the text? A. Preparing to Farm on the Moon B. Conducting a Study on Lunar Soil C. Growing Plants in Lunar Soil D. Collecting More Lunar Soil D Artificial intelligence (AI) is showing promise in earthquake prediction, challenging the long-held belief that it is impossible. Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin, have developed an Al algorithm (算法) that correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week in advance during a test in China and provided accurate strength calculations for the predicted earthquakes. The AI was provided with a set of statistical features based on the team's knowledge of earthquake physics, and then instructed to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the AI provided its prediction by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes within the background rumblings (轰隆隆) in the Earth. This work is clearly a milestone in research for AI-driven earthquake prediction. "You don't see earthquakes coming," explains Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior research scientist who leads the Texas Seismological Network Program (TexNet). "It's a matter of milliseconds, and the only thing you can control is how prepared you are. Even with the 70% accuracy(精确度), that's a huge result and could help decrease economic and human losses and has the potential to remarkably improve earthquake preparation worldwide." While it is unknown whether the same approach will work at other locations, the researchers are confident that their AI algorithm could produce more accurate predictions if used in areas with reliable earthquake tracking networks. The next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, since UT’s Bureau TexNet has 300 earthquake stations and over six years worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location for these purposes. Finally, the authors hope to combine the system with physics-based models. This strategy could prove especially important where data is poor or lacking. “That may be a long way to go, but many advances such as this one, taken together, are what moves science forward.” concludes Scott Tinker, the bureau's director. 32. Which words can best describe the earthquake-predicting technology? A. Reliable but outdated. B. Effective but costly. C. Potential and economical. D. Groundbreaking and promising. 33. How does the AI forecast earthquakes? A. By identifying data from the satellites. B. By analyzing background sounds in the Earth. C. By modeling data based on earthquake recordings. D. By monitoring changes in the Earth's magnetic field. 34. What does Alexandros Savvaidis intend to show in paragraph 3? A. The ways to reduce losses in earthquakes. B. The importance of preparing for earthquakes. C. The significance of developing the AI prediction. D. The limitation of AI algorithms in earthquake prediction. 35. What does the following research focus on? A. Conducting tests in different locations. B. Applying the AI approach to other fields. C. Building more earthquake stations in Texas. D. Enlarging the database to train the accuracy. 第二节 七选五(共5个小题;每题2.5分,共12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Summer isn’t summer without the beach. For millions of Americans, hitting the sand is a time to catch waves, enjoy the sunshine, build sand castles, have picnics, spot wildlife and go exploring. 36 . Here are some tips on how to be a better beachgoer, ensuring your favorite strip of sand remains lively. Plastic isn’t fantastic. One of the biggest contributors to beach litter is single-use plastic, such as chip bags, candy wrappers and juice boxes. 37 . Put meals in lunch bags or boxes, and bring drinks in water bottles or thermoses. 38 . It doesn’t matter how much time and effort you spent building a sand castle or digging the giant moat(壕沟) around it. If you are on a beach marked as a sea turtle habitat, fill in the moat and knock down the structure. Otherwise, they can die if they fall into a hole and get trapped. Respect the animals. The beach isn’t a petting zoo. People who love the creatures of the ocean have a desire to gain amazing experiences with them and have a connection to them, but don’t touch them. 39 . Read the signs. Signs posted at the beach aren’t optional reading: they are there to alert you to where you can’t go, what you can’t do, and what you can’t take, so don’t mess with the local ecosystem or its inhabitants. All the actions above may seem like little gestures, but they will serve as an inspiration to fellow beachgoers. 40 . A. Destroy what you build. B. Keep off a turtle habitat. C. Plastic toys break easily, leaving behind chips and pieces. D. Work together, and individuals can really make a big difference. E. Buy food and drinks in bulk and put them in reusable packaging instead. F. However, all that fun places stress on the coastal environment and the animals that inhabit it. G. For example, if you take a starfish out of the water, even for 10 seconds, it could choke and die. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 完型填空(共15题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 People will do all sorts of crazy things for their loved ones, and 72-year-old Raynor is a case in point. I’ve been staying at home, working in the garden. Look at the flowers I’ve just planted! W: Oh, how beautiful! Ah, is Alice home? M: No. She is visiting her relatives in Chicago. W: I didn’t know she has family in Chicago. M: She was born there. W: How long have you lived here in Boston? W: Your friends read comic books and short stories. You are into travel guides? M: Actually, I am going to write it (14) so I can put some of it in the school newspaper. W: Fantastic. I’m so busy. I usually go to the library about once a month. (15)Sometimes I return books late. And it’s so quiet in there. M: The librarians are helpful and kind. They even let me take out eight books at a time. I was going on vacation, so I needed a few extra. I usually read six books a month. (16)You should go more often. The librarians can help you find the kind of books you like. W: Really? I would like to find some books on biology. My sister in university told me about her science classes. Chemistry and physics sound okay, but biology most interests me.(17) Text 10 I’m here at your school on this fine Friday, to explain to you all about the new website you will be using to take your tests every day. After today this class will be held over the Internet,(18) so you will not need to come to this building hall any longer. You will be told about the homework by messages and you will find all the notes on this website. If you look on your screen, you will see three things: Notes, Tests and Discussion. The Notes section will contain all of the class notes. The Tests section is where you will take your daily tests. Each test will be twenty questions and you will need to do them within the thirty minutes given.(19) The Discussion section is where you may ask questions or give answers to questions asked by other students.(20) Not only will your homework be graded on the Tests, but you may earn extra points by giving correct answers in the Discussion page. Are you clear? If you have any questions, please ask me now. 高一英语学科 答案第 1 页 共 5 页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$null
