It can be a big or small act——just as long as you write about an example where you went above and beyond to help out. Write about your experiences of volunteering or making a difference.”(你是如何改变你的社区的? 以及Rules:中“Your entries must be submitted(提交) through our website, so you’d better have an account of our website.”(参赛作品必须通过我们的网站提交,所以你最好有我们网站的账号。) 根据Prizes:中“Winners and honorable mentions will have their entry published in our magazine in February2025.”(获奖者和荣誉奖获得者的作品将于2025年2月在我们的杂志上发表。) B A UK organization is looking to hire five people—a base leader, a shop manager, and three general assistants—to work at the “Penguin Post Office” in Port Lockroy, Antarctica. The jobs are open to UK residents over the age of 18, beginning in early November 2024 and last until March2025, the season of summer in Antarctica. Responsibilities will include sorting the over 80,000 letters and postcards sent by the 18,000tourists who visit the world’s southernmost post office each summer. Employees will also help sell postage stamps, run the small onsite gift shop, and look after the aging building. But their most important duty will be to keep track of Port Lockroy’s group of about 1,500 gentoo penguins. Exciting as it may sound, the UK organization warns applicants that the jobs are not for those who lack courage. Even during summer, temperatures on the icy continent can be as low as -5℃.Additionally, the five people will live in a single bedroom with a tiny gas-powered kitchen. There is no flushing toilet. Instead, they will use a camping toilet, which must be emptied daily. There is limited phone and Internet access and no running water. Visiting ships provide water in cans and also offer the staff showers every few days. But in poor weather conditions, they may have to do without a shower for extended periods. With the closest hospital in Argentina, medical evacuations (遣送) could take up to a week! However, the biggest challenge will be the smell of penguin waste that will surround them all through their work process! Despite these problems, the positions, which open up every summer, receive thousands of applications each year. Camilla Nichol, the organization’s CEO, is not surprised. She believes that for the right individuals, the jobs provide “a unique opportunity to live in a landscape that makes you feel awe (敬畏) and wonder, where pioneering generations have gone before us, making groundbreaking discoveries about our planet.” 4. What can we learn about the “Penguin Post Office” from the text? A. It is only open every summer. B. It is the northernmost post office. C. It deals with 18,000 letters every year. D. It is run by volunteers from all over the world. 5. What is the main task for the employees? A. Repainting the “Penguin Post Office”. B. Designing and printing their own stamps. C. Helping with penguin population research. D. Posting gifts from Antarctica to other places. 6. What’s the biggest problem the staff must face? A. The crowded bedroom. B. The lack of water resources. C. The extremely cold weather. D. The smelly working environment. 7. What does Camilla Nichol think of so many applications for the jobs? A. It is stressful. B. It is rare. C. It is not easy to understand. D. It is not unexpected. A 5. C 6. D 7. 根据第一段“The jobs are open to UK residents over the age of 18, beginning in early November 2024 and last until March2025, the season of summer in Antarctica.(对18岁以上的英国居民开放,从2024年11月初开始,一直持续到2025年3月,也就是南极洲的夏季)”可知,“Penguin Post Office”只在南极夏季开放。故选A项。 根据第二段“Responsibilities will include sorting the over 80,000 letters and postcards sent by the 18,000tourists who visit the world’s southernmost post office each summer. Employees will also help sell postage stamps, run the small onsite gift shop, and look after the aging building. But their most important duty will be to keep track of Port Lockroy’s group of about 1,500 gentoo penguins.(他们的职责包括整理每年夏天1.8万名游客寄来的8万多封信件和明信片。 根据第三段“However, the biggest challenge will be the smell of penguin waste that will surround them all through their work process!(然而,他们将要面临的最大挑战将是企鹅排泄物的气味,这种气味将在他们整个工作过程中一直伴随着他们!)” 根据最后一段“Despite these problems, the positions, which open up every summer, receive thousands of applications each year. Camilla Nichol, the organization’s CEO, is not surprised. She believes that for the right individuals, the jobs provide “a unique opportunity to live in a landscape that makes you feel awe (敬畏) and wonder, where pioneering generations have gone before us, making groundbreaking discoveries about our planet.”(尽管存在这些问题,这些每年夏天开放的职位每年还是会收到数千份申请。 C Like rainbows, a green flash during sunset is another example of an optical phenomenon (光学现象) that occurs regularly in our daily life and seems magical when you see one yourself. Similar to how rainbows appear when sunlight is scattered (散射) through raindrops, green flashes during sunsets — and sometimes sunrises — happen when sunlight passes through a thick layer (层) of Earth’s atmosphere. As the sun’s light moves through Earth’s atmosphere, it gets bent, creating a beautiful and colorful sight that can be seen by human eyes. This bending of light is what sometimes lets us see a green color around the sun. The different temperatures in the atmosphere also bear on it, according to Bay Area meteorologist and photographer Jan Null. Right over the ocean, there is cooler air, but sometimes there is a layer of warm air above it. The difference of density (密度) caused by warm and cool temperatures creates something that Null calls a “coastal inversion” when the wind blows from the land towards the sea, bending the setting sun’s light. But why is the flash green? As the sunlight is bent by the atmosphere, the green light becomes concentrated and separates from the other colors in the light, creating that brilliant green flash. To have a chance of seeing a green flash in the Bay Area, find a viewpoint near the coast, where the view of the sun setting isn’t blocked—and watch the sun as it starts disappearing into the horizon. As for the best time, that will be on a relatively warm, clear day with a light offshore wind that will help create those “coastal inversions”. Null warned that the green flash will last just a few seconds, making it even harder to spot only with eyes. That is why some people claim it doesn’t even exist. For those lucky enough to wait patiently to see this attractive sight, it will all be worth it, he said. 8. Under which condition can green flashes happen? A. When sunlight is bent through thick air. B. When sunlight is reflected on the calm sea. C. When sunlight is scattered through raindrops. D. When the warm and cool temperatures meet. 9. What does the underlined part “bear on” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Play a role in. B. Depend on. C. Differ from. D. Give way to. 10. Why is it most likely to see a green flash near the coast on a fine day? A. There are not too many clouds. B. There is wind blowing from the sea. C. There is a coastal inversion. D. There is so much water to bend the sunlight. 11. What can be known about green flashes from the last paragraph? A. It is true that they do not exist at all. B. It is far from worthwhile to wait to see them. C. It is easy to discover them with proper equipment. D. It is barely possible to see them with human eyes. A 9. A 10. C 11. 根据第一段“Similar to how rainbows appear when sunlight is scattered (散射) through raindrops, green flashes during sunsets — and sometimes sunrises — happen when sunlight passes through a thick layer (层) of Earth’s atmosphere. As the sun’s light moves through Earth’s atmosphere, it gets bent, creating a beautiful and colorful sight that can be seen by human eyes. This bending of light is what sometimes lets us see a green color around the sun.(类似于当阳光通过雨滴散射时彩虹的出现,在日落时——有时是日出——当阳光穿过厚厚的地球大气层时就会出现绿色的闪光。 故选A项。 根据后文“Right over the ocean, there is cooler air, but sometimes there is a layer of warm air above it. The difference of density (密度) caused by warm and cool temperatures creates something that Null calls a “coastal inversion” when the wind blows from the land towards the sea, bending the setting sun’s light.(在海洋的正上方,有较冷的空气,但有时在其上方有一层温暖的空气。 故选A项。 根据倒数第二段“To have a chance of seeing a green flash in the Bay Area, find a viewpoint near the coast, where the view of the sun setting isn’t blocked—and watch the sun as it starts disappearing into the horizon. As for the best time, that will be on a relatively warm, clear day with a light offshore wind that will help create those “coastal inversions”.(要想有机会在湾区看到绿色闪光,找一个靠近海岸的观景点,在那里太阳落山的景色不会被阻挡,然后看着太阳开始消失在地平线上。 根据最后一段“Null warned that the green flash will last just a few seconds, making it even harder to spot only with eyes. That is why some people claim it doesn’t even exist. For those lucky enough to wait patiently to see this attractive sight, it will all be worth it, he said.(Null警告说,绿色的闪光只会持续几秒钟,这使得单凭眼睛更难发现它。 D Universities spent the late 1990s and early 2000s ensuring students could attach documents to email, fill out spreadsheets and perform other basic computer skills. But the information age has led to a major change, with a new focus on digital or media literacy (素养) for incoming students. Florida State University (FSU) joins a small but growing number of universities adding the requirement. Since last year, FSU has required incoming students to complete a digital-literacy course even as it calls off the familiar computer ability requirement. Digital literacy is closer to what has often been referred to as media literacy with a focus on understanding and recognizing correct online news sources, misinformation, opinions and advertising. The ongoing influence of social media, concerns about purposely false news stories and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) have added urgency to the effort. In a 2019 study, almost every high school student was unable to differentiate between right and fake (虚假的) news articles. We don’t expect somehow that the population will improve in that regard in only four years. The structure of a new digital-literacy requirement depends on the university. For FSU, the requirement is dependent upon the major. For example, a digital-literacy requirement for a journalism major would require different courses from a biology major. This is for all the students and all the majors and it’s going to be a challenge. In addition to the new requirements, several universities have digital-literacy courses, and a few created majors for the topic. Arizona State University offers a digital-media literacy undergraduate degree, while Indiana Wesleyan University has a master’s degree in technology and digital literacy in education. Universities do face challenges putting digital-literacy courses into practice, including finding professionals in the fast-changing subject while students often consider themselves to be experts. There is also the potential disadvantage of having another graduation requirement. While literacy courses do improve literacy, such courses are not a perfect fix. A single class on digital literacy doesn’t necessarily make you literate. 12. What is the benefit of media literacy for college students? A. Keeping them far away from social media. B. Making them well informed of achievements in AI. C. Leading them to master more useful basic computer skills. D. Enabling them to tell whether online information is true or not. 13. What is the author’s attitude to media literacy of today’s students? A. Optimistic. B. Unclear. C. Worried. D. Uncaring. 14. What makes it hard for universities to carry out the digital-literacy requirement? A. Students don’t have proper digital devices. B. Its structure depends on the university. C. Universities have some financial problems. D. No professor is willing to teach it. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. Digital or Media Literacy B. Colleges’ New Requirement C. Challenges from Artificial Intelligence D. Graduation Requirements of Universities 【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第二段中“Digital literacy is closer to what has often been referred to as media literacy with a focus on understanding and recognizing correct online news sources, misinformation, opinions and advertising.”(数字素养更接近通常所说的媒体素养,其重点是理解和识别正确的在线新闻来源、错误信息、观点和广告。) 根据第三段中“In a 2019 study, almost every high school student was unable to differentiate between right and fake (虚假的) news articles. We don’t expect somehow that the population will improve in that regard in only four years.”(在2019年的一项研究中,几乎所有高中生都无法区分正确和虚假的新闻文章。 根据第四段“The structure of a new digital-literacy requirement depends on the university. For FSU, the requirement is dependent upon the major. For example, a digital-literacy requirement for a journalism major would require different courses from a biology major. This is for all the students and all the majors and it’s going to be a challenge.”(新的数字素养要求的结构取决于大学。 根据文章大意以及第一段“Universities spent the late 1990s and early 2000s ensuring students could attach documents to email, fill out spreadsheets and perform other basic computer skills. But the information age has led to a major change, with a new focus on digital or media literacy (素养) for incoming students.”(20世纪90年代末和21世纪初,大学一直在确保学生能够将文件附加到电子邮件中,填写电子表格以及执行其他基本的计算机技能。 和第二段中“Florida State University (FSU) joins a small but growing number of universities adding the requirement. Since last year, FSU has required incoming students to complete a digital-literacy course even as it calls off the familiar computer ability requirement.”(佛罗里达州立大学(FSU)加入了增加这一要求的大学行列。 We’ve all set our alarms so we have just enough time to go through our morning routine (惯例) and hurry out the door. ____16____. While the following tips are just from my own personal experience, I hope that some of them will help you find satisfaction when it’s difficult to pull yourself out of bed. ◎Wake up early Jumping straight into a class isn’t my best way to wake up. Setting my alarm for 7 AM has given me time to relax in the morning before moving to the less enjoyable tasks I need to finish. Waking up early has also helped me adjust my nighttime routine. ____17____. ◎Stay off social media In my own experience, starting my morning by looking through posts and short videos makes me more likely to use social media throughout the day. Spend a few hours off social media before you check any updates. ____18____. And you had better only log (登录) on once or twice a day. ◎____19____ The best part about waking up early is the guiltless period of peace you have before the rush of afternoon work or study. While some like to sit outside and listen to music, taking in some vitamin D, others choose to meditate (冥想) or journal. Whatever way you choose to relax, find something enjoyable and try to make it part of your routine. ◎Don’t push yourself beyond your limits Some days you will wake up, make coffee, go for a run and prepare a meal. Other mornings you may struggle to get out of bed. ____20____. When you fail to follow this perfect morning routine, don’t beat yourself up. The key to having a “good” start to your day is accepting your energy levels without judgment and trying your best to finish the day’s tasks. A. Get ready for the day B. Both of them are okay C. Calm your mind with a relaxing activity D. Better yet, try to set a screen time limit E. As a result, I can produce better work F. Exercise really should be involved in your daily routine G. However, to better start a day, only moving quickly isn’t enough 【答案】16. G 17. E 18. D 19. C 20. We did not hold out much hope that the dog we named Tabby would find a home, but we all tried our best to help her anyway. Despite her various challenges, Tabby had a great attitude. She bravely overcame difficulties, recovering from any missteps quickly. The one concern we had for her successfully being placed into a home was that she was easily frightened, particularly when asleep, which even caused her to bite people. Tabby would require a special home in many ways, one that did not include children who might be accidentally injured. The days turned into weeks and then into months and Tabby settled into a comfortable routine. She seemed to like everyone she met, but she regarded a couple of our staff as her own special friends. Her ability to know when one of them arrived at the shelter was really remarkable. When winter began to turn into spring and not a single person had asked about adopting (收养) Tabby, we were sure she would live out her days with us. She was happy and our staff loved her. Her life at the shelter was good, even though we normally hoped for a home for every animal. The promise of spring began to turn into the long days of summer when a mom named Loretta came to the shelter with her three children, including her son, Andrew, a young boy who suffered from seizures (癫痫). It was this boy who had noticed Tabby on the shelter website. What drew him to her was the note on her introduction explaining that she had special needs. As a special needs child, he demanded that they pay Tabby a visit. It was obvious that the family hardly seemed to be fit for Tabby. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ They did call us, but only to tell us they loved Tabby and wanted to adopt her formally. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】It was obvious that the family hardly seemed to be fit for Tabby. Loretta was initially hesitant, knowing that caring for a dog like Tabby would be difficult, especially considering her son's condition. The staff explained Tabby's special needs, emphasizing that she was easily frightened, particularly when asleep. But Andrew was insistent. He was very sympathetic to the poor puppy's suffering. Surprisingly, Tabby, who was usually so timid, seemed to sense Andrew's gentle nature. She nestled calmly by his side, just like a normal dog. They did call us, but only to tell us they loved Tabby and wanted to adopt her formally. So quickly had the bond formed between the boy and the dog that nobody would believe it. Over the next few days, Loretta and her children visited Tabby several times, each visit strengthening the connection. The staff watched in amazement as Tabby responded to Andrew with a sense of calm and trust that she had shown to no one else. After a careful home visit and all the necessary preparations, along with our love, the “elderly, weak, blind, almost hairless” Tabby finally found her forever home. 词汇激活 行为类 ①形成:form/shape ②拜访:visit/pay a visit to ③加强:strengthen/promote ④相信:trust/believe in 情绪类 ①害怕的:frightened/scared ②令人惊讶地:surprisingly/amazingly 【点睛】[高分句型1] Tabby, who was usually so timid, seemed to sense Andrew's gentle nature. B A UK organization is looking to hire five people—a base leader, a shop manager, and three general assistants—to work at the “Penguin Post Office” in Port Lockroy, Antarctica. C Like rainbows, a green flash during sunset is another example of an optical phenomenon (光学现象) that occurs regularly in our daily life and seems magical when you see one yourself. D Universities spent the late 1990s and early 2000s ensuring students could attach documents to email, fill out spreadsheets and perform other basic computer skills. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
