Last Sunday about 100 people went to Longley Nature Reserve to clean the river. The event was organized by the Cleanuprivers Project, which helps to protect the environment.
“Every summer local volunteers collect rubbish which is thrown in the river.” John Sanders from Cleanupriver told me, “This time I was one of them. We picked up hundreds of plastic bottles, food packets (包装盒) and drink cans. But that’s not all that’s in the river. We also found car tyres, a fridge and an old bed!” One volunteer said.
We also removed non-native plants from the river. These plants kill off native species (物种)and reduce biodiversity (生物多样性). At Longley we cut down the Himalayan Balsam. “It’s a beautiful plant, but dangerous because it covers everything.” said the local plant expert, Lynn Douglas.
The clean-up was hard work but fun, and the river looked great! So when is the next event? Check the Cleanuprivers.org web page.

In Europe and North American, the size of an average family is getting smaller, but homes are not. In many countries they are getting bigger. Bigger homes are more expensive and heating them in cold weather is worse for the environment. Many people believe it’s time to think again about the size of our homes. Sixteen-year-old Austin Hay is building a small home with four wheels. It’s got everything important, including a shower room, a kitchen and a bedroom.
“When I was a kid, I wanted to build a tree house,” Austin explains. “But the house is on wheels and that’s a lot cooler.”
During the week, Austin is busy with school work. He only works on his house at the weekend. “At the moment I’m working on the doors. They are quite easy, so my dad isn’t helping me. He only helps with the difficult things.”
There isn’t a fireplace (壁炉) in his little house, so in winter Austin will move back to his parents’ house. And in the future? “University is very expensive in America, but it will be cheaper for me because I can take my little house with me. I can live in it anywhere.”
