When it comes to basic equipment and tools — whether they are for your vehicle, your camping setup or yourself — we appreciate the little things. Items that don’t necessarily have high prices but are smart in their simplicity can make life easier. In fact, you’ll wonder how you ever got along without them! Here are some of our favorites.
Getting caught in the rain
I love the K-Way Backpack Rain Poncho. Made from 100 percent 190T polyester (聚酯纤维) with a PVC coating and a seam-sealed design, it provides comfortable and reliable protection against strong winds and heavy downpours. It’s long and has enough space to hold a backpack, while a hood (兜帽) adds an extra layer of
defense in unexpected weather conditions. It comes in a carry-on bag for convenience on the go.

No shocker here
It can be quite disappointing to try and keep your electrical and extension plugs dry and dust-free while camping. Some people even go travelling, wrapping the connections in plastic bags. There is a simple and far less unsightly (不雅观的) solution, though. The Torpedo Electric Cover from Masterplug is made from lasting plastic and it is perfect to protect your power connections from water, dust or accidental disconnection. It is suitable from cables with a diameter (直径) between 5 and 9 mm.

Hot water anywhere
The Aquablitz Portable Water Heater is convenient and the most economical way to heat water in a container, such as a bucket... anywhere electricity is available (可用的). This makes it great for camping or travelling. It is fitted with a 1.1m cable and a three-pin plug and it has a built-in heat safety sensor. You simply fully submerge (浸没) the unit in water, plug it in and switch it on. When the water has reached the desired temperature, you simply switch it off and remove it from the container.

Back in the summer of 2017, I was busy studying in Beijing when I suddenly got homesick for some Western food.
So, I wandered the streets nearby until I came across a restaurant and finally found it —whole chicken! In my head, I imagined a juicy, tender (嫩的) whole bird with perfectly crispy (酥脆的) browned skin with a side of mashed potatoes (土豆泥): just the way it is always prepared in America, right?
For some reason, I never stopped to think that the Chinese definition of a “whole chicken” might be different from my assumptions. I waved a waiter over and hurriedly pointed to the line on the menu to show my food request. Finally, I would be able to satisfy my eagerness!
Yet, when the bird finally landed on my plate, my wide grin (咧嘴笑) turned to one of shock. Rather than a golden crispy brown, the skin was instead bright yellow. But the most obvious was something that I would rather not have seen at all: the head! In all my years of eating chicken, I had never seen the head still attached to the rest of the body. Yet here it was, staring back at me.
In America, although people understand where meat comes from, the way food is presented means they aren’t reminded of the living animal it once was. When staring face-to-face with the dead bird on my plate, that fact was made much more apparent.
Still, I carried on, trying to ignore the head while I dug into the chicken breast (胸脯肉). But, even here, I found organs (器官) like the heart and lungs that had not been totally removed. Finally, I gave up and just focused on the rice instead.
Afterward, I came to understand chicken is almost always served with the head in Chinese dishes. Although my tolerance for food has expanded since then, I will never forget the first time I ordered a whole chicken and got more than what I had expected.
6. Why did the author go to eat a whole chicken?
A. He missed the food of his home country. B. He wanted to try Chinese-style chicken.
C. He came across a unique restaurant. D. He liked its picture on the menu.
7. What shocked the author most?
A. The chicken’s size. B. The chicken’s dark color.
C. The chicken not being crispy. D. The chicken served with its head.
8. Why did the author give up eating the chicken finally?
A. He disliked its taste. B. He preferred the rice.
C. He found organs inside. D. He missed American food.
9. What does the author think of Chinese food in the end?
A. Acceptable. B. Scary.
C. Tasty. D. Comfortable.

C
Most of us can’t smell our own breath. If someone bravely informs you your breath smells, believe them, and do something about it.
Your breath can be the first sign that something in your body needs attention. Here are some tips to help you identify the cause, and how to fix it.
Of the many causes of bad breath, 90% come from rotten (腐烂的) — smelling bacterial (细菌的) by-products inside our mouth. These by-products form a series of odours (气味) that can make our breath smell like rotten eggs or human waste.
The largest and most significant odour-producing part is our tongue. The back of our tongue is a perfect place for bacteria that feed on dead cells, saliva (唾液) proteins, sinus ooze and fluids from untreated tooth disease. These bacteria can form a furry coat on our tongue that spreads through our breath. The good news is that you can fix this by brushing your tongue when you clean your teeth.
Eating onion and garlic can add a sulphurous (硫的) tone to your breath for up to three days, due mainly to food particles left behind. Smoking also causes bad mouth smells to stay.
Hard-to-reach places in the mouth where the toothbrush just can’t seem to clean can act like greenhouses where unhealthy bacteria develop. Spaces in faulty or broken fillings, holes in teeth, gap s in the gums, as well as improperly cleaned dental implants (移植) all contribute to bad odours. Your dentist can help identify these smell-promoting storing places, and fix or clean them.
We all experience morning breath, with some suffering more than others. Morning breath occurs when our saliva flow slows or stops while we sleep. And without saliva to wash, everything seems to stop and the bacteria multiply to give off gassy odours. Other factors that reduce saliva include stress, anxiety, blood-pressure-reducing medication, drugs, caffeine and alcohol.
This is why it is important to brush your teeth, and use suitable tools such as proper brushes before going to bed.
11. What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. To share an experience. B. To introduce a topic.
C. To state an opinion. D. To raise a question.
12. What does the underlined word “identify” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Confirm. B. Report.
C. Avoid. D. Present.
13. Which part contributes most in producing bad smell?
A. Mouth. B. Teeth.
C. Tongue. D. Nose.
14. What shall we do to avoid bad breath?
A. Keep off onion and garlic. B. Reduce smoking.
C. Skip meals frequently. D. Drink coffee and alcohol.
15. What could be the best title of this passage?
A. Dirty tongues lead to bad smell
B. Improper habits cause bad smell
C. Follow daily routine and avoid bad breath
D. Find the causes of bad breath and the ways to remove it
【答案】11. B 12. A 13. C 14. B 15. D

C. My homesickness in China. D. My first taste of a chicken in China.

How can humans become immortal (永生的)? You might have only seen the idea of uploading the human brain to a digital cloud in science fiction movies. Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, has already done so. ____16____ “If you could upload your brain to the cloud, and talk to a virtual version of yourself, would you be buddies?” Musk replied on July 19,“Already did it.” The reply indicated that Musk’s brain-computer interface (接口) company, Neuralink, had already realized the technology.
What does Neuralink do?
Neuralink was founded by Musk in 2016. The company focuses on brain-computer interface technology which is used to connect the brain to a digital network. It is developing devices for the treatment of patients with neurological disorders (神经障碍). ____17____
How do brain-computer interfaces work?
____18____ For example, if a person imagines picking up a book, the computer would then learn to identify how the brain gives that command. Next, the computer would send the signal to the machine, which would then move a robotic arm to reach for the book.
____19____
Uploading a brain is only part of Musk’s plan. He revealed to Insider that his goal is to download human consciousness (意识) into robots. Just like how our memories are stored in mobile phones through pictures and videos, Musk imagines that our brains — not only how we think, but also our personalities and habits — can be transferred (转入) into robots. In this way, even after our bodies are rotten, our brains are preserved. ____20____ “The most wildly optimistic predictions place mind uploading within a few decades, but I would not be surprised if it took centuries,” wrote Michael S. A. Graziano, a professor at Princeton University, in a Wall Street Journal essay.
A. What will happen next?
B. Why does this technology come into being?
C. In other words, the company aims to create links between mind and machine.
D. The secret was revealed when a question posted on Twitter caught his attention.
E. So many famous scientists are working together to turn this idea into a great reality.
F. Some experts believe that this could be realized one day, but the timeline is unclear.
G. Computers designed to learn the patterns of neural activity are used to get information from human brains.
