I have always enjoyed cold climates and connecting to the environment. I used to work in northern Sweden during the Arctic winter, surrounded by the northern lights. In some ways, that existence is not too dissimilar to mine now — though in the complete opposite end of the world.
In November 2023, I joined the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust (英国南极遗产信托基金会) as their postmaster and museum manager. There are five of us now living together in a hut in Port Lockroy, a harbor on the west side of the Antarctic peninsula (半岛). As well as looking after the museum, we monitor the environment and keep track of our neighbors, the penguins.
We share the island with 1, 000 Gentoo penguins (巴布亚企鹅). Every two days we Count the nests, eggs and chicks in our colonies, and feed that data back to the British Antarctic Survey.
Maintaining the hut and our lives here takes a lot of work: we’ve got no running water, no flushing toilet and no showers, and there’s a lot of snow digging. Everything just takes a bit longer in Antarctica.
As the postmaster, I’m in charge of sorting the mail that gets sent to the southernmost post office in the world. In five weeks, I’ve processed 20, 000 letters. My favorite letter was a note from two children asking questions about penguins.
I have the nicest walk to work. The museum and post office are just a few feet from our foot. Each day, I come across seals on an iceberg and I see the penguins through all weathers — sun, storms, snow and rain. It’s a lot to get used to: the sun never sets, and the penguins are very noisy. There are also curious snowy sheath bills (白鞘嘴鸥) who run on our metal roof and knock at the windows.
On our days off, once every two weeks, we enjoy going on long walks around the island — everything feels so peaceful. We notice all of the small things, like seeing a bit of moss (苔藓) for the first time. When seals come on to the island, we can spend ages just watching them.
Being in the middle of this vast landscape gives you time to reflect and to think about just how small you are. Sometimes I get emotional just looking at the sun reflected in the water or when the penguins put the first pebble into their nests.

C. To describe the beauty of Antarctica. D. To compare them with the penguins.
39. What does the author gain from her experiences in Antarctica?
A. A new view on life. B. An escape from stress.
C. An appreciation for daily routines. D. A special interest in sorting letters.

A. Challenges in the Arctic Winter B. Exploring the Antarctic Peninsula

Spring is the season to harvest West Lake Longjing tea, which is now picked by not only human workers but also “metalworkers”—tea-picking robots!
At the end of March, Hangzhou welcomed its busy season of large-scale harvesting of West Lake Longjing tea. In one teagarden, a smart tea-picking robot developed by Zhejiang Sci-tech University made its first showing after five years of research and development.
With a pull and a suck(吸) , the robotic arm separates the buds(芽) from the branches and then puts them into a temporary storage box. “The robot learned its skills through a recognition model that offers it a large amount of tea bud image data,” said Chen Jianneng, one of the researchers. This allows the robot to automatically identify tea buds with a success rate of over 90 percent, Chen added.
Yet the robot’s efficiency(效率) needs improvement before it can be used on a wider scale. According to Professor Wu Chuanyu, leader of the research team, the robot can currently only perform the work of 1.5 workers. It would need to do the work of 5 workers for it to be possible on a larger scale. Additionally, the robot can now only be used on flat terrain(地形), not on more complex surfaces such as mountains. It may take five to ten years to realize these goals, Wu told China News.
Tea planting and processing are also transformed to become “smarter”. For example, there are special lamps that can attract pests but will not hurt other “friendly” insects. This equipment can operate 24-7, using color panels(面板) and lights to draw pests in day and night and then kill them with an electric grid(电网) .
In terms of tea roasting(炒制), although machine-roasted tea is quite widespread, many tea enthusiasts s argue that this method lacks the real flavor of tea made by hand-roasting. Researchers at Zhejiang University are trying to measure the subtle differences between the two methods to improve machine performance. They’re researching AI technologies to enable them to gain data and make adjustments to roasting methods and temperatures in real time.
41. According to the passage, how does the tea-picking robot identify tea buds?
A. With special lighting. B. With human guidance.
C. By using bud-detecting sensors. D. By using image recognition technology.
42. What is one of the tea-picking robot’s current limitations mentioned by Professor Wu Chuanyu?
A. It can’t store tea buds after picking them.
B. It has low efficiency for large-stale use.
C. It’s designed to work on mountains.
D. It operates with limited image data.
43. The special feature of the lamps used in tea planting is that .
A. they work only on flat terrain.
B. they use solar power for energy.
C. they roast tea leaves while attracting pests.
D. they attract pests without harming other “friendly” insects.
44. What is the goal of the researchers at Zhejiang University regarding tea roasting?
A. To show the advantage of machine roasting.
B. To improve machine-roasting performance.
C. To invent a new roasting method.
D. To give up hand-roasting.
45. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A The development and challenges of a tea-picking robot.
B The improvement of machine-roasted tea flavor.
C. The history of tea farming in Zhejiang.
D. The limitation of tea-picking robots.

Before Christmas last year I found a charity that was looking for workers to show care to the elderly. I wrote to the charity and asked if I could send gifts to some elderly people of their choosing, and some Christmas cards to more elderly shut-ins (不方便出门的人). Thankfully they consented.
I left the cards unsealed (未封口的) so the recipients could read the messages. I became really enthusiastic about the project designing colorful decorations on the cards to make them personal. I signed my name and the charity’s name to avoid any confusion about who I was. I left it to the charity to decide who would best receive a card. This was so much fun!
I loved sending these cards to elderly people who might not receive much attention during the holidays. If I had had more money, I would have given more gifts, but I could only send about 20 little gift bags containing candy, special soap, towels, and other items. Despite this, it was a great pleasure for me. The charity kindly wrapped my gifts with the paper I provided and delivered everything to recipients all over the area. According to them, the gifts were much appreciated. I hope so.
But I know I was the one who benefited most. It was a joy trying to cheer up strangers who I knew would be shut-ins due to illness during the holidays. To me, it was truly a glorious experience! Such a little thing to do, but maybe it made at least one person smile. I truly hope so. That was my intention — to spread love and hope for the best.
Reflecting on the experience, I realize how meaningful it was. The joy of knowing that I might have brightened someone’s day, even if just for a moment, was incredibly fulfilling. It reinforced the idea that small acts of kindness can have a big impact I look forward to continuing this tradition and finding new ways to bring joy to those who need it most.

36. One of the author’s job responsibilities is .

C. To describe the beauty of Antarctica. D. To compare them with the penguins.
39. What does the author gain from her experiences in Antarctica?
A. A new view on life. B. An escape from stress.
C. An appreciation for daily routines. D. A special interest in sorting letters.
40. What can be the best title of this passage?

阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

【答案】Dear Chris,
I’m delighted to hear from you. I’m writing to tell you what subjects I’ll choose in my second year of high school.
I intend to choose history, biology and chemistry. First, as a fan of historical events, I wouldn’t miss any chance to learn more about history. Also, biology is always appealing to me. Because it is not difficult to learn and needs to memorize more things. Although chemistry is known as a most challenging subject, it’s also a subject widely applied to many fields, conducive to better employment and career planning. It is believed that interest is the best teacher. I hope that you could give some precious advice.
Yours,
Li Jin
