In the calm and traditional world of classical music, composer Tan Dun is something of a rock star. Born in 1957 in a village near Changsha, Tan Dun worked as a rice planter in his early years. While music was strongly discouraged within the rice-planting communities, Tan learnt to play traditional Chinese stringed instruments with his friends and eventually joined a local band.
But the transition from hobby to career came about through a tragic (不幸的) tum of events. After several members of a Peking Opera troupe (剧团) drowned in a boat accident, Tan was hired to work as an arranger and violinist. The time at the troupe proved successful and Tan got the attention of Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM) where he was accepted as a student in 1977. Years later, he further studied at New York’s Columbia University.
Under the teaching of famous composers around the word, Tan launched his international career through a series of modern operas. With the knowledge of eastern and western classical music, he composed Marco Polo, an abstract retelling of the 13th-century Venetian explorer’s life through eastern and western instruments.
Tan has composed symphonies and operas that have been performed in some of the world’s most famous theaters. He has also contributed the scores (配乐) to six films, including 2000’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, as well as several experimental multimedia projects. Such achievements have brought him great rewards, including Oscar, Grammy and Bafta awards, as well as the honor of Composer of Year, presented by classical music magazine Musical America.

At the foot of the Tianmu Mountain in Zhejiang, a homestay (民宿) is attracting travelers from far and wide, which has won architectural medal at the 2021 German iF Design Awards.

It has been updated to have a hall, a tea room, a kitchen, a dining room. Japanese cherry trees are planted in the east courtyard. A swimming pool is placed in the west courtyard, with a bar located on one side.
Li and her husband love gardening and music, and their new home gives them enough space to continue their interests and relax in the heart of nature. Li wants to share the quiet country life, so she makes her new home a homestay. In 2019, the homestay became an online hit after guests shared their experiences on social media. “The longer I stay here, the more I feel it was the right choice to come back, and this is more meaningful than making money,” Li says.

Many people are aware of the beauty of a solar eclipse (日食), but are surprised to learn that lunar eclipses are often just as impressive. While a total solar eclipse lasts only for a few minutes and can be seen only in a small area of a few square kilometres, a total lunar eclipse can last for several hours and can be seen over much of the planet. Therefore, the beauty and stability of lunar eclipses make them a favourite of both amateur and professional photographers.
Lunar eclipses generally occur two or three times a year, and are possible only when the Moon is full. When we see the Moon, we are actually seeing sunlight reflect off the surface of the Moon. When the Earth passes between the Moon and the Sun, however, the Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon, and a lunar eclipse occurs.
The type of lunar eclipses—total, partial, or penumbral (半影的)—that occurs depends on both how much of the Moon passes through the Earth’s shadow and through which part of the shadow it passes. A penumbral eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the Earth’s outer shadow. This type of eclipse is brief and frequently goes unobserved by anyone but astronomers. By contrast, total and partial eclipses occur when all or part, respectively, of the Moon passes through the umbra (本影) of the Earth. These eclipses are quite easy to see and are widely observed.
Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to watch. Solar radiation that occurs during an eclipse of the sun can cause a form of burns of one’s eyes known as eclipse blindness. In fact, the only way to safely view a solar eclipse is using specially designed equipment. However, since the Moon’s light is reflected sunlight, it is completely safe to watch a lunar eclipse without any special equipment, although a pair of binoculars (双筒望远镜) can certainly help the viewer appreciate the beauty of this phenomenon.
32. What does the underlined word “stability” mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Strength. B. Position.
C. Steadiness. D. Visibility.
33. When does a partial lunar eclipse occur?
A. When the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth.
B. When all of the Moon passes through the Earth’s umbra.
C. When only part of the Moon passes through the Earth’s outer shadow.
D. When only part of the Moon passes through the Earth’s umbra.
34. Which of the following is right about penumbral lunar eclipses?
A. They are longerlasting than most solar eclipses.
B. They are more common than partial or total lunar eclipses.
C. They are the result of the shadow cast by the Moon onto the Earth.
D. They are more difficult to observe than other types of lunar eclipses.
35. Why is it safe to watch a lunar eclipse, unlike a solar eclipse?
A. Moonlight is much weaker than sunlight.
B. A lunar eclipse is briefer than a solar eclipse.
C. A lunar eclipse lasts much longer than a solar eclipse.
D. Special equipment can be employed to view a lunar eclipse.
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. D 35. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了月食这一天文景象,包括月食的成因、分类、观测等。
【32题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段“a total lunar eclipse can last for several hours and can be seen over much of the planet(月全食可以持续几个小时,在地球的大部分地区都可以看到)”可知,月食能持续几个小时,且能在大部分地区观测到,因而它的美丽和稳定常常受到摄影师的喜爱,因此划线词stability的意思是“稳定性”,和Steadiness意思相近,故选C。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段,尤其是倒数第二句“By contrast, total and partial eclipses occur when all or part, respectively, of the Moon passes through the umbra (本影) of the Earth.(相比之下,月全食和日偏食分别发生在月球的全部或部分穿过地球本影的时候。)”可知,当部分月球进入地球的本影时就会出现月偏食,故选D。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“A penumbral eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the Earth’s outer shadow. This type of eclipse is brief and frequently goes unobserved by anyone but astronomers.(当月球穿过地球的外阴影时,就会发生半影月食。这种类型的日食很短暂,除了天文学家之外,其他人都无法观测到。)”及第三段的最后两句可知,半影月食比月偏食、月全食更难观测,故选D。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Solar radiation that occurs during an eclipse of the sun can cause a form of burns of one’s eyes known as eclipse blindness.(日食期间发生的太阳辐射会导致眼睛灼伤,即日食失明。)”和“However, since the Moon’s light is reflected sunlight, it is completely safe to watch a lunar eclipse without any special equipment, although a pair of binoculars (双筒望远镜) can certainly help the viewer appreciate the beauty of this phenomenon.(然而,由于月球的光是反射阳光的,所以观看月食是完全安全的,不需要任何特殊的设备,尽管一副双筒望远镜当然可以帮助观看者欣赏这种现象的美丽。)”

A boy called Mike Duncan came into my school one morning in oversized hand-me-down clothes and worn-out shoes. He was a black-letter sight, standing at the front of our second-grade class. He shifted (转换) from foot to foot as our teacher, Mrs. Lydia wrote his name in the roll book. We weren’t sure what to make of the newcomer in worn-out clothes.
“Attention! This is Mike Duncan,” Mrs. Lydia said with as much enthusiasm (热情) as possible. Looking around and smiling, Mike hoped somebody would smile back. Although nobody did, he kept on laughing from ear to ear anyway.
Unfortunately, Mike had found a firm footing at the bottom of our school’s social ladder (阶梯) by the end of his first week. In fact he was pleasant to be around and was by far the most energetic boy I knew. After lunch each day, we joined forces to conquer (征服) the playground, moving from monkey bars to swing set to sandbox. As we lined up behind Mrs. Lydia for the march back to class, I made up my mind that Mike would remain friendless no longer.
I said one night as Mother pushed me into bed, “Mum, tomorrow is his birthday; and he’s not going to get anything. Mike’s mother worked all day in the orchards (果园) . His special day would go unnoticed.” “Don’t worry,” Mum said as she kissed me good night.
I wished Mike a happy birthday in the next morning; and his smile showed me that he was glad I had remembered. Maybe it wouldn’t be such a terrible day after all. By mid-afternoon I had almost decided that birthdays weren’t that big a deal. Then, as Mrs. Lydia was writing on the blackboard, I heard a familiar sound coming from the hallway.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】
A voice I knew was singing the birthday song. Moments later, Mother came through the door with a basket of cupcakes. Under her arm was a smartly wrapped present with a red bow on top. Mrs. Lydia’s high-pitched voice joined in while the class stared at me for an explanation. The class felt amazed at first and then excitedly sang along. Mother found Mike, put the cupcakes and gift on his desk and said, “Happy birthday, Mike.” So grateful was Mike that he smiled with tears in his eyes.
Mike generously shared his cake with the class. Offering cupcakes proudly and accepting sincere wishes from everyone, he could not conceal his happiness with a wave of applause and cheer erupting from the class. Never before had I seen such a moving scene in my life! Happy for Mike, I cast a thankful glimpse at Mother, who smiled and winked at me in return. Years having melted by, I remember the day vividly: the soft tones of my mother’s voice, the flash in a boy’s eyes and the taste of the sweetest cupcake.

The owners of the homestay are a couple in their late 30s who decided to return to their hometown three years ago. Li Xiumei used to be in charge of a division at a company in Hangzhou, and her husband was a sales director. It was an ordinary situation where Li’s husband was on business trips a lot and Li still worked on weekends. City life sometimes is not easy.
In 2018, they quit jobs and went back to Dongtianmu village, which lies in a forest of bamboo. The first time they drove into the village was one late afternoon. The cooking smoke was rising from the foot of the mountain, which gave them a very different feeling from the city.
The homestay was built beside her husband’s old countryside house. The old house is preserved (保留), while a brand-new building was built on its side and the whole site is made up of four courtyards.

Lunar eclipses generally occur two or three times a year and are possible only when the Moon is full.
D When only part of the Moon passes through the Earth’s umbra.
