Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy, while her wealthy English parents were travelling in Europe. As a child, she travelled to many places with her family and learned how to speak several languages.
When Nightingale was 17, she told her family that she was going to help sick people. Her parents did not approve, but Nightingale was determined.
She travelled to hospitals all over Europe. She saw that doctors were working too hard. She saw that patients died because they did not get enough care. Nightingale felt that women could be doing more to help doctors take care of sick people.
Nightingale knew that in order for nurses to do more, they needed special training in how to take care of sick people. Nightingale went to a hospital in Germany to study nursing. Then she returned to London and became the head of a group of women called Gentlewomen During Illness. These women cared for sick people in their homes.
In 1854, England was fighting a war with Russia. No reporters wrote about the terrible conditions in the hospitals that cared for the wounded. People demanded that something be done about it. A leader of the government asked Nightingale to take some nurses into the war hospitals. So, in November 1854, Nightingale finally got to work in a hospital. She took along 38 nurses whom she had trained herself.
At first, the doctors on the battlefields did not want Nightingale and her nurses in their hospitals. They did not believe that women could help. But in fact, the nurses did make a difference. They worked around the clock, tending the sick. Thanks to their hard work, many wounded soldiers survived.
After the war, Nightingale and her nurses were treated like heroes. Finally, in 1860, she started the Nightingale School for Nurses. In time, thanks to Florence Nightingale, nursing became an important part of medicine.

We always put into children’s minds that learning to read is extremely important to their future success. But we don’t put that same urgency(迫切性) on adults, even though a large percentage of American adults have a low reading or writing ability.
Learning those skills requires many levels of support. Take, for example, the three hours every day in a Louisville community center.
Ardo Ahmed and Yurilia Manzanares are among the people sitting in classrooms and listening to teachers. These three hours are about learning English. Yurilia came to the United States from Mexico, and Ardo from Somalia. “Everyone is coming here to learn English, to have the same kind of support as their children,” their teacher Meagan Lamb said.
Literacy(读写能力) among adults, specifically among moms, is a concern that reaches far beyond Louisville, far beyond immigrant communities. A Barbara Bush Foundation study found fewer than half of American adults can read beyond a 6th-grade level. A study supported by the National Institutes of Health stated “a mother’s reading skill is the greatest determinant of her children’s future academic(学业的) success.”
“There’s a stigma(耻辱) there,” said Felicia Cumings Smith, the new head of the National Center for Families Learning. “There’s quite a bit of funding that goes into literacy for K-12, but if students are not successful during those schooling years, that all comes to an end.”
These three hours, every day, make a difference. But they’re only possible because the community center where they take place provides childcare while the parents learn English.
The children are learning English, which creates even more stimulus for the parents to learn as well.
“The kids are speaking English in school every day,” Meagan said. “And then they go back home, and little by little Spanish doesn’t feel like their native language.” It’s why, in the last of these three hours, Yurilia and Ardo attend “Parent Time”. It’s where they practice not just the language but how to apply it.
28 What is the example used to mainly explain in Paragraph 3?
A. Adults actively promote their literacy.
B. Immigrants’ English literacy is worrying.
C. Many programs are aimed at adults’ literacy.
D. Teachers improve adults’ literacy in different ways.
29. What is mainly stressed in Paragraph 4?
A. Female illiteracy has affected their work.
B. Adult illiteracy is a widespread problem.
C. Adult illiteracy exists mainly among immigrants.
D. Female illiteracy is more serious than male illiteracy.
30. What enables parents to learn in the community center?
A. The service provided.
B. The flexible class time.
C. The support from their family.
D. The increasing need for lifelong learning.
31. What can the underlined word “stimulus” in Paragraph 7 be best replaced by?
A. Value. B. Knowledge.
C. Evidence. D. Encouragement.
D
If a president, a philosopher, and one of the bestselling authors of all time credited the same secret for their success, would you try to follow it too? Here’s what Friedrich Nietzsche wrote: “It is only ideas gained from walking that have any worth.” Thomas Jefferson: “Walking is the best possible exercise. Habituate yourself to walk very far.” And Charles Dickens made his point: “If I could not walk far and fast, I think I should just explode and die.”
It’s not just these three great figures who thought walking could improve their creativity. A Stanford University study also discovered that participants were 81 percent more creative when walking as opposed to sitting. According to the study, walking outside produces the most novel and highest-quality ideas in participants who walked and then sat down to do creative work. Another famous-person example: As part of his daily writing routine, Kurt Vonnegut would take a midmorning break from his office to walk before eventually returning to work.
Our brains work harder to process in different environments, so walking outside helps develop our ability to collect new ideas, to take in new sights, sounds, smells, and flavors. Shinrin-yoku, or “forest bathing,” is a common form of relaxation and medicine in Japan. It was developed in 1982, and recent studies show that being in the forest and walking among the trees lowers your stress levels. But you don’t have to live near a forest to receive the psychological benefits. Research has shown that immersion in nature, and the corresponding disconnection from multimedia and technology, increased performance on a creative problem-solving task by a full 50 percent in a group of hikers.
So instead of setting a fitness goal, why not set a creativity goal that starts with walking? Turn off your phone and give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversation and natural sounds, to notice the way people move, the way the sun reflects in a puddle. Walk not just for exercise. Walk for wonder.
32. Which saying can be inferred from the three person’s’ words in Paragraph1?
A. Great minds think alike. B. A still tongue makes a wise head.
C. Gentlemen have peace but disagree. D. A wise man appears simple-minded.
33. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. Walking with a dog or a friend helps creative thinking.
B. Walking is a necessary element of Kurt’s creative process.
C. Only a few participants are found to benefit from walking.
D. There is no connection between walking and generating ideas.
34. Where does the author most probably recommend us to walk?
A. On the running machine. B. Down a busy and crowded street.
C. In the science museum. D. Through a tree-filled neighborhood.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Walk for Wonder B. Set a Creativity Goal
C. Start Forest Bathing D. Walk out of the Comfort Zone

THE STONE IN THE ROAD
Once upon a time, there was a king who ruled a small kingdom. He thought, “Nothing good can come to a nation whose people only complain and expect others to solve their problems.” One day, he had an idea that he could do something to test and teach his people.
Early one morning, the king disguised (装扮) himself and went to a local village. He placed a large stone in the middle of the main street and hid some gold coins under the stone. He made it a rule that anyone removing the stone could get the coins. Then he hid behind a huge maple tree and watched.
Soon the villagers began their daily routine and came to the street one after another. The first person down the street was a milkman with his cart. He crashed into the stone, spilling the milk everywhere. “What fool put this stone here?” he shouted. He picked himself up and angrily went away.
After a while, a group of women came along, each balancing a pot of water on her head. One woman tripped over (绊倒) the stone and her water pot went crashing to the ground. She picked herself up and limped away in tears. Neither she nor her friends thought about moving the stone out of the road.
Then came more people. The king watched all morning, only to find that those people complained about the stone, but nobody made an attempt to move it. The king was in despair. “Is there no one in this village who feels any responsibility to keep their neighbors from harm?” Shaking his head, he decided to turn back.

原文】M: Don’t forget to get ready for the Christmas festival! Everyone is invited to attend, and your friends and family are welcome, too. We will need some members to help prepare for our yearly event. Please sign up on the sheet of paper by the door if you can help with anything. The list of things to be done includes: buying food, cooking the dinner, making decorations, and cleaning up after the party. We could use at least five people for each of these activities. Also, please give as much money for the festival as you can, so we can buy all the things we need to make this a great event. If every member here today gives twenty dollars, we should have enough. Remember that the money for the Christmas festival does not come out of our normal membership fees. One more thing, each adult who comes to the party must bring a separate gift for a child. This year, as usual, we will be giving the presents to children who have no parents. If you need ideas, just ask Mark at the back of the room.

A. It was not practical. B. It turned out to be a success.
C. It was rejected by the government. D. It was welcomed by many doctors.

“There’s a stigma(耻辱) there” said Felicia Cumings Smith, the new head of the National Center for Families Learning.
28. What is the example used to mainly explain in Paragraph 3?
【答案】28. A 29. B 30. A 31. D

【28题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Ardo Ahmed and Yurilia Manzanares are among the people sitting in classrooms and listening to teachers.(Ardo Ahmed和Yurilia Manzanares就是那些坐在教室里听老师讲课的人之一。)”和“Everyone is coming here to learn English, to have the same kind of support as their children(每个人都来这里学习英语,得到和孩子一样的支持)”可知,本段以Ardo Ahmed和Yurilia Manzanares为例,讲述了大家来这里听老师讲课,想要得到和自己孩子学习时一样的支持,由此可推测出,成年人积极地想要提升自己的读写能力。故选A。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Literacy(读写能力) among adults, specifically among moms, is a concern that reaches far beyond Louisville, far beyond immigrant communities.(成年人,特别是母亲的读写能力,是一个远远超出路易斯维尔、远远超出移民社区的问题。)”

【答案】32. A 33. B 34. D 35. A

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Just then, the king saw a young girl coming along. She had been working in the field all morning. Tired as she was, she stopped to move the stone out of the way when observing it. She thought, “This stone is a danger to anyone who comes down the street after dark.” With all her might and a great deal of effort, she finally managed to move it to the street side. Imagine her surprise when she saw the gold coins where the stone had been! But, as an honest girl, she didn’t want to take them away as her own.
Just then, the king stepped out from behind the tree. Seeing this, the girl felt shocked and said, “Oh sir, does this gold belong to you? If not, we surely must find the owner, for he will certainly miss it.” The king said, “My dear, it’s mine. I put it in the road and moved the stone over it. Now the gold is yours, because you are the only person who has learnt the lesson I wanted to teach my people.” To his surprise, the girl didn’t keep it for herself but decided to donate it to the village school.
