“Well, dear,” said Mrs Bell. “Look at that snail on the wall. How

“Well done, Tom!” said the teacher. “Now boys, let us give a

Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, about 50 per
cent of people are shy. Almost 80 per cent of people feel shy at some points in
their lives. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have
some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to
20 per cent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more
watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy
parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic.
一
二
三
四
五
六
The family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at
Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 per cent of them
have older brothers and sisters. The scientists said that these children were
often bullied(欺负) by their older brothers and sisters. As a result, they
became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers or sisters may be
shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not
able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.
一
二
三
四
五
六
You may also be shy because of your birthplace. When scientists studied
shyness in different countries, they found differences. In Japan, most
people say they were shy. But in Israel, only one third of people say so.
What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis
have different opinions about failure. In Japan, when people fail, they feel
bad about themselves. They blame(责备) themselves for their failure. In
Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons,
such as family, teachers, friends or bad luck. In Israel, the freedom of
the opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israelis
worry less about failure and are more confident.
一

三
四
五
六
For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class,
and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness.
They suggest trying new things and practising conver-sations. And don’t
forget—if you are shy, you are not the only one.

What subject do you worry about the most at school? Many students
worry about Maths. Some students can’t sleep well the day before a Maths
exam. Others may feel very nervous during the exam itself. But there might
be a way to make the subject less stressful(压力大的).
“For people who are worried about Maths, posture(姿势) makes a
big difference,” Erik Peper from San Francisco State University told Daily
Mail. That’s right—sitting up straight can help you do better in Maths exams.
一

三
四
五
六
Scientists tested 125 college students. They asked them to do a simple
Maths exam while sitting in a slumped-over(趴倒的) posture, or sitting
up straight. After the test, 56 per cent of the students said the exam was
easier to do if they were sitting up straight.
“Slumping over is a defensive(戒备的) posture. It can bring about
bad memories in the body and brain. This can stop you thinking clearly,”
Peper said.
一
二
三
四
五
六
Students who were not nervous about taking the Maths exam did not
necessarily benefit(受益) from better posture. But they did find that doing
Maths while slumping over was more difficult, Science Daily reported.
Good posture isn’t just helpful for taking Maths exams. Sportspeople,
musicians and public speakers can all benefit from better posture. When you
feel stressed out, you can also try to sit up straight or stand tall. It can help
you feel more certain and focus better.

I soon saw two pirates lying on the deck at the back of the ship. One was
dead. The other, Israel Hands, was injured and calling for rum. The cabins
were broken and dirty. I found some food, a bottle of rum and some water. I
drank the water and gave Hands the rum. As he drank it, the colour returned
to his cheeks.
“I am taking over this ship, Mr Hands,” I said. “You will treat
me as your captain Jim.”

He looked at me sourly, but he could do nothing. I then took down the
Jolly Roger flag and threw it into the sea.
“I imagine,” said Hands. “You want to get ashore. Now you need
my help. Give me some food and drinks, and something to tie up my
wound. Then I’ll tell you how to sail the ship.”
“I want to get to the North Inlet.”

Hands agreed to help me, and the Hispaniola was sailing easily along
the coast of Treasure Island. I found a handkerchief to help Hands tie up the
knife wound in his leg. After eating and drinking, he sat up and looked
better.
We soon arrived at the North Inlet. Hands was very good at guiding me
in and I followed his instructions perfectly. We turned into the beach, and
came easily to have a rest.

I was busy bringing the ship in safely and forgot to watch Hands. When I
turned around, Hands was standing behind me, and his knife was ready. I
jumped away and ran along the deck. It amazed me how quickly he could
move with his wounded leg. I quickly climbed up the ropes and prepared both
my guns.
“One more move, Mr Hands,” I said. “And I’ll kill you!”
Suddenly, one of his hands went back, and a knife flew through the
air. I felt a sharp pain. Both guns fired, and fell into the sea together with
Israel Hands.

Then I climbed off the ship and swam ashore. When I arrived at the
fort, everything was quiet. I opened the door and walked in when my foot
touched someone’s leg. Someone was sleeping on the ground. He moved but
did not wake. Then all of a sudden a shrill voice called out in the darkness:
“Pieces of eight! Pieces of eight!”
It was Long John Silver’s parrot, Captain Flint!
“Who is it?” Silver cried.
I turned to escape, but someone closed his arms around me and held
me tight.

I think we have lots of things to do. First, we should learn to be
honest and thankful. We are supposed to be friendly to others and
behave politely in public. Second, we should take interest in our study
and we must work hard. At the same time, we should have good study
methods, such as listening carefully in class, going over what we have
learnt in time. Third, it’s helpful to be in good health. We’d better have
enough healthy food instead of junk food. And we should spend at least
an hour doing sports every day. Last but not least, we can spend our
weekends doing some voluntary work at our community centre or in the
old people’s home. It’s meaningful for us to do something for others.
If we follow these, we will be strong enough to realize our dreams.
